THE PEN OF THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT
CONGRATULATIONS Sisters on being
“A group of women with civic, charitable,
educational and social interests who have
dedicated their talents to the enhancement
of their chosen communities and the universal image of womanhood” for one-half
century.
I believe that our Founders would be proud
to see how we have continued to enhance
their vision. I am truly humbled to have
National President been an integral part of this organization
Irene E. Eskridge with the principles that we uphold, the
things we do together as a National Organization and on the local level as well as what we do on a daily
basis as individuals.
Four years ago, our National Executive Board set our course
for service to mankind, encouraged harmonious relationships
among members and pledged commitments to achieve our
goals and objectives. We graciously accepted our many challenges and moved our sisterhood into the future by taking
active leadership roles and promoting ideas and ideals of society.
Our Executive Board has been has been exceptional and I
thank them for their enthusiasm, dedication, support and the
outstanding jobs which they have done. My praise goes to
National Vice President Deborah Pryor, National Secretary
Donna Roderick, National Treasurer Jonetta Appling, National Parliamentarian Linda Edwards, National Protocol Secretary Portia Hedgespeth, National Membership Chair Barbara Harris, National Public Relations Chair Marcy Muldrow
Sanders, National Condolence Chair Leslie Wesley and National Convention Planner Mildred Harris.
During the 2008-2009 club year, I met with the following
Chapters: Detroit, Cleveland, South Bend, Las Vegas, Los
Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Portsmouth, Richmond, Petersburg and Norfolk. My thanks goes to each
chapter for its gracious hospitality. (Detailed information
regarding my goals is included in my Annual Report which
will be presented at Convention).
As our Organization works tirelessly to “Build Stronger Communities,” it becomes more of an enormous challenge in today’s circumstances. However, we know what must be done
and we will remain strong and steadfast to accomplish our
goal.
Please accept my sincere gratitude for your having allowed
me to be our President for the past four years. You have
shown true sisterhood as we journeyed through the Organization’s continued growth and development, the deaths of some
of our loved ones, the births of new loved ones and a meeting-of-the-minds for the sake of The Drifters, Incorporated.
While encountering these many challenges, we were able to
continue striving to keep the Founders’ goals and objectives
in the forefront of our decisions.
A very special thank-you goes my daughter, Che’, my son-inlaw, David and my grandchildren, Gabrielle and Brandon
who continue to give me much-needed love and encouragement. My passion and dedication have never waived during
my term in the office of President on The National Drifters,
Incorporated.
My major goal was to uphold my commitment to our Organization, what we stand for and to make sure we followed the
guidelines. To our next President, I say “congratulations” and
we are ready to move our Organization to the next level and
to meet tomorrow’s challenges.
“Love in the Family breeds love in our community.
Love in our community breeds love in our world.”
Sisterly,
Strengthen Families to Build Better

Drifters Ride Again! In collaboration with the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (Co-Founder Drifter Sister Barbara Harris), Drifter Sisters Barbara, Toni and Driftwood
Alton Johnson traveled on a missionary venture to Cairo,
Egypt and Alexandria. Drifter Sisters Toni and Barbara and
Driftwood Alton Johnson delivered school supplies and left
monetary gifts in the name of the Metro Atlanta Drifters to Nubian Village children and families another act of humanitarianism
to ”save the children”. From the monasteries of Alexandria to
the River Nile, the under-under privileged and deprived children swam from shore up to our boat in mid streams begging for
“U.S. Dollars”. Oh how grateful our children in the United
States of America should be because the CHILDREN OF
EGYPT took “begging” to another level…a level that our children could never even dream of experiencing in America!
Here we GROW AGAIN…Metro Atlanta Drifters and Driftwoods living and working the National Drifter Theme this past

Methodist Law Day and Cascade United Methodist Law Day
where the Founder Honorable Judge Barbara A. Harris chaired
programs calling on her fellow Drifters Judges, Justices, Attorneys and various organizations to rally young poets to the stage

that Maya Angelou and other great poets would “stop and stare

The Metro Atlanta Drifters continue to “Save the Children” as
Drifter Sister Toni Driskell was recently appointed Vice
President of the Fayette County CASA (Court Appointed Child

rest and sleep as God intended in HIS WORD.

