Maintenance and Services (cont`d)
Greetings
I
t is my pleasure and privilege to pass along
holiday greetings for the first time to all
employees. We are completing a year that has
brought success on many fronts and I believe
we are poised for more good fortune in
and beyond.
Admittedly, this year was not without its
challenges for some of our employees who
were impacted by the smelter closure in
June. We did our best to mitigate this action
and have done much to help those who
were affected. Most importantly, we continue
making significant investments in both the
Flin Flon and Snow Lake camps to help secure the long-term
sustainability of our operations for years to come. In turn, these
investments will provide exciting employment opportunities for
the region's residents.
The decision to proceed with the full development of Lalor
has reintroduced a significant element of growth into the HudBay
story. Investment in the 777 North expansion, advancement of
the Reed Lake, Cold and Lost deposits and a commitment to
intense exploration are all examples of the vitality of our business.
We are committed to optimizing our operations in Northern
Manitoba and this will remain a key cornerstone of our growth
strategy in 2011 and beyond.
One of our most notable accomplishments in 2010 is our
continued record of strong safety performance across our operations. Maintaining high levels of safety helps protect our most
valuable asset at HudBay - our people . Our commitment to
safety is unwavering and during each visit to our operations I will
ensure it remains a priority.
Thank you for your continued commitment and dedication to
our collective success. I wish you a safe holiday season spent with
friends and family and continued success and prosperity in 2011 .

A
nother year has come and gone
again. Things seem to be moving
very fast this year with lots of changes
at Trout Lake.
We have seen so many manpower changes over this past year.
With so many retirements and transfers , people coming and going, it is
tough trying to remember who has
gone where.
We wished long and happy retirements to Art Hughes, Arnie Lundquist,
Dave Roberts , Lyle Misfeldt, Brett
Davie, AI Hynes, Jim Gudbranson,
John Hrechka, Dave Edwards, Larry
Garrioch, Geoff Stuckless, Chuck

We saw changes to some crews
when some retirements happened; it
was like a complete change in the tire
shop as Gary Fisher moved up there
to join them, and Lyle King moved to
the shaft crew to replace Chuck who
retired.
Soon enough there will be more
manpower changes with North Ramp
Mine manning up , we will be losing
a few more faces that have been
around Trout Lake for quite some
time, and there are more folks that
are going to retire coming up as well.
We wish you all the best in your new
endeavors when they happen.

Chisel North Mine and Snow Lake Mill
Pam Wiwcharuk
ack again for another year, with
B
a lot of activity in the Snow Lake
Operations in the later part of this
year. As most of you know, 2009
was a difficult year for us with Chisel
North being placed on care & maintenance beginning in February and the
Snow Lake Mill in July. It all began
to get back to normal in November,
2009 with Chisel North starting up
again and our people and equipment
being transferred back home. The
Snow Lake Mill resumed operations
in March, 2010. During the transition,
we did lose a couple of employees
who chose to take permanent transfers and remain in Flin Flon, Freddy
& Julie Slippers, Lisa Tower, Dan
Armstrong and Eldon Seymore.
Since operations resumed, the
Snow Lake Mill while continuing with
daily milling have been repairing and
refurbishing equipment and structural
areas that were in bad need of repair.
Planning and preparations for the
future are on-going with the Lalor
Project going forward.
Snow Lake Mill welcomes back
all former employees transferring
back and also welcomes several new

Mines Technical Services
M
ines Technical Services saw
some big changes in its personnel roster this year. Rob Carter moved
into the role of Superintendent Mines
Technical Services after Kim Proctor
transferred to the main office as the
new Lalor Project Manager. Paolo
Strapazzon also left our department
to join the Lalor group in the main
office. We wish everybody great success in their new roles.
Spencer Martin received his
20-YearnoLTAaward. Congratulations
Spencer! Our group was represented
at this year's local science fairs when
Travis Rideout and Paolo Strapazzon
helped out with the judging.
Brian Hartman organized some
new field work for a returning
University of Wisconsin student from
last year's field trip. The work is ongoing and hopefully will foster new
ideas in VMS exploration . Brian also
volunteered many hours researching and recommending equipment
and consumables for the upcoming
Northern Manitoba Mining Academy's
rock and mineral processing lab.
That's about all the news for
this year. We 're all looking forward
to another productive year ahead.
Wishing everyone a joyous holiday
season from the Mines Technical
Services group!

