Here we are on the door step of spring; another two months have rolled by since the last news
letter and we are in a bit of a hiatus since the World of Wheels. The WoW was a fantastic show,
and the club put on a terrific display. We didn’t win the placing we wanted, but boy did we have
fun, and the audience genuinely enjoyed our display. Hats off to the Nifty Fifties and Mopar boys
they did a good job and should enjoy their trophy for this year, as we will be back with a
vengeance next year. Our activity directors Jim and Gary did us proud again this year and the
wheels are already turning on next years show. There were more club volunteers out to help with
this display than any other, and that is really what its all about, and all that counts at the end of the
day.
Next on our agenda is Spring Fling on April 12, and I encourage everyone to come out and have a
good time. There is a great supper planned to be followed by some gambling with fun money and
prizes to be auctioned off using the fun money. This event is a thank you to club members, and is
subsidized by the club. You cannot go out for an evening of entertainment for any less money.
Come out and show your support for your club.
Our club shirt is bright red with a big logo
on the back; it is definitely noticeable
wherever you wear it. So here is the
challenge; wear your shirt while travelling
and take a picture at a distinguishable
land mark. Each year the club member
who can verify that he has gone the
farthest from Calgary, and worn his club
shirt will get the long distance travelled
reward. We have yet to determine what
the award will be, but I am sure our
executive will come up with a most
appropriate award.
After the Spring Fling will be the Run to
the Sun, aka Peach Land Show and Shine. This show was great last year with several of our
members winning a trophy. The location is truly outstanding with the Lake Okanagan as a back
drop. This year promises to be better with the Summerland show and Peach land show merging
to be one great show. Treasurer Norm is organizing this trip; please contact Norm if you are
interested, ( Norm advises, it will “not be an inexpensive week end” ).
If your car is not yet ready to hit the road, you will want to skin some knuckles, get oil on you
hands, and do what ever you have to; as this promises to be a good year to have your car on the
road in Calgary. Most of all enjoy your car, and promise yourself that this is the year get it out of
that stuffy garage.

AMAC events for 2008 will be in
support of the Calgary Women’s
Emergency Shelter. Fund raising for
this wonderful agency will now be a
part of each of our events. This
means when you participate in a club
event part of your admission or
registration costs will go to the
Shelter. One more great reason to
participate in AMAC activities.

Is the Remake as good as the Original?
Ford has had great success resurrecting mythical names from the past. The Mustang treasure chest of names
includes Shelby, Mach, Boss, California Special and Bullitt. To the enthusiast these names bring back fond
memories from the wide and wooly days of the late 1960’s.
The Shelby GT500’s and the California Special slammed into the market in 2006/07 without a single whimper
from the competition. Many people are now saying that the new “muscle car era” has started and the Mustang
is blazing a trail for everyone else.. sounds like 1964 ½ again doesn’t it? In 2008 we have the Bullitt and are
promised a 2009 Boss or Mach 1 within the next year.
Ok, the new stuff is really cool but is the re-creation any better or worse than the original? Does the new car
have an edge to it or is it just a nice marketing ploy? Well, these are some of questions that I plan to find an
answer to because I bought a 2008 California Special (“Cal Spec”).
When I bought the Cal Spec I was curious to see how it compares to the original? If you take into
consideration that the 2 versions were built 40 years part you do see some striking similarities in that:
Both interiors are visually stunning with the 2008 model taking many styling cues from the 1968 model (in my
mind the sexiest dash ever made);
Both look distinctive with the side stripes, fake side scoops and fog lights dressing up the exterior;
Both cars were well priced for specialty models;
Both models are relatively low volume option packages, which makes collectibility a positive byproduct.
So is the 2008 Cal Spec as good as the original? Will it be collectable in 40 years? Maybe, but I don’t really
care! In 40 years my biggest concern will be soiling my diapers and drooling in my soup. Truth be told I just
want to have a little fun and will let someone else worry about collectibility in 2048! Stay tuned for the
upgrades to follow.
Why Import a Mustang from the USA?
That’s so simple, TO SAVE MONEY!
For those of you interested in importing a car from the USA I just finished tallying the costs I incurred
purchasing my 2008 California Special. The total cost was just over $29k as shown below:
Purchase price - used 2008 Mustang GT California Special ($26,795 US)
Shipping from Phoenix to Great Falls ($900 US)
878 CDN
Travel to Great Falls
GST
Registration fee for RIV
Out of Province Inspection & Daytime Running Lights
Total Cost
$26,141 CDN
300 CDN
1,300 CDN
195 CDN
500 CDN
$29,314 CDN
The Cal Spec had 1,000 miles on it and is very well equipped including heated seats, ambient lighting, sirrus
radio, blue tooth hands free cell phone, 3.55 traction loc rear axle, appearance group and a few other goodies.
If I had bought a brand new 2008 Cal Spec the overall cost would have increased to roughly $32k.

