March,2015 - Citrus Park
March 2015 39th Annual Parade – Saturday, March 14, 2015 The 39th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, to be held on Saturday, March 14th, 2015 in Downtown Naples. Typical Traditions & Customs of St Patrick’s Day Thirty-nine years ago a group of fun-loving Neapolitan’s got together and decided to have a parade to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. It is now the largest privately-funded Parade in the state. It draws over 40,000 people to downtown Naples each year to celebrate Irish heritage and Irish culture in America. Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ MyCitrusPark and get updates to all of our events and important information. www.mycitruspark.com The wearing of the green on St Patrick’s Day Many people wear something green on St Patrick ’s Day which is known in the U.S. and other countries as wearing of the green. Usually people would wear green to show their Irish heritage & culture on the day that everyone’s Irish but in Ireland the wearing of the green doesn’t really exist, well in terms of celebrating their culture. However, they do wear Shamrocks to symbolize the teaching of the holy trinity by St Patrick. A small bunch of Shamrocks would be pinned to the breast of their outer coats. The drinking of green beer Spring Forward Daylight Savings March 8th In Ireland you would be hard pushed to find a pub that served green beer and actual fact this is not a typical tradition of Ireland but is that of the U.S. & Canada. Some places in Ireland, such as Dublin, may have a few pubs that will serve green beer but for the most part it’s not something we generally do. Did you know that pubs in Ireland had to remain shut for St Patrick’s Day? It wasn’t until the late 1970’s the Irish law permitted pubs to open their doors on March 17th. www.MyCitrusPark.com Information Activities Office Security Department Please stop by the Activities Office to receive a copy of our daily Activity Schedule. Come to a complete Stop, and enter the lane slower. This will give the bar code reader a better chance to scan your barcode. Podiatry Services Citrus Park Storage Compound Nancy Russell has recently joined Dr Pham and Dr Swift (Podiatrists) owners of Florida Regional Foot and Ankle Specialists as Director of Operations. The Doctors will be opening their new office in Bonita Springs. Nancy has provided Wellness BP clinics to our community for several years. Podiatry clinics will continue at our park at leaset once a month so watch for sign up sheets posting dates and times. During the podiatry clinics Nancy will be happy to do your BP as time permits. For any questions please contact Nancy Russell at 239-209-2772. She looks forward to her continued service to our park residence. The electronic keypad has been hit more than once with lightning this summer causing the gate to remain inoperable. Because of this costly, continuing problem, we have purchased a totally new system that will require a REMOTE to open the gate for entry. The cost of each remote will be $40.00. This will be refunded whenever you no longer need storage usage. All storage users must check with Bill Farmer or Larry Thompson upon arriving to purchase their REMOTE. Much research has been done with other communities and a remote system seems to be the most reliable. The compound office will be open every Tuesday from 3 PM – 5PM starting Nov 5, 2014. Work days will be during those hours. Contact numbers: Bill Farmer 239-273-6308 Larry Thompson 239-293-4467 Jerry Zeider alternate 765-513-4371 Mailroom: Please remember to check with the Mailroom BEFORE you depart for the season to make sure you have fowardeing lables. Wasn’t our music man, Rodd Snook, terrific? He’s a man with a heart. During March and April, we will sell luminaria to honor or to remember loved ones who have fought battles against cancer and/or are survivors. Those will illuminate the 9 p.m. memorial walk at the Relay for Life 2015 which will be held in the field behind the A-frame on the corner of Beach Road and Route #41, on April 11th. The Sassy Survivors have championed the project of selling luminaria for the past 2 years. We will be at pancake breakfasts, on the Rec. Hall porch and in our neighborhoods selling luminaria and registering cancer survivors. Look for the Sassy Survivors in our purple shirts. March 21st will find the purple shirts at the CH bar serving delicious home-baked goodies and hot beverages. We know you enjoy our coffee house and we enjoy visiting with you as you sup a cup of goodness. Kathy will have a table where luminaria will be sold, also. During the first week of March, we will be hosting lunches and dinners at the Coconut Point California Pizza Kitchen where you may show your colorful invitation to your server and 20% of your check will be donated to the Sassy Survivors’ account at the American Cancer Society. CPK has a wide variety of cuisine including delicious pizzas. Ginny has water bottles into which you can put loose change. Remember, your change might bring about great changes in the lives of those battling the Big C. They will be at the tables where luminaria are displayed. Thank you for your encouragement and support. We are expressing the appreciation of those who will benefit from your generosity. Please join us at the Sassy Survivors’ kiosk at the Relay for Life on April 11th and join us as we work to give cancer patients HOPE. The decades will unfold with songs like “The Tennessee Waltz”, “Yankee Doodle”, “Making Whoopie”, “Blowing in the Wind”, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” , and the dance troupe will tap, disco, stroll and stomp to well-known tunes. Tickets are $5.00. The Gray Nineties appreciates all those who attended the Sock Hop in January and enjoyed the fun of dance contests, hula-hooping and the music of the 50’s and 60’s. This was part one of our “memories” package. The schools felt that a memory stick was more useful than the backpacks, so they were purchased for the children. The committee had money left over and kindly donation $80 to the computer Club. The Computer Club would liketo thank the Teach Committee. The club is still looking for suggestions for the 2015 – 2016 seasons. If you have any suggestions you can go to the web site. www.citrusparkcc.com SHUFFLEBOARD NEWS Many new players have joined the Club this winter season. We hope they continue and have fun playing. We welcome more people wishing to play the FUN game. On Monday, we play doubles and on Wednesday we play singles. Many thanks to all the people that helped to get things done for our Mardi Gras Parade entry. Many thanks to those who participated in the parade. We hope it was a great fun day for all! Club members remember to save Tuesday, March 24, 2015 for the Shuffleboard Banquet being held at the Clubhouse. Time and menu will be announced at a later date. Guests are welcome to attend. In our February board meeting, the election of officers was held. The results are : President, Frank Elmquist , First vice president: Doris Bell, Second vice president: Kathy McCarthy, Treasurer: Nate Jones, and Secretary: Beverly McKenzie. Thanks to these volunteers who have agreed to do that “little extra.” We have had a request that residents not drive their golf carts in the swales behind our units because there have been several water breaks. Also, once again we need to remind our residents to read the instructions concerning the bulk disposal area. Many of you are putting items there that should be placed in the compactors. The Hamlin Association wants to salute the volunteers who championed the administration to make a pickleball court. It is really thanks to them that this new and popular sport has been made available to our residents. It is hard to believe that it is already March. By the time the next newsletter is printed many of the activities will be winding down and residents will be starting to head back north. We hope that this season in Citrus Park has met with all your expectations and that we, the Hamlin Association, have been able to add to your positive experiences. Please continue to let us know areas that we may be of assistance to you.
