Flamingos to Migrate to CUMC this Spring!
Please support our Senior Youth as they continue their fundraising efforts for
their mission trip to Costa Rica! The fundraiser is a “flamingo flocking”. WHAT
is a flamingo flocking? It’s where an individual pays a donation for our youth to
place a flock of flamingos on a friend’s (victim’s) yard. The flamingos will roost
in the targeted friend’s yard for a day. At this point the flamingo-ed friend has
the opportunity to “hire” by donation our youth to help the flamingos migrate to
another friend’s yard, and so on. Questions? Ask Annette Siminski.

A PRIL 2016
The Joy of Easter has passed and now we face the so what of Easter. After all the
celebration, what difference does Easter make now as we move into April? What
difference will it make for me next week? And what difference will it make for the
church and the world?
Over the four weeks of April, our worship theme is, “The Path after Easter…What
does Resurrection mean Today?” Each Sunday will focus on the power of Easter
that goes beyond lilies and singing Christ the Lord is Risen Today. How can faith
overcome the doubts in my mind and heart? Does God love me even after what I
have done? Does Easter give me the power of Jesus to change the future? Can I/
we ever find a way to trust and care instead of hating and judging each other?
Easter makes a difference far more important than one great celebration. It truly
changes lives. Easter changes the world.
The power of Easter continues to flow through our efforts and beyond our abilities
to make a difference in the world. In the last three days, I have talked with a
community person who wanted to tell me of how our church is seen as caring and
as a place of hope. I welcomed a couple who came to the church for food and
thanked us not only for the food but for the spirit of hospitality and respect that
came with it. I listened to a woman talk about how her life, her finances and her
family were changed because of our mission outreach. I listened to people tell
about how God called them to serve and joyfully find their place in this ministry.
Easter is making a difference in the world today. I know because I have seen it,
felt it and watched others become new creations as Christ moved in their life.
Look around and be amazed. Look deep and feel it. Reach out and share it. Easter
is here and it remains the joy of our life.

April Sunday school & Angels schedule—There is no
Sunday school on April 3rd (spring break) or April 24th at 11am
(Bible Sunday and Family Worship Service—11am ONLY). No
Angels on April 3 or April 10.
Favorite Sports team jersey day on April 17th. Wear your favorite sports
team jersey to Sunday school on April 17th. Perhaps you have a Buckeyes jersey?!
VBS Registration begins May 8th! VBS is June 20-24th. Cost is
$15/child and a case of water (which we will donate to
Flint). Registration will be at the crossroads on Sundays and in the
main office throughout the week--through June 5th.
Bible Sunday is April 24th at 11am. If you have a 2nd grader, he/she will
receive a bible from a special bible buddy in our church. Please make sure you have
returned your RSVP card mailed to you in February. If you did not receive it in the
mail, please see Annette Siminski ASAP. We do not want to miss any 2nd
graders. Breakfast for the 2nd graders, families and bible buddies will be that
morning at 9:30am.
VBS informational meeting! We will hold our next VBS meeting on Sunday,
April 10th at 10am in Room 207 (Children’s Church). Come learn about our very
fun theme (Surf Shack) and how you can help. If you cannot attend the meeting
and want to help, please contact Annette at [email protected].
VBS Donations are needed: Cases of water (small bottles), pre-packaged Rice
Krispie Treats, granola bars, Oyster crackers, Gummi Worms, Swedish Fish, mini
marshmallows, boxes of Goldfish or Cheez-Its, pretzels, Cheerios, Kix, Chex
cereal, Froot Loops, dried fruit, large packages of M&Ms, bananas, clementines,
apples and carrots. You may drop off donations in the main office.

