The Apache Junction City
Council, project partners,
business representatives and
staff celebrated the completion of the North Apache
Trail road improvements
with a brief ribbon cutting
ceremony on Oct. 28. This
infrastructure improvement
was one of the projects identified in the Downtown Redevelopment and Implementation Strategy adopted by the
Council three years ago.
The North Apache Trail, in
the heart of Apache Junction’s
downtown, is the second
stretch of road that reflects the
“traditional downtown Main
Street look,” the first being
Plaza Drive west of Mountain
Health and Wellness. The improvements include on-street
angled parking, landscaping
enhancements, wide pedestrian sidewalks, and street
light poles with banners supporting the new downtown
AJ brand.
In the past, this short segment of roadway in the core
of downtown simply felt like
a pass-through. The intent of
City leaders and staff celebrated the ambitious N. Apache Trail improvements
during a ribbon cutting ceremony last week. Attending were (left to right): Emile
Schmid (City Engineer), Brad Steinke (Development Services Director), George
Hoffman (City Manager), Councilmember Jeff Serdy, Mayor John Insalaco, Joel
Stern (City Attorney), Councilmember Dave Waldron, Vice Mayor Robin Barker,

this roadway design is to create a safe, inviting, gathering
place and shopper-friendly
area for residents and visitors to enjoy. Mayor Insalaco
said of the new design, “It
makes it a lot more pedestrian
friendly. People used to use it
as a highway going to the lake
not realizing it was part of our
downtown core.”
It is also hoped that by investing in the public infrastructure, it will become
more attractive to private investment and developers, and
provide new opportunities for
retailers and service providers to locate in the heart of
downtown. Vice Mayor Barker said, “We want to create a
central area that is friendly to
the consumer, an area that has
the ambience that we would
like for our community. We’re
actually creating a continuity
of theme.”
North Apache Trail was a
two-phased project, phased
because much of the funding
to pay for the construction
came from federal grants. The
amount available from each
grant and the timing of the
grants being awarded caused
the project to be built in phases. The city opted to do actual
construction during the summer months to lessen the impact on businesses by avoiding the prime time winter
months. The businesses along
North Apache Trail remained
open throughout the phases.
While construction is never
easy, the end result is hoped
to add to the revitalization of
the area and attract additional

Last Sunday morning, Frank
Augustine was packing up his
gear after spending the night
in the Superstitions when he
heard screams from his fellow
campers. A parachute and its
human payload had just appeared from the Dacite Cliffs
above the Don’s Camp parking lot at the Peralta Trailhead
and landed nearby. Augustine
looked up to see another parachute drifting down into the
same area and quickly took
some photos with his phone.
“I was looking up at the cliffs,
thinking about my mother
who loved this area,” said
Donald Peterson, one of the
campers, “when I saw a body
falling from the mountain. I
screamed like a little girl—as
if that would have stopped his
fall—then the chute opened
and it looked like he was going to hit the rocks, but he recovered and landed.”

War Veterans Association to
be the Grand Marshal.
Rowley, a native of Mesa and
ex-POW (Prisoner Of War),
entered into the US Army in
1948. In Korea, Nov. 1950,
Rowley’s unit got trapped in
the 2nd Infantry Division’s rear
guard. Several soldiers from his
division tried to escape on foot
in subzero temperatures. The
Chinese soldiers surrounded
Rowley along with fellow
soldiers and were taken prisoner. He was incarcerated 33
months. He returned to Arizona
and graduated from Arizona
State University with an education degree. He has taught in
the Mesa schools for 31 years,

$420,000 on the table in FY 2014
The City of Apache Junction
is expected to receive an estimated $120,000 in FY 2014
federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)
funds from the Arizona Department of Housing Regional
Account (RA). The City also
intends to apply for up to
$300,000 in FY 2014 CDBG
funds from the State Special
Projects (SSP) account. CDBG
funds must be used to benefit
low-income persons and areas,
alleviate slum and blight or
address urgent need. Based on
citizen input, as well as local
and state planning objectives,
several potential projects have
been selected to be forwarded
to the State of Arizona with a
request for funding.
A public hearing will be held
at the regularly scheduled
City Council meeting at 7
p.m. on Nov. 19, 2013 at the
Apache Junction City Council

