We have had rescues of various breeds for years and
rescues of older Dobermans over the last 10 years.
Reba was the first Doberman I actually bought two
years ago with the intention to show. Showing looked
simple. How hard can it be to run your dog around a
circle? Boy, did I have a lot to learn and am still learning.
I owe thanks to Odelie Harsha who showed me how
to tape ears. Thanks to Reba’s handler Kerry Boyd
for taking us on as newbies to get Reba’s Champion
at 15 months, Grand at 18 months and Bronze at 22
months. Thank you to Judge Anthony DiNardo who
awarded Reba her first major from the 6-9 class. That
encouraged us to keep on showing. We also want to
thank our other handlers who stepped up to the plate
coming together to assist us on our journey. Thank
you to all the other people we have met through the
show world who have offered us encouragement
and guidance. Last, but not least, thank you to Reba’s
breeder, Betsy Zellmer, for taking that chance on us
and entrusting us with her little girl. Reba has exceeded
any expectation we had ever had for her.

Due to technically difficulties with my OCR equipment I was not able to
reproduce the article on Ch. Carosel Make My Day. I am working to get things
right again and will bring you Carol’s 2001 article in the next issue.
The New Title Holders addition has had a nice response from readers. I do
apologize for somehow overlooking the June 2013 titles. The owners of both
new champion Eagle Ridge Primetime Sanstone and new CGC Hoytts Czarina
Alexia notified me of the oversight. Again my apologies. You will also notice the
titles are now alphabetical order rather than by category, this is how the AKC
statistics come in and leaving it this way will reduce errors.

THE STORY OF

Merrimac Dobermans
Could it be 40 years since I owned and loved my first
Doberman? It was 1974, Richard Nixon was still President
and the early days of the Internet were still 10 years away!
So many years, so many unforgettable friends, both canine
and human. . . And so many adventures along my continuing journey in the sport and breeding of Dobermans!
The Baby Steps
Like so many fellow breeders who dedicate so much
of their lives to their animals, my love of the Doberman
breed began with baby steps. I owned many dogs as a child
and always took in strays, even during my college days
at McNeese University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. There
was my beloved Dachshund-mix “Hoov,” appropriately
named after the vacuum cleaner. She became my constant
companion after I rescued her as a nursing puppy from a
convenience store. And there was my devoted Mac, a Labrador rescue, full of personality but deathly fearful of loud
noises. But, one of those early strays was a young, black
male Doberman. We shared a few days before his owner
was located and the dog returned, but that brief introduction
was enough to lay the foundation for my lifelong dedication
to the breed.
In 1974, I took the next step by purchasing a black
Doberman bitch from a pet breeder. Sheba, a real alpha,
was a testy learning experience for me. Five years later, I
had learned a great deal about the breed and knew what I
wanted, in terms of conformation, personality, and performance. I purchased a pick black male from Bob and Nancy
Vandiver of Mistel Dobermans. Mistel’s Doomsday Defense,
or “Mo,” became an American Champion and gained his
Working Aptitude Certificate (WAC). This was the launch
of Merrimac Doberman Kennel — mine.
Since then, so many friends have made an indelible
mark on my life in this breed -- and so many top-notch dogs
have carried the banner for Merrimac. I can’t begin to do all
of them justice in this article, but I will highlight a few. The
others, no less important, know who they are.
Beginning in Dobermans with My Family
I owe so much in my life to my husband Roy, who
passed away in 2005. He was a loving and dedicated partner. Without his absolute love of the individual dogs – he
was not a fan of dog shows – I doubt I would have found
the time and energy to breed and show Dobermans. Our
daughter, Melissa, is now married with a family of her own.
They are also dog lovers. I can still see my young Melissa,
sitting in the whelping box, helping me with new puppies. I
am a retired teacher, and it was quite a job – but so rewarding – juggling family, work, and dogs. I am grateful to have
more time now for dogs, but it seems to zip by even faster.
My Mentors
Every dog breeder I know started with a mentor; I was
no exception. The wild child Sheba that I purchased in 1974
needed work. After advice from Kay Etner of Tannenwald
Kennels, I joined an obedience class and began attending
local breed matches. It was at my first match that I met Bob
and Nancy Vandiver, who took me under their wing and
guided my early path through the breeding and dog-show
world. Bob handled Mo to his championship, and I was
truly hooked by that time.

