Internships are a fantastic opportunity to learn
about BP and the nature of our work. You’ll join
our team doing real work on a current project
bringing a fresh perspective while learning
from experienced scientists, engineers and
business and trading colleagues. As energy
demand increases, people all over the world
depend on our ability to find new energy
sources and deliver it safely and sustainably.
To achieve this we know that we need
smart, talented people who want a career
that matches their ambitions and rewards
their efforts. Our internships provide you with
invaluable experience, and the chance to learn
and build skills, and could also provide you
with an opportunity to join us as a graduate.

I am working in the New Well Delivery Team for the
Shah Deniz field as a Geoscience summer intern. A
normal day involves attending a morning operations call
regarding the progress of wells being drilled in the Shah
Deniz followed by project work. My project involves
interpreting and analysing seismic data to identify
potential gas regions in the overburden. I’m really
enjoying the work I currently do, as I get to work
first-hand with real data and contribute to the team.
I’m part of the Unconventional Access Team,
where we screen basins around the world for
shale oil and gas. It’s great to be working on
something that’s so current, and I love hearing
about everybody’s experiences throughout their
careers. I also particularly enjoy attempting to
eat every dish available in the canteen at lunch.
Jessica Lees
– Chemistry
University of Oxford
Location: Saltend, Hull
I’ve joined the Hull Research and Technology Centre as a Chemistry
intern for the summer. A typical day will involve analysing past experiments
and setting up a reactor to run with catalyst under different conditions. I’ll
have a go at calculations using any numerical data I’ve received, and draw
up graphs to present my work. I’d say my time is pretty evenly divided
between practical work, desk time to write up reports and meetings with
others to discuss recent results or new ideas. One of the best things about
working for BP as a Chemist is seeing how small scale lab work influences
decisions when the reaction is then carried out on a larger scale. Making
changes at a larger scale can be costly – both in time and money – so getting
supporting data from small scale experiments helps to influence the bigger
projects and make successful changes. The one thing I’d share about my
experience so far with BP is the surprisingly high level of responsibility
which is given to interns – you really are working on actual projects,
and tasks that your team needs to have completed!
James Hamilton-Wright
– Geoscience
Imperial College London
Location: Aberdeen
I’ve been tasked with constraining sediment
dispersal patterns within the Clair Basin, and
whether climatic, tectonic and/or provenance
changes have affected these through time.
By integrating geological data such as image
log interpretations; and heavy minerals and
sandstone compositions, I can produce
well-considered conclusions which will
help calibrate sediment dispersal models.

Science roles
Adam Connolly
– Geoscience
University of Leeds
Location: Sunbury
My Geoscience internship has involved the creation
of a benchmarking tool for tight gas reservoirs, and it
has been fantastic. I’ve gained invaluable exposure to
periphery disciplines to Geology like Reservoir Engineering
and Commerce which has made me a much better
geoscientist. I love the relaxed atmosphere at BP
– there’s a lot of trust that you will do the right thing,
and it works to benefit everyone.
SCIENCE
Rhiannon Smith
– Geoscience
University of Leeds
Location: Sunbury
I’m working in the Angola Regional Exploration Team.
Angola is one of BP’s largest producing areas and the
team aim to find future oil and gas reserves in this
region. Using mostly seismic data, I map the main
geological units and features in the subsurface and
identify source, reservoir and seal systems which
might produce and trap hydrocarbons. I use this data
to better understand the region and produce risk
maps of potential future drilling locations.
Emily Crowder
– Applied Geophysics
Durham University
Location: Aberdeen
My day involves running and analysing computer modelling for my
project, researching and learning new technical information and going
to meetings to see what exciting projects the rest of my team are
working on. I am working in the North Sea Seismic Delivery
Team – Analysis and my role is Applied Geophysicist. I have been
looking at a geophysical analysis technique called AVO and its 4D
applicability to steep dip reservoirs, using the Machar Field as a case
study. There is a 4D seismic acquisition survey planned for Machar in
2016 and the results of my project are going to inform how this is
carried out and which baseline survey is used. I love how challenging
my project is and how the results of it are actually going to be really
useful and impact the company. Even though it is an individual
project, I have felt really supported by the rest of my team.
Rosie Robson
– Geoscience
Durham University
Location: Sunbury
I’m working on a project involving the creation
of a database to summarise and compare the
key features of tight gas reserves. The best
thing about the internship is that everybody
is really friendly and keen to help, and as a
result, I’m learning so much!
Charles Cooper
– Geophysics
Imperial College London
Location: Sunbury
My typical day involves working with 4D seismic and
meeting with my supervisor to discuss the progress
of my project. I usually go for lunch with my team
or other interns in the canteen or by the lake. I work
as a Seismic Analyst in the Angola Seismic Delivery
Team. My project involves analysing 4D and 3D
seismic; comparing two data sets. The outcome of
my project will have a real impact on how seismic
is used in Angola. I really appreciate this unique
opportunity to work with the best 4D seismic in the
world. I also particularly enjoy working with such a
diverse range of people from different backgrounds
which really highlights BP’s global presence.