Superstition Blvd. to discuss
the potential projects. It is expected that the City Council
will select the final projects at

CAC Offers Biotech Degree Supervisors Want Answers
University transfer program starts next semester

2014 semester, Central Arizona College will become the
only two-year institution in
the state of Arizona to offer an
associate of science degree in
biotechnology.
Thanks to the U.S. Department of Education’s $3.3 million STEM grant, CAC has
begun acquiring biological research technology typically
reserved for large research
universities.
Students who enroll in CAC’s
biotechnology program now
will position themselves to
become instantly competitive
for paid student research positions when they transfer to a
four-year institution.
“Any science students who
are looking for a more personalized, more competitive approach to their education
would be great for this degree,” Crystal McKenna, professor of biology, explained.
“And this isn’t just for biology students. This applies to so
many realms.”
There are other community
colleges in Arizona that offer
associate of applied science
degrees in biotechnology,
but, McKenna says, those degrees typically lead to posi-

The Pinal County Board of
Supervisors have demanded
that Sheriff Paul Babeu explain why an aide in his Sheriff’s Office has deluged the
county with requests for public records pertaining to the
aide’s
personal
lawsuit
against the county.
According to county officials, requests from Sheriff’s
Office Director of Administration Tim Gaffney have resulted in the county spending
“hundreds of thousands of
dollars” in legal fees. Gaffney has filed eight separate
public records requests with
Pinal County in the last 15
months, the majority regarding former County Manager
Fritz Behring and Steve
Miller, the chairman of the
board of supervisors.
Gaffney filed a lawsuit
against Behring and the county in May, claiming he suffered defamation, intentional
injury and intentional infliction of emotional distress,
among other things.
Babeu has acknowledged in
an e-mail that Gaffney was
“acting at my direction in the
request of public records from
Pinal County.”
One of Gaffney’s requests
was for all emails between
Behring and Miller. The request didn’t specify a time
frame so it covers every email
ever sent between the two
men. Supervisor Anthony
Smith said it’s an egregious
waste of taxpayer dollars on
the part of Babeu and PCSO.
On Wednesday, October 30,
the five-member board of supervisors voted 4-1 to send a
letter to Babeu asking him if
Gaffney made the requests in

An extremely dedicated
group of G-model railroad
volunteers have been “workin’ on the railroad” through
this long, hot summer and the
results are ready for viewing
at the Superstition Mountain
Museum.
A temporary, but beautifully
done, large G-model train
exhibition has been erected on
the east side of the Apacheland
barn with the display continuing into the southeast corner
of the barn so the engines and
railroad cars can be safely
stored under a roof every
evening. It is amazing to see
the attention to detail evident
in the Old West buildings and
desert landscaping comprising
the setting.
The many volunteers who
have been working so hard
to put it together are to be
congratulated and thanked for
their perseverance in working
through the extra warm summer to get a display ready for
the winter season. The railroad
volunteers will also be putting in time as “engineers”
overseeing and managing the
display throughout much of
the winter. The many young
(and older) train enthusiasts
who visit the museum this
winter can see firsthand the
historic trains and learn about
the prominent role these trains
took in the settlement of the
West.
Plans for the permanent
train exhibit at the museum
are huge! The group has also
been putting their heads together with Fred Olds, the
gentleman who designed the
well-known train exhibit at
Cardon Children’s Hospital
in Phoenix. Fred has created a
layout that will fit right in with
the museum’s historical atmosphere and help further future
educational endeavors.
This proposed 4,000-squarefoot permanent model train
exhibit is to be located south
of the barn on the hillside
slope between the barn and
the 20-stamp mill. The layout
that the trains run through
will be central Arizona. The
trains, buildings and all of the
features will be historically accurate. The centerpiece of the
layout will be a turn-of-thecentury mining town named
“Dutchman’s Gulch.” There
will be a mining operation including a stamp mill, authentic
town buildings, a cattle ranch,

