My Drifter Sisters, My friends,
I am always amazed at how fast
time passes – whether you are
having fun or not. It has been quite
a journey this year, being involved
in the planning of the FIRST EVER
Drifter cruise. I am excited about
Sailing the High Seas and Driftin’ with Ease with my
wonderful Drifter Sisters.
On the East Coast, there is a fast food chain called
Chick-Fil-A and their main goal is service – good
service. If you have ever visited Chick-Fil-A, you will
most likely hear the term “my pleasure”. No matter
what your request is, they aim to please. So if you
request extra sugar in your coffee, you may hear back,
“That will be my pleasure.” The response is practically
always the same, no matter what you need.
For me, it has truly been ‘my pleasure’ to serve our
organization and my chosen community this year and
for the last three years. The Drifters, Incorporated and
each chapter therein, has worked extremely hard, met
and surpassed numerous goals, and left our chosen
communities better than we found it. From the small
tasks to the enormous ones, we have tackled them
with a smile.
manner. Please continue to meet annually or biannually in your Clusters and reach out to
neighboring states/regions to join you as you meet.
Continue to be sisterly to one another and resolve
issues with love, kindness and dignity.
I would like thank The Executive Board, for your
dedication and hard work this year. I especially want
to thank Convention Planner Elsie Simmons Huey for
going above and beyond the call of duty this year.
Elsie and I traveled to Raleigh to meet with the
Raleigh Chapter and we accomplished a lot and
worked hand-in-hand with Raleigh to try to ensure an
OUTSTANDING Convention. The ladies of Raleigh
are indeed an outstanding group and I have no doubt
this year’s convention will be nothing short of that.
I welcome all new Drifters as well as first time
attendees to the 56th Annual Drifter Convention. I
hope you are ready to “Sail the High Seas and Drift with
Ease!”
I have enjoyed my service to Drifters and I look
forward to serving you in a fourth year as National
President.
Best wishes as we start our 2012-2013 year!
With gratitude for your service,
It is exhilarating to see the accomplishments of the
organization nationally and on a local level, and it has
been the collective work of our entire organization.
Thank you for your dedicated service and for being a
valuable member of The Drifters, Incorporated. Each
of you has helped to contribute to the success of our
organization, by your local fundraising, and
wonderful community programs, and of course
dynamic membership.
I hope that you have enjoyed a positive experience this
year and that The Drifters, Incorporated has provided
you with the ability to develop yourself in a positive

accomplishments of her splinters- Spencer and

creative spirit in unique ways such as having her
grandmother host the sleepover for her dad and uncle
in celebration of Mothers' Day.
Drifters Gerry Wallace and Velma Falls have been
busy using their skills at the Mecklenburg County
Board of Elections. This is the second time they have
provided seasonal support to the board.

recently coordinated a reception to honor NFL coach
Steve Wilks who has joined the Charlotte Panthers
coaching staff. Steve grew up in East Stonewall.

Drifter Ardella Wilson accompanied her daughter,
Counsel General Cynthia Blandford Nash on an
exciting trip to Johannesburg, South Africa and
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe to attend the Africa Travel

participated in a Safari and both rode an elephant and
saw all kinds of animals, monkeys, hedge hogs, lions,
alligators and hundreds of different birds. In addition,
they visited the largest falls in the world, Victoria
Falls, where they saw both ends of the rainbow and