call away in the early days. Florence
owned CH Florowill Haus Maus, Winners Bitch at the 1972 National.
When Bob’s employer transferred
him to the Netherlands, I was suddenly on my own and forced to learn
further about breeding and showing
without the Vandivers. I obtained
a Mo daughter, who became Merrimac’s first champion, CH Merrimac’s
Doomsday Shake WAC. I bred Shake
to the Vandivers’ CH Mistel’s Texas
Driller, at a difficult time for Dobermans in America. The Doberman had
been near the top of the AKC registrations and breed overpopulation was
at a high. Doberman puppies were
selling in the newspaper at the price
of two for $50.
Four of the puppies from that
breeding had championship potential,
but finding show homes was difficult. The time was the 80’s; I was an
unknown breeder and a young working mother. I was starry-eyed with my
first litter, but not until I had accrued
years of experience and knowledge
did I realize the depth of quality in
that litter. I kept only two, the beautiful red bitches, Merrimac’s Pickpocket
(Picket) and Merrimac’s Grande Larceny (Lacey). They became my foundation stock.

Picket and Lacey were bred to
two separate bloodlines – Picket to CH
Glen Coe’s Armani, and Lacey to Ch
Bikila’s Jet Setter of Marks-Tey – and
my foundation girls produced two of
the most important and beloved treasures of my breeding career. Picket
delivered to me the red bitch Encie,
who went on to become a Best in
Show (BIS) and Top 20 competitor.
Lacey gave me my “ultimate” red boy,
Shanghai, a Reserve Winners Dog
from the Bred-By class at the 1993
Nationals and whom I always referred
to as a “king among dogs.”
Picket’s Legacy: Encie
Picket was a substantial bitch with
beautiful lines, a rock-hard topline,
and a sweet soul. She disliked the
show ring, but as is often the case,
those who do not perform inside the
ropes of the show ring will display
their strength inside the whelping box.
I bred Picket three times. Margaret
and Wallace Downey’s CH Glen Coe
of Armani joined with her to produce
a little red bitch, whom we referred
to as “Teensy Eensy.” She was quite
spirited, and she gave hell to those
boys in the litter!
Her name evolved simply to
“Encie,” better known in the Doberman world as CH Merrimac’s ShootEm-Up. Encie won her Futurity class
“Lacey”, Merrimac’s Grande Larceny
and was Reserve 12-15 Futurity winner
at the 1992 National. She quickly
gained championship points. But she
needed majors, which were scarce
at the time in Texas, so breeder-handler Michele Santana quickly finished
Encie’s championship for me in the
Northwest. Encie and I did some
Specials winning in Texas, but it was
Margaret Downey who helped me
elevate Encie’s profile and record by
linking her up with the late and great
handler Jeanenne Thompson. It was
a master-stroke by Margaret, a longtime Doberman fancier, breeder, now
judge, and a true lady I deeply admire.
Jeanenne and Encie were fantastic
together and compiled an exemplary
record, including being a BIS and a
Top 20 contender. Encie loved “Miss
Jeanenne” dearly, and the feeling was
mutual. It was a hard day when
I picked Encie up for the last time
from her -- I remember the sight of
Jeanenne walking away, trying to hide
her tears.
Lacey’s Legacy: Shanghai
Lacey, the other half of my kennel’s foundation stock, was not destined to finish her championship. The
independent Lacey was exquisite with
perfect shoulders. She won the BredBy class at the National in Houston
in 1989. I was determined to finish
her myself. But it was not to be. I
even flew to the Midwest on back-toback weekends in search of majors
– and she went Reserve four times!
