Dean’s Message
Dear Friends,
One of the benefits of the “Report to the Community”
is that it allows us to pause a moment and reflect on
the past year and recognize the accomplishments of our
dedicated faculty, staff and others with whom we work.
We can certainly be proud of our accomplishments. As
you read through these pages, you’ll see examples of
how our service-learning initiatives, our liberal arts
agenda and our community partnerships bring the
University of Wisconsin to Fond du Lac and the region.
Enrollments at UW-Fond du Lac continue to grow with 767 students registered for
the fall 2006 semester. This is an increase in enrollment of 50% over the past decade;
outstanding growth during an era of sharp budget cuts.

is building an effective infrastructure to help support the mission of the campus, while
continuing to develop scholarship funds to support students. The Foundation Board,
composed of community leaders and executives, has brought their experience, judgment and vision to the Board to serve the long term future of the campus as they work
to build endowments and relationships that ensure the longevity and accessibility to
UW-Fond du Lac in this community for the future.

Liberal Education Agenda
In collaboration with the Association of American Colleges and Universities
(AAC&U), Wisconsin has become a pilot state in the Liberal Education and
America’s Promise (LEAP) campaign to clarify and champion the value of a liberal education. UW-Fond du Lac is a campus action network partner in this initiative. The essential outcomes of a liberal education are for students to achieve
the following:
• Knowledge of human cultures and the natural world
• Intellectual and practical skills to include written and oral communication
• Personal and social responsibilities including civic engagement
• Integrative learning involving the adaptability to new situations and questions
The mission of UW-Fond du Lac encompasses these outcomes as the objectives
that we put forward to our students and our community.

The Best Start for Student Success
Supporting student success inside and outside of the classroom is a top priority at
UW-Fond du Lac. Statistics continue to show that our students are well prepared to
succeed when they transfer to a four year school or remain at UW-Fond du Lac as part
of a bachelor’s degree completion program.
Engaging Students in the First
Year (ESFY)
Bachelor’s Degree
Completion Programs
This is an increasingly popular
and important option for adult
students who may be place bound
by work or family obligations.
Schools and majors available
through UW-Fond du Lac include:
UW-Green Bay
Interdisciplinary Studies
UW-Oshkosh
Organizational Administration
UW-Milwaukee
Information Resources
Communications
Organizational Administration
with Business Minor
UW-Stevens Point
General Studies (two options)
UW-Superior
Elementary Education
Communications
Individualized Major
A unique three-day immersion course
has been developed for incoming first
year students. This course is offered
just prior to the beginning of the fall
semester and uses the classic novel
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley as the
common reading. Ten faculty and staff
are involved as teachers. Students have
the opportunity to work closely together
in the course and receive a challenging start to undergraduate studies and a
solid and successful transition from high
school to college.
Another important and active community relationship is the UW-Fond du Lac
mentorship program.
The campus partners with Big Brothers/
Big Sisters on a school based mentoring
program. A second program has UWFond du Lac students assisting in various
elementary schools as in-classroom
assistants to teachers. Finally, UW-Fond
du Lac students have the opportunity to
adopt a grandparent in partnership with
Woodlands Senior Park.
Study Abroad
In addition, the campus began offering
sections of LEC 100 (some linked with
another course, some stand-alone) to
help first-semester students make the
transition into college. The courses promote active learning, life management
skills, and engagement on campus in
small-class settings and are intended to
foster student success.
As part of the study abroad program, 42
students and community members traveled to Huatulco, Mexico, in March 2006.
This eight day and three credit learning
adventure combined exposure to the
Spanish language, study of the ecology
of the area, photographic and drawing
techniques for recording botanical information and an introduction to the culture
of southern Mexico.
Service-learning
The Liberal Arts Experience
In the past year, 152 UW-Fond du Lac
students completed 1,230 service hours
in the community.
UW-Fond du Lac believes strongly in
the foundations of a liberal arts education which prepares students to think, to
appreciate, to live, to serve and to lead.
Because of this, an important emphasis
is placed on lectures, performing arts,
visual arts, music, student activities and
athletics as part of the UW-Fond du Lac
experience.
Our campus is proud of ongoing servicelearning partnerships that are in place
with Woodlands Senior Park, the Boys
and Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters
of Fond du Lac, the Volunteer Center of
Fond du Lac County and many others.
Service-learning is different from volunteering and internships in that the service
is tied to course curriculum. Students get
the opportunity to practice skills learned
in the classroom in the “real world” and
the community benefits from having
needs met.
Last year, students in a geography course
taught elementary school students about
weather and climate. Students in a
history course worked with the local historical society on their Traveling Trunks
program. Students in a sociology course
interviewed older adults about the history of consumerism.
Performing Arts
There were numerous opportunities for
students to experience the arts in 2006,
either as a performer, behind-the-scenes
contributor or audience member. Admission to most of the performances is free
for UW-Fond du Lac students.
The theater department presented Last
Train to Nibroc and Brighton Beach
Memoirs in the Prairie Theater.
Mostly Mozart and the annual holiday
concert Messiah-sing were just two
examples of the many performances
offered by the music department.

