SUNSMART BUSSELTON FESTIVAL
OF TRIATHLON
Busselton / 30 Apr-2 May
WELCOME
Welcome to the 2016 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro,
one of Western Australia’s premier international sporting
events.
I would like to acknowledge all the sponsors who support
this free public event and the many volunteers who give
up their time to make it happen.
As the third stop on the Association of Professional
Surfers 2016 Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour, the
Drug Aware Margaret River Pro attracts a competitive field
of surfers from around the world, including Kelly Slater,
Taj Burrow and Stephanie Gilmore.
If you are visiting our extraordinary South-West, I hope
you take the time to enjoy the region’s premium food and
wine, underground caves, towering forests and, of course,
its magnificent beaches.
In fact the world’s top 36 male surfers and top 18 women
will take on the world famous swell at Margaret River’s
Surfer’s Point during the competition.
Margaret River has become a favourite stop on the world
tour for the surfers who enjoy the region’s unique forest,
wine, food and surf experiences.
CINÉFESTOZ FILM FESTIVAL
Busselton / 24-28 Aug
Since 1985, the State Government, through Tourism
Western Australia, and more recently with support from
Royalties for Regions, has been a proud sponsor of the
Drug Aware Margaret River Pro because it provides the
perfect platform to show the world all that the Margaret
River Region has to offer.
Events, such as the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, form
an important part of the State Government’s strategy to
grow the value of tourism to $12 billion by 2020. They are
important because they add to the State’s vibrancy, raise
awareness of Western Australia and help attract visitors
who inject billions of dollars into the economy.

FOREWORDS
Paul Speaker
WSL CEO
Greetings everyone and welcome
to another season of world-class
surfing in the beautiful Margaret
River region of Western Australia.
Each year, the world’s best male and
female surfers journey to this part
of the world, where the tremendous
community and the beautiful
coastline never fail to deliver one of
the most memorable events on tour.
We’re coming off arguably the most
exciting season in our storied 40-year
history and we’re already off to a
phenomenal start to 2016.
Margaret River caps off the
celebrated Australian leg of the
Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship
Tour season and I’d encourage all of
you to come down and enjoy the best
surfing in the world happening in the
live arena.
Once again, thank you for your
hospitality and we look forward to
seeing you all very soon.
Maree De Lacey
Healthway Acting Executive Director
Healthway is delighted to be a co-sponsor of the Drug Aware Margaret River
Pro for 2016. We have a strong partnership with surfing in Western Australia.
Together, Healthway and Surfing WA have delivered many programs and
events including grassroots learn to surf programs in schools and this great
international event that is part of the prestigious world championship tour for
the world’s surfing stars.
Surfing has been progressive when it comes to promoting health messages.
Back in the 1970’s surfing greats Tom Carroll and Jodie Cooper were among the
first sporting household names to promote Smoking? No way! the non-smoking
message for young people. Since then, surfing has embraced messages like
Quit, SunSmart and Drug Aware.
In partnership with Healthway, surfing events are healthy environments that
are smoke free, like the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro, with healthy food
options and promotion of sun protection.
Drug Aware encourages young people to be aware that recreational drug use
is not safe and can have bad consequences for their health, social life, family,
work and finances. Drug Aware also gives information about drugs and drug
use and support on how to make informed choices.
The Drug Aware message has been very well received when promoted at
Healthway sponsored events. Four out of every five people who attend an event
where Drug Aware is promoted say they are aware of the message and the
majority say they understand what it means. It’s great to see the Drug Aware
message getting through.
Thank you surfing and the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro for helping to
promote the important health message.

Mark Lane
Surfing Western Australia CEO
On behalf of Surfing WA, I welcome everyone to the 2016
Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. It is exciting to once again
see the world’s best surfers heading back to Western
Australia to not only enjoy the waves but all this region has
to offer.
2016 marks the 31th anniversary of the event – an event
that has been well supported by surfers and spectators over
the years - regarded globally as one of the most consistent
surf locations in the World.
Be sure to keep an eye out for all the action out of the
water. The fusion of surf, art and music will allows us all to
celebrate the remarkable lifestyle that surfing has to offer.
The continued support of our valued sponsors has again
allowed us to raise the quality of the event. I would like
to thank them for all for supporting the event over many
years forward to working with them into the future to fuel
and expand its popularity to even greater levels on the
coming years.
This year we welcome the addition of a third surfing
location – North Point. Combined with the number of other
quality surfing locations nearby and the numerous vantage
points to view the action around the contest –2016 year is
shaping up to be our biggest year yet.

Why DO SURFERS LOVE
Margaret River?
Joel Parkinson (AUS)
The adventure of it, driving to the
waves and visiting all the places,
I like the elements you know, getting
hit by a cold front. And the wineries, beer
and food – it’s just a great place.

to lavender body products. The wineries
exceeded all my expectations, especially
the lesser - known smaller spots that make

Obviously the wineries, the waves, but the one thing I
really like is how quiet it is. I really like quiet places.

Freddy Patacchia Jnr (Hawaii)
I love the early mornings in Margaret River – going to
any café and have breakfast and coffee. I like to go for a
morning surf before the sun even comes up, getting a little
bit scared thinking there’s some big fish out there, and
then coming in from great little surf and warming up with
a good coffee, scrambled eggs and bacon, yep, that’s my
favourite part about Margaret River.

The things I like about Margaret River besides the waves
are the dirt roads to the waves – feels like an Indiana
Jones style adventure.

It’s sick over there! I love the chocolate factory, it’s pretty
deadly, and surrounded by wineries and breweries, you
