GURUPARAMPARA
Blessed with being born in a home where music was breath, Shrinivas Joshi took to music naturally. Son of
Hindustani classical music maestro Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Shrinivas drew inspiration from his parents. After
completing B.Tech from IIT, Delhi, his decision to make music a career was a conscious one. Shrinivas started
serious pursuit of music in a traditional Gurukul System under his father and mother late Smt. Vatsalabai Joshi.
Along with extensive training and proper talim in Kirana Gharana, he also started accompanying his father in
concerts.
After almost a decade of dedication, his guru gave him his consent to perform on stage. Shrinivas' first public
concert in 2001 was a great success. And there was no looking back since then !
Shrinivas is the backbone of 'Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal' which organizes the prestigious Sawai Gandharva
Mahotsav. His constructive leadership carries forward the heritage and ensures the success of the Mahotsav,
every year.

APPROACH
Though Shrinivas has upheld the traditional principles of the Kirana style, the exposure to an array of musicians
has developed an aestoric approach which is evident in his music. He is a highly original vocalist with the most
authentic voice. His portrayal of emotions is rich with his own content, not version music. His flawless rendering
of the ragas is a result of his passion for perfection and quest for excellence. In addition to his mastery over pure
classical Khyaal music, he also renders semi-classical Thumri, devotional compositions and other forms.
Shrinivas' devotion, sensitivity and integrity are clearly reflected in his music, translating it into a complete and
enriching experience.

A lot of singers have tried to imitate Pt. Bhimsen Joshi's rich vocals, pronunciation and hand gestures. It is a point
of joy and satisfaction that Panditji's son Shrinivas did not fall prey to this temptation. - Lokmat

THE KIRANA GHARANA
Gharana in classical music refers to a lineage of masters and disciples that have evolved a common style with
unique flavours and nuances. In a rich tradition of Gharanas in Indian Classical Music, Kirana Gharana stands out
as an embodiment of beauty and serenity. The gharana traces its origin in the 16th century to the then famous
singers Nayak Dhondu and Nayak Bhannu. In this style of singing the perfect swar or note is used to create an
emotional mood. Note by note elaboration of the Raga theme is an exclusive characteristic of Kirana Gharana.
Shrinivas has been trained in Kirana style in which the Bhava or essence of the song is expressed with utmost
understanding and intense emotion. Various influences have shaped his music, the first and foremost being his
father. Shrinivas is the last disciple of the Kirana Gharana doyen Bhimsen Joshi, the disciple of the legendary
Sawai Gandharva, who himself received the gifted guidance of Ustaad Abdul Karim Khan, one of the founders of
the Kirana Gharana. This invaluable Guruparampara has had a deep impact on Shrinivas's music.

THE KIRANA LEGACY
Melodious, soothing and touching Kirana Gayaki gives great importance to Aalapchari and is known for its
sweetness aand heartwrenching emotion. It is the ultimate expression of devotion and compassion. The legend
has it that Nayak Dhondu and Nayak Bhannu requested Krishna to give them' that swar in his flute'! It is said that
the cows would come to listen to their singing. Thus this style of singing is known as Goharanbani. The stalwarts
who have enriched this Gharana are Hirabai Badodekar, Roshanara Begum, Sureshbabu Mane, Saraswatibai
Rane, Sawai Gandharva, Manik Verma, Gangubai Hangal, Phiroz Dastur, Niyaz Ahmed Khan, Faiyaz Ahmed Khan

The audience was enthralled by the voice of the century, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. Panditji was accompanied by his son
Shrinivas Joshi with tantamount ability. Shanmukhananda Sabhagruha was basked in that divine sound of
music.- Lokmat, Pune
Panditji's son Shrinivas was singing with him. Their voice textures were different. But the beauty of Shrinivas's
singing was coming across, especially while adding a note to a pause left by Panditji and returning it to him
gracefully. - Loksatta Mumbai Vruttant

While most agree that they will miss Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, the bottomline remains- the show must go on.
Apparently, his son Shrinivas Joshi's maiden performance at the Sawai Gandharva was appreciated by many
and he is now being seen as the next Pt. Joshi in the making. - The Times of India, Pune

Todays classical music concert began with the seven swars of Raag Yaman. The Raag was rendered by Shrinivas
Joshi. When this son of Pt. Bhimsen and Vatsala Joshi came on 'shadja', his thorough training and profound riyaaz
was evident. His semi-classical Thumri 'Chaav Dikhala ja Baanke Sawaariya' proved that he has mastery over not
only the classical but also the semi-classical music.- City Bhaskar, Bhopal
