Spaghetti Dinner!
Friday, March 4, 5:00 and 7:30 seating's
For Righteous Mission this summer, our High School Youth will
be traveling to Columbus, OH to work with the Church For All
People. We are excited to be sending a team of youth and adults
to experience transformational mission as they work to help feed
the hungry, help the homeless, teach children, work in the
community and more. Thank you for your prayer support!
On Friday, March 4, you can support our Righteous Mission
team by attending the annual Spaghetti Dinner in Fellowship Hall
that includes wonderful cuisine and entertainment. There are two
seating's - 5:00pm and 7:30pm (with childcare
available at 5pm). The expanded menu this year
includes minestrone soup, salad, bread, a never
ending plate of pasta with Marinara or Meat
Sauce, or Pasta Alfredo with or without
chicken, dessert and beverage. Gluten free
meals are available upon request as
well. Our youth will be your hosts, your
servers, and your coat checks. They and
their parents will prepare this delicious
meal for you. Tickets are on sale at the
crossroads for $20 a person after worship
services and in the main office during the
week.

Jesus is more than a Buddy
Jesus is more than a buddy. That may seem obvious to you. However, last night in
class there was one powerful aha moment. We are all about relationships. We
focus as a culture and a church on having quality relationships. Our faith may be
described as those who have a relationship with Jesus.
But that is not what the creeds of the early church said. Apostle Paul did not write
his relationship with Jesus. The early creeds like the Apostles Creed did not invite
us to have a relationship with Jesus. Their message was simple and direct. Jesus is
Lord.
That changes everything. The Christian faith does not offer Jesus as a really good
option to add to all the other great options for advice in the world. Jesus is Lord.
Jesus is not described as one of the many important relationships we have in our
life. He is Lord.
Our tendency to make Jesus one of our relationships makes it easier to put his
priority in our life as one of a long list. Our relationship with Jesus takes away a
sense of urgency to do what he asks or witness him to others by word and action.
If we think of having a relationship with Jesus, we tend to believe there are times
we put him ahead of others and times we put others ahead of him. But if Jesus is
Lord……..
If Jesus is Lord, our priorities do not include him, they begin with him.
If Jesus is Lord, I do not try to find time for Jesus. All I do is for Jesus.
If Jesus is Lord, we do not have special holy times of the year, every moment is
lived in the presence of the one who makes every day holy.
If Jesus is Lord, we do not look to Jesus for hope, we always live in hope.
As we spend March getting ready for a great Easter celebration at the end of the
month, let our preparation be this simple. Put Jesus as Lord of your life.
What is Easter if it is not this simple truth? Jesus is Lord.

Wesley Choir Musical
On Sunday, March 13th the Wesley Choir will present the
musical “Are We There Yet? The Story of Moses and the Exodus”
at both the 9 and 11 a.m. services. It is especially fitting that this
particular show be presented in worship during Lent. Lent has
often been compared to a journey through the desert, a search for
a deep relationship with God. God calls Moses from the life of a shepherd to the life
of a nation builder, sending him to confront the Pharaoh and free God’s people from
slavery in Egypt. What is Moses’ first response to God’s call? A very human fear of
failure. “Who am I to do this? He asks. “I’m slow of speech and I don’t know what
to say. Please, Lord, send someone else.” Like so many accounts in the Bible, at the
heart of a great spiritual event we find some people a lot like ourselves. This
retelling of the Exodus story will be told with humor, song and the humanity of
Moses, Miriam, Aaron, Joshua and the Pharaoh. The Moses story reminds us that
God can use us even when we feel weak and that God goes with us, never leaving us
alone. We hope to see everyone on March 13th!

Requiem
On Good Friday, March 25 at 7:00 PM the Chancel Choir will offer, as part of the
service, a cantata by John Leavitt: Requiem.
Requiem. Makes you think of those who are no longer with us. It recalls a series of
prayers first uttered over 1200 years ago. Prayers like “Grant them eternal rest”,
and “Let eternal Light shine upon them”. But that is not the requiem we are singing.
John Leavitt looked to the German Requiem by Brahms, which in a revolutionary
way started with a prayer for the living with “Blest are they that Morn, for they shall
be comforted”. He started there and I believe he dramatically changed the emphasis
to ask us: Why do we carry our burdens? We hold unto and even covet our
concerns. These things keep us away from the Lord. Put this burdens down, so we
can get on with what is more important: filling ourselves with hope based on a close
relationship with God.
(continued on next page)
Page 4
(Worship continued)
The first movement is a setting of Psalm 23 (The Lord is my Shepherd). It runs a
litany of concerns answered with what God will provide. At the end of the psalm
we are told “..and I will dwell with the Lord forever”. How do we respond to this
statement? “Oh, clap your hands”, we are in full praise mode now, and the rest of
the requiem reminds of what we can do, if we unburden ourselves. We will
experience Peace, Remember that the Lord is our Light and Salvation, that because
we have hope, we know the Easter Mystery, and after the resurrection we are
asked “How can I keep from Singing”? Finally we end in a blessing of peace for all
who dwell with the Lord.
What an appropriate Good Friday message. When things look the bleakest have
hope and trust for there is an Easter Day before us. Please join us Good Friday.
Yours in Faith and Song
Kim Bishop

