Box 132 Fulton, MD 20759 USA The Doberman Pinscher Magazine |21 Ann doesn’t like me to say this, but I have changed from a trophy hunter to a dog lover. Both Ann and I are still very competitive, but temperament has become so important to me. And when you lose one now it’s harder, much harder than it was in the beginning. So where do you want to go from here. It’s hard to imagine myself doing anything else. We had two litters this last year sired by Eddie, but hadn’t used Eddie for four years. In that litter four years ago, there were four puppies one fawn and one blue. That really set me back, mentally. The blue dog, his name is Ch. Cambria’s Rascal Flatts, was one of the best males we ever bred. But he was blue. I can remember Jim Briley telling me when he saw the dog “My gosh if he was red or black you couldn’t stop him”. He was an exceptionally good mover. He was mature when we really started showing the dog, and he finished in 9 shows. Oh we took him out a couple times as a puppy to just get him in the ring. But when he started showing he took only 9 shows. I think for a blue that’s pretty good. This current litter of puppies sired by Eddie are 3 times Eddie and 7 times Cryptonite, through Sinbad and Cambria’s Cavalleria. I have two males that I’ve kept. Both are very nice specimens, I’m really enthused about them. Well I know Ann wants to change gears and be more involved in breeding. That’s what she told us all. I think this next year she is going to get more involved in the whelping and the care of the puppies. It’s different work than traveling around the country. That’s a road show. Oh my gosh, the last two years she averaged over 60,000 miles a year. And last year she went to 160 shows. In 2008 she drove to all the shows. Sometimes, like leaving the 26 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine shows in Waukesha, where the last show is on Tuesday, and having to be somewhere in Maryland or Virginia to show on Wednesday morning. It’s too much of a pace, too hard of a pace. And it‘s really hard on the dogs too. This last October, we were gone 3 weeks straight between the two national specialties and our dogs were so glad to see their own yard. First time ever they didn’t want to get back on the bus for weeks. They did eventually wanted to go back out. Victoria’s Secret that we specialed, she was the happiest at dog shows. She was a very funny bitch. She had a particular chair, that’s where she slept . We’d have to wake her up to make her go outside. At home she was very lazy until it was time for roadwork. Ann would get the leash down for road work and she’d start screaming with excitement. At the shows she’d sleep in the bed, underneath the covers, until it was almost time to go in the ring. She was extremely easy to live with. You’ve collected a lot of dogs, over the years, for your personal use. Have you used it or is it still stored in the freezer waiting for the right bitch? Well, we have a couple of dogs we haven’t bred to. One was a dog named Cambria’s Lasting Impression. I only have one breeding left on him. I did let someone in Georgia with an Eddie daughter breed to him. I’m saving that breeding. He was actually Best Puppy at the Nationals and Best Puppy in Futurity. We finished him. Sam Lawrence saw the dog and was interested in leasing him and have George special him. So we sent him up to Michigan to George, but we didn’t feel like we wanted him to be gone as long as they wanted him, as their contract called for. We have frozen semen on him, somewhere down the road we’ll use it. He was very much a Cryptonite look-a-like. George and his family always said he was the most look-a-like of Cryptonite of any dog he produced. It was very eerie when he came in their home. He acted like Kafka. Cryptonite had lost his favorite toy and then he died. Then after a couple years had passed, Sting came to their home and found Kafka’s toy that had been missing for years! He was from the last live breeding to Cryptonite. And then I have his son collected, Cambria’s Rock Solid, a red dog we put in the top 20 in only 6 months of showing. He had a couple best in shows and 8 or 10 group firsts. He was such a sound moving dog. And then of course I have Secret Desire collected but haven’t used the semen on him yet, or Ann will maybe. We have collected and stored semen other dogs too. That has got to be a valuable tool. I know very little about genetics. My gosh, I can’t compare myself to people like Judy Bingham, who I consider so knowledgeable about genetics. But what