Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan The Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan was founded in November 1975 by a group of individuals with the desire to protect and preserve the Ford Mustang as one of the most attractive and fun filled cars ever made available. We are enthusiasts of all ages with a love affair of the many generations of America’s Premiere Pony Car. Whether it’s a coupe, convertible or fastback from 1964 ½ to the new 2005 GT or the 2007 Cobra, we love them all. The mission of club members is to collect, restore and preserve the history of the Mustang along with the stories of the people and the roles that they played in making this one of the great cars of the 20th Century. Although ownership is not a requirement for membership, your enthusiasm, expertise and and/or love of the automobile are most welcome. Many of our club members own one or more Mustangs in varying body styles, models and years. Club members are always exchanging information, providing sources for parts, literature and helpful hints for restoring or maintaining their Mustangs. Our members are a diverse group of individuals, located throughout Southeastern Michigan and all share a great appreciation for the Ford Mustang. Our general membership meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Our monthly newsletter, The Accelerator, provides the members with reports on club activities, technical information, advertisements and business service locations and more. Some club activities include car shows, picnics, sporting events, cruise nights and technical sessions. Membership dues for MOCSEM are $30.00 USD per year; [for ALL MOCSEM members] Using the application from the website send payment to: MOCSEM P.O. Page 3 Up Coming Social Events Social Director’s (Jenny Root ) Message: Hi everyone- We had a great time at October’s first 2 events – the Road Rally and the annual Hayride. There were 31 people on 9 teams running around town solving clues and gathering information during the road rally, and even though I messed up writing the second part of the first clue, everyone said they had a lot of fun and we all ended up at the right place – Logan’s. Two of the teams went to the wrong place for the first stop, but once thy figured out where they should be and went there, they were the only ones that got the right answers!! The BarnesArmstrong team won this time. Next up was the hayride and for the first time in my personal experience, the weather was warm enough that no one had to wear winter coats, hats, and gloves – but the trade-off was having to deal with the mosquitoes. Once the sun started to set and the temps started to drop, though, they disappeared and everyone was able to enjoy the tons-of-food potluck around the bonfire. Thanks to everyone for their food and drink contributions. Kevin Carr made a fabulous, specially designed cake just for the event, complete with hay wagon pulled by 2 ‘ponies’ (Mustang cars!), ‘ponies’ in a corral being checked out by horses, a bonfire, and the MOCSEM logo – it looked as great as it tasted. Thank you, Kevin! He has already agreed to make a cake for the December membership meeting and Santa party, and has ideas for the design – can’t wait to see it. October finished out with a fall color cruise, the last cruise-in at Ashley’s for the season, and the Appreciation Dinner, all of which took place after this writing, so I’ll have to tell those of you who missed them how they went in next months issue. November’s membership meeting is the last chance for anyone to sign up children for the Santa party at the December membership meeting. If you haven’t been able to be at a meeting, plan on being at the December one, and would like to have children, grandchildren, etc. be at the Santa party and receive a gift from Santa, call me to get the children on the list. We will be shopping for the gifts at the end of November and will need to know by the 22nd at the latest. We will need your name, their name(s) and age(s), and some ideas. Moving into December, you still have until December 5th to sign up for the adults-only Christmas party on the 13th. It will be at Montana’s, which is at 34290 Ford Road, off Wildwood, in Westland. The cost is $20 per person, with a cash bar. If you wish to participate in the gift exchange, bring a wrapped gift with you to the party. Everyone that brings a gift will go home with one. We are planning on having a D.J. at the party this time so we can do some dancing after the meal and gift exchange. It sounds like it’ll be as good a time as usual. As some of you may know, I won’t be the Social Director for 2009, so I have nothing planned for the club after December. That will be up to the new person. I’m confident that the fun will continue and I look forward to joining in on it with all of you. HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE NEXT EVENT! The Accelerator Neil’s Wheels Wow, it’s hard to believe that the show was almost 3 months ago. It comes at us so fast and leaves just as quickly. While working on this special edition of the Accelerator, it is obvious that another car season has quickly wound down. The days are shorter, kids are back at school, we turn on the heat more often, and many of us are in the process of putting our Ponies away. By this time in November, the election will be over and TV will be returning to normal. Hopefully this special newsletter issue helps us all look back and remember another great Mustang Memories. This year’s show will be remembered for years to come, with the best attendance and registration numbers of any show we have put on since the 1998 MCA National in Dearborn. Each year I look back at the previous year’s numbers and most all have grown at a surprising rate. Mustang Memories is recognized nationally, receiving write-ups in magazines, newspapers, websites, and more. Our show is an institution that people mark on their calendars, tell their friends, and even travel from long distance to attend. The high gas prices and weak local economy did little to slow us down. Let’s look at the numbers: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Over 