September 2015 - Team Combustion 1912
Volume 6, Issue 2 September 2015 Slidell, Louisiana The Inferno Rushing to Competition Following a busy build season, we kicked off our competition season at the Georgia Southern Classic Regional. Following qualification matches, we were ranked 33rd. Although we did not advance to eliminations, we gained valuable experience. By the time the Bayou Regional started on March 19th, our competitive spirit was blazing brighter than ever. We’d revised our robot design, game strategy, and drive team for greater success. As a result, we ended up ranking 17th after qualifications matches. In eliminations, we were selected by Team 34 The Rockets and Team 2080 Torbotics to form the 7th seed alliance. We made it to the semifinals. While the team as a whole did not qualify for the World Championships, controls captain Ben R. qualified as a Dean’s List Award finalist. This award recognizes a student’s leadership ability, technical expertise and passion for FIRST. There, Ben R. waited anxiously with the other Finalists to find out who had filled one of the 10 coveted winners’ spots. “Sitting among the other Dean’s List Finalists in the time leading up to the ceremony was one of the most nerveracking times in my life,” recalls Ben. To thunderous applause, Ben was named a National Dean’s List Award Winner. Besides receiving a 10 lb. crystal lead trophy and other cool FIRST merch, Ben will visit Dean Kamen’s New Hampshire house later in the summer. With three Dean’s List Winners in four years and 7 finalists total, Team 1912 set a new record in all of FIRST. Additionally, the team will receive $1000 off next year’s registration. In addition to its 11 year old FRC Team, Team 1912 has its own VEX Robotics Team. Team 1912A Combustion had tremendous success at the 2014-2015 challenge, Skyrise. The team competed at three qualifiers in Louisiana and Mississippi, winning the robotics section of all 3 competitions with our robot Stacey. By carefully documenting our build season, we received the Excellence Award. At the state championship, we put forth our best efforts and placed second in the qualifying rounds. In eliminations, we paired up with Team Metal Revolution from Delhi Charter School. Our alliance reached the finals, where we ultimately lost to the Holy Cross alliance of Team Robotigers1 and Team Robotigers2. We had a great season and look forward to a bright future in VEX. 1912 in Summer-y Over the summer, we continued weekly meetings to improve older robots and prepare for the upcoming year. In June, we attended the Einstein Electric Institute Convention in New Orleans. Members spoke to heads of major energy corporations from across the country. We even met FIRST President Donald Bossi and joined a discussion panel. During NASA Week in July, we set up a booth at the Audubon Aquarium and shared FIRST with a total of 10,100 visitors from all around the world. Throughout the summer, we demoed our robots at local summer camps, as well as “Take Your Children to Work” Days.