Cleveland Communiqué
By Andrea Dockery
The Cleveland Drifters continued to work hard, yet
play hard over the past year. We had the joy of
www.driftersinc.org
August 2012
installing three new members! As we convened at
Drifter Norma Singleton’s home in the spirit of the
season, we welcomed Victoria Lacey, Kymberly HallChambers, and Janeen Shaw. These dynamic women
entered our ranks with diverse backgrounds, which
will only enhance and uplift the great work of our
chapter. We were delighted and excited that our new
members were quick to engage and support our
programming and share in sisterly love.
The Cleveland Drifters continued to serve our seniors
at our monthly ‘Bingo Night’ at the Fairfax
Rehabilitation Center. They always welcome us and we
enjoy our evenings with them. We provide them with
much needed clothing and personal items. We engage
the group with lively bingo, fun prizes, and warm,
sisterly smiles. We also united ourselves with the
women and children of the New Life Community Center
during the Thanksgiving holiday. This transitional
living facility works with community partners to
provide opportunities to support families in need. We
prepared baskets for families to ensure that their
holiday was plentiful and filled with joy.
The
Cleveland Drifters also provided fabulous holiday
gifts for our seniors at Fairfax in the spirit of Kwanzaa.
We decided to embark on a new social outing, The
Menu 6 Project. This project was a fun mixer, Martini
Monday, which reintroduced our chapter to the
Cleveland community and educated them on the goals
of our organization. We also continued to support
Drifter Lisa Kelly-Hogan as supporters of the City
Mission Project as servers to the residents during the
dinner hour. We pride ourselves in reaching out to
the Cleveland community and partner with other
groups and organizations to assist, sustain, and
support diverse programs.
DRIFTER HIGHLIGHTS
Drifter Cheryl King, chapter President, continues to
enjoy her retirement. She has traveled to St. Martin,
Puerto Rico, and Washington, DC. Visiting the Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial was the highlight of
her DC trip. Though she is a renowned traveler,
bonding with her Drifter sisters and relishing in the
good work that we do, the “sisterhood is paramount”.
Drifter Andrea Dockery was re-elected K-8 Memberat-Large for the Cleveland Teachers Union. She continues
to serve the members of the union as the Salary &
Benefits Chairperson. As an elected member of the
Executive Board, she plans to travel to Detroit, MI to
represent the union as a delegate for their national

convention. She also plans to maintain her perfect
attendance in the ‘travel club’ with visits to San Juan,
PR, Atlanta, and a surprise trip in the making.
Drifter Linda Edwards is another member of the
retiree club! Having dedicated years of service to
Cuyahoga Community College, Linda has a newfound
freedom: world traveler. Athens, Greece and many of
the Greek Islands and Istanbul, Turkey were two
remarkable trips. Linda also spent the Christmas
holidays in Seattle and Las Vegas. One of her most
memorable trips was the visit to the Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Memorial and a visit to the Pentagon.
Drifter Mary Glazer is officially retired! Having
worked as Diversity Director for Realty One real estate
company in Northern Ohio, she devoted more than 30
years to a career in the real estate market. The plan is
for Mary and Driftwood Walter to continue traveling
often and far!
Drifter Lisa Kelly-Hogan’s daughter Randi got
accepted into the accelerated nursing program at Kent
State University. Her daughter Mya made the Dean’s
List, spring term, at the University of Pittsburgh where
she is studying pharmacy. She will be traveling to
Myrtle Beach in August for a family vacation.
Drifter Kymberly Hall-Chambers is celebrating the
accomplishments of her Kindlings. Her son, Leon
James completed his first year at the University of
Akron and she is looking forward to him playing
football with the Zips next year. Daughter Danyelle

Decatur-DeKalb Dialogue
The Decatur-Dekalb Drifters’ 2011-2012 theme, in
conjunction with our National theme, is “Ain’t No
Stopping Us Now” taken from McFadden and
Whitehead’s smash hit. For this program year, we
put our Chapter in high gear on the non-stop cruise
position, and the results have been outstanding, if we
have to say so ourselves! All Aboard!
We started our year off with a recommitment service
and pledge entitled, “We Must Move On!” This
pledge set the tone for the accomplishments we have
made in honor of our National Chapter, our
community and our Chapter.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Thanksgiving baskets with all the trimming and a
generous check were given to two families that we
have adopted for a number of years for this project.

which is noted as America’s greenest County. In
addition, Drifter Dot Sampson organized an
educational scholarship in honor of her mother,
the late Mrs. Betty Sampson, who passed last year.
Through these two efforts, we offered one
thousand five hundred dollars to three students
from the South DeKalb area. The Betty Sampson
Scholarship was awarded to Talore Williams, and
she will be attending West Georgia College in the
fall.
The other two recipients will also be
attending college in the fall. We had a great
turnout and a brief discussion on the benefits of
walking/exercising for health matters and an
inexpensive means of spending wholesome time
with our families.
Conyers Seniors Rehabilitation Center
Hosted by Drifters Dot Sampson, Sandra Gray and
Bonita Swain, Brenda Broadnax and Ruby Thomas,
in honor of Mother’s Day in May, we visited Conyers
Seniors Rehabilitation Center with about sixty shoe
boxes loaded with blankets, toiletries, socks, pens,
paper, hugs, pictures and more. We could not tell
who enjoyed the event more – the residents or their
children who were seniors themselves in many
instances. Drifter Ruby read her poem entitled
“Drifters’ Mother’s Day” to the residents to their delight
as well as that of their family. Drifter’s Ruby poem
appeared in the National Directory last year.
Save Our Students Academy (SOS)
In April, the Chapter supported Save Our Students
Academy, a youth violence prevention/enrichment
program founded by Drifter Ruby Thomas in 1994.
We were able to reach a number of youth, obtain
volunteers, officers and needed funds for the program.
It is located at 2262 Campbellton Road, S.W. Atlanta,