and Darcy Tower. The Smelter shutdown has resulted in a number of
personnel changes. The Mill welcomes in no particular order: David
Van Caseele, Travis Peterson, Isaac
Peters, Blair Brooks, Dean Madarash,
Scott Eastman, Tony Flynn, Brittany
Jones, Darcy Salamondra, Grant
Norman, Chris Durand, Todd Stevens,

on to greener pastures. We wish them
all the best and hope to see them at
the retirement party.

received 30 year safety awards and
Allan Hill received his 40 year safety

The year 2010 was a very busy
time in the Mill with the two projects
being started and all the training of
the new employees. Major projects
this year included the completion of
the new lime plant, and the new copper concentrate filter plant that was
built to coincide with the closure of
the smelter. The plant uses a Larox
pressure filter and can produce the
low moistures required for concentrate shipping.
Commissioning of the new plant
began in June. Over the course of the
next few months it was ramped up to
full production and by September the
old plant was phased out.
We wish everyone a successful
2011 and all the best to you.

Smelter
Cindy Jorgensen
A
s you all know, the Smelter had
its last cast on June 11 so this will
be our final article for the Northern
Lights. The Smelter has been a faithful contributor to the magazine over
the years, and we 'd like to thank
everyone who participated.
Numerous employees took the
retirement packages offered as a result
of Smelter closure and they are as follows: Ron Baschuk, Orul Bilec, Guy
Bishop, Ron Blatz, Dave Bolton, Larry
Brading, Patti Carriere, Earl Crouse,
AI Davis, Sharon Gibney, Dennis
Herzberg, John Hinks, Allan Keller,
John Laidlaw, Vuong Le, Lawrence
Mandes, Bob O 'Connell, Max Owen,
Harvie Perkins, Hugh Quinn, Andy
Sawka, Euclide St Germain, Brad
Stevens and Bill Williamson. Cory
Slater left HBM&S for other employment. Best of luck to all.
Most of the remaining staff and
hourly employees settled into their
new departments by the end of June .
A small crew was left for decommissioning and clean-up through the summer and into September. The only
areas of the Smelter that will remain
intact are Feed Prep (which has now
become Concentrate Handling) and
the Track & Train crews; these areas
will move to the CSG dept.
Our Smelter meeting room I
warehouse building and office are
now being used by IT as a training
centre, and 777 North Mine has
moved into our maintenance trailers
and shop. There was lots of activity
this summer as the portal for 777
North was prepared near the north
end of the slag tunnel. The stack has
been inspected and capped, and will
remain standing, while other areas of
the smelter have been cleaned and
prepared for future demolition.
The Smelter Rec Club held its final
golf tournament in June, with a very
good turn out. Darcy Salamondra was
the winner but there were plenty of
prizes for all. The remaining Rec Club
funds were donated to Liston Chaisson.
We had some 25 year watch
recipients this year and they are
Rob Larocque, Doug Lyon , Guy
Henderson, Doug Slugoski and Scott
Anderson. Ron Blatz and Craig
Simpson both received their 30 year
Safety Awards. Congratulations to all!
So, after 80 years of operation, the end is here. Best of luck to
everyone in your new endeavors and
a heartfelt thank you for your efforts
in making the Smelter the great place
to work that it was. Have a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A
s we look back at an awesome
2010, only one word can be used
to describe it - busy!
Lynda Eagle finished the year up
right with a well-deserved retirement
holiday with her family at Walt Disney
World. Her grandchildren, Brandt,
Tyler, Kalen and Linden have voted
her "Best Grandma" in the world.
