Visitor Information
Beau Wild is a passionate artist with
a career that has taken unexpected twists
and turns. In her latest artistic endeavor,
her abstract paintings tell a story based on
emotion and intuition.
For more information on what to see and do
in Daytona Beach, Ormond and New Smyrna
Beach Area, pick up a copy of SEE Daytona
Beach Insider’s Guide in this hotel or go to
www.SEE-DaytonaBeach.com.
“Abstracted images tell a greater
story than representational ones, and
when I move from figurative work to total
abstraction, I feel myself letting out a full
breath,” said Wild.
Where to Swim and Surf
During the majority of her artistic
career, she created figurative work that
gained her notoriety and reward.
Swim in the ocean or in pools. Many lakes, rivers
and ponds in the area are unsuitable. Ponce
Inlet, Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach have
separate ordinances regarding surfing. Phone
local police departments for appropriate surf
areas and times.

One visit to DeLand and you will know why it’s
one of America’s favorite small towns. Located just 30
minutes from the beach, it is an exciting and diverse
place to visit. From its historic Mainstreet district to
the natural wonders of its many parks and springs, it
offers something for everyone.
DeLand is home to some of the most beautiful
natural springs in the world for swimming and
boating. The 72-degree year round temperatures of
Blue Springs and DeLeon Springs attract hundreds of
manatees in winter, which makes it an ideal spot to
watch these incredible creatures.
Skydivers from around the world find the
weather is perfect for year round skydiving. A cruise
on the St. Johns River, the only river in Florida that
flows north, offers a leisurely way to see Florida`s
natural beauty.
A superb cultural arts center with nine museums
and the newly restored Athens Theater offer continuous shows and exhibitions that can compare to any city.
Often called the Athens of Florida, it has many buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Monthly street fairs and a variety of fine
restaurants and pubs keep the Mainstreet district
bustling. The city hosts hosts a variety of events
including the DeLand Fall Festival of Arts and
monthly DeLand Art Walks where residents come
together for a night of culture, music and fun.
On any day of the year visitors will enjoy a day
spent downtown browsing shops and galleries, dining
at one of the great restaurants, or pausing for a coffee
pick-me-up in one of the specialty coffee shops.

Carefree Bicycle Trails
for All Riders
Sightseeing is at its best on a
bicycle ride with interesting
things to see, like boats moving
slowly on the Halifax River,
pleasant city parks and one of
our best-kept secrets, shady
trails in the maritime forest at
beautiful Tomoka State Park.
In Ormond Beach, a good place
to start is the parking lot on the
southwest side of the Granada
Boulevard Bridge (SR 40). If you
ride south, a shared use trail
passes through neighborhood
parks with swings for children,
gazebos where you can stop to
rest, and piers where anglers
are catching fish. On a mix of
sidewalks and paved segments,
you can ride as far south as
Mason Avenue between Holly
Hill and Daytona Beach.
If you ride north, follow the
sidewalk on the west side of
North Beach Street. You’ll ride
through an Old Florida neighborhood with large trees that
form a tunnel of branches to
keep you cool. At Inglesa
Avenue a new 1-mile paved
path through oak hammocks
leads to the entrance of
Tomoka State Park. You can
explore all of the hard-packed,
shady trails on your bicycle,
stop for refreshments at the
Outpost and even rent a canoe
to paddle the Tomoka River.

new smyrna beach
New Smyrna Beach is a town that has held onto
its old Florida character by repurposing buildings into
eclectic shops that are magnets for visitors. On the beach
side of town, a patchwork of colorfully painted shops
and restaurants on Flagler Avenue give the place its
bohemian atmosphere.
Nature-made adventures include kayaking along
the Indian River and fishing the creeks and backwaters
of the Indian River. If you try paddle boarding, you are
likely to spot river otters, wading birds, bald eagles and
an occasional dolphin.
National Geographic has rated New Smyrna as one
of the World’s Best Surf Towns for its steep, wedging
waves, friendly locals and fun nightlife. After playing
in the surf, it’s just a few steps to the beachfront deck of
a restaurant. Along the 13 miles of powder-white sand
there are beautiful dunes and tidal pools that harbor
tiny sea creatures. To the south are the pristine beaches
at the Canaveral National Seashore.

local dining
a world of dining choices
If you’re here to relax and enjoy the
beach, your vacation plans should include
dining on the foods that you enjoy most. In
our area, many restaurants offer outstanding
menus and selections designed to please
everyone’s taste buds.
Seafood is beyond the ordinary here
and always a delectable choice. Start with an
appetizer of shrimp, clams or oysters plucked
fresh from the Atlantic Ocean and move on
to an entrée of fish topped with the chef’s
house-made sauce.
If you’re ready for a restaurant that’s a
vacation-worthy upgrade, pick one with an
all-weather deck overlooking a marina or a
stretch of sun-kissed beach. Fresh Atlantic
seafood served broiled, blackened, baked or
grilled is always a good choice.
For the ultimate in relaxation you can always dine

st. augustine,
ponte vedra & the beaches
When Ponce de León discovered this shore 500
years ago in 1513, he claimed it for Spain and named
it La Florida for its lush vegetation and a festival of
flowers in Spain called Pascua de la Florida. Although
there is no evidence that he came ashore, he had it
right. A stream of settlers from Spain and many other
countries came to make St. Augustine their home.
We hope you will join us as we have a good time
at a series of events continuing to the grand celebration
of the 500th Anniversary of our city in 2015. The colony
endured hardships, pirate raids and warring nations,
but it survived.
Not far from the Old Gates of the city is the site
of the first settlement, founded by the explorer Pedro
Menéndez de Avilés in 1565. Archeological findings at
the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park have proved
it was next to a Native American village.
Experience history through lively presentations
by re-enactors firing weaponry and cannons at the
Spanish forts. Listen to stories told by costumed
interpreters at well-preserved colonial landmarks and
the Oldest Wooden School House.
St. Augustine is an American city that’s firmly
rooted in European tradition, but it’s also the gateway
to 42 miles of golden sand beaches and nature

For a romantic getaway, St. Augustine wears its
preserves that take your breath away. You don’t have
to go far to pedal, paddle or hike in naturally beautiful
parks along the coast.
Before you leave, take an evening stroll on the
waterfront near the 1927 Bridge of Lions and glance up
at the towers and spires of the Old City. If you enjoyed
mantle of history well, offering fascinating history at
your visit, please come back again to celebrate the
every turn on the oldest streets in the nation.

