Your friends Larry, Linda and Jan 14 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine May/June 2014 The Story of Jacquie & Alan Wendt, WENDORF DOBERMANS A s long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to dogs – like an irresistible magnet. My family called it my “dog affliction” and thought I’d outgrow it. They’re still waiting! We had a black Cocker Spaniel when I was a toddler, and a series of dogs who “followed me home” when I was a little bigger, but they were always given away, as they felt dogs were “too much trouble”. It’s not that they didn’t like dogs, they just liked them in someone else’s house! Perhaps out of frustration I started collecting dog pictures from the newspapers and magazines, trading cards, statues, anything to do with dogs. I read every dog book, both fact and fiction, in the school library. I modeled, in clay, all the breeds of dogs pictured in our encyclopedia. I carried dog biscuits in my pockets at all times, just in case I found a dog wandering around outside. I would announce to my parents every so often that I wished to go blind so that I could have a guide dog. At around ten years of age, I discovered Dog World Magazine. It was through these magazines, plus the encyclopedia, that I became aware of the Doberman Pinscher and the world of dog shows. In my eyes Dobermans were the most beautiful and noble of any breed. Nothing could equal them. My attraction to dogs had new meaning. Now I had a goal. I wanted to have, train, show and produce the best Dobermans I possibly could and to be someone of value to the breed. At that point, it was more of an impossible dream. I settled for borrowing neighbors’ dogs to walk, train, groom and love for the time being. May/June 2014 At eighteen years old I acquired a Miniature Schnauzer (San Souci of Glen-Sed or “Suzi”). With her I learned to groom (and started a small grooming career that lasted 25 years), did my first formal obedience training, bred my first litter and joined the Chicago Miniature Schnauzer Club. Though Suzi was not my dream Doberman, at least I was allowed to keep her, and she was a good ‘learning dog’. By this time, of course, I was dating and one of my requirements of a boy friend was that he liked dogs. Many times Suzi accompanied me on dates. “Love me, love my dog” was my motto! And then, I met Alan Wendt. We were married six months after we met. Though he didn’t have the ‘dog affliction’, he truly liked them and was wonderful with them. He has always been supportive of my ideas, goals and efforts. He’s been “the wind beneath my wings”. We bought our first Dobe in 1967 – a pet quality black bitch we named Wendt’s Black Velvet. With a brand new house and a one year old daughter, Cheri, Velvet was all we could afford at the time. But she was a Doberman. My own Doberman at last!! Unfortunately she was hit and killed by a car at one year of age. We learned the hard way the absolute necessity of a fenced yard. To this day our dogs are always either fenced-in or on leash when outside. Our second daughter, Christie, was born in 1968. Our next Dobe, Ann How’s Fantastic Fraulein, CD, also turned out to be pet quality. I trained her in Obedience and we got her CD. Though she was trained for Open work and did some Utility exercises, we never pursued her titles. At that point we joined The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 15 the Illini Doberman Pinscher Club, The Doberman Pinscher Club of America and Northwest Obedience Club. We purchased our third Dobe in 1971 from Suzanne (Sullivan) Olmstead, through Keith and Joanna Walker – a red show bitch who eventually became Ch. Spica of Marks-Tey. At last, I had my show dog! Our debut at a fun match was an absolute disaster. When the judge gave me directions I became deaf, dumb, blind and paralyzed. And then four month old Spica peed on his shoe and jumped up and bit off his boutonniere! I really thought I’d faint! From that day we practiced and practiced and practiced some more. I started observing and studying other handlers’ techniques. We won a few Reserves from the puppy classes and a 3 point major her first time in Open. By now, Alan and I knew we had a really good Dobe and wanted that first Champion so badly. We decided Keith Walker and then Charlie Cooper could finish her quicker than I could. Along the way she was Reserve Winners Bitch at the 1972 National Specialty. It drove me crazy to not be in the ring showing Spica. When we started our breeding program and showing the resulting offspring, we did a lot of the handling ourselves, but did resort to handlers at times. But again, it was difficult for me to have someone else handle my dogs in the ring. I just love working with them