HUMANITARIAN &
CIVIC INVOLVEMENT
The Decatur-DeKalb Drifters (DDD) are on the move. As a
united organization of dedicated women, we are making a difference in our community. We are proud to note some of the accomplishments of our chapter. September found the DecaturDeKalb Drifters actively working for Candidate Obama to become elected as President of the United States. These efforts
were led by Yvonne Harris, Claudia Lawson and Ruby
Thomas. We did mailings, door to door campaigning, registering of citizens to vote, manning telephones, and ensuring that
correct literature was distributed.
During the month of October we continued to work for Candidate Obama. Additionally, we participated in our annual “Pink
Ribbon Saturday” at a neighborhood Kroger store in South
DeKalb. We were very successful in soliciting donations for the
Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. This activity was led
by Sandra Gray with assistance from Josephine Lamar, Daysha
Young-McDaniel, Bobbie Gary, Vyvyan Dean, Claudia Lawson
and Brenda Broadnax.
Another activity in October was the Women’s Forum on Family
Values held at Friendship Baptist Church led by Drifter
Brenda Broadnax. Drifter Ruby Thomas was one of three
women panelist, along with Chief Judge Lear Sears of the Georgia Supreme Court. Issues were raised and the Fireside Chat
made all in attendance aware of the importance of family, and
what each of us could do as individuals and as a group.
Two deserving and needy families were provided meals and
monetary tokens during the Thanksgiving season. One family is
composed of a grandmother rearing three grandchildren. (Two
teenage girls and one elementary boy) The other family is reuniting after the father’s return from prison. The mother is a
recovering addict and the children were sent to foster homes and
other family members’ homes throughout the state. We are
happy to report that both families are progressing. Our chapter
members now know that Sandra Gray can really shop and
“stretch the eagle”.

METROPOLITAN WASHINGTON DC
by Evelyn G. Horad
The chapter started this unique/special year with all the excitement, happiness and gratitude everyone experienced with the
inauguration of President Barack Obama. Friends and relatives
were welcomed from far and near. All members were involved
at the many celebrations in spirit if not physically. Such unity
had never been seen in our home town before and it continues
with a very visible President and his First Lady doing such unusual hands-on programs with all citizens, especially Mrs.
Obama working with children in several schools in the DC area
and serving in “soup’ kitchens. President Cheri B. Castillo
has led our group in many community-service-outreach projects
that included supplying clothes to a single parent with five young
children. The young mother was recommended by Sasha Bruce
Youth Work. Each Drifter sister selected a child to give various
articles of clothing; we had asked for ideas and the children
were happy to comply. For several months members brought
special gifts for other designated community recipients: In
March we gave pajamas to the Child and Family Services; April
it was for the Sasha Bruce facility; June was Camille’s Place,
where Drifter sisters contributed items such as: toothbrushes,
combs, brushes, hand wash, creams, body powder, deodorants,
etc.
A highlight this year was when we hosted a Cluster Meeting with
the chapter members from Mitchellville and Baltimore, Md. It
was a fantastic gathering, if we do say so! The setting was Tantallon Country Club in Ft. Washington, Md. “Spring” was the
simple theme, with many tulips and other spring flowers in
abundance. The food was ample- light finger foods, vegetables/
dips, lots of fruit, desserts, beverages. Music was supplied by a
lovely pianist , Yvonne Johnson, who played appropriate standards/ ballads. We played games-question and answer type.
We gave pretty book marks to everyone and had many door
prizes. Tables were set up for 6 to 8 guests. Several of our
chapter alumni attended and the great surprise was President
Obama (the tall-silent type)…so many photographs were taken
to the delight of hosts and guests! Contributing committee
members included Joan Banks, Blanca Torres, Jean Hunton, Wanda Hill, along with President Castillo and VP
Horad.
As exciting as our Cluster meeting was we had the pleasure of
inducting a new Drifter sister. At our June meeting we welcomed Mrs. Edyth Harris of Ft. Washington, Md. She and her
husband are entrepreneurs owning a charter and tour motor
coach company. We thank Drifter Peggy Corum of the Montclair chapter for referring her to us. Drifter Harris recently retired from Verizon. We look forward to many years of service