Museum Director Barb Atkinson has looked at all of the
plans and states, “This will be
a museum-quality model railroad layout when finished.”
Just the preliminary block
work and the foundation for
the train layout are expected to
cost about $3,500. It is hoped
that the money can be raised
through donations to make this
ambitious dream a reality. The
railroaders’ volunteer group is
ready to do the work; all that is
needed is the funding.
One aspect of the fundraising will center on several
historic locomotives that the
group wants to add to the
collection. They will cost
around $400 to $500 each.
It is hoped that donors can
be found who would like to
buy one of the locomotives
for the privilege of having
their name inscribed on the
locomotive. This offer is
open to individuals, groups
and businesses.
The fundraising is getting underway this fall and will continue until the goal is reached
and the exhibit becomes a

Valley Adult Resources has
teamed up with A New Leaf:
MesaCan to provide Certified
Application Counselor training that will enable volunteers
to assist fellow community
members on how to use the
health insurance marketplace
to research, select and enroll in
health insurance plans that best
meets their needs.
All that is required to be a Certified Application Counselor are:
• Good customer service and
communication skills.
• Ability to enthusiastically work
with diverse persons, bi-lingual
(English and Spanish a plus)
• Basic computer literacy
• Age 55 or older
• U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident
• Complete a five hour Certified
Application Counselor training
class and successfully pass the
CAC exam.
• Commit to serving a minimum

Resident Pleads For A Trashless Desert
Leslie Bennett moved to the
Apache Junction area from
Gilbert three years ago and
was surprised at the amount
of trash on the trails as she
hiked and rode her horses in
the desert.
“I cannot sit back and do
nothing about it. One of the
sites is big enough to see
from Google Earth,” she
pointed out. She’s had metal
go through a hiking boot and
debris on the trail has injured
her horses. She often uses the
horses to spot and mark trash
sites for cleanup events.
Bennett has found names and
addresses on papers littering
the desert and has returned
the bagged trash with notes to
dispose of their trash properly.
Although she’s spent a lot of
her own time doing cleanup
and photographing evidence,
she wants others to be aware
of the problem and invites
them to help out at an upcom-

The gravy train is back on the tracks, the economic engine
a runnin’ and the demise of our Sonoran desert being out
done by the good weather in “the valley on the run,” Phoenix
metro. Look no further than East Mesa at Ellsworth Rd. in
the once remote region of our dear to heart desert the BLOB
(batter land of beauty) is bubbling ,boiling and consuming
our loving desert like a Pac -man on steroids.
The economic engine is chugging along once again the desert has gotten a reprieve for the last few years but, as the
Allstate spokesman with the gruffly voice stated in his commercial heard across our radio dial, you can hear hammering
and pounding in Arizona once again, “like that’s a good
sign?”
Well to the developers “yes” and the warm weather seekers
who love the shopping malls, amenities at the finger tips…
four car garages but, how about us who’d rather see the desert than humongous homes with four car garages popping up
in our Sonoran desert like a fish out of water!”
Yes the engines running again and the bulldozers fired up
but, what happens when all these new transplants by the
thousands want to venture into our wilderness our loving Sonoran desert but, it’s not there or is but, too overcrowded to
enjoy… the tranquility the desert provides because the recreational areas (bike trails, hiking ,lakes, rivers are trampled by
the masses in sunglasses.
People are working, construction is back in business, the
economy is stabilizing. Unfortunately the silent desert and its
creatures who wander into these new Master planned gated
communities because their home is under street lights and
four car garages will suffer… to accommodate the homo-sapiens who have moved into the once desolate area.

