My love for Dobermans started in 1971 and Chelsea was born into a Doberman-loving household. Although we may not always share the same opinions, our passion and love for the Doberman breed has brought so much joy into our lives through showing, breeding and their companionship. For the past 15 years we have also been involved in the Italian Greyhound breed and have maintained a successful breeding program there as well. We are truly what you’d call a “show family.” When I learned I was pregnant with Chelsea, I immediately went out and bought a Doberman puppy so that the two could grow up together. That puppy was Jasmine, was a black daughter of Ch Grandobe Mighty Convoy, bred by Kaymac Dobermans. Chelsea often referred to Jasmine as ‘Nina’, short for ‘Jasmina’. She was a wonderful dog for her to grow up with and was a great ambassador for the breed. In elementary school, Chelsea insisted that I bring Jasmine into her class for Show-and-Tell. I feel fortunate my daughter has spent her entire life in Dobermans and I know I have her relationship with Jasmine to thank for her devotion to the breed. It was one of the best decisions I made for her. My First Doberman, Eva Dobermans were not my first breed, I actually started with Yorkies in the mid 60s. At the time, Dobermans were the only breed of which I was a bit apprehensive. Fortunately, my first husband Joey proved me wrong the day he brought home a little red girl. The Name Raindance I fell in love with Eva and the breed immediately. She was awesome bitch: great head and lots of bone. Eva’s pedigree was primarily Damasyn and she probably weighed about 80 lbs. She was smart as a whip, loyal and very protective — Joey even did schutzhund training with her. The name Raindance is a tribute to my first show dog, Damasyn the Raindancer. ‘Pharaoh’ was a son of Eva, sired by CH Damasyn The Russian from my first litter in the mid 70s. Perry Phillips handled Pharaoh and I was quickly hooked on showing despite Pharaoh’s short-lived career. Pharaoh tragically died at four years old; he was vWD Affected and bled to death after ripping his stitches postbloat surgery. Since 1971 I have never ever questioned my complete love and devotion for this breed. I didn’t choose the Doberman, the Doberman chose me. In a multitude of ways, Eva proved herself to be outstanding - she had it all and knowing her changed my life. We have many mentors, with my first mentor being Peggy Adamson of Damasyn Dobermans. Peggy was always there to answer any question, from breeding to raising puppies to showing. We feel very fortunate that we 18 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine Our Mentors July/August 2014 are surrounded with so many knowledgeable breeders; throughout the years they have always given sound advice and guidance. We would like to thank Linda and Kelly Marquis, Colleen Nicholson, Estelle Corr, Maria Reilly, CaroleAnn Havener and Bianca Arnold for being there for us. Our introduction into the Italian Greyhound world has offered the opportunity to exchange knowledge with people from other breeds, especially our good friends Pat & Ric Klinger of Retaggio Italian Greyhounds, whose friendship and knowledge has meant a lot to us. Show Beginnings, Kayla and Shiloh While I was busy raising Chelsea showing went on the back burner, although we always had a pair of Dobes as companions. After our male ‘Sultan’ passed away, we started the search for a black bitch, with the hopes of getting back into showing. In 1996 we bought a bitch sired by CH Aleph Godol’s Status Symbol named Double D’s Sugar Shack. Unfortunately ‘Kayla’ did not like to show, but was a great companion for us and taught us many lessons. At her very first dog show, she managed to slip her collar in the ring and get excused - much to our horror. Next came a black Basteque son, Marlord Coverboy V Raindance. Shiloh was indeed my heart dog and the “Reserve King” at dog shows. He never did finish, but he was truly the champion of love. He passed away from melanoma cancer at just shy of nine years old. The Italian Greyhounds of Raindance Though she loves Dobes, Chelsea decided she wanted her “own” breed to show and in 2000 we added our first Italian Greyhound to the household, Am/Can CH Retaggio’s Starry Night. Since then, under Chelsea’s lead, we have bred nearly 20 Italian Greyhound Champions. They include the 2012 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Best of Breed/Best July/August 2014 Bred-By & BBE Group 2 winner, GCH Raindance Mercier and her daughter GCH Raindance Providence of Narwyn, who was Select Bitch at this year’s Westminster Kennel Club show. Chelsea is currently campaigning the #4 Italian Greyhound in the country, GCH Tebo Mente’ The General’s Dance, a daughter of our top producing stud dog CH Raindance Hello Darkness. Our First Doberman Champion, Roxie We were a bit disappointed that we had nothing competitive to show. Finally in 2001, Estelle Corr entrusted us with Roxie, Am/Can CH Kalora’s Ooh La La V