The process to find the car was relatively simple:
Information on all the import procedures can be founded at www.riv.ca and this is something you need to read up
on before you start the process;
Use Ebay to identify the Ford dealers that are heavily discounting Mustangs;
Contacted at least ten dealers and solicit responses;
Chose two dealers to cross shop against each other;
View inventory online, run car faxes on all used cars and negotiate the final price;
Ask the dealer to help arrange transport and store the car until transport is available;
To save a little money ship the car to the US/Canada border, pick it up and handle the importing yourself;
Remember to send your export papers / bill of sale to the border 72 hours ahead of time.
When to get the border go to US Customs first to get you clearance to export;
When finished on US side go through the Canadian customs, pay the GST and fill out the RIV Form 1;
You have 45 days to have the RIV inspection and the out of province inspection done (used cars only). This
process takes only 10 minutes max if everything is ok.
Russ Penner drove down with me to Great Falls to help bring back the Mustang. Everything went very well for
me at the border but Russ had a “few complications”. It all started when Russ drove my wife’s recently imported
Subaru back from Montana and informed the border guard he only had a few beers to declare. The border guard
sees the “Placer Motors, Helena Montana” front license plate on the Subaru and gets really suspicious. Russ
pays the duty on the beer and then the Canada Customs official tells him to drive over to the inspection station.
Russ complies, drives into the inspection garage, the door closes and they proceed to rip everything out of the
car. A female inspection officer starts grilling Russ about the car and asks him about the “Placer Motors” front
license plate. This third degree continues until they finally find documentation that the car is registered in Canada
and has the correct RIV sticker in the glove box. I can only imagine what was going through poor old Russ’s
mind!
Meanwhile I’m breezing through the paperwork to import the Mustang. Within a couple of minutes I was cleared
to go! I turned around looking for Russ but he was nowhere to be found. I thought maybe he got bored waiting for
me and had driven up the road to Coutts. Maybe he was waiting for me on the side of road? So I jumped into the
Cal Spec and starting driving towards Lethbridge. After a few minutes I realized that something was wrong and
pulled over to the side of the road. Where the heck was he?.. Where is my wife’s new Subaru?.. Has something
happened?
Well, about five minutes later Russ shows up visibly agitated and clearly upset. Russ proceeds to tell me about
his plight with the aggressive border guards. I tried really hard not to laugh but was not very successful in hiding
my emotions. What I can tell you is that Russ will be reluctant to help me import another car in the future!
Once back in Canada I filled out my RIV forms online, waited for the response and setup the necessary
appointments. Since the Cal Spec was “used” I needed an out of province inspection ($200 for one hours work at
Crowfoot Ford) and daytime running lights ($250 for ten minutes work at Crowfoot Ford) before going to
Canadian Tire for the RIV inspection (five minutes max – no charge). The Cal Spec is now safely resting in my
garage until spring truly arrives.
What did I learn about the import process? What I can tell you, from my experiences, is that you should:
Look for a used or a demo Mustang first. With used cars you don’t have to worry about Ford USA rebates issues;
Negotiate hard, because with the current economy conditions in the US the Ford dealers are more than willing to
deal;
Continued……
15
Take the time to compare the differences in the options packages offered in the US as compared to those
Canada;
Remember you are saving “after tax” dollars ($8k “after tax” = $12k “pre tax”);
Prearrange financing in Canada because you will not qualify for the Ford USA financing rates.
The Canadian retail for a well-equipped Cal Spec is between $40 - $42k plus GST. Even with rebates and a
little haggling the Canadian price of a similarly equipped Mustang would be somewhere around $38k plus GST.
This means I saved $11k by buying used or about $8k if I had purchased a new 2008 Mustang GT.
What are downsides? Well, you have the hassle of:
Finding the right car through the internet;
Negotiating with a seller via the telephone or email;
Arranging transportation to get the car home;
Organizing the inspections and evaluations to get the car
registered in Canada.
Would I do it again? Absolutely yes, lets go tomorrow!
Anytime I can save $8 to $11k on a $40k car I’m more
than willing to talk deal.
