Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Prayer for Independence Day
Dear God,
as we celebrate today
with fireworks and festivals,
help us never to forget the
reason for our joy.
Help us remember that
our rights to life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness
were signed into our heritage
with the willing blood of American patriots.
Most of all, help us remember
that the rights of all people
are more than words on a document,
and that all people have rights
because you have given us the dignity of human life.
Grant freedom to all,
and give us the strength to protect the rights of
others.
Amen.
A Family Perspective………..…..by Bud Ozar
Our nation is blessed with so many opportunities
our lives are often frenzied as we try to take advantage of all the possibilities. As we celebrate our
Independence this weekend, perhaps we need to be
aware of our dependence on fashion, fad and cultural pressure to consume.
Marriage Moments……...……..by Susan Vogt
Independence Day. How much independence is
good in a marriage? Certainly husband and wife
should be able to stand on their own two feet and
not rely on their spouse for identity and self-worth;
BUT interdependence is better. What do you depend on your spouse to do around your home?
Parenting Pointers………….....by Susan Vogt
July 6 is Eid El Fitre (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Eid_al-Fitr) - an Islamic feast similar to Easter. It is a
day when the fasting of Ramadan ends and Muslims feast. Religious ignorance is not good for our
society. Teach your child about how others know
God.

MY CHILD?? A STATISTIC?
80% of kids stop practicing the faith at some point
during college. There is a way to keep our kids
(grandkids) connected to the faith. Go to
www.diopitt.org/newmanconnection and fill out the
quick online form. We only need their first and last
name and the school they will be attending. A
Catholic campus minister at their college will be able
to reach out to them and invite them to participate in
campus ministry. It takes less than 2 minutes to do
and it might be the most important thing you do for
your loved one as they graduate high school

“Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare what he has done for me.”
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Pastor’s Corner
Father Lou Vallone
(Full disclosure: this is a summer rerun from several
years ago)
This week is the celebration of the Declaration of
Independence—the birthday of the United States as
a sovereign government and a new nation—thereby
creating a new nationality of people. The consequences of that act are literally uncountable, but an
insight can be gotten from the following article which
appeared anonymously on the internet, but it was
written by an Australian in response to an offer in a
foreign paper to reward killing an American, any
American:
"An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish,
German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An
American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African,
Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani, or Afghan. An
American may also be a Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many
other tribes known as native Americans.
An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or
Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims
in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference
is that in America they are free to worship as each of
them chooses. An American is also free to believe in
no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not
to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to
speak for the government and for God.
An American is from the most prosperous land in the
history of the world. The root of that prosperity can
be found in the Declaration of Independence, which
recognizes the God given right of each person the
pursuit of happiness.
An American is generous. Americans have helped
out just about every other nation in the world in their
time of need. When Afghanistan was overrun by the
Soviets years ago, Americans came with arms and
supplies to enable the people to win back their country!
As of that morning of September 11, Americans had
given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan.
July 3, 2016
Americans welcome the best, the best products, the
best books, the best music, the best food, the best
athletes. But they also welcome the least. The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse
of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest
tossed. These in fact are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers
the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better
life for their families. I've been told that the World
Trade Center victims were from at least 30 other
countries, cultures, and first languages, including
those that aided and abetted the terrorists.
So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler
did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao TseTung, and every bloodthirsty tyrant in the history of
the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing
yourself. Because Americans are not a particular
people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who
holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.”
On the observance of the creation of the United
States and therefore of “Americans” we wish everyone a happy holiday, and may God bless America
and all true Americans.
“Blessed be God who refused me not my prayer or his kindness!”
