La donna è mobile
Designed for walking
My grandfather always used to say “If you want to find out what a person is
really like, look at their shoes.” He was a post office manager, and everyone
he interviewed for a job could count on having their footwear thoroughly
scrutinized. Anyone wearing a well-polished, well-cared-for pair of shoes
had one foot in the door already – after all, they could be nothing less than
meticulous.
Like my grandfather, I tend to size people up by what they’re wearing on their
feet. A man in his 40s in snakeskin boots? Midlife crisis, more than likely.
5
Welcome to the third issue of Size 5, Wolky’s very own “catazine”: a cross between a
catalog and a magazine for you and your feet. Size 5 (European size 38, US size 7½)
has been the shoe industry’s sample size for many years. It’s a light-hearted nod to
the fashion world and its fixation on size 0 models. Size 5 doesn’t think in categories
but makes space for real women – inspiring and enterprising girls and women of all
ages, types and sizes. Size 5 is for women with their
own style who won’t be dictated to by fleeting
fashion trends but make a conscious decision to
opt for quality and comfort. Women who express
their personality in the way they dress.
And there’s plenty for men too: check out page
29 and 30 of this brochure. Size 5 is published
twice a year to coincide with the launch of Wolky’s
new shoe collections: the spring/summer and
fall/winter collection.

we’d love to hear from you.

But this family quirk is actually rooted in science. Researchers at the University
of Kansas showed 63 test subjects pictures of around 200 pairs of shoes and
asked them to sketch a brief profile of their owners. And in 90% of cases they
got it absolutely right! In other words, your shoes say a lot about who and what
you are.
Practical, comfortable shoes are worn by friendly people who are eager to
please, it seems. Ankle boots, on the other hand, are associated with an
aggressive personality. Whoa! Hold on a second there. Wolky’s practical,
comfortable ankle boots are among our best sellers! So what does that say
about their wearers, myself included? Are we friendly and eager to please,
yet a little hot-headed too?
Fickle, in other words? Not the most flattering label, is it? But in Verdi’s 1851
opera Rigoletto, this kind of woman is exactly who the passionate Duke of
Mantua is singing about in the famous aria “La donna è mobile” (“Woman is
fickle”). So we’re not alone in our fickleness, and there certainly seem to be
plenty of admirers and lovers around who aren’t put off by it!

catazine for real women (and their men!)
Besides a great range of ankle boots, next season Wolky will once again be
offering loads of other attractive models. And it can sometimes be a distinct
advantage to be close to the source, like I am. Just last week I asked our
manufacturer in Portugal whether she could get her hands on a nice piece of
snakeskin to make a pair of our ankle boots especially for me.
Ankle boots, I hear you cry? Er, made of snakeskin? So not just the fickle kind,
a midlife crisis to boot...

On the road again
Leave the car at home and head out on foot. If it were up to Wolky, we’d all be doing it! And this season
we’re doing everything we can to convince you that it doesn’t have to be a chore. Take a turn around
the block in one of our robust ranges: the Kicks, Torque and Trial ranges – and of course not forgetting
the UP2. Hip, trendy, comfortable – and great for your feet too. And you’ll never notice the miles slipping
away in the Joy flip-flop, the elegant Espadrille or the ultra-light Sparkle sandal, a new star in the
Wolky firmament. Or if you prefer to stay in heels – why not? Step-Up, our trendy sandals-with-heels
and our high-heeled Experience boots are at least as comfortable to walk in as flats.
Not convinced? Just put your best foot forward and see for yourself! All Wolky shoes come with
the legendary Wolky comfort as standard. Like the anatomically shaped footbed (often removable),
the perfect fit, the leather lining and the uppers made of the very best types of leather.
And Wolky is not just for women – there’s plenty for men too in the Cloud 9 men’s collection.
So what are you waiting for?
Never change a winning team, they say. But Wolky
isn’t averse to innovating now and again. So we’ve
added two completely new models to our popular
Espadrille range. A charming sandal and a slightly
dressier version with a closed toe in which the upper
extends right over the instep. And just like all the
other shoes in the Espadrille range, the two new
models have a supple, flexible rubber sole, a footbed
lined with soft goat suede and a leather inner lining.

kicks
Unlike many average sneakers, Wolky Kicks are good for your
feet and as light as a feather to boot! Made of smooth Kaiser
leather, they have a subtle lace-up closure, a removable footbed,
and a robust white midsole. For an extra cool touch, the Ibrox has
cutaways covered in water-repellent nylon fabric. The high-top
Hampton and the low Croke come in a choice of one color or twocolor combinations.