has helped us in our breeding program was that I used to have a very good memory. I would remember the dogs and I would remember their offspring, and the health issues. You don’t always get the truth from dog breeders of stud dog owners. But I would remember the dogs. That has helped considerably, for when I consider a dog to breed to, first I have to like the dog, then I have to like the pedigree. Then I would like to see his siblings, as well as some of his puppies. I want to see his brothers or sisters to see if he was a fluke or not. Generally I have always followed that. When I bred to Hunter, and I got Rogan and Dino, I liked the pedigree and I liked the dog, but what I really remembered the most was Joan Witt had three littermates, the dogs Cord and Duesenburg, and Auburn the bitch that were all so nice. I remember the dog and his littermates which were very nice. Behind Sinbad a lot of people don’t The Doberman Pinscher Magazine | 27 know this there was a bitch, Sinbad’s great grandmother, Rahdy’s Ginger Fizz. Ginger Fizz was in Alaska. A woman named Lynn Waffle bought her from Penny Spanola. Talking with Dave and Barbara later, they thought they were going to get Ginger Fizz but Penny sold her to Alaska. I loved that bitch. I tried to buy her from Lynn but she wouldn’t sell her. And then she moved back to the Midwest. She saw Dave at a dog show and asked him who to breed her to. He suggested the dog he was showing. That’s who she bred her to. That’s where he bought Stormhaven’s Desert Wine. That was Mira’s Mist Prince of Lando. Yes. He was a Vintage Year son. Any way, I took photographs of the bitch and I gave them to Dave and Barbara later on. When I bred to Sinbad, we, Ann and I , had the first litter out of Sinbad and were the first to breed to him. I remembered him and his brother and sister from the nationals in Phoenix, Arizona. I think the bitch went RWB from the 6-9 puppy class. We bred our Boo Radley daughter, Ch Florowill Bit of Magic, the dam of 21 champions. I bred her to him, and got an exceptionally nice litter. Then I bred a Cairo daughter to him. That was Eddie’s mother. That was Ch Cambria’s Nocona v Texas, Boots is what we called her. That was his last litter. We actually got the first and the last litter from Sinbad. So I felt very fortunate, as he only produced 13 litters. If he had been bred more and lived longer than that, he would have put some big numbers up there as far producing. He was a great, great sire. His kids carried his legacy on for him. Yes Chaos and Eddie and the others. Dave and Barbara have to be very proud, really. What do you think of sending these dogs all over the world? 28 | The Doberman Pinscher Magazine I think that probably there are as good homes over there that are as good as some of the homes we have over here. The times that I went to England, to Crufts and then toured breeders kennels over there, pointer breeders over there. I thought to myself what if they hadn’t shared some of the terriers that we still get from England and the pointers, if they hadn’t shared them with us, what would we have. I was responsible for the dog Marienburg‘s Cannon going to Argentina. I was contacted by an architect that lived in Miami. He was looking for a dog for a friend of his in Argentina, the proprietor of Samurai Kennel. His name was Tshiro he was a Japanese man who lived there. He was in the landscape business. Also in my past travels I had met a girl in California, Jacki Qurois Kubat, who showed for Rancho Dobes Kennels. Her dad was the Attache for the Argentine embassy in Los Angeles. She was known for her whippets. Now she ‘s an all breed judge down in Argentina and considered an Annie Clark of Argentina. Jacki encouraged me to find this man a dog. Jim Bennett owned Cannon at the time. Marienburg’s Cannon was sired by Sunhawk and his dam was Marienburg’s Only One. Cannon was Mary Hartman’s brother. And Mary Hartman was #1 dog all breeds one year, maybe two. Jim had a little problem with Cannon with aggression. Jim lived in a condo which had inside entrances. He was concerned meeting someone in the hallway, because Cannon was aggressive. He wanted to sell him so I introduced him to this Argentinean. He was sold Marienburg’s Cannon. Cannon is 9 times behind Lex Luthor. It’s a different country, their life and their laws are a lot different than ours. They like their dogs to be hot, so to speak. I’ve been down there 3 or 4 times and they do like their dogs to be hot. If Cannon had never gone down there we would never have had a Lex