soul serenades to our Driftwoods and special friends
who blushed and giggled like teenage boys.
Drifters, Driftwoods, Kindling and friends attended
the annual Christmas Gospel Fest at the High Museum
of Art, one of America’s renowned museums. The
performers took us to the highest level of excellence
and praise. Our own Driftwood Lloyd Swain played
major roles in the instrumental and vocal aspects of
the evening. The evening was a perfect way to start
the Christmas celebration.

Just a year ago, Whitney Thomas married the lovely
Brittany Thomas on a beautiful, outdoor terrace

the entire Thomas-Broadnax family. Congratulations

accompanied by a host of beautiful bridesmaids,
groomsmen, ring bearers and adorable flower girl.
The entertainment had us all moving our feet to such
favorites as the phenomenal “Wobble,” and the meal
and beverages were to perfection. Drifter Claudia
and Driftwood Evan looked so much like the bride
and groom themselves, that they could have easily
renewed their vows. Congratulations to the Lawson’s.

girls. For the Holidays, the
Chapter gave the Fulbright
Family food and gift cards to help make their holidays
brighter. Drifter Portia Hedgespeth sees the family
frequently, at church and learned that Stephanie, the
oldest, has accepted a job with a homecare agency to
help supplement her income as a college student.
Other recipients of our generosity included: Sickle Cell
Children’s

which
provides multiple services to
men who are substance
abusers, which exemplifies
their slogan, ‘Saving families,
one father at a time; BMAD
(Brothers Making a Difference), an organization on a
mission to build a foundation in young boys which
will prepare them to be productive citizens, who will
build strong families and stronger communities; and
Wigs for Kids, an organization that reaches out to kids
and young adults with hair loss, notably, cancer
patients. We contributed toiletries for the homeless
via a Drifter’s church, collected aluminum can tabs for
the Ronald McDonald House, and we dressed 36 dolls,
which were Christmas gifts for needy children
presented by the Old Newsboys’ Goodfellows Fund of
Detroit.

CHAPTER EVENTS
Annual Events
Having sustained an ankle injury and surgery in
August, Drifter Patricia Gardner managed to followthrough with her last activity as Program Committee
Chairman. Along with her capable Committee, a
highly successful 4th Annual Stratford Shakespeare
Festival day trip was held in September. Two (2)
busloads of Drifters, Driftwoods and guests (100 in
total) journeyed to Ontario, Canada for a day of frolic
and fun. They had continental breakfast while on the
bus; a wonderful buffet lunch; and enjoyed the
Stratford production of “Jesus Christ Super Star.”
After stopping at the border for Duty Free Shopping,
snacks with beverages and raffled gifts were provided.
Arranged by Drifter Laverne Ethridge, the annual
Christmas activity included Sunday brunch at the
fabulous Fish Market Restaurant and afterwards, a
short stroll down to the Virgil Carr Center to see the
musical, A Jazzy Christmas by the Plowshares Theater
Group. It was an excellent starter for the approaching
Holiday Season for the 30 Drifters, Driftwood and
guests who attended the affair.