Wolky in the mix with…
My Favourite four
From sporty casual to elegant city chic. You can coordinate Wolkys endlessly with your favorite brands.
Meet My Favourite Four: four beautiful scarves transformed into one exclusive, multifunctional XXXL
original.
Official Lovely scarf and
Montana Spring 4294 Helena
Black skinnies and a black top.
Or a little black dress. That’s all
this scarf needs to make it shine.
For an extra feminine touch, team
your outfit with the eye-catching
Montana Spring boot.
“Put on a scarf and you instantly feel well-dressed.”
Take four different scarves, sew them together and create something very special – that’s
the idea behind My Favourite Four. “We’ll see how it goes,” Annette van Eerdewijk-Jans
(39) thought when she started selling her unique XXXL scarves through her web store of
the same name. The concept was an immediate hit – not least because with just one
My Favourite Four scarf you can give your entire wardrobe a boost.
“With one of our scarves you can transform a business suit and a pair of heels
into something truly unique and eye-catching. They even work wonders on
those jeans and sneakers days!” says Annette. “Because our scarves
are so colorful, they coordinate with almost any outfit. There’ll almost
always be a color in them that matches.”
Annette sources the scarves from all over the world: from
New York to Shanghai, and from Utrecht to Peking. “We always
choose our colors and designs with the season and the latest
fashion trends in mind. So at the moment we’re featuring
a lot of fluorescent trim, but we also just look for things
we’d want to wear ourselves,” says Annette, who’s
responsible for turning the four individual scarves into
one coherent whole.
There are wacky, off-the-wall combinations that
produce a really wild scarf, scarves featuring panther
prints, or simple mixes of more subtle grays or
blacks with striking trims. Different though all the
scarves are, they do have one thing in common:
they set off an outfit beautifully – just like great
shoes, a beautiful leather bag and jewelry. Or as
Annette says: “Put on a scarf and you instantly
feel well-dressed.”

In the summer you want your footwear to be light and airy. No heavy clodhoppers – but flexible, easy-towear sandals that you barely notice you’ve got on. And that still give you the support you need, of course.
Sounds impossible? Not at all – the Sparkle does just that. An ultra-light outsole made of the innovative
material XL Light, incorporating a flowing wave pattern for an extra firm grip, and a footbed made of

“When I’m designing something, I always try to keep a specific idea at
the back of my mind”
From her studio in the Belgian Ardennes, Veronica
Vartic (38) creates stunning belts, clutches and
jewelry. Every single one a limited edition, and
every single one unique. Wolky’s favorite: a
slender lamb’s leather belt with feather detail.
And best of all: you can win this very special
accessory!
She creates beautiful leather handbags, clutches
and leather belts. And as a trained silversmith,
she is increasingly making jewelry too. Romanian
by birth, Veronica can turn her hand to anything
and can often be found drawing, cutting, gluing
and designing away in her studio in the Ardennes
in Belgium. “I like robust designs,” she says of her
style. “Shapes that look simple but are actually
quite complex when you take a closer look.”
Veronica is a true artist – but funnily enough
she only discovered this when she moved to
the Netherlands sixteen years ago. “I majored
in economics in Romania, and I also took an
International Business course in English here,”
she says. “Straight away I got a job with a company
providing non-life insurance for people in the
construction industry. But that was SO boring! I
thought: if this is what I’m going to have to do for
the rest of my life, it’s going to be awful.”
So she started to think about what she could do
that would give her the most pleasure. Veronica:
“When I was a little girl, I was already making my
own skirts, tops and pants on my mother’s sewing
machine. Sometimes they were a disaster, but I
did actually wear what I made. So I decided to go
with fashion and the following year I enrolled at the
Art Academy in Maastricht. I’ve been working as a
freelance designer for many years now, and I sell
my accessories through my web store and various
retail outlets.”
11
4Jumpx
Fox tails
An idea for a design often pops into Veronica’s head
quite by chance. “I tend to work entirely intuitively,
but when I’m designing something I always try to
keep a specific idea at the back of my mind. It helps
keep me focused. My bag collection, for example, is
based on the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. I’ve
reproduced the characteristics of all the characters
in my bags, and I’ve even given the bags names:
Little Red Riding Hood, the Hunter, the Wolf.”
She often gives her designs a playful, humorous
twist – like the feather hanging from her lamb’s
leather belt. “The idea for this design, which Wolky
is featuring as a prize, came from a memory of
Romania. In the 1990s the fox tail was the musthave accessory for necklaces and key rings. There
was a kind of hunter’s theme going on. That image
has always remained with me, and I used it as a
source of inspiration for this belt.”
Veronica doesn’t see herself going on to become a
global label with dozens of outlets; she would much
rather remain small and independent. “It’s great
to be my own boss and make my own decisions
about what I do. And the positive feedback I get
12
from my customers really spurs me on to continue.
In the current economic climate, it’s not easy to be
a small, independent designer, but I’m still very
happy that I made the switch when I did.”