Because Father Time was marching
on, I decided to breed her. Like Picket,
Lacey proved her strength was in the
whelping box.
Breeder, Rod Humphries, and I
became friends in the 80’s. He had
started with Marks-Tey/Damasyn stock
in the 60’s in Australia and had a black
“stallion” of a stud named CH Bikila’s
Jet Setter of Marks-Tey. Rod still lives
not far away from me in the Houston
area. I loved Jet Setter, especially for
his stellar front assembly. He was all
dog, a “macho” man. In 1992, he and
Lacey gave me my beloved red boy,
CH Merrimac’s Shanghai Red WAC.
He was proud, bold, confident, handsome, and gentle. He was “the whole
package.” I was honored that the late
breeder-judge, Tommie Jones, gave
Shanghai the award of Reserve Winners Dog from the Bred-By class at the
Nationals in San Diego in 1993.
Shanghai was “into leather” when
the “girls” came to visit him. When
my bitches were in season, he would
intensify his fetish by furtively combing
through closets for belts and purses
and secretively chewing them to pieces. One afternoon, when my daughter Melissa came home from school
with what must have been a very
appealing backpack with leather trimming, Shanghai jumped up and pulled
it from her shoulder! That escapade
remains one of my favorite Shanghai
stories.
Shanghai sadly left us too soon.
At age 7, he developed cancer in his
shoulder. Despite radiation to slow the
growth and ease the pain, I made the
difficult decision to let him go. It was
a devastating time, as Picket passed
away two days later, a month shy of
12 years of age. I still have a vivid
memory of walking through the backyard after losing them, and I swear I
heard Shanghai’s footsteps in the grass
behind me. I felt that he was following
me as he had done for years -- he was
telling me “goodbye” one last time,
and he and Picket would be okay.
Encie’s Legacy:
Poseidon and Tallulah
Encie passed away on Valentine’s
Day 2002. It is hard to believe that was
12 years ago. She died in my arms. It
was unbearable watching her leave
me. The circle of life spins much more
quickly for our dogs, and losing these
three most-special ones was a very difficult time for me. Life has to go on,
but the loss of any dog I have owned,
cared for, or bred, is one of the most
difficult things I continue to face.
Encie was not “just a pretty face.”
She was also a producer: several generations later Merrimac had yet another BIS winner and Top 20 contender,
the black male, CH Merrimac’s Poseidon on Board. If one can follow this
sequence: I bred Encie to CH Kai Esa
II Son of a Sailor, who produced CH
Merrimac’s Gibralter, owned by Judy
Smith; and a pretty red bitch whom
I kept at home, Merrimac’s Too Hot
Brazil, or simply “Anna.” I bred Anna
in turn to CH Gemrose Cavalier v
Promise, giving me a beautiful litter
with sisters CH Merrimac’s Babalu
(Darla), owned by Chris and Barbara
McBirnie, and CH Merrimac’s Viva
Valencia WAC. Anna also gave me
Rikki, CH Merrimac’s Red Rickshaw
WAC, a typey red bitch who, bred
to Poseidon, produced the awesome
Obedience Top 20 CH MACH Merrimac’s Irish Selkie VCD2 GO RE MXS
MJS NJP XF CGC ROM, owned and
trained by Kathy McLemore, DVM.
I showed a handsome red male
for Rod Humphries, CH Bikila’s Qanah
of Marks-Tey, and I was on the lead
when he won an Award of Merit at
a mere 16 months of age at the 1996
Nationals in Minneapolis. I decided I
wanted a piece of that boy and bred
him to a lovely, pointed black bitch,
Merrimac’s Sweet Cheeks, or Chika,
who needed more body. I got body,
alright, in the black male offspring, CH
Merrimac’s Start Me Up (Mick), owned
by Julie Moore. Finally, when Mick