Luthor. He ‘s has certain- ly been a contributor to the breed up here. I’ve thought about that . It certainly depends on the country. Some of the countries don’t value a dog the same way we do here. Some years ago I went to Taiwan for a dog show with Jim Bennett. I found it was certainly different over there. . . . At maturity, Dragon finished in three weekends with Ann White. I see in some breeds there are global gene pools, like you pointed out with some of the terriers and the pointers. People are shuffling dogs back and forth between North America and Europe in these breeds. The Dobermans have not been quite like that, they’ve been more regional. Yes they have been. The Standards for the Doberman are different in these countries. That’s the crux of it. The standards are not the same. The dogs are not the same. In South America, they follow the FCI standard which is different. It ‘s a larger dog and a straighter dog. They don’t call for a 45degree lay back of shoulder. In Australia and New Zealand, who follow the English standard, it calls for a bitch can be somewhat longer in loin. They explain that it’s for whelping puppies, and not to penalize a bitch for being a little longer in loin. They do address the size of the ear in Australia, New Zealand, and England. It’s a smaller ear. Gosh some of our dogs, we’ve never had to face the issue of smaller ears because we crop them. But some of the ears are huge, long ears, in comparison to theirs over there. The Doberman’s haven’t experienced the level of traffic that terriers and pointers have. And yes their traffic is both ways. We don’t see that level of two way traffic in Dobes. The incredible winning that took place by my 17 month old Francesca pups made me so proud! I came to the Nationals knowing that my litter had a lot to offer in terms of quality and breed type. I truly believed they had the potential to succeed and be future contenders. I certainly have learned a lot of lessons along the way, however, my goal never faded as I came to the Nationals to WIN! It takes the efforts of each member to accomplish this goal! I can’t say enough about the stellar performance and handling expertise of Rose Benanti and Karin Fox. When Rose presented her own bitch CH. Francesca’s Bringin Sexy Back -Brit and went WB and BOW at the Regional Host Club, it was a magical performance. Never in my dreams could I imagine that the experience could surpass my previous expectations when Rose and Brit went Age Division Winner 15 plus months, Futurity Best JR, and GRAND PRIZE Futurity Winner! This was like winning “Olympic Gold.” The Breeders statue made me so proud of the Reese - Blue lineage and exemplifies the Francesca name! I was also impressed with Karin’s presentation of CH. Francesca’s House of BluesDakota who took a third place win in a very competitive AOAC JR 15 plus class. Karin does an outstanding job of caring and conditioning my dogs while they live in their home away from home. She currently is handling Francesca’s Blue Crush On You - “Crush” who has just started his show career. Someone who has become an amazing mentor and has provided guidance and wisdom from the beginning is Mary DependahlRavenswoods. She has provided me with an enormous amount of information and the insight to start an outstanding breeding program. This culminated in the breeding of my lovely red BIS bitch “Reese” to BISS CH. Ravenswoods Azure Sky - “Blue.” I am equally elated about the phenomenal accomplishments that CH. Francesca’s Bewitched - “Samantha” has achieved. Our beautiful red girl is a Multiple Best of Breed / Group Winner and is currently ranked 12th in the Top Twenty! She has risen to fame in a short period of time and is handled by Dawn Honaker. These littermates from birth were special in so many ways! Each possesses a unique personality, fiery spirit and what I like to call the Kelly Marquis winning attitude! Outside of the ring many people have contributed to the success of the Francesca line. These unwavering team members include my sister Tami, my nephew Michael, Darla, Dr. John Fleming and the staff at Prairie State Animal Hospital. Their efforts do not go unnoticed and are very much appreciated. A sincere thank you to the judges and competitors who have recognized the standard of excellence in the Francesca pups. To my owners, the nurturing love and devotion you provide each day make you a “Best in Show” winner; finally, a special thank you to The Doberman Pinscher Magazine for giving me the opportunity to share my experience as a new breeder.