November found Sandra and AI
Chatfield heading to Punta Cana not
just for the warm weather, but for
the wedding of their oldest daughter Cassandra to Robert Feltham on
November 9, 2009. Family and friends
that were able to attend also enjoyed
the relaxation and great weather.
Since last year, we have had a few
staffing changes in our department. A
big welcome to Chelsey Lindsey, who
joined our department in November,
2009. As well, welcome aboard to
Moe Ricard, Wade Andrusiak and
Darcy Janzen. We're very happy to
have all of you with us.
Home was calling Sandra Chatfield
in January where she visited with
family and friends.
As the cold months of winter
closed in on us , Wade Andrusiak
headed to Puerto Vallarta for some
fun in the sun. Linda Connolly and
two of her sisters decided to "beat
the winter blues" and chose Cuba for
their sunny destination to celebrate
Linda's birthday. No snow and sandals and shorts - why would anyone
want to stay home?
In March, Ralph and Roberta
(MacKinnon) Bouvier planned a trip
to Arizona with longtime friends
Arnie and Sally Stephansson. The
perfect get-away but what? SNOW
in Arizona - in March? Who would
have thought it - we had to wear all
the clothes we brought - every day
for the first week just to stay warm!
We hope Onalee and Steve Stelmach
had better weather in Yuma, Arizona
on their winter retirement.
Roberta celebrated her 60th
birthday in May. She and Ralph
surprised everyone at her "surprise"
birthday by getting married. Yahoo!
Congratulations to Colleen Gidney
who also reached a milestone birthday this year when she turned 50 and
was surprised by family and friends
with a surprise party at the Rotary
Hub. Lori Bada also had a special
birthday this year when she turned
40 and was surprised by a birthday
celebration a day before her birthday.
So many cakes - so little time - way
to go birthday girls!
Geri and Cal Walter had a welcome visit in Mary when two of Geri's
sisters, Ruth Cipak and Maria Stockley,
arrived from Nova Scotia. Never having been "this far north," they were
amazed at our long days and short
nights - at least in the summer!
Then came June and graduation.
Congratulations to Clara Karcha's
son Travis upon his graduation from
Many Faces. Mom and Dad are very
proud of you!
Sharon Lindsey (Mill - formerly Department 80), Chelsey Lindsey
(Department 80), Phyllis Mackenzie (retired Department 80) attending Alison (MacKenzie) and Michael Desjarlais 's wedding, September
4, 2010. Three generations of Department 80!
Congratulations to Samantha
Breedon, daughter of Gwen and Ron
Breedon, on her graduation from
Hapnot Collegiate. She is now attending Brandon University, studying education and majoring in history. Way to
go Sam!
Sharon Martin made her way
east this year where she visited many
family and friends in Newfoundland.
Hard to stay away from that call of
the ocean!
Ron and Gwen Breedon gained
themselves a daughter-in-law on
September 4, 2010 when son Michael
Dejarlais married Alison MacKenzie,
daughter of Rick and Debbie MacKenzie. We all wish you both many
years of health and happiness together!
Wade Andrusiak enjoyed travelling to BC and visiting with his son
Scott Levandosky and grandchildren
Shaylynn and Quinn in Calgary. What
a great way to end the summer!
Congratulations go out to Darcy
and Joy Janzen on the birth of
their daughter Robyn Danielle on
September 17. Tiny but healthy!
It doesn 't seem to matter if we
travel far or just go camping close
to home. The most important thing
is the friends and family we see and
spend our time with.
In closing, all of us here in
Department 80 would like to wish
our co-workers, family and friends a
very Merry Christmas and all the best
in 2011.