Shanghai Red, WAC

was bred to CH Merrimac’s Babalu
(Darla), the result was one of my great
dogs, the black male CH Merrimac’s
Poseidon on Board, co-owned with
my dear friend, Sara Casper.
Breeders are blessed when they
find an owner or co-owner who will
agree to allow puppies placed with
them to be shown and/or bred. Many
are only looking for companion dogs,
and we breeders interrupt their lives
with their dogs, often with requests
to help keep our kennel’s bloodline
flowing by breeding the dogs we have
placed with them. I am fortunate to
have placed dogs with many good
owners over the years. One family that
made a real difference to my breeding program was Chris and Barbara
McBirnie, who owned Babalu (Darla).
They allowed me to finish her and get
a litter from her – the result was not
only the superstar Poseidon, but also
his littermates, CH Merrimac’s Titania
Mania (Tallulah), co-owned with Julie
Moore; Obedience Top 20 contender
CH Merrimac’s Nova Nike CDX RA,
owned by Buddy and Brenda Lunsford; and CH Merrimac’s Morpheus
at Midnite, owned by Viola Galicki.
Another beautiful black pointed bitch,
Merrimac’s Aphrodite, was unfortunately lost to my breeding program.
That was a hard one to swallow.
Both Poseidon and Tallulah,
multi-champion producers and dogs
I believe to be unparalleled in many
respects even to this day, have contributed significantly to my breeding program. Poseidon “floated” around the
ring, and his front assembly was one
to envy. He consistently passed that
front on to his get, among them his
daughter, CH Paradigm Parasol (Pari),
a real firecracker still going strong at
almost 11 years of age and dam of two
of my current three breeding bitches.
A quick look at some of the dogs
pictured in this article will show you
what I believe to be the near-perfect
shoulders and the type passed down
from him.
Poseidon lived with my friend
Sara. We were crushed when he was
diagnosed with occult dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) on an echocardiogram. He participated in Dr. Sonja
Gordon’s DCM study at Texas A&M’s
veterinary school for three or so years
until the study ended and he died in
his 11th year from an unrelated injury,
ironically never showing any clinical
symptoms of DCM or cardio disease.
I can’t speak highly enough of Dr. Gordon, and I thank her for her generous
donation made in Poseidon’s memory.
Tallulah and Poseidon’s Legacy
Tallulah, bred to CH Mariah’s
Monogram Von Koepsel, produced
two of the most beautiful and besttempered Dobermans I have bred,
the lovely CH Merrimac’s Margarita

red champion Qanah and I knew he
would hate to be without a red male
for long. Gentleman Jim had been at
home with me for six months when
I contacted Rod and asked him if he
was interested in this magnificent dog.
He happened to be in the area on
business, dropped by to see Gentleman Jim, took one look and in about
one second decided he wanted him.
I handled Gentleman Jim until he finished his Championship at 11 months.
Tallulah’s only other breeding was
a collaborative effort with the Vandivers and Julie Moore. There were four
champions from that litter: CH Mistel’s
Moxie Merrimac and CH Mistel’s Mia
Merrimac, owned by the Vandivers;
BISS CH Mistel’s Mojo Merrimac RN
CGC TDI OA OAJ ROM, owned by
Sharon Bruno; and CH Merrimac’s

these went on to produce champions,
including the Vandivers’ Award of
Merit and Top 20 CH Mistel’s Anything You Can Do, CD Sch. BH.

Rita had three blockage surgeries,
all due to her love for pecans. She
made sure she got them down before
any of the other dogs or people could
take them away! As a result, I feel
fortunate to have two litters and a
total of eight puppies from her. One is
CH Merrimac’s Blue Moon Run WAC
(Blue), who fell four points shy of his
GCH, hindered by a large benign
tumor near his shoulder. Another is
GCH Merrimac’s Misano Run (Ducati).
In January of 2011, a co-breeding
of Marcia Harvey’s (Brachmar Dobermans) bitch, Merrimac’s Da-Doo-RunRun (Patti), to GCH Alpha’s The Conquistador RN RA TDI ROM (Boss),
produced two handsome males that
finished quickly. I had long admired
Boss and his breeder Susanne Smith.
GCH Brachmar’s Revolution v. Merrimac CGC (Zeus), owned by Bill
Bowes, Esq., finished and completed
his GCH quickly with two BISS. Then
his brother stepped out to shine —

Brachmar’s Intrepidation v Merrimac
CGC (Razz), owned by Melanie Walker, DVM. He also sailed right through
to his championship. Another brother,
Merrimac’s Reflection v. Brachmar
(Beckham), co-owned with Judy Howell, needs only two points to complete
his title.
Much of my breeding program
today revolves around Poseidon’s
daughter Pari, CH Paradigm’s Parasol. I am fortunate that I had the
opportunity to breed her. Owner Rod
Humphries contracted with me to
breed Pari to Gentleman Jim, asking
me to raise the litter under his Bikila
prefix. Rod only wanted two pups
from the litter. He took the “rainbow”
girls, blue Bikila’s Waltzing Matilda of
Merrimac Marks-Tey and fawn, Bikila’s
Wattle Gold of Merrimac Marks-Tey.
Two other bitches of that superior
litter reside at Merrimac, the black
Winnie, CH Bikila’s Wisteria of Merrimac Marks-Tey, who won an Award
of Merit at the National in Kentucky in
2012, and the red Willa, Bikila’s Wilhelmina of Merrimac Marks-Tey.
Winnie and Willa are now six
years of age. Where does the time go?
Both were bred, two months apart, to
CH Merrimac’s Blue Moon Run WAC.
To date, they have produced four
champions: CH Merrimac’s Fire Moon
CGC TDI (Teyla), owned by Ron and
Denise Siwecki; CH Merrimac’s Out
of the Blue (Anja), owned by Terry and
Sheila Necessary; my new CH Merrimac’s Blue Valentine; and CH Merrimac’s Over the Moon (Jaci), owned
by Jerry and Kathy Drake. Jaci finished
with four majors. Having just celebrated their second birthday, Merrimac’s
Lady Moonlight (Mystere), owned by
Thomas Luft; and Merrimac’s Man on
the Moon (Walker), owned by Greg
and Liz Kelish, should finish this year.
Winnie’s second litter, sired by
Bob Hennessey’s Top 20 GCH Francesca’s House of Blues (Dakota), just
turned one year old. Three of the
four puppies are in show homes and,
though shown sparingly, have done
quite well. The black CH Merrimac’s
Chase Manhattan CGC (The Banker),
owned by Marilyn H. David, Esq.,
finished at 13 months with a Best
of Breed from the puppy class over
Specials. The red Merrimac’s Gold
Card (Midas), owned by Lawrence
Hollander, has been out to show only
three times, with two Reserve awards
at the competitive Reliant Circuit at six
months of age, and back-to-back wins
his last time out with a Best of Opposite. I co-own their sister, Merrimac’s
Charge It (Visa), with Sam and Ali Starteri; Visa has a Best Puppy win and we
have plans to get her back in the ring
soon. I am delighted with this new
generation and thankful to the owners
for their support, and the opportunity
to handle these promising young dogs.
The Question “Why”
On reflection, I think all breeders
at some time question why. . . why we
continue to do this. . . why we work so
hard, spend so much time and money,
get so frustrated by failures and people

we mistakenly thought were decent,
endure the heartbreak of losing dogs,
finding new homes for good dogs
because of human fault and error. The
list is long. It has to be the passion we
have for the breed that keeps us going.
I would like to pass on one of
the things I learned along the way. A
breeder must carefully guard his or
her reputation for honesty and integrity, and I believe that such long-time
breeders as this can contribute to
our breed and our sport by providing
mentorship to novice puppy owners and/or those not as experienced
in handling, breeding, and showing
dogs. I believe that novice puppy
owners are best served by looking to
breeders who have repeatedly proven
their mettle in an established breeding and showing program, filled with
many years and preferably decades
of dedication evidenced by handson experience, personal hard work,
and several generations of well-bred
Dobermans recognized as such by
the fancy. One of the answers to the
question “why” is that we decadeslong breeders and handlers have a
lot to pass on in mentoring novices to
our breed and to the dog-show world.
And we must step up to meet this
challenge!
Another Answer to the Question
“Why”
Of course, another answer to the
question “why” is to improve the
Doberman breed. When it comes
to breeding, I operate under several
cardinal principles. First, it is always
my aim to analyze the entire picture of
an individual dog against the standard.
Too many newcomers to the sport and
judges focus on individual parts and
not the total dog. I have a few pet
peeves, like what I consider to be bad
feet or straight shoulders, but I have
learned to balance them in my mind’s
eye for the big picture.
I look for a match where the dog
and the bitch complement each other,
knowing what I need to improve, and
the strength and weaknesses of each