and being basically a do-it-yourselfer, it truly bothered me. Win or lose, I wanted to do it myself. I finally felt confident enough to do all our own handling. Alan and I have become quite a good team. I do the grooming, training, conditioning and most of the handling. Alan is always ready to handle if I need help, but also always has the dogs, grooming bag, bait, whatever else we need at ringside for me. He kept the motor home, when we had it, and everything else in working order, and is my coach and moral support. We were lucky to have Keith and Joanna Walker and Charlie Cooper as mentors. They were so very generous with their knowledge and help. We formed a wonderful friendship and they became like family to us. When we were ready to start a breeding program we chose WENDORF as our kennel name. The ‘Wend’ part is from our last name and ‘dorf’ is German for village. We just liked the nice strong sound of it. Though the Walkers and Charlie were fabulous mentors, I don’t think they or anyone else influenced our breeding decisions that much. I had a mental picture of what my perfect Dobe looked like and the temperament it would have. When we bred a bitch it was with the thought of breeding to a dog that would complement her and be strong in what she lacked or where she could use improvement. I also go with my gut feeling about the union. In our breeding we aim for the soundest, healthiest, typiest, best temperament and long lived Dobes possible. I study pedigrees and try to know the dogs in them, their strong and weak traits. I strive for beautiful sound balanced Dobes with beautiful heads, proper mouths, good shoulders, clean efficient movement, masculine males and feminine bitches. They are working dogs and should be built for the job. We want livable temperaments that are also not dog aggressive. We do want our dogs to be protective, but in today’s legislative society an aggressive dog is a big problem. At one time we had ten house Dobes, including four intact males, living peacefully together their entire lives. To date, we have never had a dog fight. As they are our companions in addition to show, obedience and working dogs, good temperament is so important. Ch. Spica of Marks-Tey our first champion & foundation bitch. Dam of four champions. Ch. Wendorfs Dream Maker, ‘Ryan’, our first homebred puppy & champion. Sire of three champions. Ch. Wendorfs Crackerjack, CD, ‘Arnold’ who sired 3 champions. He had is own fan club who donated trophies to clubs! 16 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine When I’ve bred one of my bitches it has been with the thought of keeping a puppy. So, of course, I will only breed a bitch who I feel can contribute something of value to the breed. When I’m choosing a stud dog I consider what she is lacking and what I’m trying to improve on her. I also look at her strong points and things I don’t want to lose. I look to see if there is a dog that possesses, comes from, and sires the qualities and traits I’m looking for. I also look at what, from his background or his get, I’m not willing to take a chance on acquiring. We have out crossed, line bred and what I call ‘far away line breeding’. It really depends on what type of dog my bitch needs to be bred to, hopefully to get the desired results. We have not bred to dogs that carried dilution. There have been some lovely dogs I would have liked to use May/June 2014 Ch. Wendorfs Harmony, ‘Harmony’. Dam of three champions. except that they carried dilution. I have no objection to the colors; I just don’t want to deal with the possible problems that might show up. We have used our stud dogs very sparingly. I’ve only allowed them to be used when I feel I’m dealing with a quality bitch at least two years old, with a good pedigree with high quality Dobes in it, and hopefully health testing, whose owner is a responsible and reputable person who would properly care for both bitch and puppies. We feel a responsibility for the puppies we breed and those our dogs sire and want only the best for the resulting puppies and the breed. As novices we learned the hard way, with the first male we’d bought who eventually finished. This was the first time we had bred a male we owned. The bitch was nice looking and had some champions in her pedigree; she had a proper mouth, as Alan and his DPCA Best Brace, inside Ch. Wendorfs Let Th’ Good Times Roll & outside, his son, Ch. Wendorfs Irresistable May/June 2014 Ch. Wendorfs Irresistable, ‘Redfurd’. A top 20 finalist 1991 & 1992. Sire of twelve champions. did our male, so we thought the breeding would be okay. What we didn’t know, because we didn’t look into her background further, was that her grandsire had several missing teeth! The