NasSira Boudhan: Inspiring Wolky womAn
An education is something we take for granted in the Netherlands, but this isn’t the case for young girls
in many parts of Morocco. Nassira Boudhan (40) has experienced this first hand and believes passionately
that it should change. With her label, A-Lief, she is giving women and children in her native region and
later, she hopes, in the whole of Morocco the chance to get an education and have a brighter future.
Be brave, be different
“Even when I was only six years old, I wanted to go to school! To learn to
read and write – even if I didn’t yet understand that I would have to walk
6 miles every day to get there.”
“I was almost eight when I moved to the
Netherlands from Morocco. I’ve always loved it
here, but there was something that kept nagging
at me. A gut feeling that got stronger and stronger
over the years. I felt I had no choice but to do something about it. I longed to give young Moroccan
girls in my native region of Beni Boughafar, and
later perhaps in the whole of the Rif area or even
throughout the whole country, the opportunity
to go to school just like their counterparts in the
Netherlands.
I was born in the little town of Sammar in Morocco.
It’s in a beautiful but remote mountain area.
Because my father and uncles were working in the
West, my grandfather was the head of the family.
He decided who went to school and who didn’t. The
girls in the family weren’t accorded that privilege.
They had to go for Koran lessons at the mosque
around the corner. But although I was only six
years old, I didn’t like going there. I wanted to go to
school! To learn to read and write - even if I didn’t
yet understand that I would have to walk 6 miles
every day to get there.
Every morning I secretly followed the girl next door
who was allowed to go to school. I should really
have gone straight back home because I wasn’t
16
on the register. Luckily the teacher thought it was
too dangerous for me to walk around on my own,
although he did say I should ask my grandfather for
the family book so he could register me. When I got
home I immediately started rooting around in my
parents’ cupboard for it, with an angry mother and
grandmother standing over me telling me I must
never do that again! But I did. Three months later I
could read and write – and I was my grandfather’s
pride and joy.”
Education within reach
“After we moved to the Netherlands, I was allowed
to choose what to learn and where. After grade
school, I went to high school and then on to a local
college, but my family wouldn’t have minded if I’d
gone away to study. The world was my oyster. But
my happiness was increasingly overshadowed
by the realization that girls in my native region of
Morocco don’t have all these opportunities. It’s
often impossible for them to get to a high school,
it’s too expensive to stay in lodgings, and anyway
parents are not keen to expose their daughters to
the hostile outside world.
In 2010, I was working as a marketing manager for
a bank when I found out about the Bink founda-
tion. Every year it supports a different project that
targets the children of a specific country. Suddenly
everything fell into place! Working with Bink, I first
looked into what was needed in the Beni Boughafar
region in terms of education. And that turned out to
be a whole lot. People there needed to be informed
about the importance of education, education
needed to be made more accessible, and women
needed to have the chance to earn their own money
so that their children could go to school.
We wanted to keep our project small, so we decided
to tackle just one of these needs: making education
more accessible. There are schools in some places,
For me it’s important to sell products that are made
according to traditional methods, so that these
handicrafts are revived and preserved. Examples of
our crafts include leatherworking, spinning wool,
weaving and embroidery. For the same reason I
decided to incorporate a red and white woolen cloth
called a mendil into all A-Lief products. The mendil
used to be worn as a scarf, apron or blanket by just
about all women in north-west Morocco. I have
them made into skirts, but also bags with leather
details made from leftover leather I get from Wolky.
In this way, A-Lief helps women generate income
so they can afford an education, and I also use the
but no bus service. And it’s too far and too dangerous for young girls to walk to school. We threw a
big fund-raising party in 2011 to get the money
together to buy some buses. The buses were delivered in Morocco, putting education within the reach
of a large group of boys and girls in the area.”
profits from A-Lief to support educational projects
in Morocco. So we’re killing two birds with one
stone. All A-Lief products are sold via my web
store, but in the future I also want to start working
with stores that believe in sustainable entrepreneurship. The nagging feeling I once had has gone.
Now I’m living my dream and I’m so happy and
grateful that I can do this!”
Leftover leather from Wolky
“My agreement with Bink was that after completing the project with them, I would tackle the other
needs on my own. I gave up my job as a marketing
manager and started working full time on my own
label: A-Lief. A-Lief stands for education for every
child. I design clothes, housewares and accessories
in the Netherlands which I have made by women in
Morocco. Because the women can earn their own
money this way, they are able to afford an education
for their children and often for themselves as well.

