Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had
finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us
to pray just as John taught his disciples."
He said to them, "When you pray, say: Father, hallowed
be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our
daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the
final test."
And he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend to
whom he goes at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me
three loaves of bread, for a friend of mine has arrived at
my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,'
and he says in reply from within, 'Do not bother me; the
door has already been locked and my children and I are
already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.'
What father among you would hand his son a snake when
he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks
for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to
give good gifts to your children, how much more will the
Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask
him?" (Luke 11:1-13)
Jesus teaches us to approach God with gentle
persistence by calling God Father, praising God, seeking
to live God's reign, asking Him to forgive us as we have
forgiven other, and to be freed from the final test.
Ever the good parent, God gives us good things, even
when they are not exactly
what we asked to receive.
Jesus revealed God's

through regular prayer?
What greater way to pray is

witness to the death and resurrection of our Lord.
Imagine crossing the SEA OF GALILEE as Jesus calmed
the storm, walking through the MOUNT OF OLIVES as
Jesus prayed with His disciples or renewing your
wedding vows at the sight of the first miracle in CANA.
Come join me to pray, to do pilgrimage, and to give
thanks for our tremendous gift of faith in the HOLY LAND.
Our next 24-hour adoration is August 1-2.
As Jesus said to his apostles who slept while he prayed in
the Garden prior to his arrest and crucifixion, “Could you
not spend one hour with me?”
Parking lot work this week
Beginning this Tuesday, July 26, we will be making
repairs in the parish parking lot.
Our parish parking lot is being slurry sealed and
restriped, and the handicap ramps are being redone to
be ADA compliant. The work is expected to take three
full days.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, while the handicap spaces
are being rebuilt, there should be minimal impact on
parking.
On Thursday and possibly Friday, the parish parking lots
will be closed. This includes the parking spaces along
the Youth Faith Formation building and the Parish
Center. If you are here on Thursday, please park in the
High School lot nearest Antonio Parkway. You will need
to walk around the areas being slurry coated; you will
need to enter the parish facilities through the portals at
the front of the Church only. Foot traffic through the
parish parking areas will be very limited until the seal
coat is dry, and we do not want you to get the slurry coat
on your shoes or on the walkways and carpets of the
parish facilities.
We regret the inconvenience as we keep our parish
facilities in good repair and improve handicap access .
San Francisco Solano Parish is seeking
a new Coordinator of Liturgy
Our present Coordinator of Liturgy, Dana Hardenburgh,
is moving to a new job and we are seeking someone for
this part-time job serving the entire parish community at
prayer.
Training and scheduling of our many liturgical ministers
and preparations for our Sunday liturgies are part of this
work as well as for seasonal and special events.

Eucharistic Adoration
The Catholic Church believes that our celebration of the Eucharist, the Mass, is the “source and
the summit” of our faith. It is at the heart of our life of faith. As Catholics, we proclaim our belief
that the bread and wine consecrated during Mass become Christ Himself—His Body, Blood,
Soul and Divinity—Holy Communion. We do not believe it is just a symbol. Once consecrated, it
is not merely a “cracker,” a “piece of bread” or “a cup of wine.” With eyes of faith we see the
Body and Blood of Christ. We meet Jesus present sacramentally. The Mass is the focal point
that brings us together as a worshiping community and we are nourished with the Word of the
Scriptures and with Holy Communion. After being consecrated and distributed at Mass as Holy
Communion, the Sacred Hosts are placed in the tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
There, a candle signals the constant presence of Christ. This holy place is open whenever the church is open
and Jesus waits for visitors. Come visit Him often!
But our spiritual life is not limited solely to participation in the Mass. Pope Saint John Paul II called worship of
the Most Holy Eucharist outside of Mass “an important daily practice that becomes an inexhaustible source of
holiness” and a practice “of inestimable value for the life of the Church.”
On the first Monday of every month at our parish we have Eucharistic Adoration with Exposition. As the
morning Mass ends, the Blessed Sacrament is placed in a beautiful stand known as a monstrance and Jesus
Christ is exposed in the Blessed Sacrament for all to see. We have committed worshippers who follow an
hourly schedule for visiting Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament to ensure that the Eucharist is never without
veneration. Exposition concludes 24 hours later, just prior to morning Mass on Tuesday. Everyone is welcome
to come spend time in the presence of Christ for as short or as long a time as you like. Come adore Jesus in
the Blessed Sacrament even if you are not a scheduled adorer. Any time you can spend with Him is transforming.
How do we respond to such a mystery? We respond with praise, adoration and joy. Our Lord gave us Himself
in such a beautiful way at the Last Supper so that we would never be left alone.
Once you have decided to visit with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, what do you do? What do you say?
As you enter the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, you will see the Eucharist displayed in the monstrance. It is
customary to genuflect and bow your head before taking your place. Kneel or sit as you wish. Once you have
settled in, the question arises, “now what?”
St. Clare of Assisi gave us a suggestion:
1. Gaze: Spend time simply looking at the Host. Take time to see Jesus Christ there. His Real Presence
is essential to our faith. It’s worth taking time in quiet connection.
2. Consider: Think of Jesus in the context of His life. Reflect on His ministry to the sick, his agony in the
garden and His passion, death and the resurrection that followed. Think of this great gift He offers you,
that you might spend some time with Him.
3. Contemplate: Pray. Pour your heart out to Christ. Ask Him to help you with your concerns and worries.
Thank Him for all His gifts. Praise Him for the glories of the world in which we live. Speak to Him as
you would a close friend. Jesus knows what you need; speak plainly from your heart.
4. Imitate: Eucharistic Adoration has had a profound effect on the lives of those who spend time in
communion with Him. The peace that surpasses all others is attainable through Adoration. Take His
peace back into your daily life.
This style of prayer can help you focus on Jesus during your time with Him.
There are other things you can do: Read a passage of scripture and reflect on it with Jesus; recite the rosary
reflecting on the moments of His life; keep a spiritual journal; read a spiritual book (look for one with prayers,
quotes from saints or specifically for Holy Hours).

