We are proud that BCoT is in the top 5% of colleges in
the country. Ofsted has judged us as a good college
with outstanding features and we are working hard to be
outstanding in all areas.

e offer a clear route to
university through a
programme of BTEC Level 3
Extended Diploma courses which
are equivalent to studying 3 A
Levels and we are now introducing
A Levels in English, Maths and
Biology to run alongside the BTEC
programmes.
Around 50% of our Level 3
students look to progress to
degree courses at university, with
past students gaining places at
universities such as Brunel, Leeds
and Liverpool St John Moores.
At BCoT our lecturers are
industry trained and bring
knowledge, experience and
enthusiasm for their subject to the
classroom. They are experts in
their chosen field and retain good
links with their industry contacts
giving rise to many opportunities
for practical work experiences.
As much as we’re proud of our

classroom and so we offer a range
of enrichment activities throughout
the year including charity events
and trips abroad.

It doesn’t matter where you start your college life at BCoT, we encourage all students to
work towards achieving university level qualifications. So whether you are studying at Level
1, 2 or 3 we will set the expectation that you will progress to the next level, with the potential
to study at degree level.
Your Route to University
A BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is a recognised route to a university degree course.
The equivalent to three A Levels, BTECs will attract the same UCAS points as the
equivalent A Level result and are therefore accepted for university entry; for example,
a triple Distinction BTEC attracts 360 UCAS points, the same as three A grades at A
Level. As well as points value, BTEC courses are also designed to give you the useful
skills that studying towards a degree will require, such as time management and
research skills.

At BCoT we expect all students to attain a Level 2 standard (GCSE grade C) in English and
Maths. If you have a D grade, you will be expected to retake your GCSE in the appropriate
subject; if you have an E grade or lower, we will ask you to take Functional Skills as a
stepping stone towards achieving your GCSE. We are committed to the success of our
learners and will give you the support required to achieve these essential life skills.

he 5:1 Teaching Model Bite sized learning
A
t BCoT we teach to a 5:1 model where learning is split into bite sized
sessions of six weeks long.
Students follow five weeks of teaching, learning and assessment and then one week
of Review and Development, known as RAD Week. This means you can see your
progress as you complete one module in full, before moving on to the next.
Benefits of the 5:1 Model
Simple structure to your college work - you concentrate on one unit at a time
and can really focus on what you are learning.
Allows you to measure your progress - you will complete a unit every
six weeks.
Avoids lots of deadlines at the end of the year - you complete assessments
for each unit as you go along.
Allows you to understand what you’re studying and when - this puts you
in control of your learning.
Allows you to improve and be more successful - you will have the
opportunity to go back and improve your grade in any units you’ve already completed.

from our training restaurant and hair
and beauty salons, to our recording studios
and automotive garage. Many of our
facilities are open to the public, providing
hands-on work experience for the students
as part of their course.
The Restaurant at BCoT
The modern training restaurant and kitchen
provide the opportunity for students to
showcase their cookery and practise front
of house skills. Hospitality and catering
students prepare, cook and serve dishes to the public
on a day-to-day basis as an integral part of their course.

Recording Studio and
Mac Suites
Our extensive music and media facilities offer a range
of Mac and ICT suites, and recording studios. The
facilities give our music and media students the
opportunity to write, produce, record and mix tracks
to a professional standard.

BCoT has its own on-site gym which is fully equipped
with the latest in Technogym equipment.
Through local partnerships, BCoT students have
access to a multi-million pound sports complex with
swimming pool, athletics track, football pitches and

salons which are open to the public. Industry trained
lecturers are on hand and students learn their skills in a

At BCoT our staff are industry trained and have strong links with local businesses and
national organisations.
We work with a wide range of local and national employers, organising work experience,
guest lecturers and visits. This ensures that students are trained to industry standards and
prepared for their first job or a place at university.

links with employers; Building and Construction
students benefit from close links with multinational
organisations such as Kier and Fosters who look
to BCoT for new apprentices. Engineering work in

students who successfully complete full time courses.
Wherever possible, guest speakers from industry are
invited to talk to students about latest technology, new
ways of working and career opportunities.

Work Experience
As a BCoT student you are likely to undertake work
placements as part of your course. This gives you the

The Enterprise Passport is a way to boost students’
employability skills and enhance their profile with
employers. There is a wide range of interesting activities
available, such as volunteering and work placements.
As well as providing work experience, these activities will
greatly enhance a student’s CV.

asingstoke has excellent bus and train services and both bus and train stations
are within walking distance of the College.
The College offers discounted travel packages to our full-time students. Students who live outside
Basingstoke and travel to and from the College by train can receive up to 55% off their rail fare and
can pay monthly, termly or annually. Our partnership with Stagecoach means that students travelling
to the College by bus from outside of the centre of Basingstoke in Zone 2 areas may also qualify for
up to 25% off bus travel.