“Our designs are feminine but never prissy.

From chaos to order and back again. Anyone with
children knows all about that. That’s why Christa
Hubert (37) and Miranda Smid (38) christened their
children’s clothing collection “Chaos and Order.”
Their eponymous web store was soon swamped
with requests from moms who wanted to be as
well-dressed as their children. Couldn’t Christa
and Miranda come up with a women’s range as
well?
“Not long afterwards the grown-up version of
Chaos and Order was born,” says Miranda. It didn’t
take long to choose the name: Miss Chaos. A
label featuring sassy outfits for women with taste.
Women who, despite leading busy lives, want to
look good – and feel comfortable as well. So no
pinching straps or fussy designs, just beautiful, soft
fabrics and a fit to match.
“Miss Chaos dresses, skirts, tops and leggings

Sandra Cruz: Inspiring Wolky womAn
wining & dining
Full-bodied wines, grilled fish and vegetables fresh from the field that melt in the mouth. Much of the
Wolky collection is manufactured in a culinary paradise: Portugal. Sandra Cruz (34) was born and bred
there and is recreating one of her favorite recipes especially for Size 5: Bacalhau, a traditional dish
made of dried and salted fish.
“I love giving
old recipes a
brand new twist”
“When I cook, I’m in another world. A world in
which only the kitchen and the products around me
exist. I love the challenge of making something nice
from what I have on hand. Cooking is my job and my
hobby. I cook at home every day. Even when I go out
to work in the evening, I usually make something
quickly for my partner so that all she needs to do is
heat it up.
To be honest, becoming a chef isn’t something
I always dreamed of. I kind of slipped into it and
discovered that I loved it! I was born in Porto,
Portugal. My father left my mother when she was
pregnant with me. We had very little money and
she soon got to the point where she could no longer
look after my four brothers and sisters and me. We
were taken in by various families who were friends
of ours, but that was no picnic either.
I went to school until I was 16, but then I had to go
to work to help out the family I was living with. My
sister runs her own restaurant and she offered me
a job. From the moment I walked into the kitchen
for the first time, I was hooked! I never trained as a
chef, so I learned everything on the job. But I picked
things up very quickly and got an enormous amount
of pleasure out of it. Cooking is without doubt my
greatest passion!”
24
Also, they drink less wine with meals in the
Netherlands than we do in Portugal. Wine is very
important to the Portuguese, as is port. I drink a
small glass before and after my meal every day.
Dutch people should do that too - it’s so good!
It also goes well with Bacalhau, a traditional
Portuguese dish made with cod. Every region in
Portugal has its own version of this dish, but of
course my recipe is the best!”
Copy Fleur Baxmeier.
Two hot meals
“I came to the Netherlands two years ago.
Job prospects in Portugal were poor and I needed
a change of scenery. It was a good move, and I’ve
been working at Azul in Amsterdam for three
months now. It’s a charming Portuguese restaurant
where I’m responsible for everything our guests
are served, mainly Portuguese-style grills and fish
dishes with lots of herbs and spices like ground
cumin, cilantro and bay leaves.
I don’t create new dishes in the restaurant, but I
like improvising at home and getting my partner
to try what I make. I love giving old recipes a brand
new twist. My partner says that my seafood dish is
the best she’s ever tasted: with mussels, shrimp,
baby clams, vegetables and a whole lot of garlic.
But I also really love tripas a moda do Porto, a
Portuguese dish made with white beans, chicken,
chorizo and, of course, cumin.
I find Dutch food a little skimpy compared to
Portuguese cuisine. We’re used to eating two hot
meals a day - we also always eat a hot lunch. Here
they eat bread - that’s not a meal! Dutch dishes are
usually tasty enough but they are also very simple.
Stamppot is not exactly what you’d call fine dining,
but I recently had Draadjesvlees (beef and onion
stew) for the first time, and it was surprisingly tasty!
Sandra’s recipe for success:
Portuguese bacalhau
Sandra: “I want to share this recipe because it
reminds me of Portugal. Bacalhau is often eaten
on festive occasions - it brings back memories of
happy times with friends and family. It’s also very
easy to make and really delicious.”
Ingredients for two people:
• 2 salt cod fillets - available from the
supermarket
• 1 lb washed baby potatoes in their skins
• 2 medium onions cut into half rings
• 1 garlic clove
• 1 tomato, quartered
• 2 bay leaves
• Olive oil
• Salt
• Black pepper
Instructions:
• Soak the salt cod in a bowl of cold water in the
refrigerator for three days. Refresh the water
twice a day.
• After three days, remove the cod from the water
and pat dry with a dishtowel or paper towel.
• Spread out the onions on the bottom of a baking
pan and place the cod on top. Pour a generous
amount of olive oil over the cod and onions. Add
black pepper to taste.
• Place the two bay leaves, the halved garlic clove
and the quartered tomatoes in the baking pan
next to the cod.
• Cook the potatoes in their skins for 10 minutes
and drain. Take each potato in your hand and
tap it gently on the kitchen counter so that the
skin splits, then place them around the fish.
• Season the potatoes only with salt.
• Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Place the
baking pan in the oven, then heat up the oven
to 200°C (395°F) with the dish inside. After
20 minutes, turn the fish over and cook for a
further 20 minutes.
• Remove the dish from the oven and serve the
fish with some potatoes, some onions, a piece
of garlic and the tomatoes.
Serving suggestion:
Bacalhau is delicious with green vegetables
such as snap peas or spinach. Serve with Cabeça de
Burro (white wine) or Monte Velho (red); Periquita
also goes well with this dish. And of
course no Portuguese meal is complete without
a glass of port!