Engineering
Alanna Kidd
– Reservoir Engineering
Heriot-Watt University
Location: NSHQ
I’m spending the duration of my internship with
the West of Shetland Reservoir Management
Team, specifically looking at the Schiehallion Field
and the Quad204 project. The project aims to
complete a material balance analysis of a group
of wells in segment two of Schiehallion, where
there is significant uncertainty. This has included
creating Excel sheets, using a programme called
MBAL and some uncertainty analysis.
The thing I have most enjoyed is being part
of a busy team. This has meant I’ve been able
to get a great feel for a reservoir management
team role and how they work together. Laura Steedman
– Mechanical Engineering
Robert Gordon University
Location: Falkirk & Grangemouth
Zoe Preece – Chemical
& Process Engineering
University of Birmingham
Location: Hull
Karen Osborne
– Mechanical Engineering
University of Strathclyde
Location: Aberdeen
I am working within the Forties Pipeline System
Turnaround Team. My role involves assisting
with the Refrigerated Liquefied Petroleum
Gas turnaround. When the plant is shut down
for maintenance for a short period, I act as the
single point of accountability for overseeing valve
replacement and overhauls. I spend a lot of time
liaising with a range of contractors and on the
plant site, giving me great hands-on experience.
I work in the Downstream Technology and
Research Centre, and the main focus of
my internship is optimising the flowsheet
of a process that we are hoping to license
over the next few years. I do a lot of work
on the computers, using programmes
that model the behaviour of reactors
and separators. My favourite thing is the
amount I have learnt about the way in
which projects like this develop throughout
their lifetime, and the different things
which need to be considered.
I work in the Pressure Systems Integrity
Team and we’re responsible for ensuring
pressurised equipment on the platform
is inspected and maintained correctly to
ensure operation within the correct limits.
My project is focused on documenting
the flowlines on the ETAP Platform. I
summarise this information into a technical
note and verify wall thickness calculations
to allow full documentation of changes
which occur. My favourite thing about my
role is knowing I’m completing a useful
piece of work and cooperating with others
to achieve goals.
Darren Smith – Shipping
University of Strathclyde
Location: Sunbury
I work in BP Shipping for the Projects
Technical Team who are involved in the
technical development and rejuvenation
of the entire BP fleet. Aside from
being incredibly challenging, fun
and interesting, the people I’m

Gordon Stewart – BP Projects
University of Edinburgh /
University of Southern California
Location: Staines, London
I am working on the ACG Water Injection Project that is delivering subsea water
injection trees for the Azeri Chirag Gunashli Field in the Caspian Sea, off Azerbaijan.
The work I do varies quite a lot on a weekly basis due to the nature of the project
in its execution phase. My roles have included project managing the manufacturing
process, supporting engineering and deviations, negotiating new contracts and
managing costs. This work has kept me busy and interested and the challenges
I have faced have given me a real insight into the industry.

Engineering roles
Tom Lawson – Wells
University of Portsmouth
Location: Aberdeen
At BP there is no such thing as a typical
day! There is always something different
and new going on like a ‘Lunch and Learn’ or
a site visit. I work within the drilling discipline
of Wells Engineering, and currently I am
working on a project looking into simulating
‘Extended Reach Drilling’. It’s really pushing
the boundaries of what is possible.
Craig Lawson – Project
Services
University of Edinburgh
Location: Leatherhead
Joining Project Services from a different
technical background has been challenging
but an experience I have definitely enjoyed!
Working as part of the Cost Control Team
on one of BP’s biggest construction projects
(Shah Deniz 2), alongside industry specialists,
has been truly fantastic. My role has been
very hands-on and involved supporting my
team to meet business needs on a daily
basis. I have had particular involvement
in preparing monthly progress reports to
submit to partners and senior management.
Yash Dongre – Control &
Automation Engineering
Imperial College London
Location: Sunbury
I am a Control & Automation (C&A) intern
working in the Instrument, Control &
Electrical (ICE) Team in Sunbury. Being a
C&A intern, my project naturally involves
control loops and their tuning. I have also
been involved in some basic HMI design
as well as implementing a new controller
in Aspen HYSYS. Working closely with
people from other ICE disciplines has given
me an insight into the behind-the-scenes
work that is so crucial on all of BP’s assets.

