OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
With ideal weather, gorgeous beaches,
verdant mountains, hidden valleys, and
tropical rainforests, few destinations rival O‘ahu for outdoor fun and recreation.
It’s no wonder that Wanderlust O‘ahu
(oahu.wanderlustfestival.com) comes to
Turtle Bay Resort on the island’s fabled
North Shore for the second time February 27-March 2. This one of a kind festival is a multi day extravaganza of yoga,
meditation, green living, music, healthy,
local food, stand up paddle, surfing, kayaking, nature walks, and hiking.
With 112 miles of shoreline, O’ahu is
water sports heaven. In Waikīkī, surf

scuba, snuba, and snorkeling.
Back on land, hiking adventures
abound. Climb Diamond Head, the
iconic volcanic crater, for awe-inspiring panoramas and follow the trail to
Mānoa Falls through a bamboo jungle
and rainforest in a scenic Honolulu valley. Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail
offers incredible vistas of the Windward
Coast, off shore islets, and Moloka‘i and
Lana‘i on clear days. And hiking is the
only way to reach the dramatic lava shoreline at remote Ka‘ena Point on the Leeward Coast. Consult Hawai‘i Trail and
Mountain Club (htmclub.org) for different trail hikes every weekend and Sierra
Club (hi.sierraclub.org/oahu/outingsched.
htm) for easy, moderate, and strenuous
hikes along with photography hikes.
Cyclists will find on and off road biking
opportunities. Check the Hawai‘i Bike
League website (hbl.org) for free group

routes across the island. HBL sponsors
two major cycling events open to everyone: the Honolulu Century Ride,
Hawai‘i’s largest cycling event, and the
Hale‘iwa Metric Century Ride on the
North Shore.

self in the multi-cultural heritage, art,
and history of the Hawaiian archipelago,
it’s understandable why O‘ahu is called
“The Heart of Hawai‘i.” May is Mele Mei
(melemei.com), a month long celebration of the musical arts of the Hawaiian
Islands. The signature sounds, dazzling
talent, and amazing variety of Hawai‘i’s
music, composers, and culture will be revealed at workshops, concerts, and musical awards shows.
Honolulu is an art lover’s city with
world-class attractions. Bishop Museum (bishopmuseum.org), built in memory of a beloved 19th century Hawaiian
princess, is a treasure chest of Pacific
and Hawaiian island culture and natural
history. The recently opened Pacific Hall
explores the traditions and customs of
Pacific Islanders with never before seen
archeological finds and digital media
displays. Honolulu Museum of Art (honolulumuseum.org), the state’s first visual
arts museum founded to reflect Hawai‘i’s
multicultural make up, boasts magnificent collections from the Hawaiian Is-
lands and lands around the world.
Hawaiians’ love of the land and the
sea today is a reflection of their enduring dependence on and their active
stewardship of these natural resources.
On the North Shore, Waimea Valley
(waimeavalley.net) is a breathtaking and
sacred spot where visitors can see how
ancient Hawaiians lived and thrived in
an ahupua‘a, a crescent shaped, self-sustaining mountain to sea land division.
On the Windward Coast, discover the
natural wonders of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, renowned for the clear,
turquoise waters teeming with marine
life and the pristine white sand beach.
Learn about the conservation efforts
in the Marine Education Center before
snorkeling. In Leeward O‘ahu, Wild Side
Specialty Tours’ (sailhawaii.com) intimate whale watching and dolphins encounters offer a rare opportunity to experience marine life and support wildlife
conservation efforts. These daily cruises
serve as a platform for the Wild Dolphin
Foundation dedicated to tracking marine