traveled to Nassau, Freeport, Bahamas on a seven day cruise. In
addition to this trip Isabella will go to California for five days
with her parents. In the fall little Miss Kindling, Isabella will

SOCIAL & CIVIC EVENT
The Raleigh Chapter of Drifters, Inc. decided to concentrate their collective efforts on bringing sunshine into the life of
a dear Drifter sister, Gloria Stroud Smith. Gloria is fighting a
courageous battle with cancer and needs all of our prayers, support and good wishes. To cheer her these past couple of years,
the Raleigh Drifters have showered her with cheer baskets,
monetary gifts, cards, calls and visits. The group will continue
to find ways to lift her spirits and let her know that although she
is absent from the meetings, she is never absent from their
hearts.
Drifter Marjorie Person has a list of older people she communicates with daily who are in their 80’s and 90’s.

During 2009, the Raleigh Chapter of Drifters, Inc., decided to support a community project. This project was developed by a former member, Ruby Dunston Green who authored
her first book in 2008, Ruby’s Miraculous Journey. All proceeds from the book will be donated to assist disadvantaged senior citizens with prescription medications. Many people in this
age group find it extremely difficult to afford medication and
food. The Emergency Prescription Medication Fund was implemented in January, 2009 with two (2) community non-profits.
Drifter Jean Preyar represents the chapter in Durham, NC for
groups sponsoring fundraising events for those in need economically.
The Raleigh Drifters endorsed this project to help make a difference in people’s lives.

Ruby Dunston Green was a dedicated and devoted Drifter for
over twenty (20) years until a major illness forced her to relinquish her membership. Ruby also served two terms on the National Drifters, Inc. Board and was chairperson of Raleigh’s first

Ruby’s Miraculous Journey is not an autobiography, but it
provides glimpses of her life. The cost of the book is $15.00 and
it can be purchased and ordered through the following website:

A Diamond Jubilee Birthday celebration honoring Richmond
Driftwood John H. Lee was hosted by Drifter Constance
Brown, John's brother, Dr. Ralph N. Lee and Marinda Brown on
24 January 2009. Among the guests were John's music colleagues and his bowling team. The theme for the evening was a
modified version of"Belsnickling", an old Custom with roots in
Germany which is similar to our Celebration of Halloween.
Formerly, guests dressed in disguises on Christmas Eve and traveled from house to house where they received refreshments
once they were identified. John's guests came disguised as wellknown characters in the field of the arts and performed a musical
selection either a vocal, a dance, or an instrumental, a dramatization or a poem.. John highlighted the evening disguised as Billy
Taylor, the pianist as he really put on a show. Refreshments
included delectable German, Italian, and American cuisine and
beverages. The evening ended with a Casino Night featuring
Black Jack and Pokeno as well a good music and dancing. What

opening with "The Lord's Prayer." Later in the evening, Amahl
artistically rendered "Terpetuum Mobile by Novacek. Amahl is

church musicians, music supervisors, ministers of music, as well

the quality and high standards of music in the Church and in
other fields.