time with an old friend Harold Brown
(from Plant Engineering). They toured
New Brunswick, exploring the famed
Tidal Basins of the Bay of Fundy, the
few remaining covered bridges, some
challenging golf courses and of course
catching up on old times. Bob then
took the Confederation Bridge over
to PEl, the land of red soil, wind swept
dunes of Cavendish Beach and Anne
of Green Gables. He then braved the
seas on a ferry over to Cape Breton
Island where he sampled some scotch
at Canada's only scotch distillery at
Glenora, then over to Ingonish to
spend a day lobster fishing. Seafood,
seafood, seafood was the order of
the day - every day! Bob's daughter
Candace also graduated this summer
and is off to U of M in the fall. To use
up the rest of his holidays, Bob went
west to Lethbridge, Alberta and the
Craw's Nest Pass where he spent a
week camping and hiking the mountain trails in and around Frank's slide.
Allan Broughton's step daughter
Katherine Lane graduated this June
from Bishop James Mahoney High
School. Kat graduated on her 18th
birthday. After the graduation service
and supper, a social was held where
Allan and Katherine enjoyed the 1st
dance. Kat had the 2nd dance with
her escort Nathan before the power
went out due to the storm outside. It
was an early night for all except the
grads.

HBED
A
nother busy year at the exploration department. Our exploration
activities at Lalor Lake have started
to wind down as the deposit's development begins. New and exciting
projects have arisen and HBED is
jointly working on the Reed Lake and
Lost/Cold Lake Deposits with VMS
and Halo Resources. Work continues
in the Flin Flon/ Creighton area to
test potential geophysical and seismic targets. Staff and contractors
of HBED also had some changes in
their personal lives as we 've received
some new additions to our family and
will sadly be saying goodbye to some
other valued members of the team.
Holly Leyland (HBED) and Derek
Smyth (HBED) of Snow Lake celebrated the arrival of their first baby
boy Aiden James Smyth. He was
born on March 20th in Windsor
Ontario. Mom and baby are enjoying
their time together in Snow Lake .
The Leyland-Smyth family took their
first vacation out west this summer
- getting baby Aiden trained for the
field at an early age . We hope they
enjoyed the trip and look forward to
seeing Holly back with us soon.
Other new members include
geologists Clint Brickner, Josh Miller,
Jamie Bewcyk, Tara Hartman, Jim
Sparling, Tania Heaton, and Maggie
Currie. Josh Miller had the opportunity to visit South Africa for the
World Cup soccer tournament. Other
highlights from his trip included visiting the wine regions of Stellenbausch
and befriending the local wildlife. Jim
Sparling and Tania Heaton came to
HBED this past January with their
daughter Kayla and black Labrador
puppy Blue. Jim has hired on as the
new Senior Exploration geologist and
Tania is our new database manager.
Maggie Currie is based out of Ottawa
and is helping us organize our vast
digital datasets. HBED hired a new
project geophysicist Matt Holden and
new Exploration Technician Coenraad
Jones this year. Welcome new staff!
Several children of HBED staff
graduated university this year. Crystal
and Brad Hancock (children of Doug
Hancock) received their Masters of
Social work and Commerce degrees

Crystal, Brad, and Raeanne!
Edgar and Mary Wright became
very proud grand-parents this year.
Mary's son Kelly West and wife Natalie
celebrated the arrival of their baby
Dayton. Edgar will also be retiring at
the end of this year, giving them time
to spend with their new grandson.
Thank you Edgar for all your hard
work (and patience!) . We will miss you
and wish you all the best.
Stacey Lowe- our GIS Technician
also resigned this year. She has chosen another career closer to her
hometown and family. She will also
be able to attend more Roughrider
games which may be the underlying
reason for her departure. Good luck
Stacey.
There were two weddings this year
at HBED. Chanelle Lepine (HBED)
and Quintin Joubert (Smelter/ESG)
were married on July 3rd at Walters
Falls in Ontario. Thank you to the
friends from Flin Flon who were able
to attend. The day was made even
more special since Quintin's mother
traveled from South Africa to be
part of his special day. Clint Brickner
and Heather Lewis were married in
Victoria, B.C. on October 2, 2010.
Thanks to all Clint and Heather's
family and friends for participating in
their wedding celebration.
Kenda and Jason Kozar went to
Disneyland and Tampa Bay in Florida
for their family vacation this past winter with parents Alvin and Ida, and
daughters Raeanne and Jessie.
HBED also had some students
hired over the summer to help with
our various drilling programs. These
included Justine Rodninsky , Burt
Stewart, Lindsey Reid, and Jen Volk.
Thank you all for your hard work
and good luck with your remaining
studies.
A special note regarding pets!
Welcome to Brent and Jacqueline
Neufeld's new dog Shady and the Jim
Sparling and Tania Heaton's black
lab Blue. Clint Brickner's dog Scrap
also deserves special recognition for
saving Clint's wife Heather and their
Saskatoon house from burning down .
He awoke Heather from a deep sleep
and the entire house was evacuated and the fire department notified . Scrap even made the Saskatoon
news! The Brickner family celebrated
the addition of a little puppy Isabella
in the winter of 2010 - a nice little
companion for Scrap .