UP2
If we had to choose one word to describe this popular Wolky line, it would be “ultra”.
Because the UP2 is ultra-light, ultra-airy and ultra-springy. The secret’s in the sole, which is
made up of two layers: a flexible rubber outsole that gives you a perfect grip, a light PU midsole
for extra shock absorption. The footbed is wonderfully lightweight – and naturally it’s removable.
And as if that weren’t enough, with its fashionable upturned toe the UP2 looks sassy and young.

Put on a pair of Wolkys and you’ll notice right away:
feet love our shoes. Comfort is what we’re all about.
We pride ourselves on our anatomically shaped
footbeds and lasts designed to produce a perfect
fit, coupled with our passion for style and color,
carefully selected materials, and elegant finish.
Wolky has been synonymous with quality since we
first started out in 1982. Wolky stands for great
looking shoes with a distinctive design and instantly
recognizable comfort. Shoes you’ll love to wear
time after time after time.
Wolky is a thoroughly Dutch family-run company
that has built up an extensive collection of women’s
footwear: from sandals, shoes and pumps to clogs
and boots. And now we’ve also created a special
label for men: Cloud 9. Wolky’s reputation extends
way beyond the Dutch borders; with more than
2000 sales outlets around the world, we make
shoes that are loved and worn by people of every
conceivable nationality.
Our success story started with just one sandal:
the Alto. A bit alternative, a bit playful. With adjustable straps and a fantastic footbed that shaped
itself to the foot. The Alto sparked a true revolution
in the shoe world, and Wolky still has the power
to surprise and delight when people discover
how comfortable our footbeds are. Anatomically
shaped, shock-absorbing, removable, and with an
extra layer of memory foam so they mold themselves precisely to the foot.
In the years following the launch of the Alto, we
worked on expanding our collection and developed a unique, distinctive style of our own. A style
characterized by quality, comfort, flair and innovation. Every season we bring out new models.
Always slightly different, always innovative. But
never losing sight of what made the Wolky brand
so successful: an innovative, high-quality product
with its own distinctive style.
We now produce more than 25 lines of shoes every
season. More and more of our shoes are made
with eco-friendly materials, including leather that
meets the strictest requirements, and recycled
rubber for the soles. And we’re still focusing on
innovation even after all these years, with a sharp
eye for materials, comfort, color, design and
durability. With our determination and firm belief
in an honest product, what started out small has
grown into a global brand.
Step into Wolky’s world!