At our 52nd National Convention in Norfolk, Virginia in August, 2008, I experienced one of the most challenging situations in my life. The evening of the day I arrived, I received a
telephone call from my husband, Al, in Richmond. He informed
me that our only grandson, 4-year old Logan Macklin, had been
rushed to the hospital because he could not be aroused from his
sleep. My heart sank and I decided it was time for me to immediately return home. The way my Drifter Sisters gathered
around to support me with their love and prayers, enabled me to
summon up the strength and courage to drive home the next
morning and to arrive safely at the hospital in a surprisingly good
state of mental health. Upon arriving home I learned that Logan
had been diagnosed with a brain tumor and emergency surgery
was in progress to save his life. I contacted my good friend and
Drifter Sister Constance Brown and passed onto her whatever
limited information I had. She passed this information onto our
National President, Irene Eskridge, who in turn asked the
entire group of wonderful ladies to pray for us which they sincerely did. I felt the Drifter Prayer Line and was informed that
Logan's surgery was successful as well as his prognosis. There is
a God! I will be eternally grateful and indebted to all of my
Drifter Sisters for helping me during this miracle. My Driftwood, AI, my son and his wife, Rodney and Stacia my granddaughter, (Logan's sister) Natalie, along with the maternal
grandparents join me in thanking all of you and we ask God's
continued blessings upon you and yours.

By LUZ LAZO
RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER
When Jerry Martin returned from his one year of service
in Vietnam, he had lost several friends at war. But he also
had lost friends at home, he said.
"We had anti-war people spitting on you, calling you
names, "the veteran and Colonial Heights resident recalled yesterday. "I didn't agree with the war, either, but
you still got to do your duty."
Martin rarely talked about what he went through until recently, when he joined Band of Brothers, a group of
mostly Vietnam Combat veterans who visit the McGuire
Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
The veterans, many dealing with post-traumatic stress
disorder, have been meeting each week for the past four
years. Yesterday, they celebrated their first family picnic
at American Legion Post 137, on Sunlight Avenue off
Broad Rock Boulevard.
There with his wife, Laura, Martin talked openly about his
war experience. Dozens of other veterans from the area
did the same. They shared photos of comrades who died
in war and talked about their frustrations when they got

ginia National Guard based in West Point.
"It was a lot different from when we came back. There's a
lot of stuff now. It is just about the soldiers taking advantage of whars being offered," he said. "When my father
came back, they had nothing."
Band of Brothers has become a social support group for
many veterans, said Lawrence M. Davis, one of the founders and a Marine Corps veteran. During the weekly sessions, participants learn to deal with issues such as anxiety and depression, he said.
Contact Luz Lazo at (804) 649-6058 or

The group, which operates without any government funding, has about 70 members, Davis said.

Joel Blum, a psychiatrist in Mental Health Services at
McGuire, said the group has helped the soldiers heal from
their physical and psychological injuries.
"The social support is so important. For years the Vietnam
veterans would not even come to the VA. They felt estranged," Blum said. Although they were serving their
country, "they didn't come back as heroes.... This is a war
that was not won."
Band of Brothers members hope the support will expand
to a new generation of soldiers coming back from Iraq
and Afghanistan, whether by guiding them on how to get
help from Veterans Affairs or helping them find other
support groups, Davis said.
"We are here to help them so they don't have to walk
through what we had to walk through," he said.
Byron Ferrell, who in July came home from his second
tour in Iraq, now calls himself an unofficial member of
Band of Brothers. Through the group, he has met other
servicemen, he said.
The group has been particularly valuable to his father,
Cleavester Ferrell Sr., a Vietnam veteran.
Soldiers today have more support groups than when his
father came back from war, said the younger Ferrell, who