UW-Fond du Lac’s music department
features a chorus, vocal jazz ensemble
and is the home to the Fond du Lac
Chamber Singers. The Collegiate Wind
Ensemble, a joint collaboration with students from Marian College, also performs
at the campus.
Visual Arts
A strong visual arts program at UW-Fond
du Lac in 2006 featured internationally
recognized artists exhibiting in the Visual
Arts Gallery.
Over $1,700 for student art scholarships
was raised by the newly created Art Students League at a cutting edge celebration of art called Art Momentum in May
2006 which received statewide attention.
This student run, student juried event
combined visual art, music, education and professional artistic growth. A
professional panel of nationally known
artists judged the student works and
awarded prizes.
Lecture Series
A lecture series showcasing faculty
research interests and areas of expertise
is ongoing. In 2006, the campus also
hosted Wisconsin Poet Laureate Denise
Sweet as part of the First Nation Series
which included poetry, music, history
and discussions of current political issues
facing Wisconsin area Indian nations.
Athletics
The athletic program at UW-Fond du Lac
offers something many universities can’t the chance to play immediately. In 2006,
the men’s soccer team was Wisconsin
Collegiate Conference (WCC) champ and
the golf team was runner up.
A group of UW-Fond du Lac
students participated in the Team
Trivia contest and fundraiser
sponsored by Fond du Lac Adult
Literacy Services. The event was
held in the University Center
Commons in February 2006.
At the spring 2006 awards banquet Dan
Spanbauer (Oshkosh West) and Amanda Saeger-Frei (Markesan) were named
student-athletes of the year.
Daryl Zupke (NFDL) and Amanda
Hernandez (Campbellsport) received
scholar-athlete of the year awards.
Getting into the “Zone…”
The Student Work Zone is a multi-functional
campus facility dedicated to the academic,
career exploration and wellness needs of
students. The Work Zone provides a wide
array of free, drop-in services to assist students
to succeed on campus. Approximately 413
students per month use the services provided.
For fall 2006, tutoring was provided for 22
courses and 148 students participated in
health screenings.
Academic Success Center - provides tutoring, workshops, and study groups
designed to enrich student life academically, culturally, and socially and to
ensure that students experience a nurturing learning environment while adjusting
to college life. Services are provided by experienced and qualified staff, including
student and faculty tutors.
“
The main reason I decided to
attend UW-Fond du Lac was
its affordability for the great
education I would receive.
Extracurricular activities and
the great professors, together,
have made my college experience very enjoyable. In total,
UW-Fond du Lac is the best
investment of my life.”
~ David Rebedew
Career Exploration Center - provides UW-Fond du Lac students the opportunity to find answers to questions like, “How can I find the major right for me and
the kind of life I want? What can I do with my major? How do I find that perfect
job? What do I do now and later to get me to the kind of career I want?”
Health and Wellness Services - The connection between mind, body, and spirit
is profound with each component supporting success or problems in the other.
It is difficult for students to be academically successful when they are stressed
out, over-committed, coping (or not) with personal or relationship problems, or
feeling sick. Staffed by health professionals, the Wellness Office provides quality
information, health screenings and the chance to meet with a counselor just to
talk when needed.

Engaging the Community
A strong partnership between UW-Fond du Lac and the local community is beneficial to both.
UW-Fond du Lac is committed to being an academic and cultural resource for local residents.