201 0 Provincial Mine
Rescue Competition
his year's Provincial Competition
T
was held in Winnipeg on May
28-29 and hosted by San Gold of
Bissett. The format for the competition
was changed from the normal competition format. It was not held underground as it has been since 2001.
The competition venues were set
up at the Union Center and Union
Centre Parkade. The Mine Rescue
instructors and some of the suppliers developed and put the Union
Centre Mine into production Friday
afternoon & evening in the parkade.
A mine has never gone into production faster.
Saturday morning the teams went
into lockup and began their competition. Teams included HBMS Flin Flon,
HBMS Snow Lake, Vale Manitoba
Division, TANCO, AECL URL, and
the host team from San Gold.
The competition was different
this year as there was no complicated
underground problem for the teams
to solve. Teams were told that there
was no one in the mine and no fires
to find or take care of. The Captain
and Director were given maps and
were told to go into the mine and
map their progress and report the
items they found in the mine. The
important thing was to communicate
back to the Director what the team
had discovered and get the next directions to proceed in the mine. As the
team went further into the mock mine
they came upon a smoke chamber
and which led into a chamber completely filled with firefighting foam .
During the trip through the smoke
and foam the team was required to
find items and find phones tp relay
the information back to the director.
The teams were scheduled to
compete in different stations during the day , written exam, simulated
fire fighting , preparing equipment for
mission, first aid problem and a practical skills challenge. The competition
was organized in the same manner as
the Fernie competition and allowed
spectators from the city to get a
chance to see the skills of the mine
rescue teams.
When the competition was
finished and after a fantastic meal
at the banquet, the winner of the
competition was announced. The
winning team was HBMS Flin Flon
team Captained by Don Last, #2
Tracy Knutson , #3 Bob Lyons, #4
Dale Holmgren, Vice Captain Trevor
Thurstan, Director of Operations
Richard Trudeau (Instructor and Coach
were Olaf Hettrick and Don Peake).
As the winner of the 2010
Manitoba Provincial Competition the
Flin Flon team is eligible to compete
in the Western International Mine
Rescue Competition to be held at
Fernie, BC in 2011 . Good luck guys!

Blast from the Past
Hugh Frederick Bunn
1
hen visiting Gunner Johannson
last year (who has since passed
W
on), I asked him to send me a picture
that I knew he had of a Christmas
dinner taken out at the Mandy Mine,
Flin Flon in 1943.
No doubt some of the old time
miners around the North will recognize a few others besides the ones I
mentioned below.
#1. Andy Carson - hired 1928. I
used to see Andy around the mine back
in the 40s and 50s going about his business of Surveying and what ever a Mine
Engineer does in his duties.
#2 . Leonard Lapoint - hired
1929. Leonard grew up in The Pas
with his family just past the dam and
bridge over The Pas river just West of
the town. When I first met Lenoard, he
was working for Nip Johnson on the
Blast Hole Diamond Drill crew out of
the North Main office. During his travels around the mine, on talking to him
I eventually found out that he had hired
on with the company when he was a
very young boy and due to his age, they
had him delivering messages around
surface to the different departments.
When he reached an older age, he then
transferred to The Mine department
and worked his way up to the position
he held when I first met him.
#3. Sandy Morrice - hired
1940. Sandy of course was the mine
Superintendent when I first met him
and worked his way up to being the
CEO of the whole company before
retiring in 1977 . The rumor I heard
back then was that Sandy had been a
high school teacher in Flin Flon and
then quit to take up a position with
Hud Bay. Good guy.
#4. Gunnar Johannson - hired
1943. Gunnar is the gentleman I
visited in Selkirk last year. He first
met his wife May at an early age and
shortly after marrying, they boarded a
train and went up to IIford (Mile 286)
on the Hud Bay Railway & then flew
out to the Gods Lake Mine. They
took up house keeping in a little log
shack on an Island not far from the
Mine while Gunnar commuted back
and forth to work as a miner for a few
years - in a boat. He then quit his job
as an experienced miner and hired on
with Hud Bay in Flin Flon in 1943.
Having some experience on the new
Track Bound Loader (JEEP) at the
Gods Lake Mine, he passed on his
skills to others when Hud Bay started
receiving the machines.
Gunnar worked for some of
the older Shaft Miner Jigger bosses
(Tom Kirkpatrick, Bill Peterson, Jake
Steinarson and others) sinking some
of the internal shafts in the main mine
over the following years. He then transferred to Snow Lake as a mine supervisor and then into the Safety office.
Among one of his many duties at that
time, he was on the hospital Board
of Directors when they built the new
hospital in Snow Lake and was directly
respe nsible for the hospital being in the
good location that it is in today, across
from the local beach area.
May and Gunnar raised their
family in Snow Lake and he retired
in 1980 and moved to Selkirk, MB.
Have another Merry Christmas
dinner, 66 years after the First Mandy
Mine dinner, and my best regards to all.
:Merry Christmas & a J-{appy 1\[f'UJ fj'ear!
