Reuss (sub requested) August 2, 2015 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life. - John 6:27a FROM THE PASTOR: A LEISURELY WALK - For the next four weeks, the whole church concentrates on a single chapter of John’s gospel. Its subject is Jesus, the Bread of Life. It’s rare in the liturgical calendar to provide such a prolonged emphasis, but our intense focus is a matter of importance to our lives as Catholic Christians. We gather weekly around this table of our Eucharist, hoping to discover ever more deeply its meaning. In John chapter six, we’re exploring the great mystery of what calls us here: What is the purpose of assembling each Sunday to confess our failures, listen to God’s word, ask for what we need, give praise and thanks, and receive the gift of Christ-life in the forms of bread and wine? If we spend a lifetime performing these actions on autopilot, without reflection, our liturgical life can devolve into a spiritual wasteland. Mass isn’t, as composer and retreat leader Tom Kendzia says, a matter of get-Jesus-on-your-tongue and leave. But if not that, then what? - Alice Camille WHAT DO DISCIPLES OF CHRIST DO - in response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found a constitutional right for same-sex marriage? What do we do? Fourth, we have entered a time of intense prayer and fasting. We are engaged in spiritual warfare. St. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 10:3-6, “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” FIfth, we need to be engaged in the “ polis,” that is, in politics. Mixing “religion” and “politics” is verboten to many. But, “politics” means “organizing our common life.” In a constitutional republic, everyone has a voice and the right to share their insights, knowledge, experience and opinions. People of faith are included in that number. That some of our points of view are informed by our Catholic faith does not invalidate them anymore than an atheist’s point of view in invalidated by his unbelief. I will elaborate this point in further bulletins. AGNES UTILIZE SOCIAL MEDIA We're looking for some social media savvy people as well as digital photographers to help spread the Good News. If interested, contact Sherri Kopko [email protected] or Mary Williams at [email protected]. FRUITS OF EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Vocational Fruits: Here too, young people can discover their calling and find the strength to say “yes.” Seminary figures indicate that parishes with perpetual adoration are actually producing more vocations than parishes without such. If we want young people to come to Church out of conviction, we need to bring them to the Blessed Sacrament, where the radiance of Christ’s love can melt their hearts. Pope Saint John Paul II wrote: “I urge priests, religious, and lay people to continue to redouble their effort to teach the younger generations the meaning and value of Eucharistic adoration and devotion. How will young people be able to know the Lord if they are not introduced to the mystery of His presence?” Excerpt from Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration by Fr. Donald Arsenault REASONS PEOPLE DON’T GO TO CHURCH The Church is full of hypocrites: Yes, it is, and as our Protestant brothers and sisters say: “There’s always room for one more!” A family is only as good as its best members, and is as bad as its worst members. A parish family is no different. Are we not up to snuff? Not quality people enough for you? Come! Make us better! That’s a huge part of belonging to the Body of Christ – we are a group of broken, messed up people whom God makes better, and who make each other better. We could use your help. QUOTES - I always think that the best way to know God is to love many things. - Vincent van Gogh GROANERS - When the man who wrote the song, “Hokey Pokey” died, the undertakers had trouble keeping the body in the casket. They put his left leg in and…well, you know the rest. MASS ATTENDANCE FOR JULY 18/19 – 857; MASS ATTENDANCE FOR JULY 25/26 – 920. THOUGHTS ON GIVING: “Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not.” - Exodus 16:4 When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same way today, God calls us to be content with a fair portion and to be willing to share the rest. 2 PARISH news Bazaar is August 7, 8 and 9!