resulting litter consisted of some of the puppies with up to 6 missing teeth! We learned our lesson…..study and know those pedigrees and the dogs in them! The health testing we do today is important. We have been testing for heart, vWD, hips, thyroid and Cerf so far. True, we can do health testing on Dobes we breed and sometimes still come up with problems, but at least we hopefully find out if we have a problem before we breed and not prolong or double up on it. It just makes sense, to us, to know the facts and hopefully have the odds in our favor. We have always tried to keep the highest standards and ethics in our breed- Ch. Wendorfs Love At First Sight, ‘Peace’. Dam of two champions. ing and showing. To not have the best interests of our dogs and the Doberman breed always in mind is unthinkable. We’ve made some mistakes as novices, learned from them and do our best to breed Dobes who are sound both in mind and body. We’ve had 31 Champions, 27 of them homebred, with a TOP 20 dog for two consecutive years (Ch. Wendorf’s Irresistable….”Redfur’d”), plus several others that were pointed or near the title but didn’t finish for various reasons. There is also a TOP 20 Agility finalist (Wendorf’s Nadia, CD, CGC, WAC, MX, MXJ…..”Jet”), plus other Agility, CD, CDX, WAC, a ROM and therapy dogs of our breeding. Also, a Top 20 Agility winner, sired by our Ch. Wendorf’s Phenomenon, ”Kurt”. I probably have 2 favorite breedings. The first was our very first Dobe litter. After breeding our first champion, Am/Can Ch. Wendorfs My Best Friend, ‘Passion’. Dam of two champions. The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 17 Ch. Wendorfs Phenomoenon, ‘Kurt’. Sire of nine champions & one DPCA Top Twenty Agility Winner Ch. Wendorfs Viva La Vita, BN, RN, ‘Viva’. WB her first show at 6 months, 1 week. 3 pt. major the next weekend. Wendorfs Nadia CD, CGC,WAC, MX MXJ Agiltity Top 20 Finalist Ch Spica of Marks-Tey, to two different champions with no pregnancies, we tried a third time with Ch. Browns Life With Riley. Spica had long toes with long sloping pasterns and toed in a bit on the down and back. Riley had great feet, pasterns and was a super mover plus he had a wonderful temperament to match Spica’s. The result was 3 girls and 2 boys, all reds. I finally had the litter I had dreamed about for 19 years thus, The Dream Litter. From that litter came Ch. Wendorf’s Dream Maker….”Ryan” (our first Wendorf puppy born here, first homebred Ch and we kept him of course) and Ch. Wendorf’s Mid Sumr’s Nite Dream…”Kimmy”. Also there was Wendorf’s Impossible Dream, CD…..”Miracle” (named Miracle because I thought if we ever had a litter it would be a miracle), who we kept and only needed 5 singles to finish. I foolishly bred her thinking she would pop back into show shape after puppies. It never happened and so she didn’t finish. Another lesson learned. Wait till the show career is finished before breeding a bitch. I realize some bitches do get their shape back, but I am not about to try it again. The other male from the litter was pointed and had a Best of Breed award but tragically died in a house fire. And the owners of the third bitch stopped showing to do more with horses. A repeat of that breeding produced Ch. Wendorf’s Autumn Leaves and Malaysian Ch. Wendorf’s Bright Sparkle. at the 1986 National Specialty and I saw this magnificent red male come in the Specials ring. It was love at first sight. I knew I just had to breed Scarlett to him. The result was our Ch. Wendorf’s Irresistible …..”Redfur’d”. He was the 4th generation of our breeding and finished at 15 months old with 3 majors, the last two back-to-back 5 point majors on the tough Ravenna, Ohio circuit. Redfur’d was in the TOP 20 for two consecutive years, 1991 and 1992, breeder-owner handled all the way. It doesn’t get any better than that! A childhood dream come true. We only allowed him to be bred 12 times and the result was 12 Champion get. He was the most beautiful, masculine, correct, smart, sweet, funny guy and a wonderful ambassador for the breed. We still miss him. Ch. Wendorfs Razle Dazzle, ‘Roxie’ Ch. Wendorfs Wow Factor, Clint’ | May/June The Doberman 2014 Pinscher Magazine My second favorite litter was when we bred our Wendorf’s Flashdancer …..”Scarlett” to Ch. Pajant’s Encore v Rockelle, WAC……”Cory”. Scarlett was beautiful, smooth, elegant and showed nicely as a puppy but decided then she didn’t like the show ring, so we retired her. The genes were still there! We were Hopefully we will breed many more future Champions. Right now we are Bronze GCh. Desperado’s Hallelujah, ‘Glory’. The first Dobe we have bought in 43 years! The Doberman Pinscher May/June Magazine 2014 | 18 L to R, Ch. Wendorfs