Arab films capture
the mood of revolution
REUTERS
HE Arab Spring (pro-democracy
uprisings) features prominently
— both directly and more subtly
— in the selections at the third annual
Doha Tribeca Film Festival, which
kicked off in the Qatari capital on
Tuesday.
The festival, launched in 2009 in
Doha, seeks to showcase the work of
Arab filmmakers who this year were
able to draw on the momentous political changes in their own countries for
artistic inspiration.
Highlights include Rouge Parole,
set in the tumult of revolutionary
Tunisia, which charts the expulsion of
its president and the country’s first
steps toward democracy.
Sherif El Bendary’s On the Road to
Downtown, set in Cairo’s Tahrir
Square, follows the lives and hopes of
six people connected in different ways
to the city’s downtown core.
“Our selection of documentaries
T
provides for reflection on
political change. But we also
offer a number of films that
look into private worlds and
subtler aspects of the Middle
Eastern experience that are
not always evident to political
observers,” said the festival’s
Chief Arab Programer, Hania
Mroue.
“The Virgin, the Copts and
Me” takes on an otherworldly
subject in investigating the
appearance of the Virgin Mary to millions of Egyptians via a videotape on
which only true believers can see her
image.
“This is a very important film for
post-revolutionary Egypt, as it sheds
light on the Coptic community, which
was taboo to do a few years ago,”
Mroue said.
The Algerian title “Normale” examines what happened in the Algerian
street as neighboring countries’ dictators were being toppled.
“The youth in Algeria
felt they could now
express themselves more
freely. The film addresses
the revolution in a very
subtle way,” she said.
Lina
Alabed’s
“Yearning” focuses on the
lives of women in
Damascus and their
approach to personal freedom in a society dominated by men.
Women are also the focus in two
sports documentaries that examine
the taboos surrounding women and
boxing in Tunisia (“Boxing with
Her”), and the life-altering experience of a young women’s basketball
team in northern Iraq (“Salaam
Dunk”).
Other headliners include the world
premiere of “Black Gold” with
Antonio Banderas, set in the 1930s at
the dawn of the oil boom and the first
major motion picture shot in Qatar.
Laila Hotait Salas’ “Crayons of
Askalan” recreates the powerful
story of Palestinian artist Zuhdi al
Adawi, imprisoned at the age of
15 in Israel’s notorious Askalan
jail.
Qatar launched the film festival
as a partnership between the Doha
Film Institute and Tribeca
Enterprises, which also operates
New York’s Tribeca Film Festival.
Created as a way to rejuvenate
lower Manhattan after the
September 11, 2001 attacks which
destroyed the World Trade Center,
the Tribeca Film Festival in New York
has become a showcase for international films with a political edge.
Organizers said the Doha event
aims to do the same, using the festival
to shine a spotlight on Arab cinema.
“We don’t want to focus only
on the big names, we want to
give space also for new voices,
especially from the region,”
Mroue said.

Cole feels liberated after completing studies
Lopez cries on stage
ACTRESS Lily Cole felt “hugely liberated” after completing her
degree at the University of Cambridge. The 23-year-old actress
obtained a degree in the history of art. “I feel hugely liberated. I’m
super glad that I managed to finish it - and semi-surprised,” said
Cole. “The closest I came to not finishing it was the day before my
last exam. I was so exhausted. I’d been drinking a lot of coffee. I
would never mind not doing the best if I felt like I gave my best
effort,” she added.
SINGER Jennifer Lopez broke down on stage while singing a song about her past
love life. “I’m going to sing you the last song I wrote about love. A lot has
changed since then,” Lopez, who recently split from husband Marc Anthony, told
the audience in Connecticut. 42-year-old Lopez, then started singing Until it
beats no more while the dancers were seen re-enacting scenes with the singer
and some of the men from her past, reports people.com. A Lopez lookalike also
danced with men who looked a lot like her ex-boyfriends Diddy, Cris Judd and
Ben Affleck.