Along the way expect to be entertained by authentically
dressed characters that make historic facts come to life at
many of the attractions, oldest places and grand nineteenth
century buildings.
When the Hotel Ponce de Leon opened in 1888 it was
just the beginning of Flagler’s resort empire in Florida.
Now the centerpiece of Flagler College, it will celebrate its
125th Anniversary with tours to see 79 Tiffany stained glass
windows, murals and opulent interiors.
Golfers can play courses designed by world champions
such as Sam Sneed and Jack Nicklaus at the World Golf
Hall of Fame. Tours of special collections include anecdotes
of the Hall’s members and interactive fun that appeals to
all ages.
If you enjoy nature-made activities, hike the dune
trail on the pristine beach at Anastasia State Park or round
out your vacation with a day at Marineland interacting

Whatever intrigues you, whether it is history, museums
or merely exploring corners of the Old City, this is an ideal
destination for a cultural traveler. You are only limited by
time and curiosity.
A good place to start is the old Government House, an
official welcome center with a quaint balcony overlooking
the central Plaza de la Constitución. Or hop on the trolley
for an overview of the city.

everyone who comes for the interactive fun. Climb to the
top of St. Augustine’s lighthouse for a panorama of the
Atlantic Ocean and waterways that provide year-round

As the bell towers ring out the evening hours, choose
a horse-drawn carriage for a slow ride through quiet

echoing off the buildings.

Flagler’s Ponce de Leon Hotel
125th Anniversary of His Entrepreneurship
The doors of the Hotel Ponce de Leon opened in January
1888, the first and most elaborate hotel in Henry
Flagler’s resort empire. The 125th Anniversary celebrates
his entrepreneurship and the architectural highlights of
the hotel, which since 1967 has been the centerpiece of
Flagler College.
Flagler hired New York architects John Carrere and
Thomas Hastings early in their careers before their firm
won the commission for the New York Public Library. He
chose the Spanish Revival style to compliment the city’s
history and used the most skilled craftsmen to lay the
tile floors and carve elaborate staircases.
The celebrated painter George Maynard portrayed
Ponce de Leon and Native Americans greeting the
Spanish in murals that were later duplicated in the
Library of Congress.
Louis Comfort Tiffany created 79 stained glass windows
for the hotel. Today students can gaze up at windows
that cast a golden light over the Dining Hall where
guests once dined in Gilded Age splendor.

The unpredictability of what treasure you might
find as you peer through windowpanes and open
doors is what makes it rather wonderful. In the
historic district you have access to the latest trends in
apparel, jewelry and chic accessories while admiring
our nation’s oldest settlement.
This is a remarkable place to shop for old maps,
French and English antiques, nautical artifacts,
books, and vintage linens and lace. Shops also offer
everything from collectibles to casual clothing, and
when you need a break, stop at a friendly café for a
sweet treat or a coffee.
On many streets you’ll find galleries of art, handcrafted glass and ceramics. A sublime painting of
a Florida landscape could be that special purchase
to remind you of your visit, and many of our
shopkeepers will ship it home for you.

Wine & Food Pairing
P
art of the fun in wine tasting is deciding
what you find is delicious. Everyone has a
different set of taste buds, so drink the
wines you like with the food you like.
I
nstead of red with meat, white with fish,
think about balancing flavors. For example,
pair delicately flavored foods with lightbodied wines. A lightly flavored fish calls
for a crisp, light white wine. Deeper
flavored salmon calls for a flavorful, buttery
white wine. Bold, spicy foods require a
full-bodied wine that’s slightly sweet and
full of flavor. Seasoned dishes like pasta
and savory meats are balanced with a rich,
robust red wine.

Resort Casual
ALWAYS IN STYLE
Floridians are known for their own special style. They took the
necessity of having to dress for hot, humid weather and ran with
it. Florida’s “resort casual” has become the fashion of choice.
Resort casual style is all about ease! It’s characterized by
sundresses, tunics, capris, khakis and chinos, tropical prints,
bright colors, sheer fabrics, caftans, boat shoes and flip flops. Speaking of flip flops, did you ever wonder how they became all
the rage? Flip flops have been around for six thousand years and
were first depicted on Egyptian murals around 4000 BC. They
began appearing in America in the 1950s when soldiers brought
back Japanese zori (similar to flip flops) as souvenirs. Since then
the designs have changed. Flip flops have become a pervasive
part of Florida beach style, and you’ll even find them on some
high fashion runways! --Dana Whitcomb

St. Augustine for nearly 450 years is as easy
as walking together around the beautifully
illuminated Spanish fort in the moonlight.
Then follow the old walkway along the
seawall, a path that follows in the footprints
of many couples who found love and
romance in St. Augustine.

Magic memories of the beach remain locked inside your mind long after
the sound of the ocean’s siren songs have ended. Hold onto those
memories through the magic of professional photography––and keep them
nearby and visible for a lifetime. Call a photographer who understands
the beach life and cares about your dreams.
