Jim Marvell GROWING IN CHRIST THE A N DERS ON TE S TA M EN T MAY 2014 PASTOR KEVIN BAUSMAN Dear Members of First Presbyterian: Thank you for the very warm welcome you have given Mary Jane and me and to our family and friends who have visited in the past few weeks! We appreciate it very much and look forward to all that God wants to do in and through First Presbyterian. As a congregation you have gone through many changes over the past year, and now you are going through one more change of having a new pastor. To help you get to know me a bit better especially in terms of what I will be doing, I thought it would be helpful for you to know what I see as the priorities here at FPC. One of the things I tell any new staff to any church I served is that it takes at least one full year to get to know a church and its uniqueness. Each month, season and church season has its own special events, celebrations, and traditions to learn, do, or experience. So I am I seeking to learn what some of these unique things are at FPC. At my first meeting with personnel and the session, I shared with them what I see my priorities need to be here. Based on my interview with the search committee and what I have observed, THE ANDERSON TESTAMENT Page 2 KEVIN (CONTINUED) experienced, and heard in the few weeks I have been here, these are the top four priorities I see for my time at FPC: 1.) Sermon preparation and worship preparation which involves prayer, research, reading, reflection, writing, and practicing to maintain the quality and depth of the sermons and worship experience. 2.) Administration which involves handling the many responsibilities in overseeing a church plus the meetings and preparation for those meetings that it entails. 3.) Pastoral care, especially for those in the hospital, shut ins, funerals, etc. 4.) Setting up the dynamics for growth so FPC members can reach out to teens, young adults, Anderson University students, and former FPC members encouraging them to return to FPC. I realize when a new pastor arrives, there may be certain expectations of what he/she should do based on what his/ her predecessor did. But there are always differences between pastor’s gifts, skills, and experiences as well as where the church is in its own life at the present. Right now it is imperative that we all do what we can to help FPC grow both spiritually and numerically. FPC has also had changes in staff in the past year. Since there is no associate pastor to help with ministry and in conjunction with the priorities mentioned above, please realize there will be things that my predecessors did that I won’t be able to do. I am greatly looking forward to seeing what God will be doing in and through all of us at FPC as together we seek to become all that He wants us to be in His Son, Jesus Christ! In the words of one missionary, “The future is as bright as the promises of God”. The future is, indeed, bright! God be with you all! Pastor Kevin Bausman [email protected]. THE ANDERSON TESTAMENT Page 4 A LETTER FROM TANZANIA– LORI KNAPP Dear Church Family, We have been so thankful to have some visitors this year. We had a member of our USA board of directors come to spend a month, and now as I write my dad Jason Knapp is with us for a month as well. We expect to have a family from the Frankfort Evangelical Presbyterian Church come to visit this summer and we will also host two college students who want to learn more about Africa and our work. It is such a joy to get to share our ministry with others. We are thankful that these relationships allow us to teach others about why our work is so important. Our visitors are always amazed to learn about the conditions that children face when living in the streets and they are so excited to see how the kids are thriving in our home. The boys are doing very well and we constantly have requests to take in more children. I am sad to say that I don’t imagine our work will ever be unnecessary – there will always be orphans in need of care. One thing that always stands out when Americans visit is the fact that there are so many government systems in place in the USA to help orphans and vulnerable children. I know that the USA systems have many flaws but at least there is some help available. In Tanzania the children will die in the streets without homes like ours to take them in and give them a chance at life. The best part of our work is teaching them about Jesus and giving them unconditional love. So many times over the past few years I have wondered if I am crazy to be doing this work. I never imagined building an organization from the ground up. I never dreamed that so many people would come beside us to affirm our calling. I can’t imagine doing this work without the love from you all as you offer your support and prayers. I know that our work is important and God continues to open new doors for us. We continue to walk in faith that He will provide for us and give us wisdom. This month we went to the US Embassy to get Joseph’s USA passport and for Paul’s visa interview. Praise GOD his visa was approved. We are planning to come for a visit this Fall – likely October through December. It will be wonderful to see you all this year! I can’t wait for you all to meet our family and to spend time together in fellowship. Blessings in Christ, Lorien Knapp GROWING IN CHRIST ORDINATION & INSTALLATION 2014 Ordination & Installation is scheduled for Sunday, May 4, 2014. Things are good here in Tanzania, and God is still ruling His people's hearts. Naomi and my two girls have begun to settle down and are adjusting to living with my parents. My father's condition hasn't changed much and he speaks of pains at times, especially during cloudy or rainy days. Oh well, what can be done for him, is what cannot be done for him at this time. My mother is as energetic as ever doing God's work here in our home in Sengerema. We have a group of about 30 people each evening for prayer and Bible study, so Monday through Friday nights are very busy in this house, doing God's work, as God's house is anywhere His people reside. Our powerful God visits His people when they least expect His visitation, and His presence is more powerful and liberating than any force in this world. The school in Katoro is going strong. We closed for Easter on April 4th and reopened on the 22nd. I received an invitation to teach a seminar to pastors after Easter, and am excited to be ministering to God's people in this great country with all its challenges. The seminary we are running is also doing well. We have people who I never expected to be a part of the seminary who are students, and this is a plus and a praise to God. Also, the ten men who came to classes in March will be coming back in this month of May. The class in Dar es Salaam was carried out, although I could not attend since family matters held me back. There were not as many students in the Dar es Salaam class as I had been told beforehand, but, it was a good and well founded beginning. The rains have been coming nicely in Sengerema, and the rice harvests have begun. We hope to have a bumper crop this year, and that will help us greatly with food and all. There is so much to write, but that is all for today. Be at peace with God and His people. Greetings to the new pastor and the whole church. In Him, Bela Kalumbete THE ANDERSON TESTAMENT Page 12 MEMORIAL DAY FLAGS 2014 The youth will make flags available for you to purchase for Memorial Day either in honor or memory of your loved ones. Flags can be purchased for $7 and the money will support the Youth. Deadline for your order is May 18th. The May 25 bulletin will contain an insert with a list of the purchased flags. We will display the flags along the front of the church on 9th Street on May 25. After the 10:20 service, please pick up your flag and take it home. Any flags not picked up will be held in the church office for a later pick up. Thank you for your support of our Youth! WEDDING OF KATE KIMMER & JARRED WILSON! 2014 On Wednesday, March 26th, Kate Kimmer, our late Pastor Rick and Judy Kimmer’s middle daughter, got married! She writes—”For those of you who are unaware, Jarred and I have been a couple for nearly 14 years and when I received the Rotary Peace Fellowship, we knew we were going to get married so Jarred could get a Visa to come live in Japan with me. We planned a successful wedding in 4 days! Thanks to all of the love and support from all our friends and family over the years. It is truly a blessing to be an official part of the Wilson family!” We wish Kate and Jarred many years of happiness! GROWING IN CHRIST Page 13 PASTORAL CARE 2014 MAY May you feel God’s abundant love. May you know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. May you look for His answers in scripture.