No Evening Youth Group on April 3rd and 10th - Happy Spring Break!
Youth Breakfast Club
Youth Breakfast Club continues for 7- 12th graders in the youth lounge on
Sundays at 9 & 11am. Come hang out with friends and enjoy breakfast while you
watch the sermon on the TV and have a discussion afterwards. No YBC April 3rd.
YBC will resume April 10th.
Sunday Night FUEL YOUTH GROUP continues for all 6th-8th graders. Youth
are encouraged to bring friends! The upcoming topics are:

Save the Date: CUMC GAMES GALORE –May 1st 6-8pm
Your youth won’t want to miss this event at CUMC. Our youth groups along with
the youth group from St Daniels’ Church in Clarkston will be coming together for a
night of crazy fun games and of course great snacks! Games include life size Jenga,
human bowling, blow up Wrecking Ball, Nine Square in the Air, spoons and more!
A sign up genius has been sent out to help supply food and assistance. Please sign up
to help out if you are able!

It’s almost that time of the year for our 7 &8th grade lock-in. We will have
representatives from the high school youth group and confirmation class come and
talk to the youth about their next steps in their faith journey. We will also have a lot
of fun events so please mark your calendars.
SAVE THE DATE: FUEL SUMMER MISSION TRIP, JUNE 26-JUNE 30
FUEL Summer Mission Trip 2016 will begin by traveling to Redford, Michigan to
work at the Aldersgate/Brightmoor Initiative. Our Middle school youth will paint
boards for abandoned homes, work with children
of the area in the Superhero’s Academy, assist
with Garden work, team building games as well as
work in the Free Store. We will end the week by
assisting Adult Righteous Mission at the Hope
Warming Center in Pontiac, MI. Youth will begin
with an overnight Sunday evening at the
Aldersgate Church and continue the week with
daily mission trips. Participants can attend all
week or chose the days they are able to attend. Cost for the week is $75.
Commitment and ½ payment due May 22. Final Payment due June 12th.

members will join you for breakfast, and we need pictures of you by May 1st!

Did you know that 10 High School Seniors and 4
Adults are planning a mission trip to Rice and Beans
Ministry in Costa Rica? They will be serving June 1825, 2016. These youth, who have been active in our
church’s youth ministry and mission, will spend a
week distributing food, doing construction work,
working with kids, and gaining an understanding of poverty and transformational
ministry. Thank you to all who have already contributed to their
fundraising efforts. Please keep your eyes open for upcoming ways to support

PET Update : Wednesday, April 6, we will be carpooling to Ed Noll's
workshop near Hadley to fabricate and assemble parts for the PET vehicles. We
will meet at the church at 08:15, and be back by about 12:30. You should wear
clothing appropriate for the weather that would not be ruined by a little

Helping Hearts Helping Hands Update: God has blessed our mission
tremendously in the past few months…over 200 children received Christmas “Zip
Its”, along with a hot meal, a day full of activities and learning the true meaning of
Christmas. Over 200 children received backpacks and school supplies this month
as they started their new school year. Sadly, my (Erica) recent travels to Honduras
have been postponed due to an outbreak of the Zika virus, however, mission
projects continue. Thank you to all who help to make these projects possible! In

Adult Righteous Mission 2016 June 27 – July 1 -- Save the Date!
Hope Hospitality and Warming Center Pontiac, Michigan
It is with great joy, your ARM Coordinating Team announces that we will again be
serving at the Hope Hospitality and Warming Center in Pontiac. Remember,
ARM is a schedule friendly mission opportunity where you can work one to five
days! Also, we are looking for more Team Leaders to help develop the work plans
for a wide array of projects, including: Installing fence, updating bathrooms,

building a second pavilion, cooking, gardening, landscaping, painting, organizing
& cleaning, praying, teaching, and Connecting People to God.
There is a role for everyone who would like to participate! And, back by popular
demand, Kid's Camp, set for Wednesday, June 29th, so CUMC parents of young
children can participate as well.
We certainly hope you will join us! Save the Date! And watch for additional

We are getting ready to create a new photo directory here at CUMC and we need
you to make it complete! By participating you will receive a free printed

through April. If you would like some assistance please contact the church office

Building Committee
Update
As we continue to finalize the Detailed
Drawings for the Ministry expansion, the
Mortgage Bid Process is well underway.
We have received proposals from 3 institutions and will be completing this
activity in the next 4-6 weeks. The March Clarkston Site
Approval meeting was postponed, due to unforeseen Board member
illnesses. We look forward to receiving approval in early April.
Once approved by Clarkston, we will proceed with Construction drawings, and
schedule the Church Conference, planned for early May.
Thank you to those who participated in the Road trip. We saw a newly
completed multi-purpose activity center and were impressed with
the space, flexibility, and affordability it offers. Additionally, thanks to all who
participated in the Fellowship Gatherings. We enjoyed the
dialogue, questions, suggestions, and all around good cheer. We continue to
celebrate the support from our church family and community
for our Ministry Expansion.