Roberts co-starred with Liam Neeson in Michael
Collins (1996). Over the next few years, she starred
in a series of films that were critical and commercial failures, such as Stephen Frears’ Mary Reilly
(1996).
Roberts overcame these with the commercial and
critical success of My Best Friend’s Wedding in
1997. In 1998, she appeared on Sesame Street opposite the character Elmo, demonstrating her ability to
change emotions. She was offered the role of Viola
de Lesseps in Shakespeare in Love (1998), but
turned it down. She starred with Hugh Grant in
Notting Hill (1999). That same year she also
starred in Runaway Bride, her second film with
Richard Gere. Roberts was a guest star on the Law
& Order television series episode Empire with
series regular Benjamin Bratt. Also in 1999 she
starred in the critically panned film
Stepmom (1998) alongside Susan
Sarandon.
1986–1989
2001–2005
J
Roberts made her first big screen appearance in
the film Satisfaction (1988), released on February
12, 1988, as a prostitute with, as she put it, “a heart
of cocaine”. She had previously performed a small
role opposite her brother, Eric, in Blood Red (1986).
She has two words of dialogue), filmed in 1987 and

performance in the independent film Mystic Pizza
in 1988; that same year, she had a role in the fourth
season finale of Miami Vice. In 1989, she was featured in Steel Magnolias, as a young bride with diabetes, and received both her first Academy Award
nomination as Best Supporting Actress and first
Golden Globe Award win Motion Picture Best
Supporting Actress for her performance.
1990–2000
Roberts became known to worldwide audiences
when she co-starred with Richard Gere in the
Cinderella/Pygmalionesquestory, Pretty Woman,
in 1990. Roberts won the role after Michelle Pfeiffer,
Molly Ringwald, Meg Ryan, Jennifer Jason
Leigh,Karen Allen, and Daryl Hannah.
The role also earned her a second Oscar nomination, this time as Best Actress, and second Golden
Globe Award win, as Motion Picture Best Actress.
Her next box office success was the thriller Sleeping
with the Enemy, playing a battered wife who
escapes her abusive husband, played by Patrick
Bergin, and begins a new life in Iowa. She played
Tinkerbell in Steven Spielberg’s Hook in 1991, and
also played a nurse in the 1991 film, Dying Young.
This work was followed by a two-year hiatus, during which she made no films other than a cameo
appearance in Robert Altman’s The Player (1992).
In early 1993, she was the subject of a People magazine cover story asking, “What Happened to Julia

Sleepless in Seattle (1993), but turned it down.
Roberts co-starred with Denzel Washington in
The Pelican Brief (1993), based on John Grisham’s
1992 novel of the same name. In 1995, she appeared
in season 2 of Friends. Roberts recorded her scenes
from January 6–8, 1996. She had a relationship with
cast member Matthew Perry at the time and an
audience member said about their on-screen kiss,
“Julia looked at Matt and said ‘I’m glad we rehearsed
this over the weekend’.
She was offered the role of Lucy Eleanor

