.lc w ww rg o . s -p MONTH YEAR VOL. 17 NO. 3 03 13 Find us on FBI Awards at Green Elementary Newest members of the Junior FBI in Macomb County are right here at L’Anse Creuse. Nearly 100 fourth grade students from Green Elementary received their badges as Special Junior FBI Agents at a graduation ceremony on March 14. Currently, Green Elementary is the only school in Macomb County participating in the project and this is their fourth year. During the eight week program, FBI agents speak to the students about the history of the FBI, the importance of using conflict resolution skills, developing good decision making skills, drug awareness, gun safety, eating right, physical fitness, and investigative techniques, such as fingerprints and surveillance, The program has been a huge success for Green Elementary. “Students today have very few good role models,” said Green Elementary Principal, Culinary Arts Awards Chef Scott Satterly, Culinary Arts instructor at the Pankow Center, led his students at the SkillsUSA Region 2 East competition in Romeo on March 9-10. Three students placed and will move on to compete at the state competition in April: Eileen Hielscher. “The FBI agents who share their experiences with the children are educated, well spoken and live their lives to help others. These are the people our children should know and admire.” •L’Anse Creuse High School student Adam Angelucci, placed 1st in the Hot Foods Competition •Pankow Center student Hannah Rygwelski, placed 2nd in the Hot Foods Competition Angelucci •L’Anse Creuse High School student Bailey Chavez, placed 3rd in the Baking Competition Chef Scott Statterly, Chef Dan Mallo and their culinary team. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. Their goal is for each student to excel and work together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Rygwelski Chavez Superintendent spotlight by Jacqueline Johnston Public schools are the cornerstone of democracy and a true example of a community working together to create an educated citizenry fully empowered to contribute to society. What makes public schools truly special is we provide children a quality education, giving them the opportunity to become whoever they want to be. I am a strong advocate for public schools and I hope you are too. Michigan public schools have faced many challenges over the past few years; many of those are the result of a struggling economy. Districts throughout the state have suffered cuts in funding and declining enrollment. Through all of the obstacles public schools are facing, students are still succeeding at high levels. This success is the direct result of dedicated and committed students, staff, parents and community members working together to maximize the potential of our future leaders as steel workers, artists, doctors and much more. Today a larger number of students throughout the state are graduating prepared for their future after high school. At L’Anse Creuse Public Schools, the average 2012 graduation rate for our traditional high schools is 92.5 percent, a 6.1 percent increase from 2011. Additionally, our alternative high school graduation rate leapt 18.4 percent from last year. We are extremely proud of the improvements and will continue to strive for the best, a 100 percent graduation rate. The increase in student graduation at L’Anse Creuse is the culmination of your hard work. It is a rigorous journey, from kindergarten through grade 12, with each year presenting a challenging curriculum and opportunities to grow. An example of that hard work is the recent Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) scores. Students throughout the state are showing gains in the MEAP for writing, reading and mathematics in all grade levels and most demographics. Closer to home, L’Anse Creuse students, grades third through ninth, outperformed county and state averages and improved on last year’s scores in almost all subject areas and grade levels. Our students ranked first in the county in seventh grade reading and eighth grade reading and science. The latest statistics are indicators of our students achieving their personal best. In combination with student achievement, other aspects that contribute to our success are a strong focus on student safety, a nurturing learning environment and expansive programming providing all students opportunities to excel. L’Anse Creuse Public Schools is an exemplary district due to your unique contributions as a parent, student, staff member or community member. Every day I am so appreciative of our stakeholders’ involvement and I thank you. Rock-em’ Sockem’ Robotics by James Coller, Senior at LCHS - N The L’Anse Creuse Public Schools FIRST Robotics team, Rock-em’ Sockem’ Robotics, competed on March 16 at the St. Joseph MI FIRST Robotics District Competition. At the event, LCPS team members were able to modify their robot in order to successfully climb a 10-foot pyramid twice, an accomplishment no other team achieved. The team was eliminated in the quarter final match but was honored with the Judge’s Award for the robot’s engineering excellence and uniqueness. “The team was faced with some difficult technical challenges during the event,” said team mentor Al Deboni, an engineer for TRW. “Pulling together students, teachers, and mentors allowed us to brainstorm an elegant solution to the issue and we implemented it in record time. Although they lost in the quarter finals, they did win the coveted Judge’s Award due to the machine’s ability to perform certain tasks others simply couldn’t.” Rock-em’ Sock-em’ Robotics, is based out of the F.V. Pankow Center. For more information, contact team mentor Nick Paterni at [email protected]. The team will compete again at Troy Athens High School March 29-30. Board of Education news Pamela Hornberger, Trustee, earned the Award of Distinction from the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) for accumulating over 208 credits of continuing education and achieving level 3 of 7. Hornberger has served on L’Anse Creuse Board of Education for nearly three years. Donald Hubler, Secretary, achieved the Advocacy Skills Specialty certification from MASB after completing six certified boardmember award classes focusing on community and media relations, public speaking, advocacy for public education, spokesperson training and one elective of this nature. Hubler has served on the L’Anse Creuse Board of Education for seven years. 