W ORSHIP
The sermon series in April is “The Path After Easter: What Does Resurrection
Mean Today?”
Family Worship-April 24th at 11 a.m.
On Sunday, April 24th, at the 11 a.m. service we will experience our next ALL
FAMILY WORSHIP. This service will be a 45 minute service for KIDS of all
ages in which we will be presenting our second graders with their very own
Bible. This family friendly service will be active, engaging, and most of all
FUN! Bring your whole family and check it out!

A heart-felt thanks to the many, many parents who helped make the Wesley
Choir musical a resounding success. So many people provided food, found
props, dug out costumes, shopped, worked back stage, videoed and created
everything from a golden cow to chariots and horses. A special thank you to our
master builder, Jeremy Dean for the incredible set pieces. A great big thanks to
our artist-in-residence, Ms. Cheryl Kelly for creating our Mount Sinai and
Stephen Thomas for help with sound. Most importantly, thank you to all of the
children who worked so hard to memorize all their lines and
the songs. They were patient, dedicated and very hard
working. Can’t wait for next year!

Our Cherub Choir finished their season when they sang so
beautifully on Palm Sunday. Thank you for a wonderful
year and we can’t wait to see you back again in the
fall. Thank you to all the parents for bringing their little Cherub each week to
practice and learn. We look forward to hearing their angelic voices once again

UMW Circles for their April meetings.
Alethea Rose Circle will meet at 7 pm Wednesday, April 6th in the
Parlor. This month we will view the movie War Room. Holly has graciously
volunteered to bring the popcorn, please bring your own drink and and any
other movie snack you might want. Pantry needs: 4 roll packs of toilet paper,

Susanna Wesley Circle will meet on Wednesday, April 6, at 9:15 am in

Crossroads District Social Action Day – Human Trafficking: Modern Day
Slavery. Our speaker will be Jane White, director and founder of the Michigan
Human Trafficking Taskforce. This event will be held at Davison United

Wesley Study Trip in England—Trip: November 8-16, 2016
Rev. Hal Weemhoff is leading a Wesley Heritage Tour in London, November 816. Rev. Hal and Rev. Richard Dake will both be on the tour and help us gain a

Changing the World
Clarkston United Methodist Church is a very generous church. You have always
responded to need – whether it be the tragedy of Katrina, the water crisis of Flint
or the Angels In Training’s food collection for Lighthouse. Not just occasionally
but regularly. God has placed that desire in your heart to love and serve those in
need, to change the world.
The Mission and Outreach Team (MOT) of our church is entrusted with the
responsibility of wisely administering funds in keeping with our mission of Vitally
Connecting People to People and People to God and choosing ways in which to
further God’s Kingdom through supporting those in need. It exerts much
heartfelt effort and discussion to balance the giving of our dollars among local,
regional and international agencies. Some of our annual giving is under the
auspices of the Detroit Annual Conference and the General Board of Global
Ministries to agencies that they have already vetted. Others that come before the
team are evaluated independently. A few of those people and programs that we
reach are listed below.
1. Missionaries we support and who have visited here: Beatrice Gbanga
(Covenant Partner) of Sierra Leone, Princess Jusu (Covenant Partner) and Nancy
Carew of Liberia, Dr. Manya of the Congo, and Alex and Brenda Awad of
Palestine, among others; Sonya Luna coordinates Latino Ministries in the DAC;
Mary Gladstone-Highland is our mission umbrella here at CUMC.
2. International – UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief), which is
the amazing ministry that touches so many lives when disaster strikes and destroys
dreams, including Ebola and the European Refugee Crisis; Water for Life, clean
water; Anti-Human Trafficking; PET; Helping Hearts Helping Hands; National
Justice for Our Neighbors; Haiti Hot Lunch Program; Homeless in the USA; One
Great Hour of Sharing; Native Americans
3. Regional - God’s Country Cooperative Parish in the UP, a rural ministry
creating programs and serving those in poverty; South Flint Soup Kitchen; Anchor
House Campus Ministry; N.O.A.H. Project, ; Flint Water Crisis; DRAW;
Detroit Flood Recovery
4. Local - Adult Righteous Mission; Food Pantry; Sleeping Bags for the
Homeless, Youth/Adult Mission Trips; Back to School Backpacks; Food Pantry
There is so much need! You give and give because He first gave to us. MOT is
privileged to disburse these funds and we pray that God’s grace accompanies each
loving donation.