180 pre-registered show cars (compared to 165 last year) 436 registered show cars (compared to 365 the last 2 years) 54 swap spaces and 25 cars for sale (compared to 42 spaces and 11 cars) Over 2200 paid spectators through the gate (500 more than 2007 and over 1000 more than 2006!) Most of our past major sponsors supported us once again. Club members worked hard to get trophy sponsors and many donated money themselves. We had the largest number of volunteer workers sign up to work the show. New sponsors such as Ford Racing, Pypes Exhaust, and E-Tools had onsite displays. JDRF raised over $600 by raffling a Mustang Power Car donated by MOCSEM and selling merchandise. Many show participants sent emails complimenting the event and recognizing the efforts of the show volunteers. Judges from the Mustang Club of Mid-Michigan helped by judging the MOCSEM cars. The goody bags were very full (and heavy) and we had a great time at the stuffing party. Bonus gifts were given at registration to people who pre-registered. We had great weather in the morning for the first time in 3 years. A couple afternoon showers didn’t spoil the day. Twenty-five new members joined MOCSEM by taking advantage of the day-of-show discount. THE TROPHY PRESENTATION STARTED AND ENDED ON TIME!!!!!!!!!!! Page 4 By all possible measures, we had a fantastic day. This was despite the cost of gas, the shrinking local population, and economic conditions. People made a point to attend our show even if they didn’t go to any other shows all year. The quality of the show cars was tremendous which made the job of picking winners for the “Best Of” trophies very difficult. I truly believe that Mustang Memories is the best one-day Mustang and All Ford event anywhere; and we have had many people tell us it is better than most national MCA events. I couldn’t have imagined how quickly the show has grown in recent years. Thanks to the generosity and hard work of our members and sponsors, the future growth of Mustang Memories is assured. Everyone involved with Mustang Memories has much to be proud of. Phil Smith, Mike Rey and I spent countless hours in the months leading up to the show to determine the layout, gain sponsorships, organize workers, and make the necessary arrangements to ensure the success of the show. Other members also had major roles in various aspects of the show. And of course the show depends on the numerous club volunteers during the weekend from Saturday morning setup to final cleanup on Sunday. Mustang Memories is truly a collective effort and we should all take the time to appreciate the collective success. Please make sure you thank some of our many sponsors whenever you get the opportunity. There would be no Mustang Memories without their generosity and our show is special due to their participation. There is no other event that brings more club members together at one time than Mustang Memories. The many aspects that make MOCSEM special were on display all day and many people took notice. Numerous guests made the point to let me know how friendly they were treated and made to feel comfortable. PEOPLE make the difference, and I hope all of you are proud of your club involvement and look forward to participating in our upcoming club events. PRESIDENT: The election ballots will be mailed early if the Mustang Memories edition of the newsletter is not ready Starting in January, the newsletter will be primarily on-line; we will still print for the sponsors, and we can still print for those who don’t have internet access or who have special circumstances With the current economic climate, we need to cut the cost of mailing, just in case we lose sponsors, and Ken’s job would be immensely easier if we could get our printing cut in half More money will allow the club to pay for more events like Christmas dinners, hayrides, etc. Question: Can we give out newsletters to those at the meeting and mail the rest? This does not cut down on the printing Craig, the web master, will come probably in November and show us how to get the newsletter off the web; it will be available about the same time each month; Bill said he can do e-mail reminders when it’s available There will be info in the newsletter to contact Neil or Ken if you still want a paper copy Question: Can we get a reduction in dues? We will probably not reduce dues. The club will be able to pay for more events MEMBERSHIP: 325 current members, 3 renewals due 2010 Mustang Special Reveal Event for MOCSEM on Nov 18th As mentioned by Fritz Wilke at our October General Meeting, Ford Motor Company has contacted MOCSEM to be one of only ten MCA regional clubs to host a satellite simulcast of the debut of the 2010 Mustang at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The reveal will be at 10pm (I know that is a little late for some of us) due to the 3 hr time difference between Michigan and California. The likely location for the simulcast will be the AMC Livonia 20 theatres at 19500 Haggerty Road near Seven Mile in Livonia. This was the only location option available located nearby to much of our membership. Ford will be setting up an online reservation system for the event, and details will be on the MOCSEM website. If you do not have internet access and would like to attend, please call Neil Holcomb at 734-459-4704 and I will make arrangements to get you on the reservation list. MOCSEM is privileged to be asked by Ford to host such a special event. I am also told there will be a commemorative gift for everyone who attends. Don’t miss out! The Accelerator MOCSEM Newsletter Publication Changes beginning in January 2009 As discussed at the October General Meeting, some difficult decisions need to be made regarding the editor workload and the escalating cost of newsletter publication. Currently our editor, Ken Janus, is not only editing but also printing and mailing the newsletters from his home. Even with the reduced cost provided by this approach, newsletter costs are running approximately $5000-$6000 annually. While we all agree that we love the quality and content of the newsletter, we must find a way to lower these costs given the other