Let Th’ Good Times Roll, Ch Wendorfs Irressitable, Ch. Wendorfs Love Me Tender, Ch. Wendorfs Master of the Game. Four males living peacefully together! showing a gorgeous red bitch, Grand Ch. Dezperado’s Hallelujah…..”Glory”. She is the first Dobe we have bought in 43 years and is great granddaughter of our Ch. Wendorf’s Phenomenon…..”Kurt”, so she has our breeding in her background. I wanted a red bitch and just wasn’t getting any in our breeding, so we did the next best thing and bought one. We hit the jackpot! She started her career with 2 Best of Breed wins at 7 months old over 3 Specials each day and finished, owner-handled of course, with three 4 point majors, the last two on the same day at 12 months old. She’s won several Best of Breeds and Group placements in her first year as a Special, owner-handled. Because Alan has a health issue at this time and we can’t get out to dog shows, Glory has gone to Texas to be with her breeders, Hillary Zimmerman and Linda and Rick George, where her show career will continue for now. So far she’s doing extremely well! As far as advice to prospective or novice breeder-owner-handlers, gather as much information as possible through dog and Doberman books, magazines, clubs, dog shows and reputable people who are willing to talk to you. You never The Doberman 2014 Pinscher Magazine 19 | May/June know when a tidbit of information will come in handy. Make sure you know and understand the standard. Buy from a reputable breeder who will stand behind the quality of their dogs, preferably one who will also be a mentor and can guide you along, or can direct you to someone who will. Join a handling class and don’t forget to practice a bit every day until the routine of opening your dog’s mouth for exam, stacking, gaiting and baiting are like second nature to both you and your dog. Practice in front of a full length mirror so you can get a feeling of how he/ she looks best. Make it fun! If it isn’t, you will both be miserable. Know your dog’s good and not so good points so you can emphasize them accordingly. Study various handlers’ techniques, not only in the Dobe ring, but other breeds as well. Have your dog in good physical condition, clean and groomed to look his/her “Sunday Best”. It takes time to decipher which judges like what kind of dog. I find it helpful to keep notes on every judge we show under, so I have an idea of which of my dogs, if any, to show to them. If you know you have a good dog, be persistent and don’t give up. I wish I had stuck it out, owner-handling, with Spica and some of the first dogs. I would have had that much more experience and knowledge. Please practice good sportsmanship and keep a sense of humor. We all want to be ‘the winner’ but it just doesn’t happen every time. We are always thrilled to win but we’re also happy for our friends’ wins, or when an exceptionally nice dog does well. There’s always another dog show to try again. Enjoy the camaraderie of friends and acquaintances who share the same love of their dogs. It’s wonderful to know there are people out there on the same wavelength as Alan and I, and we treasure those friendships. Like anything else, you get out of your dogs, dog shows and, in our case, breeder-owner-handling what you put into it. I have truly put my heart and soul into it. I feel a sense of accomplishment and that I must be one of the luckiest people on earth. Though it took a long time to get here, I’m living out my childhood dream of breeding and showing my own line of Dobermans, and being considered a person of value to the breed, along with the best partner anyone could have...Alan. g Does this Avanti card look familiar? Mom did find a puppy for the family out of the news paper ads. She had wanted black, but we ended up with a RED! Ruby came home freshly cropped and I started what was to become a life long skill set of caring for cropped ears. I was so fascinated with the ear process that I demonstrated ear wrapping with Ruby at my side during a 7th grade “show and tell” assignment. It was standing room only with many of the teachers out in the hallway watching ‘the Doberman’ in the building. Ruby stationed herself on the teacher’s desk and sat patiently while I explained the cropping process to the classroom and wrapped her erect ears yet again. Little did I know that this was to be my future both in Dobermans and in Veterinary Medicine. Ruby succumbed to renal failure induced by urinary incontinence medication on Oct 27, 1986. Her sudden absence drove my desire to find a puppy to fill the void. But just not any puppy would do, she had to be RED! I began a search that would take a year to complete. My list of demands grew when I attended my first dog show with