Carson, Linda Carter-McClure, Laverne Ethridge,
Carmen Frohman, Patricia Gardner, Barbara
Macklin, Jean Nash, Del Ortiz, Dianne Robinson,

completed, the group played cards and fellowshipped
with each other into the wee hours of the morning and
several spent the night.
Drifters Laverne Ethridge and Jean Nash coordinated
their 2nd Ladies Only Cruise on March 3, 2012. This

Oh what a glorious day! It’s not
every day that one celebrates a
birthday of 103 years! In April,
Drifter Maribodine Robinson
celebrated her 103rd birthday with
her Drifter Sisters at a local
restaurant - cake and all! An extra special gift from her
Drifter Sisters consisted of a gift
bag filled with a continuous
supply of $1 bills. It was a
delight to see the glee in her
eyes as she pulled each $1 from
the bag that just kept coming,
and coming, and coming.
Drifter Charlotte Carson and Driftwood Johnny
Carson celebrated their 50th Anniversary on the
Island Princess cruise ship. They cruised 10 days in the
Caribbean visiting these ports of call: Ocho Rios,
Jamaica, Cartagena; Colon, Panama; Limon, Costa
Rica; and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. The
highlights of cruise were their excursion to the
Panama Canal and frequent visits to the Lotus Spa.
Drifter Barbara Macklin's daughter, Kindling
Yolanda Macklin, continues to recuperate from major
injuries sustained on February 19, 2011 when she was
struck by a reckless driver while walking her dog. The
incident was traumatic for both and though it’s a year
later, Yolanda still has physical challenges. Please keep
her in your prayers.
Drifter Laverne Ethridge and Driftwood Claude
Ethridge celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary,
October 14, 2011. They took their family on a
Christmas Cruise, which began Christmas Eve and
ended New Year’s Day. They are extremely proud of
their oldest Grandson Christopher who is graduating
from High School this June. He is still deciding on
which college he will attend.
Drifter Dianne Bostic Robinson, after serving as
moderator of the Presbytery of Detroit, is now Chair of
the Coordinating Cabinet. The Coordinating Cabinet is
comprised of the committee chairs of the Presbytery.
She was elected as a Commissioner to the General
Assembly (GA) for the Presbytery Church USA to be

and received the Anchor Award for service on
Mariner's Inn Board of Directors in several roles:
Executive, VP, Chair of the Human Resources
Committee and Chair of the Strategic Planning
Committee. She has also traveled to Las Vegas and
Hilton Head Island, SC.
Now on the mend, Drifter Patricia Gardner continues
her educational and technical consultant services for
the Michigan State Department of Education. Her
various intra-state trips, as well as the For Women
Only (FWO) Conference in White Plains, New York,
are among her most recent travels. Many of her
Drifters Sisters are also members of FWO and while
together, they enjoyed shopping, entertainment and
memorable kinship.
In early May, Michael C.
McClure (US Army 1st Lt.), son of
Drifter Linda Carter-McClure
and
Driftwood
Cameron
McClure, left for Afghanistan
where he will spend about a year
on this tour of duty. Your prayers are requested to
keep him out of harm’s way and for a safe return
home.
Jayde Gray, granddaughter of Drifter Dorothy
Brown, is graduating from Groves High School. She
played basketball and was a good student. Jayde will
be attending either University of Toledo or Michigan
State University this fall. Great-grandson, Jordan
Gray, won the Spelling B at his school and was
featured in the Walled Lake Consolidated Schools
newsletter. Because of illness, Jordan, an A student,
was disappointed that he could not represent his
school in the regional competition. Granddaughter
Alexandra was accepted, and will attend University of
California - Berkeley in August. She plans to get a
master degree in Urban Planning.
Drifter Audrea Calloway cannot wait to see and hold
her great-granddaughter, Alonna Raqual Fullwood,

Over the past three

the
Houston

Inc. has maintained, and
supported a partnership
with the University of
Houston's
Relatives
Raising Kinchildren. The
Houston
Drifters
specifically focuses its
efforts on this groups’
grandparents raising grandchildren. Through grant
funding, the University provides free services for
grandparents and other relatives who have taken on
the responsibility of surrogate parenting when the
biological parents are unable to do so. University
support includes information and referral to service
delivery; the establishment of support groups; and the
provision of avenues to access public benefits. The
Houston Drifters take this initiative to a higher-level
by providing direct support to participants with much
needed food, toys, books and other basic staples
necessary for the grandparent and grandchild to enjoy
in-home, positive family events. The Chapter adds an
additional dimension to the project by involving
students from the Energized for Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (E-STEM) family of
schools in a service project. The students procure
donations of food items and amenities and assist the
Drifters in delivering the goods to the grandparents.
At the November 2012 activity, E-STEM students
provided lively entertainment before presenting the
grandparents with gorgeous baskets filled with food
for the holidays.
For the Christmas holidays, Drifters donated ageappropriate toys for the grandchildren, and food for
family events. At the December support group
meeting, the adults were presented with their donated
goods and grandparents as well as grandchildren
enjoyed a wholesome and nutritious repast.

cognitive health is in a decline. The party was
complete with beads, games, Cajun-style food, and
dancing. The music was the kind you hear on

to take to the floor and parade in unique carnival-style
strutting.