Disagrees with Ms. Schmidt
Well, Carolyne Schmidt in last week’s “News” restated the
now common media rewriting of Clinton Era history with
Hillary about to be a candidate. The ‘lame’ stream media
gives credit where little is due and erases a record number of
scandals (i.e. the list to impeach him had a long list of illegalities beyond lying about Monica to a grand jury), the Senate did not allow time for the House to document them - Republicans out maneuvered again.
History has been my profession and hobby, I do not take
kindly to its rewriting by blind extremists at either end of the
political spectrum. At one end we have folks calling abortion
murder and no agreement on what must be - a practical immigration bill. On the other extreme there is a long list of
political goals based on the Liberal Utopia dreams that ignore ever stronger genetic science that tells us we are not
born equal, able, honest or gentle and cannot be molded into
ideal selfless citizens by government schools and fiat! (“If
only there were no more rich or poor people, or nations, and
that terrible competition that we have with Capitalism - it
isn’t fair.)
Clinton did not create a budget surplus at the end of the
Clinton’s last two years anymore than then his government
created the economic recession during his last 6 months.
The Dot Com Tech Bubble did that! First by greatly increasing tax yields from stocks, then, the opposite for a few years.
The former was helped with the Balanced Budget Act and
Welfare Act that was forced on Clinton by a Conservative
Congress and an upcoming election. Google up the political/
economic year - for those that have no political memory, and
for those that have a habit of ‘cherry picking of facts’ and/or
a habit of distortion and exaggeration for their great cause
and party that will save us all - wether we like it or not.
As for the Afghanistan War the record shows it was close to
unanimous Congressional approval after 9/11. The Iraq War
had near two third’s approval including the Clintons after the
UN Inspectors and Saddam himself said he had WMD - he
did gas 4,000 Kurds there is no doubt. Now the media allows
extremists to whisper Bush lied to them - they were brainwashed - I don’t think Hillary will try that one, it killed the
first Gov. Romney chances in a presidential primary.

This is an open letter to Carolyne L. Schmidt (letter to the
editor Oct. 21, 2013).
I would like to know where you get the ridiculous notion
that Barrack Obama has spent less than any other president in
recent years. His Keynesian economics have made the deficit
infinitely worse, creating a future nightmare for our future
generations. You also write about Obama stopping wars, last
time I checked, our military is still fighting in Afghanistan.
Obama even would have taken the US into another fiasco in
Syria, had Putin not called his bluff and positioned the Russian naval fleet off the Syrian coast. Putin came out of that
episode looking more a statesman than Barrack Obama! You
also denigrate Congressman Ted Cruz, who many believe is
one of the voices of sanity in Congress for opposing Obama.
Cruz is fighting for fiscally responsible government and an
end to the fiasco known as “Obamacare”. That website to
sign up is sure working so well, isn’t it? Many employers,
including many in the valley, have cut their staff down to less
than 30 hours a week to get around this disaster. Do you favor a program that would make us a nation of part-time employees? Now let’s look at your remarks regarding entitlement programs such as food stamps. These programs are
being abused by folks who feel that someone owes them
something. The American taxpayers owe nothing to those
who are too lazy to find employment. You’re right on one
thing; many of us do want OUR country back, by undoing
the 5 years of damage done by Obama and the Democrat