my neighbors and their Boxer. I quickly decided I wanted a red puppy bitch to show in the conformation ring! In the search for my puppy, I called every veterinary hospital in town. Surely, the veterinary hospitals would know where the best dogs were! They all gave me the same contact information from the same directory printed May/June 2014 by a local kennel club. I learned of a local Doberman breeder Nancy Dinkfelt of Grandobes was expecting a litter out of her champion red bitch Nifty. I made my wishes known to her and literally ‘stalked’ her at every possible local dog show. I made sure she knew I was serious about showing regardless of my age and lack of experience. Nifty whelped a litter of 10 puppies Oct 27, 1987 (one year to the day of Ruby’s death) and one solo red bitch was among them. I just knew this red bitch puppy was meant to be mine. Regardless of Nancy calling her ‘Maybe’ (meaning maybe I will keep her and maybe I will sell her), I remained positive, hopeful and so very determined. My assertiveness paid off and I picked up Chelsea, CKC/INT CH Grandobe’s Chelsea (Ch Rivertaw’s Brubaker X Ch Grandobe’s Cecret Cienna) Dec 29, 1987. It’s amazing how one puppy can change your life forever. Nancy decided to take a chance on a young inexperienced teenager and began mentoring me at all levels of the dog show world. She trained and handled Chelsea until the family moved to Oregon in 1990. Though miles apart, Nancy and I remained in close contact through the years and over the generations of Dobermans to come. QQ How did your kennel name originate? Like Dobermans, Sunsets come in all colors. Reds to black, to blues and grays. They can be bold, fearless of the night, stunning, graceful, amazing to watch and touching to the soul. They can bring a sense of peace and calmness. Sunsets describe Dobermans perfectly and seemed to be a natural combination to me. My first Sunset Doberman litter was whelped in 1991. I’ve produced 12 litters and 11 AKC Champions since then, with 4 in the wings and counting. May/June 2014 QQ What inspired you to enter the ring as an owner-handler and who did you learn from? The Pacific Northwest offered amazing opportunities in Dobermans. Once settled and in college, my search for Chelsea’s new handler led me to the guidance of professional handler Marj Brooks. Marj attended the larger shows in the northwest and strongly encouraged my interest in showing Chelsea myself when she was not in town. Chelsea and I battled hunting for majors (entries of 38 + bitches at that time), terrible false pregnancies after every season, my novice owner lack of experience and the handler priority issue for over three years. Some of the most noted Doberman judges of the day awarded Chelsea points including a major with Marj under Tommie Jones and a lovely win with Nancy under Peggy Adamson. Peggy absolutely loved Chelsea’s head-piece, commenting on it during an official show photograph plus finding her again at the parking lot donut social of the 1995 Portland DPCA National. I so wanted to finish her, but at 6 years of age Chelsea was retired from the ring lacking a major to finish. Mentors aren’t exactly labeled with big pointy black hats labeled ‘Mentor’. They can come into your life in all aspects of dogs. I have had the pleasure of having many over the years. All have contributed to my experiences: Nancy Dinkfelt, Marj Brooks, Ann Lanier, Bob and Pat Hastings, Linda Siegel, and Cheri McNealy,. QQ What have been your most memorable moments showing your Dobermans? I am fortunate to have had many memorable moments over the years, from Raji’s amazing Top 20 performance at DPCA’s inaugural agility event in 2000, to DeJavu’s finishing with a Best of Breed and group placement from the classes over 1998, Dawn & Ch. Each win, the first, last and major points... all are memorable, for it’s really not about the destination, it’s about the journey. QQ How and when did you start working with Alba Medical in the Holter program? I contacted Alba Medical with my resume, Holter chair background and extensive veterinary experience. Mt Hood DPC was actually the first Doberman club to purchase a Holter monitor (under my recommendation in 2002) from Alba Medical (I remember Alba President telling me that on the phone while ordering). John was looking for someone with Doberman experience (owner, breeder, handler, judge a big plus, and veterinary background). I appeared in his email box and got the job just like that! I have been with Alba Medical since 2009. Sunset Wanta B Starting Something, ‘MJ’ QQ What does the future hold for you? There will be less showing and more judging as the years go by, but I will always have Dobermans. I look forward to eventual