Fun Combined with Fundraising
The Houston Drifters have mastered the art of having
fun, even when raising funds. This year's April
fundraiser was held at the Ensemble Theater, one of
the only professional theatres in the region dedicated
to the production of works portraying the African
American experience, and the oldest and largest
professional African American theatre in the
Southwest. Drifters and their friends bought the
house for this event and engaged in uninhibited fun
and laughter while viewing the play Cuttin' Up, by

Charles Randolph Wright. The play brought comedy
to an exploration of the African American barbershop
trimmed with a series of thought-provoking and
funny anecdotes. The pièce de résistance to the
afternoon was the elaborate and delectable assortment
of food and drink elegantly served pre-show and at
intermission.

well worth our time, we got a chance to see one

HUMANITARIAN/CIVIC INVOLVEMENT
Annual St. Patrick Senior Day Celebration
The Las Vegas Chapter of Drifters’ annual St. Patrick’s
Day celebration at Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior
Center was a great success. The Drifters presented the
seniors with gifts and treated the seniors to wonderful
songs and original poems. Driftwood Herbert
Freeman sang songs accompanied on the piano by
William Parker. Johnny Hampton spoke eloquently as
he read from his private poetry collection. Mr.
Hampton is planning to publish a book that will
include all his original poems. Drifter Marsha
Kimble-Simms, Esq., was the Emcee at this year’s
event and gave seniors an opportunity to talk about

such topics as their children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren. This was a sensational gathering of
over one hundred seniors from across Las Vegas.
Each senior received a gift from the Las Vegas Drifters.
Drifter Carlene La Fear-Williams chaired the event.
Also present were Betty Thomas-Orr, new member
Melody Nelson, Pat Davis, and La Frances Dancy.
Civic /Political Action
Drifters Betty Thomas-Orr and Jackie Hoggart, chairs
of the Political Action Committee walked precincts for
Marsha Kimble-Simms, Esq. during her campaign for
North Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge. Kudos to
Drifters Betty and Jackie, for knocking on doors, and
walking in the hot summer temperatures, to remind
the electorate, to go out and vote. This activity is
historically significant because many people died so
that African Americans could have the right to vote.
Thanksgiving Baskets
The Las Vegas Drifters collaborated with the 100 Black
Women, sororities, fraternities, and the Links, Inc., to
provide over 150 baskets to families in our African
American community. Food, sweaters, and coats in all
sizes were provided for anyone in need.
Shade Tree for Victims of Domestic Violence
The Las Vegas Drifters donated items to Shade Tree, a
shelter for women and children who were victims of
domestic violence. The Drifters collected school
supplies and toiletries for women and children who
live in the shelter. The Drifters have volunteered at
the shelter assisting with various needs.
SCHOLARSHIP/EDUCATION

This has been a banner year for the Mitchellville
Drifters. Newly elected President Joan Stevens led us
through a very prosperous year. Through our
fundraising events, we were able to raise funds to
support our charitable giving as well as our upcoming
2015 convention.
Thanks to Drifter Lula Hicks, the Mitchellville
Drifters started the fiscal year off at the Woodmore
Country Club in Mitchellville, MD. During this
meeting, we installed Drifter Sheila Bruce who was
recommended by Drifter, National Secretary and
President of the Southeastern PA Chapter, Donna

HUMANITARIAN/CIVIC INVOLVEMENT
Under the leadership of Drifter Sheila Bruce, the
Mitchellville Drifters held its 7th annual holiday dinner
at Avery House in Rockville, MD on November 13,
2011. The Avery House is a halfway house for women
and their children who are trying to get a new start in
life. Avery House is our special project. Each Drifter
purchased gifts for the children and some purchased
items for the house as well. Many of the women that
reside at Avery House arrive with nothing, so the
Drifters donated toiletries to each mother as well as
replenished toiletries for future residents. In
attendance were Drifters Sheila Bruce, Lynnie Bruce,
Faye Cobb, Dianne Williams, Thelma Scott, Renee
McDonald, Urlecia Cooks, Helen Nuttall and Tanai
White. Our guest note speaker was Linda Botts, CEO
of Ashlin Management who addressed the Avery
House residents regarding professional development.

