With no rhyme nor reason for my column this month, I chose
to write about Goldscheider figurines. While I normally write
about seven items per issue, I happened to have nine different
Goldscheiders, so please bear with me as I add two additional statues to this issue.
In 1885, Friedrich Goldscheider founded the Goldscheider and
Majolica Factories in Vienna. In 1938 the Goldscheider family emigrated to the UK and USA where two brothers, Walter
and Marcel, each opened a ceramic factory. Several of the
Goldscheider artists eventually worked at places such as Augarten,
Keramos, Rosenthal and Meissen. The company used a large
G with Goldscheider circled beneath that for their mark. Later
on Goldscheider added the name Everlast or Goldcrest. The
Goldscheider brothers passed away
in the early
1960s.
This is the
smallest Borzoi
figurine (that I am
aware of) produced
by Goldscheider
and has the Goldcrest
mark.
Measuring 5½″ the
ceramic material is very easily broken. I have three
of these figurines and
I believe two are
broken at an ankle
and one is
mint. These are
one of the easiest to find out of
all of the Goldscheiders,
although not truly
common. Value on these is around $50-$75.
Mexico and USA both
produced a copy of this next
Goldscheider piece. However,
if you look at them side
by side, you can tell that
the Goldscheider is more
refined in looks,
but the piece
itself
weighs
a
lot.
Measuring 13″ x 6½″, this has the newer Everlast mark. Lying
with mouth open panting, this is probably one of the least desired
of all. I believe this is due to the copies which are readily available.
However, the Goldscheider is much more collectable and should
fetch at least $75.
The next two statues I believe to be the earliest Goldscheiders. The
ceramic is
lightweight
and the figures themselves are much more
refined. It is very rare to
see a Goldscheider placed
upon a base but the base
itself is marked with the
Goldscheider stamp as
well as Made in Austria
etched into the ceramic,
which indicates the base is original to the statue. This measures
14″ long x 7½″ tall. As one of the rarer earliest pieces, the value on
this is approximately $175.
This next one has the
same mark and engravings
as the prior one. My thinking
is that it was made as a
mate to the
standing-on-base Borzoi. Measuring 12½″
long x 5″ tall, it is also a hard to find figure and should be valued
around $150.
While not a real
exciting piece, this
is probably one of the
rarest ones. I have never
come across another
Goldscheider like this. It
stands 7½″ tall x 8″ long and
has only the “G” on the bottom of a foot, so it’s hard to tell
was made in Vienna, the UK or

2015 Open Field Coursing Annual Report

For 2015, the Top Open Field Courser was Zagaday owned by Yvonne McGehee and Olga Zilberman. Zagaday defeated 53 hounds
to earn this honor. Due to lack of subscription, the Borzoi Blast Off was not held this spring. The Borzoi Fall Classic was held in
November in Shirley Basin, Wyoming. Entries closed with a limit of twelve. The winner of the Fall Classic is owned by a non-BCOA
member and a BCOA member. The Borzoi resides with the non-BCOA member, though bred by Sandra Moore. During 2015 approximately fifty Borzoi competed in the open field. The points and placements listed below are only indicative of BCOA member-owned
Borzoi and therefore, not indicative of all open field Borzoi.

them to the BCOA Silent Auction or the Live Art Auction that will be held April 15th at the 2016 BCOA
National Specialty in Kansas. You can elect to donate 100% of the proceeds to BCOA or share it with
BCOA 50/50%. Borzoi-related art and collectibles, books, original art, antiques, etc. are preferred. Other
Borzoi/dog related items of interest or value may be accepted such as fancy collars and leads etc.
We will again feature “Earth Borzoi” ART !! We had some beautiful and creative entries last year and we
can’t wait to see what you can do this year!! Let’s show our love of Borzoi, art and the earth with art that
is made in part or all from recycled, re-purposed, up-cycled, rescued, found, 2nd hand etc. materials. The
Borzoi community is FULL of artists, crafters and art collectors. The Earth Borzoi competition is judged
by fellow artists and all entries must be a 50/50 or 100% donation to the Live Art Auction. Donor forms