Solano Summer Nights is a new educational/communitybuilding project the parish is sponsoring.
Please join us for a potluck dinner and a talk on a topic of
interest on the following Thursday evenings:

Catholic Men’s Fellowship
Catholic Men's Fellowship meets on the second and
fourth Tuesday evenings of each month. Dinner is at 6:30
PM and the program begins at 7 PM in the Parish Center.

Evening Bible Study
Scripture plays a central role in our Catholic faith: the entire first half of Mass is the Liturgy of the Word,
with a homily applying the weekly scriptures to our lives. Yet, how many of us have actually read and
studied the Bible and know what’s in it?
San Francisco Solano’s evening Bible study group will begin its 2016 summer session with the Gospel of
Mark. Our mission is to discover the Bible systematically, verse-by-verse, Genesis through Revelation,
utilizing a combination of audio taught by renowned literary scholar, Dr. Bill Creasy.
Dr. Creasy has been called “a Catholic Bible teacher extraordinaire” and “the Garrison Keillor of Bible

then worship and a message. The fun continues until

Backyard Theology at St. Kilian Church

potluck dinner followed by a speaker. Fr. Steve Sallot,
Vicar general/moderator for the curia in the Diocese of
Orange and former pastor at St. Edward’s Church will
speak this Tuesday, July 26. His topic is “From One
Corner of the Kitchen,” a view of our church of Orange
and the adventure of being part of it.

one or two bemused “scratching of heads?”

spiritual masters.

Fr. Tom Herbst, OFM has a BA in History, and a M.Div.
and a MA in Theology. He obtained a D.Phil. in Theology
from the University of Oxford in 2001. Fields of Interest:
Historical Theologies, Christian iconography, exegesis
with special reference to the Gospel of John, and
Systematic Theology with particular emphasis in
Christology and the Theology of Nature. He is also
interested in various fields of Franciscan Studies,
especially Franciscan Christology and the writings of
Francis and Clare.

Senior Vacation Retreat: Love and Mercy.

This summer’s senior vacation is focused on Pope
Francis’ message of Mercy toward all people and all
creation. We seniors have a lived through good and bad
times; we survived the struggles to raise a family, live a
single life, and served others so they experience the love
and respect they deserve.
It is our life experiences that opens our senses to believe
in God’s unconditional Mercy. During our retreat we will
reflect on Mercy and its influence on how we perceive
the world around us. There will be:
• Presentations & field trips
• Museum tour & Lavanderia walk
• Sunset at the ocean & rest for our bodies
So many of our seniors had such a good time on this
retreat, they requested we extend the time stay by an
optional two (2) nights. Please note the different rates for
each of the choices below.

Making Bereavement Ministry More Meaningful
The Office for Pastoral Care for Families in All Stages
and the Office of Worship with the sponsorship of
O’Connor Mortuary will be holding a bereavement
minister training. The goals for the training will be to:
• Revitalize one’s sense of spiritual care
• Discover the importance of being present
• Gain a renewed sense of the importance of the funeral
ritual
• Understand the role of community in bereavement and
how to include families in planning
• Review the new Guide to Catholic Funerals and Words
of Remembrance

Join us for a special fireside chat with dementia experts
Dr. Jane Mahakian, certified Geriatric Care Manager and
President of Aging Matters, Inc., and Vic Mazmanian,
Ministry Leader, Mind Heart Soul Ministry. This
interactive discussion will focus on the topics of aging,
dementia, and caring for those with memory impairments.

Backyard Theology is an opportunity to hear relevant
topics discussed in a casual atmosphere. We have
outstanding speakers lined up for this annual series. It is
also an opportunity to build community, increase your
knowledge, and enjoy great food!
The potluck dinner is from 6 PM to 7 PM. Everyone is
asked to bring a salad, side dish, or desert. We supply
the hamburgers, hotdogs and refreshments.
