Because this is our patronal feast, we will honor our great patron next weekend at all the Masses. We know of his love for the Lord, the Church and the poor. As we have done annually, there will be a second collection for the work of our St. Vincent de Paul Society. We have many requests for assistance with food, rent, utilities and medicine. Members of our St. Vincent de Paul Society often visit the homes of those persons requesting help to be of comfort to them and to assess their need. It was St. Vincent de Paul’s love for the poor that inspired Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, a lawyer and married man, to found the St. Vincent de Paul Society which is a world-wide organization serving the poor. An alcove of the church is dedicated to him with a stained glass window depicting this godly man wearing a top hat. Visit this alcove and say a little prayer thanking him for his good work and asking his prayers for our parish’s commitment to serve the poor. Parents may want to google “Blessed Ozanam” and in visiting the alcove with their children, tell them his story. ****** The 12:45 pm Sunday Mass returns next Sunday, September 30. This Mass will help lessen the attendance at the 11:00 am Mass, which is quite full. We want to avoid having people stand in the Gathering Space during Mass, other than parents with infants or toddlers. ****** Vincentfest is today! Come and spend an enjoyable afternoon with your fellow parishioners. There will be good food, entertainment and games for the children. ****** We keep in our prayers the women preparing for the Christ Renews His Parish retreat which is being held next weekend. The men’s weekend went very well. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Sunday, 12:00 pm—5:30 pm and Wednesday, 9:00 am—6:00 pm Our parish is privileged to have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Reservation Chapel. For information about Sunday Adoration, contact Julie Fox at 489-0111. Don’t forget Join us for Vincentfest on Sunday, 12:00 noon6:00 pm. Come out and enjoy delicious food, childrens’ games, entertainment and parish community!! If you are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, its teachings and traditions, please call Julia at 489-3537 ext. 208. ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY—SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Next weekend, September 29 and 30, our parish will be celebrating the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul, which is Thursday, September 27. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society will take up a second collection for those in need in our area. God bless you for helping these persons in their time of need. MISS VIRGINIA MISSION SUNDAY Please remember this ministry to the needy of the inner city next weekend, September 29/30. Bags of food or paper products may be left in the Gathering Space of the church. Whatever is collected is taken to Inner City Hope Mission House that very day, so please refrain from bringing items through the week. “Let us pray for these sons and daughters of St. Vincent’s as they prepare for their wedding day.” WEDDING BANNS III Brandt Carrol and Shardi Youngblutt II Joe Kerwin and Laura McCarthy I Alan Minne and Christina Gephart SCHOOL & YOUTH NEWS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS CATECHISTS STILL NEEDED!!! RE FALL SCHEDULE Sunday September 23 No RE (Vincentfest) September 30 RE Wednesday September 26 RE Preschool Sunday September 23 No Preschool (Vincentfest) September 30 Preschool 3 SCHOOL NEWS Following the long, very hot days of summer, students and staff began the new school year on a positive note. Now an entire month into school, NWEA testing is finished, teachers are organizing groups to meet specific student needs and generally we are settled into our Community in Christ. Our goals this year include emphasizing the Works of Mercy as we seek to expand our community beyond our school doors. In this Year of Faith proclaimed by Pope Benedict, we focus on the message heard last Sunday from the letter of James, “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith, but does not have works?” As happens every year, the Student Council chooses a service project on which the whole school works throughout the year. This year the project is across the ocean in Kenya, East Africa, where Sister M. Germaine of the Poor Handmaids became active in leading an orphanage 12 years ago called St. Joseph’s Caring Place. Sister Germaine, who is from Donaldson, Indiana, will visit our school on Tuesday, October 2, during our annual We Care Week to talk about her orphanage and the needs of the 75 young men it serves. Good things happen at St. Vincent de Paul School every day, and we are grateful for the opportunity we have to share in the spiritual growth of our students. We invite you to find out more about our school or visit us at any time to learn about our Community in Christ. EDGE GIRLS RETREAT What a fantastic weekend the Edge Girls' Retreat was! EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS’ TRAINING We are now accepting names of persons who would like to be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at the Sunday Liturgies or to the homebound. If you are interested in this liturgical ministry or can recommend someone, you may call the church office no later than Friday, October 5. All candidates for this ministry must be present for a training session; however, attendance at this meeting is by invitation only, so it is important that we have the names of potential candidates as soon as possible. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion must be registered members of the parish for at least six months, over age 16, a Catholic in good standing with the Church, and a person with a good reputation in the community. It is assumed, of course, that the candidate has a love for our Lord in the Eucharist and a desire to deepen this love through this beautiful ministry. We ask you to recommend a member of the parish, or you may submit your own name. BAPTISMAL PREPARATION CLASS Parents are required to attend two Baptismal Preparation Sessions before the baptism of their child. In Session I, a couple from the parish will talk about Catholic parenting and the importance of becoming involved in the parish. In Session II, Deacon Jim will walk through the Baptismal process and discuss the important role of Godparents. You may attend Session II before Session I, if necessary. Each session will begin at 7:00 pm. It is recommended that you attend before the birth of your child so there will be no delay in setting a date for the baptism once the baby is born. Godparents, too, are welcome. At least one parent and one godparent must be Catholic. Also, parents must be registered in the Parish. Please call the church office to sign up for your sessions (489-3537). Session I (East Meeting Room) - October 11 Session II (Church Conf. Room) - October 18 HELP US WELCOME THE DOMINICAN SISTERS! The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, are sending approximately 30 postulants and novitiates to St. Felix Monastery in Huntington to complete their degrees in education. To welcome them, St. Vincent's will be giving the Sisters a "Convent Warming" shower on Wednesday, September 26, at 7:00 pm in the Spiritual Center. All are welcome! Gift cards are most useful, as the sisters will have a variety of needs: Wal-Mart, Sam's, Hobby Lobby, Lowe's and local Catholic bookstores. Questions: Call Ann Gray 341-8953. REGISTERED TO VOTE? Registration at St. Vincents will be held next weekend, September 29/30. For more information contact Kathy Fisher at 637-1113. Don’t let others decide your future!