Prairie Fest
The fourth annual Prairie Fest, an
educational event held the last
Saturday in July, attracted over 300
people in 2006.The Fest included
a walk/run event in the morning,
prairie tours throughout the day, a
plant sale, numerous presentations
and entertainment and food. Prairie
Fest 2007 is scheduled for July 28,
and the community is invited to
attend.
Gottfried Arboretum
The Gottfried Arboretum at UWFond du Lac continued to prosper
in 2006. New trails were added and
signage was updated throughout
the 37 acre prairie restoration
project.
UW-Fond du Lac, in partnership
with the Gottfried Arboretum, is in
the process of adding a series of
trails through the entire campus
which will provide hiking and
biking opportunities to the community. Completion of the trails is
scheduled for the summer of 2008.
Through grants from the Natural
Resources Foundation and We
Energies, the Arboretum staff produced four programs to educate
the community on native plants.
These programs were presented to
various organizations in the Fond
du Lac community, and will continue to be available on request.
Cultural and Academic
Enrichment
The 2006 Performing Arts Series included
the internationally touring Core Ensemble
presenting Ain’t I a Woman in celebration of Black History Month and a trio of
musicians from the Milwaukee Symphony
Orchestra providing a beautiful evening of
chamber music.
Several theater department and music
department performances rounded out
the season.
The cost for the public to attend events
in the series is affordable thanks to the
sponsors - CitizensFirst Credit Union,
UW-Fond du Lac Foundation and UWFond du Lac Student Life and Interest
Committee.
The expertise of our professors and invited speakers was shared with the community through a wide variety of lectures on
topics such as Savant Syndrome, working
with Geographic Information Systems,
medical ethics and much more.
Continuing Education
The UW-Fond du Lac Continuing
Education program is one of the largest
and strongest in the state. During the past
year, 3,279 adults and youth in the area
have taken advantage of a wide range of
programs.
Continuing Education hosts several conferences and specialized programs including the ever-popular College for Kids and
LEAPS! summer youth programs.
In collaboration with the FVHCA (Fox
Valley Health Care Alliance), Continuing
Education was the recipient of a $26,500
Program Innovation Fund grant from the
UW-Extension and UW Colleges. The
HEY! (Healthcare Exploration for Youth)
project will create an interactive website
designed especially for middle school students to pique their interest in careers in
the healthcare professions.
For the second year, UW-Fond du Lac
Continuing Education, in collaboration
with numerous community partners,
hosted a Girls+Math+Science=
The Girls+Math+Science=Opportunities
conference offered area middle school girls
the opportunity to explore career options in
math and science.
Opportunities conference attended by 216
middle school girls in November 2006.
This was an increase of 54% over the
attendance the previous year.
The conference was a collaboration
between UW-Fond du Lac Continuing
Education and local community organizations including Aurora Health Care,
Fond du Lac Area Foundation, Northeast
Wisconsin Area Health Education Center,
St. Agnes Hospital Foundation, AAUW
American Association of University
Women, Fond du Lac Public Library,
Girl Scouts of Manitou Council, Mercury
Marine, Moraine Park Technical College,
and UW-Extension 4-H.
Community Connections
This campus continues to be a resource
for our community in many ways. During
2006, health seminars, employee training,
a scholarship pageant, fish boils and a
cross country meet were just a few of the
events held at the campus.
The University Center Commons is a
popular setting for fundraisers. Fond
du Lac Adult Literacy, Big Brothers/Big
Sisters, Service League, the Gottfried
Arboretum Committee and many other
organizations hosted their events at the
campus generating much needed funds
for a wide range of community needs.
Many area businesses take advantage of
the state-of-the-art campus facilities available including the Commons, computer
labs, Large Group Instruction Room,
Prairie Theater and more.

Alumni Connections
Distinguished
Alumni Award
What do you get when you take eight UW-Fond du Lac Alumni and put them in a room
to create the UW-Fond du Lac Alumni Association board of directors? FUN!
Since the campus first opened in 1968, nearly 20,000 Fond du Lac area community members have attended UW-Fond du Lac for at least one semester. They are all considered
alumni of the campus.
Many UW-Fond du Lac alumni do not consider themselves alumni of the campus.
Although, most have told me that the experience they had while attending UW-Fond du
Lac really helped prepare them for the remainder of their academic career.
When I talk to alumni I hear about the professor that helped guide them in making a
successful career decision, or the time they spent playing ball for Coach Knar, or how
wonderful it was to start at UW-Fond du Lac.
The UW-Fond du Lac Alumni Association was established in 2004 to provide a channel of communication between the campus and its alumni. Specifically, the Alumni
Association is actively involved in planning activities that give the alumni an opportunity
to reconnect with the campus.
In 2006, the Alumni Association jointly hosted an alumni basketball and recognition
event with the campus athletic department and coordinated a trip to the Timber Rattlers
game in August. Planned thus far for 2007 are a basketball game featuring campus alumni in early 2007 and the annual Distinguished Alumni award reception in May.
Even though these exciting events offer alumni the opportunity to reconnect with
their fellow classmates and the campus, it is difficult to reach all alumni. The Alumni
Association is working on the creation of on-going communication channels through
newsletters and the campus web site.
If you are an alumnus of UW-Fond du Lac, consider joining the fun by contacting me at
(920) 929-7657 or [email protected]. I look forward to hearing your alumni story!
Sincerely,
Christa Williams