Award for Best Actress
Julia
Roberts had become
one of the highest-paid
actresses in the world, topping the
Hollywood Reporter’s annual “power
list” of top-earning female stars from
2005 to 2006. As of 2010, Roberts’s
net worth was estimated to be
$140 million
for her portrayal of
Erin Brockovich, who helped wage a successful
lawsuit against energy giant Pacific Gas & Electric.
While presenting the Best Actor Award to Denzel
Washingtonthe following year she made a gaffe,
saying she was glad that Tom Conti wasn’t there.
She meant the conductor, Bill Conti, who had tried
to hasten the conclusion of her Oscar speech the
previous year, but instead named the Scottish
actor.
Roberts team with Erin Brockovich director
Steven Soderbergh for three more films: Ocean’s
Eleven (2001), Full Frontal (2002),
and Ocean’s Twelve (2004).
Later in 2001 she starred in
the road gangster comedy, The Mexican, giving her a chance to
work with long-time
friend, Brad Pitt.
In 2005 she
was featured
in the music
video for the hit single Dreamgirl by the Dave
Matthews Band; it was her first music video
appearance.
2006–present
Roberts had two films released in 2006, The
Ant Bully and Charlotte’s Web. Both films
were animated features for which she provided voice acting. Her next film was Charlie
Wilson’s War (2007), with Tom Hanks and
Philip Seymour Hoffman, directed by Mike
Nichols and based on the book by former CBS
journalist George Crile; it was released on
December 21, 2007.
Fireflies in the Garden (2008), also starring
Ryan Reynolds and Willem Dafoe, was released at
the Berlin International Film Festival in February
2008. Roberts made her Broadway debut on April
19, 2006 as Nan in a revival of Richard Greenberg’s
1997 play Three Days of Rain opposite Bradley
Cooper and Paul Rudd.
Although the play grossed nearly US$1 million
dollars in ticket sales during its first week and was
a commercial success throughout its limited run,
her performance drew criticism. New York Times’
critic Ben Brantly described her as being fraught
with “self-consciousness” and only glancingly
acquainted with the two characters she plays.”
Brantley also criticised the production of
“Greenberg’s slender, elegant play,” writing that
“it’s almost impossible to discern its artistic
virtues from this wooden and splintered interpretation, directed by Joe Mantello. Three Days of
Rain received two Tony Award nominations in
stagecraft categories. Julia starred with Clive
Owen in the comedy-thriller Duplicity for which
she received her seventh Golden Globe nomination.
In 2010, she appeared in the ensemble romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, with Cooper, and
starred in the film adaptation of Eat Pray Love.
Eat Pray Love had the highest debut at the box
office for Roberts in a top-billed role since
America’s Sweethearts. Later in the year, she
signed a five-year extension with Lancome for
GB£32 million (US$50 million). In 2011, she costarred as Mercedes Tainot opposite Tom Hanks
who directed and played the title role in the
romantic comedy Larry Crowne. The movie has
received generally bad reviews with only 35% of
the 175 Rotten Tomatoes reviews giving it high
ratings, although Roberts’ comedic performance
was praised.
Beliefs
Roberts disclosed in a 2010 interview for Elle
magazine that she believes in and practices
Hinduism. Roberts is a devotee of Neem Karoli
Baba (Maharaj-ji).
Charities
Roberts has given her time and resources
to UNICEF as well as to other charitable
organisations. On May 10, 1995, Roberts
arrived in Port-au-Prince, as she said, “to
educate myself”. The poverty she found
was overwhelming. “My heart is just bursting”, she said. UNICEF officials hoped
that her six-day visit would trigger
an outburst of giving: $10 million in
aid was sought at
the time.
In
2000,
Roberts narrated
Silent Angels, a
documentary
about Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder, which was
shot in Los Angeles,
Baltimore and New York. The documentary was
designed to help raise public awareness about
the disease. In July 2006, Earth Biofuels
announced Roberts as a spokeswoman for the
company and as chair of the company’s newly
formed Advisory Board promoting the use of
renewable fuels.

Foods that keep us warm in cold days
DURING winter the cold weather lowers blood pH therefore making it more acidic, and in order to compensate for this acidic blood
pH we need to eat foods that will help to raise, or alkaline, blood pH levels. By doing this your body’s chemistry will be balanced
and as a result you will feel warmer and more comfortable this winter. Eating foods such as protein and fat can help to raise the
blood pH back into the normal range, therefore this winter try eating plenty of meat, fish, eggs, nuts and high fat dairy and you
should feel warmer. Eating foods that contain niacin will also help to warm you up during the cold months. Niacin, which is a vitamin, also known as vitamin B3, helps to stabilise the nervous system and boost the circulatory system. It plays a role in expanding
the capillaries, thus getting more blood to warm up the hands and the feet. Foods like milk, eggs and cheese all contain a good
quantity of niacin, and other abundant in this B vitamin include animal liver, sesame, and peanuts, as well as all-wheat products.