approval to judge the entire working group; Boxers and Juniors are next in the process. QQ Just for fun, can you tell us something few people know about you? I have been employed by the same veterinary practice since 1990. I have worked my way through every position — reception, assistant, certified veterinary technician, then practice manager from 1997 forward. It’s been a ride of a lifetime. I truly enjoy helping clients with their pets, and working with the patients when you love your job every day is living the dream. g Judging the Desert Valley Specialty Coming up next: August Pre-National Featured Breeders Susan & Chelsea James, Raindance Dobermans Someone You Should Know Jerry & Kathy Drake, Obermark Dobermans Deadline June 15 Plus All Color Puppy ads only $250! I wanted a dog for the longest time. In 1998, my parents took me to a local show. We were immediately drawn to the Doberman ring. I met an exhibitor, Natasha King, who referred me to Sandra Hunter of Bruda Dobermans. We went to meet Sandi and went home with a six month old black puppy bitch, Kona, Bruda Here N There. I started going to conformation classes to learn how to show. Since I was only 9 years old at the time, I started going to UKC shows to help Natasha with her dogs and show my own. Kona was soon a Best in Show UKC Champion. Soon after I started showing in AKC Junior Showmanship, and then ventured into the breed ring. I was just a little kid in among some legends. QQ What inspired you to enter the ring as an owner handler? It’s always been about my relationship with my dogs. They are my beloved companions first, and my show dogs second. When we enter the ring together, our special bond makes it a good experience whether we win or lose. It’s been so rewarding to breed, show, and finish my own dogs! QQ Are you involved in performance? I have trained in obedience and agility in the past, but currently am focusing on the conformation side of things. Winning Best Junior with Bruda’s Here N There. 30 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine QQ Did you have a mentor? I have had many mentors throughout the years. I practically grew up in the Doberman ring, and many have been there to offer tips and tricks to help me hone my skills. In particular, Sandra Hunter has been my greatest teacher. She encouraged Junior Showmanship, entrusted me with Kona and Cruiser, and was there to assist with my early breeding decisions. QQ To date, what has been your most memorable ring experience? There are so many great memories. One especially great memory was when I was 12 years old and my boy Cruiser, CH Bruda In A Red PT Cruiser, was only 6 months old. I entered him in the Greater Milwaukee DPC Specialty in Waukesha under Brian Meyer. It was an extremely hot summer day, and I kept telling myself to just have fun. Cruiser picked up BOW for a five point major. In 2003, when I was 14, I entered Cruiser at the Nationals in CO. We arranged for a well-known handler to show Cruiser. But prior to ring time, the handler determined Cruiser would just not show for him, so I took him in myself. Cut after cut, he worked so hard for me! Cruiser went on to receive an AOM under William Shelton. In 2004, I showed my bred by bitch, CH Bruda Moonlight Over Paris, in the puppy class to win Best Puppy and Group 1 Puppy under George Murray, then Best in Show Puppy under Judy Doniere. More Winning a 5 point specialty major with a young Bruda In A Red PT Cruiser. Fast forward to 2002 and on to an AOM with Ch. Bruda In A Red PT Cruiser. May/June 2014 Winning Best In Show Puppy with Bruda Moonlight Over Paris. Ch. Element A Night To Remember recently, my bred by dog, Ozzy, GCH Element Rock Star, received Best in Specialty under Faye Strauss. Then Ozzy was awarded Best of Breed and a Group 1 under Dr. Anthony DiNardo. Memorable wins under respected Doberman Judges! QQ What was the funniest or most embarrassing moment in the ring? As they say, “It’s not if you fall, but when you fall”. I found this to be true when I was showing my year old Paris daughter, Cajun, CH Element Cajun Night. As I was going around the ring, I tripped on some uneven matting. I went down hard, bait flew everywhere, and I dropped the leash. My loyal Cajun bailed on me and high-tailed it toward the ring exit! Thankfully, another exhibitor caught and returned her. Roger Hartinger, the judge, was great! Once I recovered, he had me go around the ring a few times. I really appreciated that! It helped me regain my composure, and kept the experience positive for Cajun. By the way, I went on to win Best of Breed! Ch. Element Cajun Night at the 2009 DPCA National. QQ What advice would you give others who would like to handle their own dogs? Since