UW-Fond du Lac Foundation
As a non-profit organization, governed by a board of directors that includes community
leaders representing business, education, government, healthcare and alumni, the UWFond du Lac Foundation plays a critical role in connecting the campus and community.
We no longer want UW-Fond du Lac to be the best kept secret in higher education.
Instead, we want to share with the community the good work the campus does and
encourage the community’s ongoing support for its mission.
As volunteer board members and staff of the UW-Fond du Lac Foundation, we are
excited and challenged by the task of helping support campus initiatives that would not
otherwise be possible without private donations. In an era of shrinking state support,
the Foundation plays an important role in providing scholarships that help make higher
education accessible and affordable for all, while supporting programs and projects that
strengthen the University.
In 2006, the Foundation took on an increased role in supporting events and programming that engages the University with the community. Generous gifts from private
donors support the important work of the Foundation by providing scholarships, grants
to faculty and staff, sponsorship of campus events, and an endowment fund that positions the campus to take advantage of opportunities and initiatives that better serves our
students and the Fond du Lac area.
The people who attend UW-Fond du Lac are our friends and neighbors.
As one of those business leaders and alumni of UW-Fond du Lac, I hope you will join
me in making a gift that sustains and supports the excellent educational and cultural
opportunities available on the campus.

With a Caring Heart… Helping Others
“She had an excellent mind, a radiant smile, a caring heart and made great
German chocolate cake” is how Joyce Joanne Heiden is described by her
mother. Joyce understood the importance of education and the value of pursuing goals. At the age of 58, after a five-year battle with cancer, Joyce Joanne
Heiden died. In 2003, Dr. Joan Regan, Joyce’s mother, created the Joyce Joanne
Heiden Scholarship for Single Mothers to honor her daughter and help women
of similar circumstance pursue their educational dreams and be shining examples to their children.

Spirit of Excellence Award
2006 Recipients
Harold “Danny” and Charmaine LaShay
The Spirit of Excellence Award is presented by the UW-Fond du Lac
Foundation for exceptional commitment to making UW-Fond du Lac
an excellent learning institution.
The first Spirit of Excellence Award was presented to Harold “Danny”
and Charmaine LaShay during the fall donor and scholarship reception
for their dedication and sustained support to UW-Fond du Lac. The
LaShay’s have annually sponsored a scholarship since 1986 and have
contributed more than 25 years of volunteer service to UW-Fond du
Lac and UW-Fond du Lac Foundation.
When the five-member Fond du Lac Citizens’ Committee met with the
Coordinating Committee for Higher of Wisconsin (CCHE) in January
of 1966 to discuss the establishment of a university-affiliated campus
in Fond du Lac, Danny LaShay was one of the five. He was actively
involved in making UW-Fond du Lac a reality from that point on.
Charmaine LaShay; Christa Williams (center), UWFond du Lac Foundation Executive Director and
Harold “Danny” LaShay at the 2006 Scholarship
reception where the LaShays were honored with the
Spirit of Excellence Award.
With a mission and purpose of providing high quality education at a low cost to qualified students of the greater Fond du Lac
area, UW-Fond du Lac opened its doors in the fall of 1968. The original mission and purpose of the campus still holds true
today.
The involvement and commitment of Mr. LaShay to UW-Fond du Lac did not end with the opening of the campus. In fact, he is
a founding member of the UW-Fond du Lac Foundation board of directors, serving approximately 25 years.
As a gift to his wife in 1986, Danny began the Charmaine L. LaShay Music Scholarship at UW-Fond du Lac and they have been
donating annually to that scholarship for 20 years.
A consistent theme permeates their life story; commitment, family, service and community. It was our honor to recognize Danny
and Charmaine for these wonderful values. We remain grateful for their ongoing commitment to excellence at UW-Fond du Lac.
Scholarships…
the foundation of support for UW-Fond du Lac students
Each year, UW-Fond du Lac Foundation awards scholarships to deserving students. We are thankful for the many
generous gifts received each year that make these scholarships possible. If you would like to find out how to create,
or support an existing UW-Fond du Lac scholarship, contact the UW-Fond du Lac Foundation office at (920) 929-7657

Every gift makes a difference at

It is through the support of the

Lac Foundation makes a difference by providing scholarships,
awarding grants for professional
development to faculty and staff,
sponsoring educational and
cultural events for the entire
community to enjoy and supporting campus initiatives that would
not otherwise be possible.