At Black Dam roundabout take the
first exit, joining the A30 Ringway
South. After one mile, go straight
over roundabout, staying on the
Ringway. After a mile, at Winchester
Road roundabout, take the second
exit, joining Ringway West. Very

ECOBCoT is our campaign name for the many initiatives we have
launched to help reduce waste, promote environmental issues and
support sustainability.

Study A Levels alongside
Advanced Vocational Courses
A
pplicants who are offered a
Level 3 Extended Diploma and
intend to go on to university have the
opportunity to study an A Level in
English, Maths or Biology in addition
to their Diploma.
This offer is conditional upon the
applicant achieving grade A* or A at
GCSE in their selected A Level subject
and having achieved at least GCSE
grade C in English and Maths.
This Advanced Vocational Study
Programme will allow talented
students to study a skills-based,
hands-on vocational qualification
alongside an integral academic subject.
The A Level subject will be studied
over two years. Level 3 Extended
Diplomas are equivalent to three
A Levels meaning that, upon
completion of an additional A Level,
a student will leave with qualifications
equivalent to four A Levels.
As a College we are committed to looking after the environment. In 2013, BCoT saw the largest solar installation in
Basingstoke when over £160,000 worth of solar panels were installed on the roofs of the main south site building
and the Technology building. The panels will reduce energy bills and after eight years will pay for themselves.
Planet Friendly Printing
BCoT is committed to sustainability and aims to print all of its marketing
materials on paper from sustainable sources where possible. We look
to carbon off-set any printed material we produce. We also recycle
any unused or out of date publications.
The carbon used to make
this prospectus is about the
same as it takes to make 5
plastic bags.
Environmentally Friendly
As part of our green agenda, beehives have been installed at BCoT to enable us to produce our own honey for
use by the hospitality and catering students in The Restaurant or sell in Aspiral, our shop. Some of our staff are
currently training to become beekeepers and plan to get students involved in the project too.

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes for anyone aged 16 or over. As an
apprentice you earn a salary whilst training towards a recognised qualification. BCoT will
support you in finding an Apprenticeship position with an employer.

You will benefit from working in a modern, fully
equipped nursery with purpose built training room and

Trips and activities
An annual French exchange trip is usually organised
with a college in Alençon, which is twinned with
Basingstoke. Previous students have attended the
Health, Social Care and Childcare Conference in
Paris, and a team building event at Itchen Valley
Country Park.
Working with employers
You will work in local schools, nurseries and special
needs settings; work experience is an integral part of
the course.
Guest speakers include Camp America

Course Overview:
This qualification is designed to help you understand
what it means to work in the early years or health and
social care sectors. The course involves a lot of practical
work helping you to develop your employability and
communication skills, teamwork, time management
and creativity.
Course Overview:
This qualification is intended to prepare you to become
an Early Years Educator, enabling you to work with
children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of
children aged 5 to 7 years. Upon achievement of this
qualification, you will be able to enter the workforce
or access Higher Education; it is anticipated that
this qualification will attract up to 280 UCAS points,
equivalent to two A Levels. The course has a mandatory
750 hours of work experience within a range of childcare
and educational settings, to complement the knowledge
and skills you will learn at College.
Your learning will centre around four main themes: Health
and well-being; Legislation, frameworks and professional
practice; Play, development and learning for school
readiness; Professional development.

and Beauty Competition at The Anvil in
Basingstoke - a great chance for students to
showcase their skills and creativity.

nimal management involves the
care, handling, health, welfare and
accommodation of animals. BCoT has
invested in new indoor and outdoor
facilities and boasts impressive rainforest
and aquatic displays.
You will benefit from the new Animal Discovery
Centre with the Exotic Discovery room, Mammal
Discovery room, Aquatic Discovery room and
large rainforest and marine aquarium zoo exhibits.

in a modern teaching environment.
You will benefit from state-of-the-art laboratories
with forensic science equipment including
finger printing equipment and forgery detection
apparatus. There is also an electrostatic lifter for
analysing shoe prints, alternative energy kits for
testing sustainability, and extensive microbiological
facilities including aseptic work spaces and cultures
and fermentation equipment.
Trips have been organised to the Science
Museum, Winchester Crown Courts and

CoT has invested in a purpose
built garage workshop. As well as
practise vehicles, students can work on
customer vehicles from College staff,
which gives them the opportunity to work
on real projects. The College also runs a
successful racing team, offering experience
to students who study motorsports.
You will benefit from a modern, fully equipped
vehicle workshop with an extensive range of industry
standard Snap-on diagnostic equipment and a fleet
of modern vehicles for students to work on.
If you study Motorsport you will work on a Toyota MR2
race car and be part of a team participating in around
seven race meetings a season.
The College provides motorsports students with
practise cars, a BMW and 2CV, used for test days.
There is an annual trip to the Autosports Show at
the NEC and Motorsport students participate in
race and test days at circuits around the country.
Trips have been organised to the Mini factory
at Cowley, where students see cars being built
from scratch, and to Pro-Drive, who manufacture
modified engine components for racing cars.

Group to provide a direct route into

Work experience is undertaken with employers
who are often looking to recruit students when