you are showing your own dog, you are in control of the condition and training of your dog. Go to conformation classes as often as you can, and follow through with training at home. Keep your dog well groomed and in excellent condition. Present yourself in a professional manner by wearing appropriate clothing, shoes, and hairstyles. Learn ring etiquette and always be ready to enter the ring on time. Don’t be intimidated by the well-known professional handlers. Everyone has to start from somewhere. Pick their brains. They have the most experience and the best tips on how to handle all sorts of situations. Watch for judges that don’t play games and will give the win to a newbie if they are deserving. It’s always a good feeling to know you’ve won because you deserved it, not because of who was on the end of the leash. QQ Closing thoughts on the subject? Know that the relationship you have with your own dog is special. As long as you focus on staying positive and having fun while you cultivate your skills, you can’t lose. BISS GCh. Element Rock Star shown winning Best In Specialty under Faye Strauss in June and a Group 1st under Dr. Anthony DiNardo in December. May/June 2014 The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 31 Q & A with Owner Handler ZELDA CASANOVA, SANDIA DOBERMANS QQ How did you get involved in Doberman Pinschers? In 1987 I was mugged---hit over the head with a butt of a gun and robbed; receiving a severe head injury. It took me months to recover. I had wanted a Doberman for years but kept putting off getting one. The robbery made me realize that time was ticking and life could end any day. WHAT was I waiting for? I lived in Ft. Worth and located Edd & Irene Bivin of Dob Mann, acquiring my first red boy Thunderation Dob Mann. Irene and I went on to co-own ‘Taipan’s’ sister and co-breed together. My Doberman life began! Nancy Wagner from Gemstone was also an inspiration to me, not only with Dobermans, but with Dachshunds. There were many years we “dabbled” in Dachshunds, showing, breeding but mainly enjoying their antics. In 1992, with the support of my husband we founded our kennel, Sandia. We selected the name Sandia for the breathtaking Sandia mountains in New Mexico. Without Bev’s support with grooming, traveling and showing, many of my dog activities would not have come to fruition. I am lucky to have him help with the dogs and cheer me on in my passion! QQ What inspired you to enter the ring as an owner handler? Jim Briley of Aquarius Dobermans inspired me to enter the ring and handle my own dogs back in 1991. Jim made me aware that most judges appreciate seeing new faces in The Sandia Doberman Family 32 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine the ring, owners that are prepared, working with the dog(s) they love — competing. Jim had shown our dogs early on, but he encouraged me to go in the ring confidently with my own dog because I had prepared and had a good dog. Fortunately, I listened to his advice then and again in recent years when he encouraged me to show my dogs myself. Additionally, I have had some expert guidance from my handling classes in Dallas. Verjean Lunenschloss at Top Dog, holds terrific all breed handling classes with excellent instruction that prepares me for the show ring. Peggy McConnell also helps prep me with specific techniques to get dog’s attention and stack quickly. The professional handlers have also been very supportive and kind to me, providing guidance and tips along the way. Preparation is the key! Many hours have been spent watching the ring, handlers, reading, watching all available handler videos and attending seminars. If your dog is groomed well, trained well, you are dressed neatly and you have done your homework for the ring — then showing your pride(s) and joy is the icing on the cake and is extremely rewarding! Because I am not showing every single weekend, my heart races and my adrenaline soars before every ring experience. My nerves continue to be my challenge, but it may also be what keeps me sharp with my dogs. I need to buy stock in Altoids---they do seem to help mask my nervousness down the lead to my dogs. Stoneleigh Dob Mann and me winning the 6-9 Futurity Black Bitch Class May/June 2014 QQ Are you also involved in performance? When I purchased my first conformation Doberman, disappointingly, he didn’t pan out in the conformation ring, so I quickly became aware of obedience. Performance is still my passion. My main focus is obedience and my current Dobe, Wally, is trained through utility however we have yet to enter the ring. We are working to put much needed finishing touches on him prior to showing. I have been increasing my knowledge in other