Cheriden, a red girl who became our first Doberman champion. She was shown to her American Championship by Kelly Marquis, then quickly finished her Canadian Championship undefeated in five shows with five Best of Breeds and a Group 3, handled by Chelsea. Roxie was spayed due to a suspicious mammary tumor and never had puppies. So once again, we began the search for a foundation bitch. Double D’s Sugar Shack, Kayla Our Foundation, Layla Soon after Roxie was retired and spayed, we approached Kelly Marquis about the repeat breeding of CH Marquis Yes I Am to CH Eastwick’s Meadow Monster, which produced their Best in Show winning CH Marquis Yes I Am Charmed (Marley) in the first litter. From the repeat litter came our Layla, CH Marquis I Am Arya. Layla has become our foundation bitch and with the guidance of Linda and Kelly Marquis, our long-awaited breeding program finally became a reality. Am/Can CH Kalora’s Ooh La La V Cheriden Layla’s Offspring In addition to being an absolute joy to live with, Layla has proven to be a phenomenal producer for us, already with many Champion get including two group winners, a Best in Specialty winner, Top 20 Contender, a Best Puppy in Show winner, several others who are well on their Kayla and Shiloh, 1999 The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 19 Doyerdobes No Kidding V Raindance at 7 months Ch. We are pleased that Layla has given her beautiful front assembly and great temperament to her children. ron Arsenal, gave us our little red girl Delicious (Can CH Raindance Armed and Extremely Delicious) who is currently pointed from Bred-By, handled by Chelsea. The team already finished her Canadian Championship in style: five shows including a Group 1. Brother Stryker (Raindance Right To Bear Arms) is also on his way, with five points and several major reserves after just a handful of shows with Kelly. We hope to have these two finished by the end of this year. Their red brother Sunny (Raindance Son of a Gun) is currently working as a Service Dog for his owner Angela. Layla’s first litter was sired by the incomparable Hunter, BIS BISS CH Cha-Rish Star Quest Blu-J’s. Although all three puppies in the litter were shown, only our keeper from that litter, CH Marquis I Am Neytiri of Raindance, was seriously shown and she finished easily with three majors. Although Neytiri is a big bitch she has great substance, a fantastic topline, is very square and is a great dog to live with. Combining BISS GCh Rauschund’s Aquila V Marquis and Layla produced four exceptional champions for Raindance. ‘Niko’, a Hunter son, is a dog that we had always admired from a puppy. At the time Niko was unproven, so we took a chance. That combination produced BISS GCH Raindance Led Zeppelin of Marquis, GCH Raindance Black Sabbath of Marquis, CH Raindance Genesis of Marquis and CH Marquis My Heart Will Go On. Layla’s litter to John Dolan’s phenomenal Gunner, BIS BISS GCH Tibu- Our favorite litter from Layla was her last, to Colleen Nicholson’s CH Mueller’s Jewel of Kei V Kelview. ‘Kaden’ is littermate to Top 20 Contender BISS GCH Kelview’s Crown Jewel V Mueller. We were always big fans of their dam, Colleen’s beautiful black bitch Gemmi (BISS GCH Kelview’s Gemini V Nova) and became intrigued when her first get started making their debuts in the show ring. Their pedigree also contained three prepotent dogs we’d admired, their sire Zeus (CH Kettle Cove N Rebayla Zeus), his sire Ossa (CH Shatera’s Brass Star) and his sire Hunter (CH July/August 2014 Ch. Marquis My Heart Will Go On Italian Greyhound, Ch. Retaggios Starry Night Cha-Rish Star Quest Blu-J’s). This was our first line breeding in Dobermans, as Kaden’s maternal grandsire is Layla’s littermate, Marquis I Am Brom. on the most magical carpet ride ever. Thank you, Harry and Diane Papazian, for believing in Troy and taking him to a top ranking. We were blessed with a litter of seven beautiful, show quality puppies. This breeding gave us our superstar, Raindance Star Of India. ‘India’ has been in nine shows, already has 10 points with both majors and won Best Puppy in Show at the Connecticut River Working Dog Specialty. Some of India’s littermates are just starting their show career and we are very excited about them. Raindance Amarillo Starlight recently took backto-back Winners Bitch her second weekend out, Raindance Crimson Star has several Reserves, and Raindance Dresden Green will be shown this summer. Troy is also currently in competition for the 2014 AHA Hero Dog Awards and the American Kennel Club Humane Fund Awards for Canine Excellence (ACE). Additionally, Troy was recently highlighted on a TV show called Techknow on the network Aljazeera America for the University of Pennsylvania’s current research involving cancer sniffing canines. Raindance’s First Top 20 Contender, Troy BISS GCH Raindance Led Zeppelin of Marquis, who ranked #6 in DPCA Conformation Statistics for the 2013-2014 year, is a multiple group winner and a specialty show winner. But he is a real hero for detecting breast cancer in his owner and most likely saving her life. Troy has taken us July/August 2014 Future Plans There are so many wonderful plans for the future of Raindance. We are planning to breed CH Raindance Genesis of Marquis (Troy’s littermate) to the Gunner son, CH Marquis Retribution, with puppies hopefully due in September. We are very excited about this linebreeding. Raindance Amarillo Starlight Troy, the BISS, Top 20 finalist and cancer detection dog The Thought Process Behind Each Breeding Each breeding decision is taken very seriously and is discussed at length. We take everything into consideration, health being first and foremost. Temperament is our second Italian Greyhound, Ch. Raindance Mercier in the group ring at Eukanuba The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 21 priority and conformation comes in third. Once we have narrowed down suitable candidates, we then study conformation within pedigrees - not only of the potential stud dog, but also of parents, grandparents and beyond. We want to make sure we are not doubling on weak points and are realistic about knowing what can be fixed in one generation and what would take generations to fix. Having a good grasp on pedigrees is invaluable; we constantly browse through DobeQuest, which we’ve found has been a really great tool for us. The Importance of Health Testing Without health testing, the Doberman would be doomed as a breed. It is really important to take advantage of all the health testing options currently available; it’s our only chance to make sure we’re really breeding healthy dogs. All our Dobes have health testing done regularly, regardless if we are breeding them or not, we just want to make sure everyone is healthy. We even own our own holter. To the Newbies, Words of Advice If you plan to breed your bitch and want a great litter, start out with not only a good bitch, but a great bitch. Stud dogs cannot make miracles with mediocre bitches, so even if you choose a seemingly ideal stud dog for your bitch, don’t be surprised that the puppies have the same faults as the dam. Chelsea always says, if you plant corn, you grow corn; it is better to base your breeding program on something really good to start than to spend many generations to continually fix major faults. Surround yourself with a good mentors, learn pedigrees, look for longevity in lines and know the standard inside and out. Always be critical of your dogs, the future of our magnificent breed is in your hands. Thank you, Doberman Pinscher Magazine, for giving us the opportunity to share our story! 22 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine Above: Chelsea and her Italian Greyhound pack Below: Layla and Kaden litter July/August 2014 Raindance Amarillo Starlight CH Mueller’s Jewel of Kei V Kelview x CH Marquis I Am Arya Owned by: JoAnn Kirsch Bred & Co owned by: susAn & chelseA JAmes Co Bred by: lindA & Kelly mArquis Bianca Bianca (aka - The Brat) Has just started her show career with back-to-back WB/BOW on her 2nd weekend out with Ashley Cuzzolino, for her first points. I had lost a 14 month old male Doberman and was devastated. I got on the DPCA website desperately looking for a breeder with puppies. Susan had a litter due the end of December 2010. I am a veterinarian by profession and I was very impressed with the medical testing that had gone into this breeding.....so I filled out the puppy application for a black male and the rest is history!!! Susan and Chelsea have been very supportive through all of Slim’s showing days. This dog saved my mental sanity! He is a delight and I have Susan to thank for that. I promised I would show him (and boy is that a different world!). But I honestly enjoyed every minute of it! He is now retired from the show ring and has become what I wanted in the first place....a companion and best friend. He now spends his time working at agility and guarding the house! When you purchase a Raindance Doberman you get a friend in Susan for life! Nancy Rubis 26 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine July/August 2014 July/August 2014 The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 27 We can never fully express what having Sunny as part of our family means, and our heartfelt appreciation to Susan for such a wonderful line of Dobermans. He was exceptionally easy to train and work with for his basic and initial obedience and therapy work training, and sailed through his AKC CGC on his first try. Multiple foot surgeries left me with significant mobility issues when traversing uneven ground or going down steps (I am also a disabled veteran). Having Sunny was a blessing, as I was able to qualify him for service dog work to assist me. He immediately knew when the working vest was on he had to focus solely on me. (not always easy with an 18-month-old intact male puppy!). When not with me, he follows my husband everywhere, and they can always be found on the sofa watching soccer together! He also very much enjoys his time with our daughter, Giovanna. One of their favorite spots is together on the tree swing in our front lawn. All of this would not have been possible if not for the expertise, continuous involvement, and great breeding from Susan that has resulted in such wonderful dogs. She genuinely loves her puppies, and is always involved and interested in how they are doing and how they are fitting in and adapting to their families. We are so excited about bringing in another puppy later this year from her. Jerry and Kathy Drake Obermark Dobermans Jerry Drake handling Rommel to his Championship Valor, Ch. Olympia Bronze Star v Promise Tess and Marj Brooks, 2007 Regional 30 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine QQ How did you get involved in Doberman Pinschers? After Jerry finished college in 1970 we moved to Lafayette, Louisiana where he began his career in the oil business. His job required him to go offshore quite a bit, leaving Kathy home alone in a strange new city with no family or friends close by. Previously, while in college, we had seen two beautiful Dobermans who resided next door to us. We would walk out our door and they would quietly assess us, regal, alert, missing nothing, seeing everything. So when we moved to Louisiana, we decided to look for a Doberman puppy. Coincidentally, a new acquaintance had a lovely black bitch named Velvet and she affirmed in looks and temperament we were on the right track. We saw an ad in the Baton Rouge newspaper for a litter of Champion-sired Doberman puppies and our new friend traveled with us to Baton Rouge to see the puppies. We came home with a boisterous red male puppy and named him Rommel. His sire was Ch. Tevrac’s Top of the Mark (Topper) out of Dallas, Texas, and the dam was a lovely bitch, Triple H Keen Morgansonne. The breeders mentioned to us that he was a very nice puppy and suggested that if we were interested, we might consider showing him. His registered name was Obermark’s Red Rommel. It was their only litter. Rommel was our first “child” and was everything we hoped for in a protector of hearth and home and surprised us by being a good show dog. We purchased this wonderful boy for just $125, he won a puppy match in Alexandria, Louisiana and not long after, went on to win Best Puppy under Marilyn Meshirer at the Houston Doberman Pinscher Club’s specialty show. He continued to win under noted judges of the day including a best of breed win under Peggy Adamson. Charlie Cooper was fairly new as a handler and he handled Rommel to a major win under Len Carey in Lexington, Kentucky. George Rood also handled him. But since we didn’t have much money, Jerry showed him most of the time and did very well, finishing him in Little Rock, Arkansas with a Best of Breed over specials under noted judge Phil Marsh and a group win under Virgil Johnson. We remember a young Teresa Nail and also Jeff Brucker on the great Ch. Dolph Von Tannenwald. We got to see and sometimes compete against great dogs of the day, such as Dolph and Ch. Weichardt’s A Go Go, and so many other people and dogs from those early years. We began to meet wonderful Doberman people. Jim Briley was a new friend and was starting out with his Dobie girls. He was a big fan of Rommel and taught him in obedience classes and encouraged us along the way. Dee Chiantella became a new friend when we moved to New Orleans. We had our first child, a daughter, in New Orleans and Rommel adored her from the start. She was soon followed by three sons. Jerry’s job transfers with frequent moves and raising our growing children consumed our time as they were all active in sports, we had to suspend showing. But Dobermans continued to grace our homes as companions, and we always went for quality. Rommel was followed by “Madchen” (Wendorf’s Bright Promise), a lovely red bitch from Alan and Jacquie Wendt. She was a wonderful companion and protector of our children. As she began to age, we called our old July/August 2014 friend, Jim Briley, and got “Stormy”, Albelarm’s Tribute v Aquarius. He also was a wonderful companion and friend. awarded the Bronze Star in Afghanistan. Valor was a wonderful and beautiful dog but sadly we lost him early to an extremely rare form of cancer. seven beautiful puppies. Sharon has been a wonderful mentor and friend as well, encouraging and helping us with our first litter. QQ How did your kennel name originate? When we decided to breed a litter we wanted to honor our very first Doberman and researched to see if his old kennel name was in use. It was not and we were happy to use the Obermark kennel name for our puppies. His one breeding gave us his baby son, Chip, now Ch. Olympia Semper Fi v Promise WAC. After 2 1/2 years out of the ring since finishing his Championship, Chip was awarded two Awards of Merit at the Regional Specialty last fall in Pomona, California. He was very capably handled by Hernan Pacheco. As with Valor, Kathy took Chip through the WAC and it was a highlight for her and always brings a smile to remember the teamwork with these beloved boys in the WAC evaluation. Two of these puppies have been shown, both have finished their championships and Cowboy Drake just finished his GCh. Rosie is closing in quickly on her GCh as this is written. Their registered names are GCh Obermark Blazing Star V Goldgrove (Cowboy) and Ch. Wishing Star V Goldgrove (Rose). Rosie won a sweepstakes at the Pomona Regional and Cowboy won his class there and was selected by Pat Hastings for judges’ education for his structure. Both did well in their classes. Esteban Farias and Hernan Pacheco have handled them as well as Nikki McClendon, Sara Casper and most recently Michael Shepherd and Judy King. Judy recently stepped up to assist Michael Shepherd, who finished Rosie; she took her in as a special and won a GCh 5 pt. major and several select majors, including BOS placements in lovely specials classes. QQ You took a very long break from Dobermans to raise your family. I must say you certainly came back in full force, you’ve had some really amazing dogs. Can you tell us about your whirlwind adventures? After our children left home, we moved again to Houston, TX, from beautiful Montana, having moved there from Jackson, Mississippi where our children essentially grew up. We decided to attend the National Specialty in Houston in 2005. Watching the stud dog class we saw a red dog that reminded us of our beloved Rommel. We spoke with the breeder and requested a show quality puppy. A few months later, another sweet red boy came into our lives. His name was Valor, who at 13 months of age became Ch. He was named in honor of our son, a career military officer who was Liesl and Marj Brooks, 2007 Regional July/August 2014 We also have 2 older companion bitches (Tess, a lovely Brimor bitch and Liesl from the Goldgrove line) who were shown for a while. In 2008 we purchased our beloved Justy from Linda George of Horizon Dobermans and she became our first Top Twenty Dobie. She became GCh Horizon’s Poetic Justice, one of the first Dobermans to win the new “Grand” title. She was a “lap dog” and always by Kathy’s side. She was wonderfully handled by Esteban Farias in Top Twenty competition and thus began our very special relationship with a gifted handler. Late in 2012 we bred Justy to our friend Sharon Pflueger’s lovely male, Ch. Goldgrove Believe It or Not (Ripley), and had Sadly, we lost our beloved Justy unexpectedly to a heart tumor, so her puppies are very special to us. As Amy Tourond wrote in a recent ad, “they are the sweetness that remains from their amazing mother”. Justy, free stacking at the 2009 Nationals Valor, awarded winners dog to finish his championship. We also now have a red bitch, Nauty, again from Goldgrove Dobermans; she is currently nearing her championship, needing only 3 single The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 31 points. Esteban Farias capably showed her to 4 majors including RWB at the 2013 National Specialty in Pomona, California. She is presently completing her run with Michael Shepherd, who lives closer to us, which enables us to see her show. Nikki McClendon and Sara Casper have been very special friends, working tirelessly in helping us train our pups, supporting and encouraging us and being there for us in all ways. Nikki took lots of calls from Kathy when we had our litter and never failed to help problem solve. She also placed a beautiful bitch with us, Jaci (Ch. Merrimac Over the Moon), who won majors from the 6-9 puppy class and recently finished her championship with four majors. We had gotten to know Judy King (actually through a rescue we took in) and she has become a dear friend. We were later thrilled to join “Team Rainy” with GCh. Blue Max Pretty Woman V Encore. Rainy is a lovely bitch who finished in the top twenty this year. Judy did a wonderful job with Rainy — they were beautiful in the ring together. Judy is an incred- ible lady and we are very blessed she came into our lives. Additionally, we were very excited to be invited to join “Team Bella” with Melinda and Tommy Moyer, who have become very special friends and mean so very much to us. Esteban Farias guided Bella, MBIS MBISS GCh Tiburon Ariel Bella Dona, to the DPCA Top Twenty number one Doberman in conformation ranking this year. It has been a wonderful experience for all of us. He was assisted by his lovely wife Jennifer and Hernan Pacheco. Esteban sat with us when we joined Team Bella and said, “This is supposed to be fun!” The team pulled together from the start and had lots of fun whether we won or lost. Bella showed with a fire and intensity that was breathtaking — she and Esteban were an incredible team. Meeting and getting to know John and Addy Dolan of Tiburon Dobermans, breeders of Bella and so many other nice Dobermans, has been special as well. We are very thankful for and blessed by these and many other wonderful people and dogs who have come into our lives. There’s an endless list of people who have been MBIS MBISS GCh Tiburon Ariel Bella Dona with some of her “team” 32 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine great encouragers along the way sharing wins, losses, breakfasts, lunches, suppers, traveling with us and being there for us. Dr. Leigh Ann Robertson, D.V.M., has assisted us with many medical issues. Jan Stephenson is a very dear friend, as is Gail Dunlap. Both of these lovely ladies work with Leigh Ann in her veterinary practice in the Dallas area. We also lthank Alisa Brotherhood and Lisa Lueders for helping with ear taping when we first got Valor. Also handlers Teresa Nail and David Harper assisted us with showing these two boys! Marj Brooks showed Valor at the National Specialty and has become a great friend. We really enjoy going to the Regionals and Nationals where so many come together to enjoy each other and this magnificent breed. Seeing the Dobermans all lined up in the ring is quite simply awe-inspiring. QQ You’ve done a lot of rescue work as well. How did the rescue kennel come about? We simply just have a heart for dogs. Rescue for us started nearly 20 years ago when we lived in Montana and really expanded after moving “Team Bella” r to l — Addy & John Dolan, Melinda and Tom Moyer, Estabon Farias, Bella, Hernan Pacheco, Jerry & Kathy Drake July/August 2014 Chip winning one of 2 awards of merit, 2013 regional Cowboy wins an impressive Best of Breed back to Texas. We have never been able to turn our back on abandoned and suffering animals. We have found many on the street and returned them to their loving homes. Some we took in because their homes were not worthy and others we rescued and restored to health, then found new forever homes for them to enjoy. shared their wisdom, supported and encouraged us, cared for us displaying integrity, professionalism, pure joy and lots of fun. We want to express happiness to our friends who win and be encouragers to those who experience disappointment and loss. We believe we are all in this together and should seek to welcome each little Doberman life and encourage his or her development to its full potential. We must be mentors and a good support system for new owners who purchase the puppies we breed. These needy animals seem to “find” us and we have expended much love and labor to bring them safety and happiness. The motto on our outof-date website (dogwoodtx.org) is “Providing the life they deserve” and that says it all. They give back so very much and are indeed grateful to enjoy life when they were once lonely and without hope. Today we have pretty much stopped taking in new dogs, all the ones we have are seniors and/or needy dogs who have or had issues which made them difficult to place. QQ What does the future hold for you? We enjoy where we are now, but plan on staying busy in and around the ring, having new pups to show, breeding some and perhaps having a new special or two. We have learned many things over the course of being in this sport. We want to be wise in our breeding, preserving good temperament and looking to the overall health of this wonderful breed. We have been blessed most recently with people who have July/August 2014 Nauty wins Reserve Winners Bitch at the 2013 National Another wonderful National win, Best In Sweepstakes for Rose QQ Just for fun, can you tell us something few people know about you? Something few know about Kathy is that she can actually talk like Donald Duck!! She learned this “skill” when she was a little girl, and later in life it was fun to amuse our children with her “talent”! Donald is a bit rusty now but every now and then she will wake him up for our grandchildren! Words can never describe how much your support and friendship has meant to us, not just through Bella but to us personally; the trips we’ve spent together have been amazing, filled with laughter and so many wonderful memories. We look forward to our future together in family and in dogs – and bless our beautiful BELLAB and Esteban for bringing us all together. She completed her championship quickly and did not skip a beat completing her grand championship soon afterwards. She will be seen at the Nationals this year with Esteban Farias and Hernan Pacheco. We are deeply grateful to them for training, caring for and showing her. Special thanks to “aunts” Nikki McClendon and Sara Casper for helping us raise and tirelessly train Rosie and her brother Cowboy from infancy. He has paid a lot of dues in the dog world, going from a junior showman to breeder/exhibitor, and now an AKC licensed judge. He has judged numerous Doberman Pinscher Specialties including the DPCA, Australian, Argentine, Brazilian, Canadian, and Philippine Nationals. He is licensed to judge the Working Group as well as Dachshunds and Junior Showmanship. In addition to Doberman Pinschers, he breeds Dachshunds and exhibits both breeds under the kennel name of Addox. He has been a member of the DPCA for 25 years. Over the years, Adrian has fought hard in California against frivolous bills that would impact the freedom of owning and breeding dogs. He has testified in committee hearings on several occasions, appeared on television numerous times and has been quoted in the newspapers pleading with legislators and the public not to be swayed by the animal rights whackos. Adrian began working in the media right out of college. He worked at a NBC affiliate for nearly twenty years. After leaving the news business, he freelanced as a feature reporter/producer for television magazine shows- America’s Most Wanted, Current Affairs, Inside Edition and California Heartland. He has appeared in national television commercials and print ads. Currently, Adrian works as an Information Officer II for the State of California. He is married and the father of three and grandfather to Master Elijah and Miss Emma Rose. He resides in Sacramento California. Beverly Capstick judging Dogs, Veteran Dog, Stud Dog 38 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine Adrian Woodfork judging Intersex, Best Puppy, Best Bred By Exhibitor, Junior Showmanship Beverly Capstick has had a long history in dogs. Her introduction to purebred dogs, was through a Collie, owned by her uncle, in the 50’s. A few years later she purchased a Boxer and through this breed learned the true meaning of humor and humility. In the early 60’s, while training her Boxer in obedience, she was introduced to a Doberman Pinscher and shared her life with this breed until 2010. In 1970 a Manchester Terrier was added to the family and in 2011 a Boston Terrier. Her first love is and will always be the Doberman. Capstick, an art teacher, continued to pursue her hobby of showing dogs. Training in obedience, Schutzhund, agility, conformation and breeding of Doberman Pinschers, eventually lead her to the venue of Judging. Her career has progressed from judging Doberman Pinschers to the Working, Herding, Hound, Toy and Non Sporting Groups, Junior Showmanship and BIS. Judging around the world has been an opportunity to see all of these breeds, especially the Doberman Pinschers, and a greater understanding of the history and function of this wonderful breed. Capstick’s vocation of teaching has crossed over into lecturing around the world on Canine Structure and its relationship to movement. Capstick now operates an art business, Lutzyn Originals, LLC depicting dogs in copper. Her artwork is found in 14 foreign countries and throughout the United States. Thank you for the honor of judging at the 2014 National. See you there! July/August 2014 Natl Judges Meet The 2014 Peggy Esposito has always been involved with animals since growing up. Her true love was horses and that’s where she met a Doberman named King where she fell in love with the breed. Peggy’s first Doberman, a male, was given to her in 1969 from a veterinarian that she had worked for. After her male, Peggy bought a female Doberman and started attending matches in New England and from there it led to her attending dog shows. She met several influential friends and became very involved in point shows. After several years of owning Doberman’s, Peggy began breeding under the name of D’Mascus. After 15 years of being involved in the breed, Peggy began judging at dog shows throughout the United States and International Countries and is able to judge 14 of the working breeds. Peggy is a Member of the DPCA and a Member of the Trapp Falls Kennel Club where she has been Show Chairman. To date, Peggy has bred and co-owned approximately 35 champions including several Best in Show winners. Moe Miyagawa judging Futurity July/August 2014 Peggy Esposito judging Bitches, Veteran Bitches, Brood Bitch About 45 years ago I was inside a small neighborhood market shopping for a few items and suddenly the customer at the register quickly bolted to the door. I don’t know he might have seen his bus start to pull out into the street. At that moment a big Doberman leaped through the back office door after that guy. He didn’t get him but he made such an impression on me. Here was a dog that was doing his job and I knew I had to have one. And that’s how it all started. I bought my first show quality Doberman from Mary Rogers of Marienburg Kennel in 1969 for $500. He didn’t finish but I was hooked on showing. Six years later I was handling Sun Hawk (Ch Marienburg’s Sun Hawk, CD), with 5 Best In Shows. Sun Hawk was number one Doberman for a couple of years. When you have a dog like this you think it can’t get better, but it did. In 1978 I was handling Mary Hartman (Ch Marienburg’s Mary Hartman), with 45 Best In Shows. She was # 1 All Breed. My next memorable Doberman was Repo Man (Ch Marienburg’s Repo Man), in 2000. We won 49 Best In Shows. In my career as a professional handler I have won 5 National Specialties, 2 with Mary Hartman, 2 with Sun Hawk (one from the veteran’s class) and 1 with RP. After 45 years of handling dogs I value most the friends I have made and the relationships that have grown over the years. Dog show people are my family… they all take care of me.