-day social gatherings. We meet for potluck lunches, programs and field trips. You

Kathleen Flanagan Rollins, author and former college literature teacher, will be
our guest speaker. Rollins has written a fascinating award-winning trilogy of
fiction based on archaeological facts: Misfits and Heroes: West from Africa, Past the
Last Island and A Meeting of the Clans that are set in ancient times of 14,000 years
ago.


High school grads seeking scholarships – Each year CUMC awards
scholarships to high school seniors who have met the following
criteria: active participation in church activities, strong academic
performance, leadership qualities while participating in school and
community projects, and thoughtful responses to a mandatory interview
with the interview committee. Applications are now available in the
church office, and must be returned by 9 PM Sunday April

Non-traditional scholarships – Scholarships are also available for CUMC
members who are seeking financial assistance for advanced education or

Caregivers’ Support Group meets on the Second Tuesday at 7:00 pm. Caring
for a loved one can be a big responsibility and sometimes an overwhelming
one. Join us for support, fellowship and practical advice from others who are on
the same journey. This was formerly known as the Transitioning Aging Parents

group, but now includes all caregivers, whether you are caring for a parent, spouse,
adult child, or other loved one. Please join us on April 12th. If you need support in

Send your kid to Camp!
The United Methodist Church has several camps throughout the state
that provide kids with a wonderful week of Christian Community, faith
development and lots of fun. Every year the UMW sponsors any child
or youth going to a Christian Camp with a campership. Contact Collen Godfrey if

Join us for Gentle Yoga on Mondays at 4 pm in the Parlor. The next 10 week
session starts April 4th and goes through June 13th (no class on Memorial Day), cost is
$75. Or you may prefer drop in visits at any time, cost $10. Only equipment
required is yoga mat or beach towel. Steve Guth of Yoga Oasis is instructor. For

Martha’s Helping Hands is a program at our church that delivers meals for shortterm situations such as recovery from surgery, hospitalization, etc. Would you be
willing to make all or part of a meal and deliver it? Or would you be willing just to do
a delivery if someone else can make a meal? Please sign up on the bulletin board
across from the main office. Thank you to Michele Poirier for heading up this
important but behind the scenes ministry!
The American Cancer Society's Clarkston Relay For Life is coming May
16 at Clintonwood Park. CUMC is again sponsoring a team of walkers. Captain this
year will be Mary Gladstone-Highland 248-625-1611 or [email protected] We
will be in Fellowship Hall on April 3rd and 24th to answer your questions; sell
luminaries in honor of cancer survivors or in memory of loved ones for the Luminaria
Ceremony at dark; or to accept donations for research and community
support. Donations may also be made online for the CUMC team members or the
church team. If you are a cancer survivor please register on the acsrelayforlife.org web
site for the survivors lap which is held on Saturday morning. There is also a t-shirt and
a celebration in honor of survivors. Thank you for all your help and support
The Parenting Teenagers Course for those parenting 11-18 year olds.
Please join us on Sunday evenings 6-7:30pm. Each 90 minute session will be a
combination of talks and discussing parenting issues with other parents. The study
