Got deer roaring at him— one a 9 points and the other a 10 point but let them both go for another year when bigger. Got rained out on one trip—but lots of sign everywhere. Went to the Doolans and saw motorbikes everywhere so gave up Glen ANZAC weekend went with 4WD to Carrick and Nevis, mainly in the midst and wet and saw sign but no deer Jonno Climbed to the tops—and roared a stag in but then the wind changed. Saw lots of sign but no more deer or shots fired Pete Been out a few times, got a spiker that was looking at him funny otherwise a very quiet roar period Branden No been working too much again Page 6 April 2015 Dave D Been away twice over the roar, and finally learned how to roar a deer in. Last day before coming out, roared on a 7 pointer but due to tight deadlines too heavy to carry whole animal out so just took some meat. Got a ballot in Steele Creek with some mates and saw some but missed and only thing he killed on that trip were the mice in the hut. Shaun Been out finding chamois but no deer. Went “somewhere” to live under a rock at the head of the valley and found a 10” Chamois. Went to Lewis pass—up near Halpery with some friends and was told to meet them at the end of the farm. Drove through the farm then discovered the farm was Gloriavale. Felt very much like a goldfish in a bowl as everyone was watching hi with interest while they waited for the helicopter to arrive. First and last time for him in a R44, lots of snow on the tops and didn’t see anything worth shooting. Took a chamois for meat. Otherwise just been “ballistic testing” on 7 deer on his farm Dave R Went out for his 2 year anniversary to the North Branch to stay in the bivy. They arrived late afternoon had a sleep then decided to try out a roar to practice but to their surprise they got a reply. Dave headed down the gully still roaring to meet the stag, and was getting ready should he appear 100m or 200 m away then he popped out right next to him. So shot him. He was a big animal so the 1st shot in the shoulder and he still ran so 2nd in the lung stopped him. So with lots of meat, and success so soon on their 3 day trip they had lots of food they brought with them to eat before heading out the next morning. Got back and weighed packs 56kg for Dave and 23kg for Morgane with about 65kg of meat between them. Page 7 New New Zealand Zealand Deerstalkers Deerstalkers Association Association Incorporated Incorporated Southern Lakes Branch Hunts report continued…. Wayne—New member see story below Nathan Mainly been hunting for bunnies, got a suppressor recently on his 270 and was glad when 2nd shot was needed recently. Nathan took Wayne to Skippers and didn’t see too much at first, but saw some magpies at 500m and Wayne shot it. (He’s only ever previously shot long distance targets). They carried into Skippers and shot 2 goats but the 3rd jumped off the cliff. Then they headed to private property and drove as far as they could on the 4wd then hiked uphill and glassed. Then spotted antlers about 300m away so Nathan handed Wayne the 270, first shot missed so he was glad of the recent suppressor purchase, but got it on the 2nd shot. Then they were worried they wouldn't find it as it was on the other side of some thick scrub but luckily it fell on a quad bike track. Took backsteaks, head and meat. Waynes first shot and it was 12 points! David—New member Went to mates farm down south, it’s a dairy farm and one foggy morning once it lifted on the bush line was a stag but they left him till the next morning when they returned and roared him out, shot him and had to follow blood trail 100m into the bush to find him. Dragged him out 7 points and as they got him in the clearing they spotted a yearling so shot that too. Mark Page 8 Went to Steele Creek on the working bee but saw no fresh sign. Then on the last night spotted 3 in the binos so headed out with Will to stalk them. Was just on dusk and fired a shot but missed. Will wasn’t expecting such a loud shot (270) and jumped a mile in the air Then over ANZAC weekend headed to West Coast to visit Kaylyn. April 2015 Mark Cont.. Went for a Chamois hunt but got to river pool with no easy way past the river and rain was due so headed back but was really surprised to see 12 large salmon in the rock pool. Aaron Went to Stewart island and although no deer saw a brown kiwi bird.. (and paua) Alex Went for a walk up Kowhai bush, no sign so enjoyed the walk and headed to the pub for a beer instead Andy P No not need out Will Went to Mt Crieghton to look around and glass as still waiting on licence, Went for hunt with Mark at Greenstone working bee Dennis—New member Nothing Bruce Nothing Phil Went out on Sat saw 6 goats, fallow and shot a buck but due to so much rain gave up and came home Lee Spent a week in the Forks in the Hunter Valley, Lots of old sign—saw a hind but didn’t shoot anything Reminded us about Red Stag hunting program on Sky sports 2 as he was in in last week with a few of our members Mike Flew into Killacranky (Cecil Peak Station) as he has been helping build the hut there for them. Took his rifle anyway—there were 4 of them so 2 headed off and didn’t shoot anything so the next morning they had a shooting competition and shot a hare at 280m Sharon Went for a walk to shoot a deer that had got trapped in a bush block on the farm but heavy rain and we couldn't find it so nothing Ben—new member Nothing Meeting closed at 9.50pm Page 9 New New Zealand Zealand Deerstalkers Deerstalkers Association Association Incorporated Incorporated Southern Lakes Branch Trophy Mount For the meeting, Nathan brought in Waynes deer head and Dave Rider showed up how to cut it for a mount.