Veterans Day
Veterans Day properly and
appropriately honors our
veterans, but it also honors
an ideal that now seems naive but still survives as a
matter of international law.
Veterans Day originally
honored the truce that ended
the fighting in World War I
and was officially named
“Armistice Day.” As I was a
youngster growing up, that’s
what people still called it.
In the stunned aftermath of
World War I, the combatant
nations truly believed that
they had fought the war to
end all wars. Indeed, the
United States and France
collaborated on a treaty that
its signers hoped would effectively outlaw war among
civilized nations.
Called the Kellogg-Briand
pact, named for the U.S.
secretary of state and the
French foreign minister who
negotiated it, the treaty
called for “the renunciation
of war as an instrument of
international policy.” The
treaty was based on the idea
that disarmament and a
small military are the best
way of assuring the peace.
Signed in 1928 at the White
House, the treaty began to
unravel almost immediately
with the Japanese invasion
of Manchuria in 1931 and
the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1933. The United
States, a nation that thought
itself done with war in 1928
would soon be calling on a
new generation of young
men to fight another one.
In 1954, under President
Eisenhower, Armistice Day
officially became Veterans
Day to honor all of our veterans, whose numbers currently stand at over 23 million. In 1968, the holiday
was moved to the fourth
Monday in October. But in a
rare instance of Americans
giving up a three-day weekend, 10 years later it was
moved back to Nov. 11, in
honor of the special significance of the guns of war
falling silent on the 11th
hour of the 11th day of the
11th month of 1918.

honoring our veterans and
those now in uniform fighting on our behalf in Afghanistan and Iraq, and one of

Veterans Day is an important holiday, but this year, as
our nation welcomes a new
generation of soldiers returning from war, it’s a sobering
one. A disproportionate
number of veterans, who
make up about 13 percent of

the population, end up battling substance abuse, domestic violence, mental illness and a plethora of other
maladies associated with the
stresses of military service.
It is estimated that a third of
all homeless people and a
fifth of all suicide victims in
the United States are veterans. You’ve heard the statistics before. I’m not telling
you anything you don’t already know.
But you should also know
that a great many politicians
who were enthusiastically
“supporting the troops” ten
years ago have seemingly
forgotten about the troops
now that they really need our
support.
And have you noticed that
many of today’s most out-infront, leading the big parade
patriots didn’t bother to take
advantage of the opportunity
to serve their country back
when they were of military
age?
Most annoying to this particular veteran is that many
elected officials are so busy
waving the flag that they
don’t have time to worry
about keeping the promises
that were made to our veterans. Perhaps they should let
the veterans take care of the
flag while they take care of
keeping their promises.
Preferably, sometime before the next war.

Armistice (Veterans) Day
comes and goes each year.
We remember the men and
women who have paid the
ultimate price so we as
Americans may enjoy our
freedom.
The American soldier has
fought around the globe defending this country. Most of
these soldiers return home
and become average citizens
once again. There are some
of these men who were shell
shocked for rest of their lives
because of the horrors on the
battlefield. Today we call this
the Post-Traumatic Syndrome Disorder. Many of
these men sought the solitude of nature and became
recluses. Such a man was
Edwin Buckwitz.
Hikers, prospectors, horsemen, outfitters, and cowboys
often passed an old man hiking in and out of the Superstition Wilderness Area along
the Dutchman’s trail between
1965 and 1993. This man
avoided contact and stayed
to himself, only speaking
when spoken to. He hiked silently along the trail with a
large cardboard box on his
pack frame, never volunteering information to anyone.
Outfitters, who were often
visitors to the wilderness,
called him “Spook”.
Spook’s real name was Edwin Buckwitz. He was born
on July 6, 1924, on a South
Dakota wheat farm near
McLaughlin. He was the
middle child in a family of
seven. Edwin was very shy
and a true introvert. This man
spent most of his life avoiding contact with people. He
preferred to be alone.
After graduation from high
school he joined the United
States Army Air Corps in
1942. This was the thing to
do at this period in American
history. Edwin served with
the 15th Army Air Corps and
was stationed in Italy during
World War II. He was a waist
gunner on a B-24 Liberator
and flew many missions over
Germany. Edwin once told
his brother about the time he