HOPE
Lord, Hear my voice!
I implore you! Hear me!
Hear me as I pray, as I fervently pray my way through Lent with the
mixed emotions of this season, the madness of His life, my life.
Listen to me! Where are you?! Amen
I sing the words of the hymns of faith and of beauty believed and my heart is
drawn toward him, the Son. I read the words of John and know that his concern
for us is utmost and that, even as he prepared to go to his Father, his deep desire
was for us to be protected from evil and continually be one in belief, as He and the
Father are one. However, at times, I just need more clarity. Why the suffering?
Jesus admonishes us to remain in him and he will remain in us – we can do
nothing apart from him. So, it is imperative that we as individuals take time to
listen and to contemplate how we can stay connected to God - to remain in him
and to stay in love with him. Our own spiritual health, renewal and growth
depend upon it. Staying connected through
church is a significant step in this direction.
During Lent we go to church “remembering
who we are, and hopeful of who we can be.”
Lord, It’s me again . . .
Forgive me. In spite of desolation, I know you
hear each plea, each repentant thought, each
word of thanksgiving and praise. The
excitement and dream of a bright Easter
morning with the Cross raised high pull me
forward. And when I see that light, be it in the
spring of March or the drear of November – ah!
It is Easter! And hope becomes strength! Amen

N OTES FROM YOUR MISSIONARY
Addressing the Hierarchy of Needs
Henry Maslow developed the theory of Hierarchy of Needs. Essentially, a
person has to have their basic physiological and safety needs met
first. Individuals need shelter, clothing, safety, food, and clean water before
they can thrive.
At Clarkston UMC we seek to address all the stages of the pyramid. We offer a
food pantry to 35 families a month, eviction and shut-off protection for 250+
families a year, and have recently sent not only our monetary gifts to Flint to
provide water filters, but have also sent groups of volunteers daily to
help distribute water and filters over the past month. Working alongside
D.R.A.W and the Crossroads District of the United Methodist Church, we have
identified where our dollars and volunteers could be utilized best.
In the office I have heard many stories of family members riding bikes in the
snow in order to pick up cases of water or neighbors helping out neighbors by
bringing water to older individuals who can't pick-up the cases on their
own. The work in Flint is just beginning and Clarkston UMC is committed for
the long haul. If you are able to help, each Tuesday a group of CUMC
volunteers will meet in Clarkston to caravan to Flint to volunteer. Volunteers
meet on Tuesdays at the Washington/ Main St. carpool lot at 8:25 and return at
noon. If you are interested in helping you can contact Mary Gladstone-Highland
at [email protected]
After individuals have their basic needs met they can focus on building a more
sustainable future for their families. Clarkston UMC helps families living in or
near poverty in Clarkston to build their futures by offering Getting
Ahead. Getting Ahead is about to start up again in April and we are currently
looking for church members or groups who would be interested in providing
dinner for a night. If you are interested in helping to provide dinner you can
contact Mary Gladstone-Highland for more information.
Love and Belonging, Esteem, and Self-actualization are at the top of the
pyramid. I appreciate working in a congregation that focuses on the wholeness
and well-being of all of those inside and outside of our walls!
Blessings,
Mary B. Gladstone-Highland

Confirmation Kingdom Assignments & Bazaar
CUMC’s confirmands are having a first-ever Kingdom Assignment Bazaar on
March 13th after each worship service in Fellowship Hall. Join us and learn how
each confirmand is growing God’s Kingdom and who/what organization they are
specifically supporting to do so. You will have the opportunity to support the
confirmands by simply encouraging them, making a donation, buying a product,
and/or praying with them. A brief description of each Kingdom project follows:
Emelia Tombrella is supporting All Worthy of Love (AWOL), an organization that
provides food and hygiene kits to current and past human trafficking victims.
Emelia is making and selling handmade cards & crafts, and using that money to
purchase hygiene kit supplies.
Molly Damitio & Betsy Scheu are supporting Granny Hans School for disabled
children, located in China. They are donating to the school’s concert band fund
so children can experience musical education in a fun way. They are raising
money by selling mugs and bookmarks.
Bryna Halligan & Kaleigh Halligan are supporting Detroit Public Schools by
making and selling “bathbombs,” aka bath fizzies, and donating all profits to DPS.
They will also be collecting new/gently used school supplies from backpacks, to
notebooks, to pen/pencils … Bring supplies on March 13th.
Breana Schmidt, Emily Rousell & Dylan Wright are supporting St. Paul’s
Methodist College by making and selling air fresheners ($7).
Mark Sprague is supporting Blessings in a Backpack in a unique way. Instead of
buying food, Mark is buying birthday presents for kids in the program because
“sometimes food isn’t enough to bring the joy that someone deserves on their
birthday.” Mark is collecting returnable bottles/cans and sponsoring “casual
days” for teachers at Bailey Lake elementary. Bring your returnables on March
13th.
Molly McCaghy & Katelyn Rusnell are supporting CELF Lifestraw “100
Schools” water campaign. The CELF “100 Schools” organization donates water
filtration systems to purify dirty water, making it drinkable and usable. Molly &
Katelyn have created a GO FUND ME account and are accepting donations
now : www.gofundme.com/unqgsc3e .
Mary Borowski & Grace Ettinger are
supporting St. Joseph’s Hospital by raising
money to make blankets and purchase stuffed
animals. They are collecting returnable cans/
bottles and selling “Got Hope” bracelets.