The Importance of Good Sportsmanship

hen I was first introduced to the world of showing dogs, I had no idea of the complexity of this
sport. I was in my mid-twenties and very active
participating in other sports. Therefore, success in
this “so-called-sport” should be automatic...NOT!
I quickly found out that being an athlete wasn’t the key to success!
Whether the dog is of high or medium quality, you still need to know
what to do with it. You need to know how to show off their attributes
and hide their faults. You need to know what to do when your dog surprises you and doesn’t behave as they do every time at home.
I strongly believe most people entering the world of dog showing find
out very quickly, as I did, how complex handling a dog can be. Many
of these folks don’t have access to classes, or knowledgeable and
good-hearted friends who are ring savvy. In some breeds, a professional handler friend told me, if you’re not in the clubs, or in someone’s camp, you’re rarely spoken to. He proceeded to say the Borzoi
ring is a joy, because there’s a general love for the breed and respect
for each other. I agreed.
I was lucky to have access to advantages that many do not. I was
introduced to dog shows by Dr. Alfred Edlin, a breeder/judge. We
went to handling classes during the winter. In the warmer months we
rotated classes at the homes of people like Barbara Skinner, Carol
Kubiak Zamora, Angela and Peter San Palo, Jim Heard and the late
Barry Ellison. At these classes we evaluated the dogs and handlers
and went through actual ring situations. We even video taped some of
the classes and studied them afterwards over coffee and pastries. For a
rookie like me, this was such a valuable and wonderful experience.
Still, the best experience is the ring! In my early days, Fred had told
me to watch certain handlers in the ring. Notice how they handle temporary misbehaving dogs and how they get the most out of their dogs.
You’ll also notice, they’ll do a fair amount of winning or placements. I
always had someone at ringside to answer any questions I might have.
I took all this experience and knowledge into the ring with me and
felt fairly comfortable until one day, Fred says “I entered two shows
on the same day. You’re going south and I’m going north.” SOLO???
PANIC!!!!!
Without my security blanket, I nervously arrived at ringside. While
waiting for judging, I suddenly started to question everything I
thought I knew. Are bitches judged before dogs, what’s the order of
the classes, what’s the name of this dog at the end of the lead? Seeing
a familiar face (Karen Staudt Cartabona) eased some of my nervousness. She asked, “Where’s Fred?” I told her, “I’m going solo today!”
She smiled.
Once judging started, Karen made sure I knew when to go in, which I
soon was to discover, was the same class as she. Then she wished me
good luck! She really made me feel at ease. I took the points that day!
The last thing Karen said to me was “make sure you bring a catalog
back to Fred. He’d want to know the results of the show today.”
I thought my experience that day was just wonderful. A fellow competitor making sure I presented my dog the best I could. To this day I
try to be a friendly and helpful competitor to all my co-exhibitors.
So you see, I’ve been lucky to be surrounded by people who wanted
me to do the best I can do! They are all lovers of Borzoi and appreciate when a dog is presented well.
There are many new faces each year in the show ring. We as lovers of
the breed need to embrace them and make them feel at home. Should
we approach someone when show after show they obviously have no
clue on how to present their dog? If nothing else we should at least
suggest handling classes and match shows. A tactful, goodhearted
approach with a smile goes a long way.

A huge and very heavy ceramic figurine, this Goldscheider resembles the second one in this column but the mouth is closed and the
head is better proportioned. This is actually one of the newer (but
still old) statues since the
mark is Goldscheider
USA Everlast Corp.
It measures a magnificent 17” long
x 8” tall. With it being
so large, it is difficult to
fit it in even the largest
cabinet you
may
have. However, for me – where there’s a will, there’s a way. Very
difficult to find due to the size and I value this at $400.
Best for last is this stunning Borzoi by Goldscheider that has a little more animation to it by looking backwards. The tail is tremendously long the way you’d hope your real Borzoi would have. It
measures 14” tall x 12” long. This also has the Goldscheider USA
Everlast Corp mark, but on another foot, there is the word “Great”

Aristocrat Mission Statement
The Aristocrat is the official publication of the Borzoi Club of America and is published quarterly in order to inform,
educate and entertain the members by providing historical and current information on the Breed and issues affecting the
well-being of our Borzoi.
Statement of Intent:
It is the intent that the Aristocrat:
• Serve as a record of BCOA and its activities
• To provide a convenient forum for the reporting of statistics on the accomplishments of the members in conformation and performance
events.
Policies
• Deadlines for submission of material for the Aristocrat are February 15, May 15, August 15 and November 15. A separate Specialty issue
may be offered so that the results can be published as soon as possible after the National.
• Deadlines established by the Aristocrat Committee will be strictly adhered to.
• The right to reasonably edit all material or refuse to print material thought to be questionable or not in the best interest of the breed or
Club is reserved by the Aristocrat Committee and the Editor.
• Only signed letters or articles will be accepted for use.
• Only Borzoi-related artwork will be utilized for the cover of the Aristocrat. If artwork is not available for a particular issue then the Club
Logo shall be utilized for the cover.
• The following material will be published in the Aristocrat issue immediately following the National Specialty:
