The October issue is shaping up to be a good one, with some great features and articles. Looking forward to the future of DPM, with Marj Brooks here to help me. We are in a near constant state of “brain storming” on new features for the magazine. One of the new sections will be the New Title Holders with color ads only $250 and black & white for $125. If you had a new title in June or July you qualify for the section discount. The new titles will be printed in every issue. It’s great to see how much and how many people are involved in the sport. I am sorry I wasn’t able to print part two of the Peggy Adamson story in this issue, look for it the October issue. Along with the reprint of the live interview with Jane Kaye which ran in a previous issue of The Doberman Pinscher Magazine. We were thrilled to see how many people responded to the June “Who’s Dat” quiz. I wasn’t sure if I was making it too hard or if it wasn’t as fun as a thought it would be. Now I have my answer. So if the guesses dwindle I will make it a bit easier. It’s also wonderful to see the judges send in their answers. Since their subscriptions are free they play just for the fun of it! Thank you for your letters to the editor, feel free to write in with suggestions for articles or features. We want to know what you think and what you want to see in the magazine. ‘Til next time.... My first show picture and show dog, Ch. Fay-Dach’s Nic O’ Demus a wirehaired Dachshund. Marj Brooks Manorie Dobermans and Dachshunds The Early Years T he other day I needed to go to the San Francisco airport to pick up a wirehaired Dachshund. One has to drive through the city to get to the airport which is in South San Francisco. As I approached the top of the Waldo Grade I could see the Golden Gate Bridge and the silhouette of “the city” and as I drove over and closer to the bridge one can see much of the San Francisco Bay Area which is a magnificent sight to say the least, actually one of the most beautiful. It was a clear day which is all the better. My thoughts went to my beginning in Dobermans and being on my own soon after graduating high school. As I drove through “The City” and across 19th Avenue, I thought of all of the people who were in my beginning. As I passed their turn off streets those early days came flooding back. Sadly, most are not with us anymore, but the memories are. My first Doberman litter was whelped on April 3, 1963, while I was living in the area. My first Doberman was a male, Ch. Alnwick’s Black Fury Bismarck C.D. a black son of Ch. Felix vom Ahrtal ex Mikadobe’s Flambeau. I searched for a bitch to lease to breed to Bismarck. I found a black bitch to lease from Alice Ahmed (Flick) named Dilruba Denise. Her information and pedigree is in DobeQuest. More on this later. Moving back to the beginning of my doggy life, it started way back in my childhood days. I have always loved 14 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine dogs and cats and all animals really. There was always a pet dog and a pet cat in my immediate family and my grandparents and aunt and uncle’s families. In 1958 two wirehaired Dachshunds came to live with us with conditions which were to show and breed them, Nicky, a male and his daughter, Sherry. Nicky (see the October 2012 issue DPM page 70 for more) became a champion very quickly handled by me, the first dog for me to handle and the first dog for me to finish. Beginners luck hooked me forever! Sherry was bred in 1959 and produced two females and I kept one and the other went to the owner of the sire of the litter. The Dachshunds that I have today trace back to Nicky and Sherry. Sherry and Nicky are 12 and 13 generations back on both sides of the pedigree. This is the beginning of my breeding history. For all of Sherry’s puppies (6 total, 3 who became champions) I used the kennel name Brooks en Dachs. Later when Dobermans came hit my life, Brooks en Dobe’s didn’t sound as good to me for some odd reason, I started using Manorie Dachshunds and Manorie Dobermans. On February 8, 1963 Ann Hamilton Meyer of Annheim Dobermans in Sacramento California brought a 4 1/2 old black Doberman bitch for me to see. Her name was Annheim’s Dark Imp aka Imp (Elblac’s Zaturno ex Ch. Annheim’s Honeymoon. Honeymoon was sired by Ch. Elblac’s Zapotec so Imp was linebred on the Elblac “Z” litter. See DobeQuest for the pedigree. All Ann asked of August, 2013 me was for me to finish her and NOT to breed her to Bismarck. I agreed. I owner handled Imp to her American Championship and James T. Bennett handled her to her Canadian Championship. James T. and I entered into a co-ownership to breed Imp to his Ch. Mars of the Gladiators with Ann’s blessing. This breeding produced Ch. Manorie’s Derek vd Gladiators. Derek was bred and through Derek this pedigree is way back in some of today’s pedigrees such as Florindale to name one. Imp was bred a second time to Ch. Weichardt’s Rosen Cavalier C.D. (Bismarck ex Weichardt’s Princess Athena) again with Ann’s blessing. You can see this pedigree in DobeQuest. This breeding produced 2 champions, the red bitch Manorie Dobe’s Imprevu. Red Imp was Best in Show from the BBE class. She was bred but did not have puppies. The other was a black bitch, Ch. Manorie Dobe’s ImPavon v DuRel. ImPavon was bred to Ch. Brookwood’s San Marin (Peroma’s Chief Pontiac C.D. ex Ch. Matador Select Cherokee C.D.) and bred by Lynn Woods and myself, see DobeQuest for more information. This mating produced two champions, Ch. DuRel’s Black Power, a black male whose owners moved to Canada and he was bred and he too traces back to a few present day pedigrees. A red bitch offspring, Ch. DuRel’s Burn Baby Burn was bred and I just recently traced her back to a present day Doberman bred by Bonnie Wittrock through Ch. Manorie Dobe’s Tarquinius. Now I will back track to my first litter and Derek (Dark Imp’s son by Mars). From the Bismarck ex Dilruba Denise litter produced my first home bred Champion, Ch. Manorie Dobe’s Kahlua L owned by Lynn Woods of San Francisco. I kept a black bitch, Manorie Dobe’s Apre L. who I bred to Ch. Mikadobe’s Riptide (Ch. Steb’s Top Skipper ex Ch. Mikadobe’s Cinnamon Bun, a half-sister to Bismarck’s dam). All of this leads up to a remarkAugust, 2013 Ch. Alnwick’s Black Fury Bismarck CD (Ch. Felix vom Ahrtal ex Mikadobe’s Flambeau) my first Doberman. Ch. Manorie Dobe’s Imprevue won her BIS from the BBE class at the Oakland KC in 1969. I think it was my first. The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 15 able story that I just recently learned. I was searching DobeQuest so I could fill in that dog’s pedigree when the name of another dog caught my eye. I clicked on Lady Sakurafubuki Lee. I saw that she was a Ch., C.D. ROM and LC 16 D (11-3-1980 – 3-141997). Well needless to say, I clicked onto the pedigree and saw that it was incomplete. It only had the pedigree of the top half of the sire, Severy’s Eric (Ch. Montwood’s Aquarius ex Wendy Von Goldtrasse). Other than Montwood’s Aquarius, there was no pedigree. I thought that a Doberman who lives to be 16.4 years old and was a foundation bitch deserves to have her whole pedigree in DobeQuest! So, I emailed her owners Hiroko and Skip Lee to ask if they still had her pedigree. They were away from home at the time, When Hiroko read my email she answered and sent me the pedigree. I printed it and when I read it, my eyes telescoped out of my head! You know like you see in the cartoon drawings! LOL In the 4th generation which what she sent I saw at the bottom on the dam’s side, Dante’s Casaque of Bismarck and also the dam’s grandsire (Bismarck ex Mia of the Gladiators-Derek’s daughter). I knew this dog and his U.S. owner but I didn’t know that he was sold to Hawaii! The other was the bitch that he was bred to in the 4th generation, MANORIE DOBE’S CABERNET! Cabernet (Ch. Mikadobe’s Riptide ex Manorie Dobe’s Apre L) I knew that she went to Hawaii but I never knew that she was bred! Apparently her owner, Louise Walker bought Casaque and bred the two together. Wow, what a surprise and a pleasant one at that! I knew that Cabernet was shown by her young son and achieved at least 12 points. However she did not finish and there is a story about that too, of course. I believe that Sakura is the Lee’s foundation bitch and is behind their Majestic Doberman’s today. There are a couple of others from this first litter that may be in the backgrounds of some of today’s Dobermans too. That would be Manorie Dobe’s Triple Sec L, Manorie Dobe’s Anisette L (dam of Ch. Brookwood’s Pawnbroker bred by me) and Ch. Manorie Dobe’s Kahlua L, my first homebred champion. While driving through San Francisco that day I remembered many of my old friends who are no longer with us today, but I also thought of somebody who lived in the city in those days I am friends with today and that is Liz and Ken Kammuller. We have a rich history together as friends and in dogs. I met them when they purchased Manorie Dobe’s Benedictine L from my first litter. We basically grew up and learned in dogs together and shared each other dogs and we still do today as in the last few years we have co-bred a few champions. Well this my very early days. Hopefully I can finish this breeding history at another time. Thank you for listening and I hope that you enjoyed my story. By the way all of the pedigrees and dogs that are mentioned her are in DobeQuest. I visit Dobe Quest often and I also fill in a lot of blank pedigrees. I was gifted what is called The Doberman Reference Set and what it is 6 books containing AKC stud books. What I have covers the years from 1940 through 1977. I have been trying to find more of these so they are not lost to the breed. There has to be more of them out there, so be on the watch for them and take them if you are offered them. DobeQuest is always looking for old studbooks and/ or new studbooks. If you happen onto this set or any set, let me know please. Also collect old magazines and pictures of yesterday’s Dobermans as well. This is our breeding history. Thank you. Years back I was a member of a pretty elite and selective group of soldiers. I served in a US Army Canine Unit…the 981st Military Police Company, a sentry dog unit based out of Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam. It was an unforgettable experience working with these canines and the soldiers who took them out on the perimeter every night. I still think of those months over there, and especially of the dogs. They were dedicated, loyal, and efficient. It came out later that the Military Working Dog was credited with saving 10,000 lives in that conflict. Think of it…..there could be 10,000 more names on the Vietnam Wall if it wasn’t for these brave dogs. They served as sentry dogs, scout dogs, patrol, booby trap detection and went down into the tunnels searching for the enemy combatants. They were so efficient the North Vietnamese had a significant bounty on the dogs. After leaving the military I maintained an interest in the military working dog. I affiliated with organizations comprised of former handlers. In 2004 I met John Burnam who was a scout dog handler in Vietnam. John had written a book “Dog Tags of Courage” about his experiences with his dog, Clipper, in Vietnam. It was a 18 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine well-received book. Talking with John, he mentioned how his dream was to have a national monument established for the military working dog which would honor their loyalty, dedication, and sacrifice. I immediately aligned with John and decided I would do whatever I could to help. It was a long journey. Major help came from US Representative Walter Jones of North Carolina. He had read John’s book and was also interested in helping. In the FY2008 National Defense Authorization Act Congressman Jones submitted a section establishing a National Monument to the Military Working Dog. It remained in the act passed by Congress and signed by President Bush. We had the first and only Monument officially designated as a National Monument to these brave and self-less animals. A change in the law was submitted in the FY2010 National Defense Authorization Act, passed by Congress and signed by President Obama. The John Burnam Monument Foundation was officially established and designated as the creator of the Military Working Dog Teams National Monument. A design for the monument was submitted by Brian Rich, the brother of Rachel Lee. Dustin Lee had been US August, 2013 Teams National Monument Marine Canine Handler who died in action in Iraq in 2007. The Lee family became the first family to adopt their son’s dog. Lex is a part of this monument. Paula Slater, a nationally acclaimed sculptor, was selected to create the monument figures. The Monument itself honors military working dogs from World War II up thru the present day and into the future. While many breeds were used by the military in the early Dogs for Defense program in World War II, it was decided that four major breeds would represent the K-9 Corps: Doberman Pinscher – famed for its work with the United States Marines in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The cemetery on Guam contains the remains of 26 Dobes who gave their lives for this country. The cemetery contains a memorial to these dogs and the cemetery is maintained to this day. German Shepherd Dog – Named the official breed of the K-9 Corp when it was officially established in 1957. 4,000 of these dogs were utilized in Vietnam. About 300 died in action. Many were euthanized or turned over to the South Vietnamese forces as the conflict involving US August, 2013 troops wound down. This action led to the Military Working Dog Adoption Act in the late 1990s where these dogs are available for adoption upon retirement. The versatility of these dogs started becoming evident in Vietnam and led to greater interest in their use and expanded their role in the military. Currently used for patrol, sentry, vehicle and building searches, and drug detection. Labrador Retriever – limited use in Vietnam, mainly for tracking and booby trap detection. Now, the Lab is used extensively in Afghanistan for its ability to detect the numerous ingredients that comprise IEDs. Belgian Malinois – the up and coming breed. Like the German Shepherd Dog, it is used primarily for patrol, building and vehicle searches, drug detection. This Military Working Dog Teams National Monument will happen. Thanks to support from Natural Balance Pet Food, Petco, and Maddie’s fund, as well as from individuals from all across the country, the statues are completed, and ground breaking for the Monument took place in early July. Our completion goal is October, 2013. Please visit www. jbmf.us to follow the progress of this impressive monument. g The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 19 Desert Valley Doberman Pinscher Club visits the National Monument for the Dogs for Defense as it travels through Phoenix. It was a hot and fairly humid day in Phoenix when the truck holding the National Monument for the Dogs for Defense pulled into the parking lot. The patriotic truck wasn’t hard to find, as it just struck you full blast. Judie and Jim Walter, and I arrived at 7:00 a.m. Judie was instrumental in getting our club members together for this event. We talked to Jim Frost, the man responsible for having the truck stop in Phoenix. When Judie and Jim got their dogs out of the car, Caye spotted the dogs in the monument, planted his feet and started barking. Then he ran up onto the platform and was embarrassed that he was fooled by bronze statues. Several of the dogs thought they were real, that’s how good they look. Our club members and dogs interacted with those present. It was hot, so dogs were rotated in and out of 20 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine air-conditioned cars, and some wore their cool coats. The Monument, done by bronze sculptor Paula Slater, was on its way from Los Angeles to its home at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where the military working dog teams are trained. They had left a day early to stop in Phoenix, and Jim Frost said Phoenix was the only stop on its way to Lackland, mostly because Arizona was the biggest supporter of the project. The National Monument was done to honor the U.S. Military Working Dog Teams of all Armed Services and all wars, including Iraq and Afghanistan. One lady present had her adopted German Shepherd Dog, who was a retired War Dog and had been on eight assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Rick Romley, a much decorated war hero who lost both his legs in the Vietnam conflict, and our Coun- ty Attorney a few years back, was impressed with the Dobermans and talked to Judie at length. He was interested in the Therapy Dog stories from the years she has done Therapy Dog work at the VA Hospital. Members of the Desert Valley Doberman Pinscher Club present were Jennifer Cannerreli with Vader, Judie and Jim Walter with Cayenne and Serri, Bob Allen with Becca, Lori Steadman with Gunny, Kathleen Guyer with Pistol, and Louise Mogler, who was busy taking pictures. The Club members are also active in the annual Veterans’ Day Parade here in Phoenix, marching with the War Dog Group. Marcy, Just a quick note of thanks for printing the article on Peggy. It brought back great memories. I can remember having dinner with her and Jane Kay one evening at a show. I think my responsibility that evening was to be a referee. I have been judging your breed since about 1988 and it has always been my favorite breed in the Group excluding my own (Great Danes). If I didn’t have Danes, there is no doubt that I would have chosen the Dobe. Anyway, thanks for good memories. Bill Stebbins I’m laying in bed with a shattered heal and reading the Dobe magazine that just arrived. There’s some really nice animals in the magazine but couldn’t help but noticing how people don’t list who the judges were. This is just not happening with Dobes but with all breeds. Years ago we would never think of doing such a thing, at least acknowledging the judge, especially for a big win. Just one of my hangups but judges do talk, and feel unappreciative of the award bestowed. If you can pass this along, it would be much appreciated. I know that dog shows aren’t what they used to be, but at least we can show a little courtesy to the judges that got you were you’re at. Thanks for listening!