Accounting, reporting and control (arc)
Phil Schade
City University
Location: Sunbury
Commercial Integrated Supply and Trading (IST)
Emily-Jane Randall
University of Oxford
Location: Canary Wharf
I’m working with the performance team in
operations, so daily activity often involves
talking to a lot of people as we work with
the whole of the Operations Team in Canary
Wharf. I’m currently running with four projects
and my biggest project involves creating
a standardised leave booking system for
120 people: it’s been a huge challenge!
My favourite aspect of my role is the amount
of face time I get to have with other people
around IST, every day is different for me
and I almost always meet someone new!
Commercial Downstream
Tom Dobson
Sheffield Hallam University
Location: Hull
I’m working within the Commercial Team
as a Commercial Analyst. My role involves
preparing and delivering Market Reports as
well as providing forecasts and commentary
on the industry. As I’m a year-long intern I
don’t have a specific project, instead I have a
number of roles and responsibilities that I have
to perform on a day-by-day or week-by-week
basis. Certainly the variety of responsibilities I
have and the people I meet whilst performing
in my role, are a huge part of why I love going
to work each morning.
7
Business and Trading roles
Currently I am half way through my summer
ARC internship. I have only been here for just
over one month now but I have been exposed
to so many different projects. I am responsible
for my own main project of doing a Supplier
Audit Charge-out to different regions around
the world. I also have other ad-hoc tasks such
as journal entry corrections and continuous
improvement of loan spreadsheet templates.
Not only have I been putting into practice my
knowledge gained at university, but I am also
learning new skills that will be valuable for
my future accounting career. The amount of
responsibility and variety I have been given
makes my work a rewarding experience.
Commercial Downstream
George Landers
University of Surrey
Location: Hull
My typical day involves a range of activities
varying from financial modelling to data
analysis, from creating materials for investors
to website management. No one day is the
same, despite being office based, I often go
out around the site working closely with all
types of engineers. I work within the Chemicals
Park Team here in Hull. My favourite thing
about my role is the diversity it brings. Despite
not being involved in an engineer’s discipline, I
am constantly exposed to their work and the
chemicals site. Being based in Hull we gain
first-hand exposure to a fully operational
chemicals park.
Commercial Integrated Supply and Trading (IST)
Khalida Abdulrahim
University of Liverpool
Location: Canary Wharf
I work within the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Origination Team, whose responsibility is to structure,
negotiate, and execute long-term LNG deals. I find this to be one of the most interesting benches
within IST because it’s a very commercially intensive role with an emphasis on relationship-building
and negotiation. My typical day involves sitting in with the team on meetings with Legal and Tax
to draw up contracts and meeting with potential business partners. What I enjoy most about my
role is the opportunity to watch negotiations in progress. I also appreciate that my role gives me
a chance to work with other teams, as it has allowed me meet a really wide range of people.
Commercial Upstream
Accounting, Reporting and Control (ARC)
Jimmy Watkins
London School of Economics
Location: Sunbury
Julius Mersmann
WHV Koblenz
Location: Sunbury
I’m working in Commercial Operations for
North Africa, on three projects mainly based
in Morocco. A typical day starts with a video
conference with Libya or Egypt. There is also
sometimes a meeting with Houston in the
afternoon. My favourite project is a research
study on power generation up to 2030. This is
particularly important because it’s in an area
that is very fresh and only just opening up, so
there is not much of an initial knowledge base;
sometimes my team even ask me questions
about it!
I’m working in the Segment Control Team,
first supporting the team during the busy
quarter close and then working on a few
independent projects. I don’t have one single
project, but my main one is about proposing
improvements to the existing quarter-end
reporting processes and then, together with
the team, rolling them out on segment level.
My favourite thing about my role is the broad
exposure to the whole Upstream business.
Commercial Downstream
Commercial Upstream
Barney Jeffcoat Dick
Durham University
Location: Aberdeen
I’m working in the Commercial Operations
Team looking at the Forties Pipeline System
in the North Sea. My project involves looking
at how BP allocates processed oil and gas
products to companies who put oil into
the pipeline at the other end, as well as
creating a map of all of BP’s Joint Ventures
in the North Sea. My project requires me to
use a really wide range of skills, from the
statistical analysis I’ve learned in my degree,
to the ability to reach out to people in other
teams; although this last part is easy because
everyone’s so friendly.
Tom Jervis
University of Birmingham
Location: Hemel Hempstead
I work in the Sales and Marketing Team
focusing on data accuracy using a market
intelligence and demand forecasting tool.
I have a number of different projects, the
biggest of which is improving the accuracy
of our forward looking business metrics.
The best thing about my role is the amazing
amount of advice and support I have got from
teams based in the office and around the
world; everyone has a different take.

“The most surprising thing about my internship has been having
to learn some Chinese words to understand the work of our

“The best part is that I get to do
something cool everyday. There’s
always something interesting going

“The best experience so far was probably completing the
‘Confined Space Entry’ course and getting the chance to

The echoes inside were impressive!” Laura