2 L’Anse Creuse High School – North Alumni goes Pro Steven Oleksy, 2004 L’Anse Creuse High School - North graduate, recently signed to play professional hockey for the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Washington Capitals. Oleksy grew up in Chesterfield, playing hockey around the metro Detroit area. He played for several teams following high school and college, with the most recent being the Hershey Bears based in Pennsylvania. After 55 games with the Bears and ranking third among AHL defenseman in penalty minutes, Oleksy was signed to his first NHL deal with the Washington Capitals. Oleksy signed the three-year deal, two-way contract on March 4. In his NHL debut, he registered an assist for the Capitals in a 4-3 comeback victory over the Boston Bruins. Oleksy contributes his success to perseverance and consistency, along with a strong support system, including his family, coaches and teachers. He will be back in Michigan this summer for his sixth year hosting youth hockey summer camps. “I do [the camps] to give back to a sport that has given so much to me,” Oleksy said. “I enjoy working with the kids.” Elementary Schools Recognized by State The State of Michigan has recognized two L’Anse Creuse elementary schools as Reward Schools for high student achievement and making tremendous progress. Joseph M. Carkenord Elementary School has been identified as a High Progress Reward School for showing significant improvement and sustaining growth over several years. LCHS Broadcasters Earn MAB Awards “We are extremely proud of these schools being recognized by the state,” said Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum Edward Okuniewski. “Our dedicated staff, in cooperation with parents, strive to assure all students are achieving at the highest level possible. This recognition validates their efforts.” L’Anse Creuse High School seniors, Adam Abraham and Brad Tunney, received an award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) in Lansing on March 13. Abraham and Tunney, who have been student broadcasters since their freshman year, will receive an honorable mention award for television sports play-by-play. This is the 5th MAB award for Abraham and 3rd for Tunney. “I am extremely proud of Adam and Brad’s accomplishments,” said Steve Miller, Broadcasting Instructor at L’Anse Creuse High School. “Since entering our program as freshman, they have worked very hard to improve their skills as student broadcasters and this award is a great capstone to their high school broadcast careers.” Both Abraham and Tunney plan on attending Central Michigan University in the fall to study broadcasting. Prom and homecoming are prime times for underage drinking. Make sure your child has a precise plan for the evening and that you know all the details. Work with the school to have party-control procedures in place. For example, specific times of arrival and departure and backpack checks. (Kids often carry a change of clothes and alcohol in their backpacks.) Host parties before and after the prom with plenty of food and adult chaperones. If teens are attending a postprom party, know the location and check it out ahead of time. Ask about alcohol use and enforcement. Know who is going to be driving. For limo services, check their policy on allowing alcohol in the vehicle. Be aware that teens often tip limo drivers to purchase alcohol for them. Discuss prom rules (both yours and their schools’) with your child and the consequences for violating them. Do not rent hotel rooms for prom-goers. A parent whose credit card is used to rent a hotel room is liable for damages. Communicate frequently with other parents and school officials, kids often make last minute changes to their plans. 6 Pankow’s TV & Broadcast Media student earn awards Lauren Mueller, junior from L’Anse Creuse High School - North, won two awards for her Public Service Announcement (PSA) “Wanna Get Buzzed?” which looks at the dangers of alcohol abuse from a unique perspective. Mueller’s animated film took first place in the PSA competition and second place in the overall festival. “With close to 100 student films represented from some of the best video programs in the tri-county area, that’s quite an accomplishment,” said Michael Kaufman, TV & Broadcast Media instructor. The PSA can be viewed on the L’Anse Creuse Public Schools YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCGp DndSfDk&list=UUEpLQXIsdIwmdBfrt0-CZnQ. Chinese Students Visit from Wuhan, China In February, a group of six students and one teacher from Wuhan, China visited L’Anse Creuse. Wuhan is an auto-manufacturing hub in central China. During their two week stay, the Chinese students were fully immersed in American Culture and had the opportunity to visit the Palace of Auburn Hills to root on the Pistons, attend a high school dance, ice skate at Campus Martius Park, and tour local museums and colleges. The Chinese students stayed with L’Anse Creuse host families, who also treated them to local attractions like Gibraltar Trade Center, dinner at Lafayette Coney Island, and a shopping spree at Somerset Collection. The students gave excellent feedback on their visit, and several of them expressed a desire to return for a longer-term exchange in the District. Greg Henery, Mandarin Chinese teacher at the Pankow Center and trip coordinator said, “L’Anse Creuse is seeking to increase the global awareness and cultural sensitivity of its students. Visits like this from our Chinese partners accomplish those District goals, while hopefully attracting more Chinese students to the exchange program here in L’Anse Creuse.” Winter Sports in brief L’Anse Creuse High School – North Boys Basketball..............................