took off his flight jacket on a
mission and hung it next to
the waist gun aperture. When
the flight was over he found
the jacket filled with bullet
holes. Another story Edwin
told his brother I am sure
played a dramatic role in
shaping Edwin’s life after
the war.
Edwin told the following
tragic story that involved the
loss of his crew and aircraft.
Edwin was grounded one
day. He watched his crew
take off in an overloaded
B-24 filled to capacity with
bombs for the Third Reich.
He then watched helplessly
as the plane stalled, then
crashed. All the crew, his
friends, were lost in a split
second. This event scarred
Edwin’s mind for the rest of
his life.
After Edwin’s short and
dangerous military career he
attended school to become
an electrical engineer. Upon
graduation, he worked for
McDonnell-Douglas in the
mid-1950s. He did drafting
work on the A-3D bomber
and the F-5D fighter escort
plane. He worked for almost
two decades in the aircraft
engineering industry in Cali-

At the age of 45, Edwin decided he would fulfill his life
dream of living with nature
and surviving alone in a wilderness. He wanted to get
away from people and traffic
congestion. Working in the
Los Angeles area would
make anyone want to run
away to the hills. Edwin resigned his job and traveled to
Arizona.
He decided he would devote
the rest of his life to searching for the Peralta Treasure
in the Superstition Wilderness. His goal, if he ever
found the gold, was to build
a modern hospital for all
those who could not afford
medical care.
Many years ago Edwin told
me about the anxiety he felt
the first day he stood at First
Water Trailhead and planned
his first solo trip into the Superstition Wilderness. He
didn’t know whether he
could find water or not. He
had never camped outdoors
before. He wasn’t even familiar with the wildlife of
the Sonoran Desert. He wondered just how long he would
survive in this rugged wilderness with little protection

from the weather and the animals. He was convinced
most animals were harmless
if left alone. He finally made
up his mind not to worry
about broken bones, dehydration, rattlesnakes, lions or
the desert heat. He sincerely
believed, at the time, anything was better than the traffic congestion of California
freeways, streets and the war
he had served in honorably.
He finally convinced himself, he said to me, he was
here to find the gold of Superstition Mountain and to
seek the peace and solitude
of this mountain wilderness.
Edwin lived in East Boulder
and Needle Canyons for
twenty years. He searched
the area with total dedication
believing he would find his
gold. Edwin had an unshakable faith that the Peralta
Mines existed. The last time
I talked to Edwin, he revealed no traces of the young
man who had gone to war,
who had studied electrical
engineering at Wayne State
University in Detroit and
Northrop University in Inglewood, California. His
skin was rough and tanned
like leather from years of exposure to the hot desert sun.
His body was slender and
wiry from decades of walking in the Superstitions and
his hair was gray from age.
Edwin was a simple man, but
well educated. I must admit
I watched Edwin grow older
and he loved every minute of
it. He said growing old put
more time between the present and his memories of the

Grimes finished as the Division II state runner-up at the

This was Grimes’ second appearance at the state tournament. As a freshman in 2012,
he finished 40th overall. You
would think that Grimes’
dramatic improvement in his
second state tournament was
something to be pleased with
but the Prospector sophomore
also has to feel like he let one
slip away.
After opening with a -1 round
of 71 on Friday, Grimes came
back Saturday morning and
birdied five of his first nine
holes on the front side, including four birdies in a row, to get
to -6 for the tournament and
four shots in front of Stadeli.
But Grimes, despite hitting
some quality shots, bogeyed
five of his final nine holes
on Saturday to finish a shot
behind. Stadeli, meanwhile,
offset two bogeys on the back
nine with two birdies, to escape with the one-shot victory.
Grimes had one final chance
to tie Stadeli on the 18th hole
Saturday but his 18-foot birdie
putt came up inches short.
Still, this was the best showing at the state golf tournament since 2005 when AJHS