performance areas as well. A few weeks ago we entered our first Barn Hunt and earned a leg in Novice. Lure coursing being opened to all breeds has been a lot of fun for us too. It is wonderful to see our Dobes so well represented in this exhilarating event! Another exciting area we just earned a title in is weight pull. When trained and done properly, this is a very exciting venue where Dobes can also excel. When we have ‘spare’ time, we attend agility classes at a fabulous new facility in our area, What a Great Dog. Dock Diving at Dallas Air Dogs is another really challenging event we are practicing. There is little time to be idle for performance Dobermans! This year was a year of increased learning for me. I entered Zelda and Wally winning 1st place. May/June 2014 UKC and International conformation shows to expand my knowledge of these Clubs and what they have to offer, so I would know about them first hand. These associations have been quite interesting and fun. QQ Did you have a mentor? I have been very fortunate to have Jim Briley as my mentor in conformation and breeding. He has given me a great foundation of knowledge to build on. I reach out to Jim every few weeks for input on a variety of topics, from handling to breeding and judging. Having a successful, experienced mentor, has given me a terrific base to grow from. My dear friend Lynn Eggers is always there to support and give me much needed guidance as well. Not only do I have mentors, but I feel like I have a VILLAGE that help keep SANDIA Kennels performing well, whether it is conformation, obedience or our other areas of interest. Fortunately, living in a large metroplex, we have excellent veterinarians, reproductive specialists and wonderful training venues with knowledgeable professionals willing to share their training tools and tips. QQ To date what has been your most memorable ring experience? My most memorable ring experience was in 1991 at the Chandler, AZ National. I showed Stoneleigh Dob Mann, a puppy from my first litter and he won the 6-9 Puppy Dog Futurity out of a huge class. It was very exciting! When I returned to the room Irene (Bivin) said “Where have you been, the class should have been over a long time ago?” I told her I’d still been showing and we won the class! We both got a laugh out of that. I was recently asked to judge Sweepstakes for the DPC of San Antonio. This was also one of my most memorable experiences from a different perspective! I loved this opportunity and hope to be able to have more ring time in a continued on page 35 judge’s role. Wally in a ‘happy’ heel! Zelda and baby Wally. Zelda and Wally. My most embarrassing moment in the ring was at the Kentucky Nationals year before last. My shoes had gotten wet prior to entering the ring, and the leather had stretched out. We were lead dog in, and going around the ring as a group, my shoe flew off. I stopped to pick it up; the following dogs piled up behind us. SO EMBARRASSING — and at the national! To have that happen after all the preparation was disappointing. However, now I can look back and laugh, but it felt terrible at the time. I’m sure all handlers have moments with their dogs they learn from and these experiences have helped me as an owner/handler. QQ What advice would you give others who would like to handle their own dogs? My advice to others interested in owner/handling would be the following: 1) Align yourself with a good breeder/handler to be a mentor to you; 2) Go to the best conformation/ handling class you can find and attend religiously, and the same goes for performance; 3) Be a student of the breed and continue your education throughout your life whether continued in conformation and/or performance; 4) Be an active participant in DPCA and your local club to keep current. Meet and learn from other Doberman fanciers. Lastly, have thick skin. You are going to have bumps along the way. Don’t take the wins, losses, or ringside comments personally. Enjoy your dog(s) and enjoy the awesome dog people you come in contact with! QQ Any closing thoughts on the subject? My journey that began in the conformation ring continues to flourish in various capacities. One of my greatest joys are our bi-monthly visits to an assisted living facilityChambrel, with Wally in his therapy capacity. The residents thoroughly enjoy Wally’s visits and they ask for him and look forward to seeing him each week. They seem to light up when they interact with a big Doberman boy! While Dobermans are my heart, we have recently added a special Polish imported Chinese Crested to our household. Who knows what experiences lay ahead in and out of the ring with him, but I can’t wait to find out! The owner/handler journey continues!
