The gospel scene is Jesus’ conversation with His disciples on Holy Thursday night just before His arrest. He knew that their hearts were troubled because He had told them He was going away. While they would no longer be graced with His physical presence, Jesus reassured them of His special presence through His Spirit which His Father would send them. It was through this Spirit whom the disciples received at Pentecost that people came to believe the Gospel message. The community grew to include not only the Jewish community, but also non-Jews, the Gentiles. All were called to join the community. The first reading from Acts describes the tensions which the change in the makeup of the community caused. While change in our lives is difficult, we all know that it is expected and is something that we have to live with. Let us never forget that our risen Lord, living in glory with His Father and ours, is always with us to calm our troubled hearts. In the Word, Please remember in your prayers the following parish children who will be celebrating their First Communion on Saturday, May 7. Those who are beloved to us; those who inspire us; those who lead us in right paths; those whom we trust; and those who challenge us to a better life. In this gospel Jesus invites us to keep his word. We do so because he is beloved, inspiring, leading us rightly, trustworthy, challenging. Every word Jesus spoke during his preaching and teaching, every action he undertook of healing and forgiving, he did so with love. He did so because he loved his Father. He did so because he loves us continually and unconditionally. Jesus’ love is the model for our own lives. As Jesus loves, so are we to love. Totally. We are able to fulfill Jesus’ word-command to love as he loves because the Holy Spirit dwelling within prompts us to total selfgiving. The Holy Spirit prompts us, for example, to embrace the sick and the suffering, to be present to those in need, to ease the troubled heart, to bring peace in the midst of anxiety, to rejoice at the success of others, to believe in the goodness of others. As Jesus loves, so are we to love. Totally, this is what discipleship demands. Source: Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press The Catholic Home Study Service invites you to learn more about our faith by studying nine free courses at home. You will receive a textbook and workbook with study questions. Workbook answers can be sent to us either over the Internet or by postal mail. They will make whatever corrections are necessary and answer any questions you have. All who complete the course will receive a graduation certificate. There is no charge for the course, and no one will call on you. You may take the course alone or with friends and family members. The smallest good deed is better than the grandest intention. Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important. The best vitamin for making friends...B1. The 10 Commandments are not multiple choice. The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts. Minds are like parachutes…they function only when open. Ideas won’t work unless YOU do. One thing you can’t recycle is wasted time. One who lacks the courage has already finished. The heaviest thing to carry is a grudge. The following is a statement about this event from the NDP website: “The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for our nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Since its inception, this day has continually united Americans from all socio-economic, political, and ethnic backgrounds in prayer while also encouraging personal repentance and righteousness in the culture. The National Day of Prayer belongs to all Americans and is a day that transcends differences, bringing together citizens to celebrate our most beloved freedom; the freedom to humbly come before God and seek His guidance in prayer.” You are also invited to join us in fellowship for coffee and dessert after the service.