Annual Brunch
The Montclair Drifters hosted their annual scholarship
brunch on March 4th. This year’s theme was “Unleash

animal-print attire. A great time was had by all
brunch attendees (we exceeded last year’s attendance
with a guest count of over 900) and the silent auction
was a huge success! Additionally, this year’s brunch
included a voter registration drive; registration forms
were available to our guests. Our sister chapters from
Baltimore,
Washington,

Notable News from New York
By Gayle Lewis
SCHOLARSHIP/EDUCATION
GDAY from Lovely Bermuda!! We held our first
Shirley Person Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser
Cruise in April. Over 40 guests joined us as we set sail
from lovely New York and journeyed across the
Atlantic to Kings Wharf, Bermuda. We had a blastfrom our Opening Welcome Dinner- to our Poolside
Photo Op- to our Black Dress Evening- to our private
Cocktail Sip and finally our Farewell Wine Basket
sendoff. Guests were given lovely gift bags that
contained all sorts of goodies to make their trip
enjoyableincluding
rain
ponchos
(which
unfortunately came in handy), candies, sanitizers,
water, etc. A great time was had by all. More
importantly, we raised funds, which will be given to
two worthy high school students to pursue their
dreams for higher education.
The travel bug continued to bite our members this
year. Phyllis Hailstock traveled back and forth
between NY and her home in North Carolina. Marilyn
and Jimmie Warren traveled to Washington State,
Atlantic City and points further south. President
Arthuree Evans and Driftwood Harvey traveled to
South Carolina among other sites. Gayle Lewis took
frequent forays to Atlantic City and the Hamptons.
Rene Pritchard-Lennon was bi-coastal this year, as
she jetted between NY and California, racking up
frequent flyer miles!! Valencia Caldwell made trips to
South Carolina and points south- including Myrtle
Beach.
CHAPTER EVENTS
We were extremely fortunate to add three new
members to our Chapter this year. Evelyn Batts,
retired Social Worker and current Assistant Professor
of Sociology at the College of New Rochelle joined our
ranks.
Eleanor Clarke came on board and is
providing
needed
assistance
in
information
technology. Eleanor recently retired from the Port
Authority of New York and New Jersey as a
technology analyst and training administrator. She is
very active in her church (Lay Reader), volunteers at
WBGO- a local jazz radio station, and still finds time to
be an Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay
Cosmetics Inc. Valencia Caldwell is the third new