INVOLVEMENT
The South Bend Chapter started the year off with our Founder’s
Day celebration at the Trio’s Jazz Bar and Restaurant. Many of
our cluster chapters attended the event. The Indianapolis Chapter was recognized for being the founding chapter for South
Bend. We were delighted and inspired by the words of educator
Mrs. Alma Powell. We were also entertained by mother and
daughter Mrs. Janice Haygood and Andrianna Haygood who
sang and praised danced, respectively. A great time was had by
all in attendance.
Our holiday dance was held in December, 2008, at the Riverside
Terrace in Mishawaka, Indiana. The chairpersons for the dance
were Drifters Leslie Wesley and Toni Canady. They did a wonderful job organizing this well attended event. The South Bend
Drifters and Driftwoods along with their guest jammed the night
away.
The South Bend Chapter is busy preparing for the annual Senior
Citizen luncheon which is chaired by Drifter Marylee Lue. The
senior citizens are treated to lunch at one of our fine local establishments.
Our Human Development Co-Chairpersons Drifters Josie
Buchanon and Mariejo Bradford have kept us busy in our community and abroad. In September, we donated toiletries to St.
Margaret’s House which is a women shelter. In October, we
donated toiletries to the Men and Family Shelter at the Hope
Rescue Mission. In November, Drifter Josie Buchanon gave us a
great idea to help support our troops. Through Troy’s Place,
which is a commissary located in Iraq, soldiers can receive goodies sent from home. Our chapter sent over items like candy,
Crystal Light Singles, pop tarts, and gum. In December, we
donated can foods to the local food bank sponsored by Feed the
Needy. As 2009 began we donated boxes of Kleenex to the
local hospice center. In February, we helped the local Ronald
McDonald House with a pop tab donation. In March and April
we found ourselves helping out the local humane society with a
pet food donation.
Spring 2009 found the South Bend Drifters busy preparing for
the Annual Blanche Hardin Memorial Fashion Show. The fashion was held at the Holiday Inn in downtown South Bend. This
event was well attended and had some male models as participants.
In 2008 the South Bend Chapter awarded three deserving young
ladies scholarships and/or book vouchers to further their education. These young ladies have been very active in their schools,
community, and their own churches. We congratulate these
young ladies on a job well done.
The South Bend Drifters and Driftwoods are busy preparing for
the 2010 convention. We are all excited and look forward to
seeing all of you in August 2010. We will be handling all of the
Drifter business in the day and socializing at night.
SOCIAL & CIVIC EVENT
Drifter Josie & Driftwood Carl Buchanon has been members since June 2000. She wanted to become a Drifter because
she wanted to meet positive women in the area. One of her
favorite aspects of Drifterdom is that her sisters step up to the
challenges at hand. If she had one word to describe her and being a Drifter that word would be “exciting”. Drifter Josie is excited about the 2010 Convention because she can’t wait to see
everyone here in South Bend. The Buchanon household is very
proud of their sons, Junior Michigan Track and Field Big 10 IM
400 Hurdler Carl II who captured the championship this spring.
He also won the regional championship in the IM400 Hurdles
and became a qualifier to the National Collegiate Meet in Alabama. Senior Clay High School student Jarrod will be competing in the Indiana Boys Regional in the 110 Hurdles, 300 Hurdles (Jarrod placed 3rd) and 4 X 100 relay. The Buchanon’s also
welcomed new granddaughter Adriana along with big sister La’
Nya.

the Founder’s Day Luncheon for being a charter member. She
became a Drifter through the efforts of Bernice Ware who was
contacted by the Indianapolis Chapter to start a chapter here in
South Bend. In the beginning the Drifters were a social organization but over the years it has progressed to a more civically
grounded organization. Drifter Della is very excited about hosting the convention here in South Bend. Committed is the only
word to describe Drifter Della Luten. Della spends time visiting
the sick and shut-in and working with the church deaconesses.

church. Driftwood Thom serves on the Trustee’s Ministry. The
Lue’s are excited about the convention coming to South Bend.

Drifter Maymie & Driftwood Tom Taylor has been members for 48 years. Drifter Maymie joined the organization because it was a good social club that did great work in the community. All of the women in the club were good friends and
enjoyed socializing with one another. Drifter Maymie can best
be described the words dynamic woman. Drifter Maymie reminds us that the idea of Driftwoods and children attending the
convention was first thought of by the South Bend Drifters many
years ago and those two groups have been strongly represented
at the conventions ever since. It was also proposed by South
Bend Chapter to extend the convention from the Friday-Sunday
event in October to a longer convention whereas husbands and
children could attend activities while the Drifters were busy at
work. Maymie volunteered with the Church United Women’s
Organization and worked on the Obama campaign.