Volleyball Seniors Say Goodbye

Four Lady Prospector seniors
took the home court one final
time this past Monday when
Apache Junction played host
to Coronado in their final
home volleyball match of the
season. The AJHS seniors
are Tylissa Walker, Makena
Gateb, Sarah Streibich and
Sedona Aulik.
Apache Junction swept the
Lady Dons in three straight
sets, 25-8, 25-14, 25-11, and
coupled with Tuesday’s 2512, 25-21, 25-16 loss to a
very good Safford team, the
Lady Prospectors finished
their season with a 20-11
overall record.
In the win over Coronado,
Brooke McCullen pounded
11 kills, Streibich added
nine kills, three blocks and
10 digs, Aulik had a kill and
handed out 24 assists, Gateb
came up with five kills, Ra-
chel Covarrubias had eight
digs, Casey Reid and Taylor
Gering each had a kill and
Walker served up an ace.
In the loss to Safford, who
improved to 38-6 overall,
Marshall and McCullen both
had five kills, Reid handed
out six assists, and Covarrubias came up with six digs.

Things were hopping at Davis
Field this past Friday night as
Apache Junction High School
combined
“Homecoming
2013” and “Senior Night” into
one giant festivity. Oh yeah,
there was a football game too
as the Prospectors hosted the
McClintock Chargers in their
final game of the 2013 season.
And what a game it turned out
to be.
Despite a statistical advantage for McClintock, running
82 offensive plays to 55 for the
Prospectors, and outgaining
A.J. 426 to 315 in total yards,
the two teams battled toe-totoe like a prize fight. And when
the dust settled, and all the
punches were thrown, it took
an overtime period to declare
a winner.
Tied 41-41 at the end of regulation, the Chargers needed just
one play in overtime to score
their 10-yard touchdown. They
added the PAT to grab a 48-41
lead, and now, it was Apache

other high schools, competed this past Saturday,
November 2 in the Division
III, Section III meet with
state-qualifying at stake.
But results were not available when The News went
to press.
Two AJHS runners, senior
Omar Ewert, and junior
Allyssa Willis, were considered Apache Junction’s best
chances at qualifying for
this year’s Division III state
championships.
At the East Valley Championships hosted by Queen
Creek High School on October 22, Ewert ran 2nd
overall in the boys race for
seniors behind only Brennan Barfuss of Higley. Ewert ran a time of 17:27 while
Barfuss ran 17:24.
Prospector Nyck McCune
ran 4th (18:28) overall in the
boys senior race, and AJHS’
Jamie Zimmerman was 14th
(22:40).
In the girls race for seniors,
Lindsey McMinn was 10th
overall (24:53) and Lady
Prospector Kendra Heninger

In the race for juniors, Diego
Castaneda was 10th overall
(20:10) for boys, while Willis ran 4th overall for girls

wrapped up their off-season
with a 6-4-1 overall record
competing against teams from
Mesa, Gilbert, Queen Creek
and San Tan Valley.
In their post-league tournament, Apache Junction edged
Higley 9-8, edged Combs
11-10, but then fell to Poston
Butte in the championship
game by a 12-3 score.
In that win over Higley, Jenna Skinner led a comeback
with her relief pitching and
at the plate. Skinner gave up
just one hit and no runs in her
relief outing and then had two
hits and two RBI at the plate.
Alyssa Padilla drove in the
game-winning run in her final
at-bat, Adrianna Villaverde
added a triple and three RBI,
and Savannah Penick had a
triple, double and two runs
scored.
In the see-saw battle with
Combs, Jessica Kraps tossed
a complete game and added
a single and RBI. Villaverde
went 2-for-3 and two runs
scored and a RBI, Breanna
Conklin had a run-scoring
double, Penick drove in a run
with a hit, and Brianna Lapp,
Daisy Liguori, Georen Falzone, Illyx Machuca and Kyle
Gossman all added a base hit
with Gossman also picking up
a RBI.
In the championship game,
Melissa Rivera had a solid effort from the mound against
the number one seeded Poston Butte team, Penick had a
triple and a double, Villaverde
added a double, and Padilla
had a single and scored a run.

Apache Junction trailed 2113 after one quarter but regained the lead at halftime,
27-21. After the teams tied
one another at 41-41 in the
fourth quarter, they each had