Nutrition facts on food packets
must be made simpler: Experts
Front-package labels have grown
in popularity over the last decade,
but because there are so many
different nutrition symbols and
rating systems, many shoppers
have just become confused
STEVEN REINBERG
HEALTHDAY NEWS
S agencies should revamp the labels
on the front of food and beverage
packages to make it as simple as
possible for consumers to figure out
how nutritious a product really is, a
new Institute of Medicine report concludes.
“There are a lot of different [rating] systems
out there,” said Ellen Wartella, chair of the IOM
committee that wrote the report, and director of
the Canter on Media and Human Development
at Northwestern University. “But no one system
has all the features we think are most helpful.
Our goal is to say no one has to be a nutrition
scientist to discern whether a packaged food is
healthy or not healthy.”
“We want something that’s readily identifiable, easily understood and that cues the consumer that this is a healthy product,” Wartella
added.
The report suggests creating a rating system
that uses symbols to convey calorie counts by
serving size, and a point system that tells consumers whether the levels of saturated fats,
trans fats, sodium and sugar in the products are
more or less healthy than recommended.
Front-package labels have grown in popularity over the last decade, but because there are so
many different nutrition symbols and rating
systems, many shoppers have just become confused, Wartella said.
The IOM committee recommends that front
packaging labels be standardised and, at the
same time, motivate food and beverage companies to reformulate products to be healthier and
get food stores to prominently display products
that meet healthier standards.
The committee’s concept is for the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture to develop and test
labels that are visual and easy to understand.
The idea is that government food labels can
serve the same purpose as the government’s
Energy Star program, which rates appliances by
their energy efficiency.
The label should also be located in the same
spot on all products, and reflect the current
healthy dietary recommendations from the
USDA and other groups.
A single system would let consumers quickly
compare choices within a variety of food cate-
U
gories, the report said.
Determining whether or not a product can
carry a healthy food package label would be
done on a point system based on how much
sugar, salt and fat it contained. These were
picked because they are linked to obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure, among other illnesses.
To be eligible for a “healthy” label, the product
would have to have limited amounts of sugar,
salt and trans fats, the IOM committee said.
“For example, 100 percent whole-wheat bread
could earn all three
points; graham crackers could earn two
points for fats and
sodium; and an oatand-peanut butter bar
could earn one point
for sodium,” the committee noted.
Items with the most
points would signal to
consumers that these
are the healthiest
choices.
Samantha Heller,
clinical
nutrition
coordinator at the
Canter for Cancer
Care
at
Griffin
Hospital in Derby,
Conn., said that “one
of the reasons nutrition labels are so confusing is that nutrition
is very complicated.
“In fact, the current
labeling system is so
confounding to consumers that as part of a
series of adult nutrition classes, I devote a onehour class to reading and understanding the
Nutrition Facts Panel,” she added.
Simplifying front package labeling so consumers can make healthier choices is a great
idea if the IOM can make it work, Heller said. “It
is a huge undertaking and fraught with difficulties on many levels, from the food companies
push-back to consumer understanding and education,” she said.
It is difficult to apply the same standards to
all foods, Heller said. “Some healthy foods may
come up short and some less-than-healthy
foods may end up getting more checks than
they really deserve,” she noted. “All this said,
we do need an easy guidance system of some
kind that will encourage consumers to make
informed decisions about their food choices.
The real question is, will a ratings system ultimately affect peoples buying habits or their
health?” she added.
The Grocery Manufacturers Association has
already come up with its own labeling system.
“In
January,
the
Grocery
Manufacturers Association and
the Food Marketing Institute
launched Facts Up Front, a factbased, front-of-pack nutrition
labeling system to help busy
consumers — especially parents
— make informed decisions
when they shop,” said association spokesman Brian Kennedy.
The IOM report is an addition
to the national dialogue about
such
nutrition
labeling,
Kennedy said.
“However, it is largely an academic exercise, like many
before it. The point-based system recommended by the IOM
is unproven, complex and therefore likely to be confusing. It
would also fail to provide consumers with the simple and
clear facts they want,” he added.
“Meanwhile, food and beverage
companies have developed a
real-world program that delivers real value to consumers in
real time.”

incredible,” said the 33-year-old Usher.

Kelly Clarkson comes
out STRONGER
AP
BY CRISTINA JALERU
ELLY Clarkson has been wowing audiences with her powerful voice since she burst onto
the scene as the first
American Idol winner a
decade ago. Since then, the dynamic singer
has sold millions by making female
empowerment anthems her mantra, from
booming pop-rock songs that call for
women to stand up for themselves to finger-wagging tunes that tell not-goodenough men that they’re not good enough.
Clarkson’s fifth studio album, Stronger,
addresses the same issues with a “richer
and fuller” sound than usual: Clarkson
said she wanted to sound like she does
when performing live, without employing
any of the modern day tuning aides. The
result is a more natural sound that allows
her already explosive voice to bloom even
more.
The record is full of danceable tracks
that just won’t budge from your humming
repertoire. Whether it’s pop, rock, 1980s
riffs or electro streaks, Stronger has all the
ingredients for a well-balanced offering.
Clarkson worked on the eclectic record
with a variety of A-list producers such as
Rodney Jerkins, Greg Kurstin, Josh
Abraham, and Toby Gad. She also cowrote five of the album’s tracks.
First single Mr. Know It All hits all the
right notes by going for the jugular, with
lyrics like You ain’t got the right to tell me/
When and where to go, and Mr. Bring me
down/ Well ya like to bring me down
don’t ya/ But I ain’t laying down. Along
the way, her unstoppable voice channels
Bonnie Tyler and Tori Amos in Honestly,
which urges for complete disclosure (even
if the truth hurts); I Forgive You and You
Can’t Win sound like they were made for
the soundtrack of an adorable rom-com.
Only Clarkson can beguile with a ballad
like Dark Side, half music box chimes, half
pop anthem. Everybody has a dark