Drifter Leslie & Driftwood Derrick has been members for
12 years. Drifter Leslie joined because she was excited about
the community involvement that the Drifters were doing. One
statement that describes Leslie and being a Drifter is “committed
to the cause”. Drifter Leslie is excited about the convention
coming to South Bend because she wants to show you South
Bend instead of telling you about South Bend. Drifter Leslie is a
sustaining alumni member of the Junior League of South Bend.
Driftwood Derrick was placed on the Silver Anniversary Hall of
Fame Basketball Team for the state of Indiana in March 2009.
Only a few select basketball players had the pleasure to receive
this honor. Taylor completed her elementary school career with
no absences at school as did both of her bothers, Derrick, Jr. and
Blake. In the upcoming school, year Taylor and Blake will be
attending the academies for the gifted and talented students here
in South Bend. Leslie volunteers for the VERITAS Co-operative
Group (the academy her children attend), a member of the Junior League and the LINKS, Inc.
______________________________________________
Drifter Mattie & Driftwood Dalian Taylor has been members for 6 years. Drifter Mattie joined because she was impressed with the work that the Drifters were doing in the community. She also likes the fact that they are interested in the
seniors and children of our community. One word that would
describe Mattie and being a Drifter is activism. Drifter Mattie
loves the sisterhood connection that she feels with her Drifter
sisters. She is excited about the convention coming to South
Bend. Congratulations are in order for Drifter Mattie who
graduated in May from Bethel College with a degree in Business
Management Administration and on the upcoming arrival of her
new grandchild.
______________________________________________
Drifter Mariejo & Driftwood Archie Bradford has been
members for over 25 years. Drifter Mariejo joined the organization for its social attractiveness and being able to social with your
husband. She has always had fun in the organization. The Bradford’s welcomed a new addition to their family, grandson Zachary Daniel. They look forwarded to seeing all of you here in
South Bend in 2010.
______________________________________________
Drifter Sonya Davis has been a member for two years. She
joined the organization because she was impressed with the caliber of woman that was part of the organization and she wanted
to be active in her community. The sisterhood that Sonya feels
from her organization is powerful and one full of emotion. She
cried when during the induction ceremony. One word that describes Sonya and being a Drifter is determined. Drifter Sonya is
excited about the 2010 convention because she cannot wait to
show off her fair city.
______________________________________________
Drifter Irene Eskridge has been a member 20 years. We
enjoy having the National President in our chapter. She joined
the organization because she was impressed with the way the
women carried themselves and for the work they were doing in
the community. One word that describes Irene with respect to
being a Drifter is committed. That aspect is visible as Drifter
Irene is our current National President and her leadership as
enabled our organization to experience growth in new chapters.
Drifter Irene is excited about the 2010 convention because she
cannot wait until she can entertain her Drifter sisters. Irene
volunteers her time to mentor 2 teenagers, to participate on the
educational committee and revival program at her church.
______________________________________________
Drifter Karla Riley has been a member for six years. She is in
charge of many of the decorations that we have at our events
around the South Bend Area. We congratulate Karla on her
new home. Karla is the treasurer of the club as well as the treasurer and a trustee at the Pilgrim Baptist Church. She is also one
of the sponsors for Black History Program at her church.

Purdue Cooperative Extension-our local 4-H organizers. She
and her husband are faithful members of Olivet AME Church

She also found time to work on the Obama campaign. Driftwood Don continues to thrive as an insurance agent and they
will celebrate their 38th anniversary in November. They are
very proud of their grandson who graduated from the 8th grade
and look forward to their granddaughter starting kindergarten
this fall.

Drifter Rose Moore has been a member since June of 1970
and was in regular attendance at the conventions. She has not

organization the included the husbands. She is a member of
Sweet Home Missionary where she serves as an usher and President of the Women’s Ministry.

Drifter Toni Cannady has been a member for four years and
she is the Vice-President of the local chapter. She joined the

The Tallahassee Drifters continued their relationship with Hope
[Homeless] Community. Hope Community is a long term (six
months) living situation for homeless families, men and women.