member, who has rounded out our group. Valencia is
a high school teacher and a Sunday school teacher as
well. She is active with a number of community
groups, including Black Teachers Who Care. We
welcome them all and look forward to great things.
We sponsored three theater parties this year. We saw
Sistas- The Musical, an Off Broadway play about
three female generations reminiscing about the life of
their deceased matriarch through song. We danced in
the aisles as we remembered songs from Bessie Smith
thru Beyonce. We also saw Black Angels Over
Tuskegee- about the initiation of the black cadre of
pilots. It was great. Finally, we saw Alicia Keys’ play
Stick Fly about a family vacationing in Martha’s
Vineyard where race and rivalry, class and family
come together in an explosive comedy of manners
about today’s complex world. Wonderful!
PERSONAL
Drifter Phyllis Hailstock’s granddaughter, Tennille
Smith, graduated from Mercy College receiving a
Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Phyllis’
great grand-daughter Tia celebrated her 10th birthday
this year and is quite the little miss. Driftwood
Edward Feaster Jr. (Phyllis Hailstock) was appointed
First Vice Commander at the American Legion
Colonel Charles Young Post #398 in The Village of
Harlem. Way to go Eddie!
Drifter Rene Pritchard-Lennon’s first grandchild
Jackson Aidan Hogan was born on June 11, 2011 to
Megan and Curtis Hogan, Esqs. He is a very active
young man. At eleven months, he is already taking
music, gymnastic and reading lessons. Jackson
celebrated his first birthday at the Little Gym. His
grandmother takes delight in his smiles and laughter
daily.
August 2012
Driftwood Joe Davis (Jane Handy Wright) also left us
this year. Our condolences go to both families.
CIVIC
This year we again provided a bountiful Thanksgiving
for a family selected by Rene Pritchard-Lennon and
daughter Megan. Our recipient was selected from a
host of candidates at the Brooklyn Young Mother’s
Collective. This organization provides support to
teenage mothers and is a favorite of the chapter. We
are also blessed that Rene’s daughter Megan is a
volunteer and mentor for this organization.
Christmas found us once again relishing our role of
Santa Claus, as we provided a meaningful holiday for
two families this year. We were able to provide
clothing, books, toys and equipment to Wanda Dyatt
and her two children, as well as Bernadette Douglas
and her three children. It was a marathon, but we are
really enjoying the role of giving and helping.
In January, we began to actively support, the Food
Pantry at Convent Avenue Baptist Church. Though
their food subsidies were cut, the need in the
community increased. The NY Drifters adopted this
worthwhile cause and have been supplying monetary
funds to help them with their endeavors, to feed those
less fortunate than us. Our President, Arthuree Evans
and fellow Drifter Valencia Caldwell also volunteer
at the food pantry.
Gayle Lewis’ nephew Edward Lewis-Smith, was
asked to play acoustic guitar with the Shanghai
Philharmonic Orchestra. Edward lives in China,
where he is head of International Faculty and a jazz
musician. He has played in numerous venues,
including the Cotton Club- yes, China has a jazz
Cotton Club! He also produced and played in the Nike
concerts in various Chinese cities this past year.
In February, we hosted our annual Black History
Month Celebration at the Greater Harlem Nursing
home. We are not sure who had more fun, us, or the
residents. We had a young lady (age 70) do a fabulous
Tina Turner rendition of “Rolling Down the River”.
The Drifters recited poetry, played trivia games, sang
songs, and danced for the residents. It was especially
meaningful this year, because Drifter Gayle Lewis’
father Earl, was one of the residents. He enjoyed
telling all who would listen that these were “his girls”!
Former Drifters Allison Lewis-Smith and Debra
Leon, joined us as well. This marvelous affair was
coordinated by our Vice President Marilyn Warren,
with assistance from Drifter Laurell Fogle and
Darlene Rogers, who also outfitted us with lovely
African costumes.
On a sad note, we lost our dear Alumni Evelyn Parker
after a brief illness. Evelyn was a past National and
Chapter President, and will be truly missed.
New York also supported our sister chapters in their
fundraising activities this year. We boogied with
Montclair at their annual brunch, we enjoyed the

annual Ocean luncheon, and we attended our Region’s
Cluster Meeting this year in June- a Wine and Jazz
tasting. NY was in the house this year!!
A TRIBUTE TO OUR SISTER ALUMNA, EVELYN
BARNES-PARKER
Have you ever wondered, what is the glue? Who is
the glue that holds it all together? Well, we never did
wonder and fortunately, we let Evelyn know she was
“the one we ran to.” When we needed grounding or
sense out of no sense, there was Evelyn.
Evelyn was a National Officer (many years ago) and
also held numerous offices in the New York Chapter
of The Drifters, Inc. The talent she had with budgets,
and questioning discretions was what she showed us
all at convention. Every National President after that
time could relax if they knew Evelyn was on the Audit
Committee.
By the way, if anyone could check, I think it could be
established that no one else has attended as many
conventions as Evelyn.
Evelyn knew herself and was very comfortable with
who she was and when she let you “in”, you knew the
job she was asked to do was in good hands.
The “oldster” as we imagine the alumna are called,
will remember Evelyn and miss her as much as all
chapters of The Drifters, Inc. We just wanted to share
our love for her with you as she shared it with us.
Evelyn, we are so happy we let you know how we felt
about you before you passed. We didn’t want to give
you your roses after you were gone.
There are things that GOD has for you to do so “GET
TO IT”.
LOVE, Your New York Alumna Sisters -- 4/12/12