current and future budgetary strains we expect the club to experience due to the local economy. Member feedback at the October meeting showed that an overwhelming majority was in favor of receiving the newsletter online. The board feels the best way to address the cost issue is to maintain newsletter quality while reducing printing and mailing costs. This can be accomplished by taking advantage of our website and email to distribute the newsletter online to all members who have an email address and computer access. This approach will provide a significant reduction in printing and mailing costs. We will still print enough newsletters to send to sponsors and provide to members who are unable to access the newsletter by computer. Anyone printing the newsletter from their own computer will have the choice to print the entire issue in color and further enjoy the quality of the publication. You can also choose to only print the pages of interest so there is less wasted paper. Online newsletters can also contain additional material when needed with out incurring added postage costs. When each new online newsletter becomes available, members with email addresses on file will be forwarded an email reminder with a link to the latest issue. The board understands that the club members will expect the cost savings to be used for the club and we completely agree. The plan will be to use the savings to enhance club activities such as providing food at more events, supplementing the cost of some events to make things more affordable to attendees, etc. We will have a better idea of the budget impact after the first year of our plan. Anyone who wishes to continue receiving the Accelerator by mail due to lack of computer or printer access, please contact Ken Janus (information inside the front cover) and we will make arrangements to mail or deliver a copy to you. We know that this is a major change for the club, but this approach allows us to realize cost savings without eliminating or reducing the quality of a service we already provide. MOCSEM Fall Color Cruise – Great Time had by All We had a great turnout and fantastic weather for the MOCSEM Fall Color Cruise on October 18th. Over 35 cars and about 60 members and guests participated in the almost 100 mile cruise which proved to be very enjoyable and thankfully uneventful. The group met in the morning in Plymouth and drove to the Yankee Air Museum where Bob Paul gave an informative tour of the hanger and all three of their collection of flying World War II aircraft. The group got up-close looks at the B-24, B-17, and the C-47 with wonderful picture opportunities and peaks inside. We also got to see some of the restoration work going on including a World War I Spad and the shell of another B-24. Many members of the Yankee Air Museum were on hand to answer questions and share interesting stories. Thanks again to Bob for a wonderful tour. Page 7 The group left Willow Run and drove the longest stretch of the trip to the Zukey Lake Tavern in Pickney. Despite having the lead car (Bob Paul) turning left (instead of right) on Pontiac Trail and having 18 cars follow him, the group eventually made it to the restaurant where we had just enough chairs in the reserved room for everyone. Special thanks go to Gary Brewer who worked out the reservations and directions to the restaurant. We got there about an hour late but they were still able to accommodate us and provide good service. Based on time, the group decided to skip the ice cream part of the trip and continue to the Dexter Cider Mill for cider and donuts. Gary Brewer again helped out with a slight route change and called ahead to the mill to determine a good parking place for the group. When we arrived at the mill we parked down a drive along the railroad track which was easy walking distance to the mill. We actually waiting longer in the line to get inside as the mill was very busy on this beautiful fall day. After picking out our favorite apple treats, donuts, and size of cider container the group hung around eating and sharing stories of the day. The remaining group eventually got back to our cars and headed back to home on various routes. Based on the participation and success of the Fall Cruise, I look forward to planning a similar Spring Cruise next year. Check out the website for some great pictures from the day. Mustang Memories 2008 “The Best one Yet” Well to say the show was a Huge success is an understatement! It was simply amazing! As Show Chairman, I am proud to report that we had 436 registered cars on the grounds, and over 2200 people through the gate. Huge Sponsor Displays by MRT, CDC, Ford Racing, Pypes Exhaust, Livernois Motorsports,E-Tools,Oval Repair, etc. Also had record numbers in the Swap Meet and Car Corral. The Product raffle was better than ever! Over $10,000 worth of Prizes! We most certainly have the number one annual Mustang show in the Mid West Region! I mean our numbers even beat the Buckeye National Mustang show this summer! And that was a National! I would like to Thank everyone who helped out in anyway with the show, whether you helped with setup, parking, registration, membership, merchandise, raffle, swap, etc. It was because of our great team effort as a club that the show was such a success. So thank you all again! And a special thank you, to Neil Holcomb,Phil Smith,& Ken Janus for really pulling everything together with me starting with our new show logo for Mustang Memories which first appeared on our show flyer back in March. There was a lot of stuff to do behind the scenes, but as usual we always get it done. We did catch a bit of rain and wind during trophy presentations, but trophies were on time and executed very quickly due to the weather. We also had around 180 pre registrations (also another record). So please enjoy all the photos in this issue as it was an amazing show with a ton of great “Mustang Memories” made to be remembered! It is kinda like having a baby, because from the time you will be reading this we will be delivering another amazing show in 9 Months! So thank you again to everyone! Hope to see you all and many new faces in 2009!