NORFOLK WAVES
by Yvonne H. Brown
For several years, the Norfolk Drifters had been eagerly" Waiting
to Exhale" while they planned to host the annual Drifter's Convention, held in Norfolk, Virginia at the beautiful Waterside Sheraton Hotel in August 2008. Well. ...finally, we exhaled our efforts for a successful convention, and celebrated from August to
January. We truly enjoyed "Cruising with the Drifters" for our
National Drifter Family. We applaud all the Norfolk Drifters for
a splendid job done, and it has been decided that "Most Valuable
Player" awards are in order for President Wivona Ward and
Gloria Adderly, our Now Black Woman, and Driftwood Bill
Goines. We are now anxiously planning and packing for our
pilgrimage to the New York Drifter's Convention.
Again this year, in keeping with our theme, "Strengthening the
Family to Build Better Communities: Save Our Children and Assist Our
Seniors," the Norfolk Drifters continue to maintain our relationship with EDMARC an organization for terminally ill children
and the Battered Women's shelter. Our annual donation was
made to the EDMARC organization, on which Drifter Mary
Bullock serves on the board.
Drifter Sister, Rowena Wilson, a professor at Norfolk State
University, is the Co-Editor of the Journal of Public Child Welfare which is published by Taylor & Francis. The Journal features
articles on foster care, adoption and a variety of services and
issues pertaining to children involved in the Child Welfare System. Books are also reviewed in the Journal and practitioners
submit short position papers. If you would like more information on how to submit to the journal, feel free to contact Drifter
Rowena at Norfolk State University.
We continue to assist our seniors in the community, and feed
the hungry through donations of Thanksgiving and Christmas
baskets.
Twenty-five beautifully decorated Easter baskets filled with
goodies and educational materials were delivered by Drifter
Sisters Thelma Hardy and Joann Watson to the children at the
YWCA Battered Women's Shelter.
The Norfolk Drifter Sisters held a Post- Christmas dinner party,
for family and friends, at the Holiday lnn Select as part of our
post-convention celebration. What a wonderful way to end a
very eventful year.
In March, our Sisters attended the fantastic 2009 "Showers of
Love" Founders Day Luncheon held in Colonial Williamsburg,
Virginia. The event was hosted by the Petersburg Chapter. The
Norfolk Chapter will host the 2010 Founder's Day luncheon and
we would love for all to attend.
Congratulations to Drifter Sister Elizabeth "Doll" sharp, also
known as "Auntie" for being honored as the" 2009 Sister of the
Year" by the "Sisters Can We Talk" Women's Fellowship Group
under the ministry of Full Gospel Deliverance Church of God.
Ladies of the group, founded over ten years ago, fulfill their
Christian ministry by reaching out to others to form bonding
Christian Fellowships, and to renew the commitment of accountability in being "our sister's keeper". Drifter Sister Doll is
active in many charitable organizations. She is always willing to
help and be a blessing to others. You will often hear her say, "if1
can help somebody as 1pass along, Ihen my living will nol be in vain."
Doll, keep up the good work! We love you and are very proud
of your dedicated and unselfish Christian deeds.
Our chapter president, Drifter Wivona Ward serves as vicepresident of the Senior of Norfolk. She's done a magnificent job
serving in that capacity.
Drifter Carolyn Hayes, has sailed on the Tom Joyner Fantastic
Voyage for the past eleven years. Each year it becomes more
enjoyable.
Drifter Pat Wise Green had a fabulous 65th Birthday Celebration at her home. She actually had a circus under the "Big Top,"
right in her own back yard. That's right, a Circus. It was a lot of
fun and unique event.
Congratulations to Driftwood Tyrone Adderly, who was recently inducted into the U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Beret)
Distinguished Member of the Regiment Hall of Fame. Driftwood Tyrone and Drifter Sister Gloria are exceedingly proud of
their grandson, Splinter Xzavier Howard who attended the
Presidential Inauguration Ball of our first African American
President Barack Obama. Xzavier is a student in the National
Leadership Program.