animal, as well as those of their ancestors. For example, years ago, I felt I
needed stronger rears in my dogs. So,
I looked for sires who could give my
line better rear musculature, tone, and
angulation. The result: now I have
sturdy, correct rears in my bloodline,
as exemplified by my present brood
bitches, Winnie, Willa, and Valentine,
who are pictured in this article.
My practice is not to make decisions based upon photographs of and
hearsay regarding stud dogs. I want to
personally meet the dog and get my
hands on him so that I can judge his
temperament and watch him move.
Photos are not always reliable or representative. I like to look at his get to
judge consistency, and what he produces when mixed with certain types
of bloodlines (genotypes) and appearance (phenotypes).
I am pleased that my dogs are
becoming more consistent in their
physical attributes. I started zeroing
in on shoulders with my very first
bitch, Shake, whose photo appears
in this article. Shoulders are now the
strength of my breeding program, with
a smooth flow from a nice headpiece
and neck into the shoulders. Good
shoulders are rare in Dobermans
today and hard to lock into a bloodline. I don’t want to lose mine. One
can see an example of those shoulders
in photos of successive generations:

Pedigrees, temperament, and
health are paramount. Again, the key
is to look at the whole picture presented in the sire and the dam with
regard to these and other factors. To
illustrate, I perform comprehensive
health testing of the parents. It is very
important, but it is not everything to
be considered in a breeding. There
is no doubt that, with our small gene
pool, we breeders must be cautious
when it comes to the health consequences of our breedings. However,
with our small gene pool, things could
easily be made worse, by breeding
with “tunnel-vision,” in other words,

by breeding to eliminate one health
issue without looking at the impact of
a breeding on the entire picture and
balance of other factors in Doberman
make-up. I believe that, overall, most
established, responsible breeders do
the best they can with what stock is
available and with what experience
has taught them. I believe that most
of my colleagues, who are breeders engaged in longtime, recognized
breeding programs, keep in mind the
impact of each match on the total picture of the ideal Doberman — the dog
we all strive to produce.
To the Beginners. . .
To those just beginning in the
breed, know that you have chosen
the best of the dog world. I love the
Doberman breed and I love our breed
standard. Study it well, do your homework, find a reputable breeder and
mentor, work hard, be responsible,
and develop a tough skin. You will
have much joy, but you must be able
to get right back up when you are
knocked down. Be strong enough to
face heartache. Also, the Doberman is
a working breed, not a marshmallow,
and you must be aware of this fact
and its implications in today’s society.
That is a subject to elaborate upon on
another day and time!
High Points of My Journey
These past 40 years in Dobermans have been an incredible journey.

In 2009, one of the highlights of my
career was judging Futurity Juniors
at the Doberman Pinscher Club of
America (DPCA) National Specialty
in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. I awarded
the Best Junior in Futurity title to
a stunning, young red bitch, now
GCH Francesca’s Bringin’ Sexy Back,
bred by Shari Demitrowicz. She was
owner-handled by Rose Benanti and
went on to become Grand Prize Futurity Winner. I judged sweepstakes and
matches before the Futurity, but what
an amazing experience to be at our
National Futurity on the other side of
handling, making a definitive call on
such a large, quality entry. I think of
going into judging from time to time,
but I have never taken the first step to
do so. Perhaps I still may.
The people who join in on one’s
journey are always a high point. I
thank those who have mentored me in
the past, starting with Bob and Nancy
Vandiver back in the 70’s. Thank you
to the many long-standing friends I
have made in the dog world, beginning with my close friend Sara Casper.
We met in the late 80’s, when I finished her first Doberman, CH Empire’s
Apollo v. Barney, CD. We frequently
travel to shows and she has owned
several of my dogs. Sara’s husband,
Gary, frequently mans the ship while
Sara and I are out on our adventures, both dog- and non-dog-related.
Author/journalist Rod Humphries has
been a special friend since we met
Awarding Best Junior in Futurity to

in the 80’s. We have co-bred and
co-owned Dobermans, and I handled
many of his dogs. The friendship and
support of Kathy Drake, long-time
Doberman owner and fancier, has
meant so much. Since I am just a hair
above computer-illiterate, a special
thank-you to Chloe Moore, who created my Merrimac Dobermans website
in 2008 and who keeps it up to date.
She has designed a number of magazine ads, including several that can be
seen accompanying this article.
I don’t have a count of how many
champions or performance-dog titlists
I have bred, but I am fortunate to have
my fair share. I thank their owners for
allowing me to be so privileged. Many
of my puppies go to pet homes, and
I thank their owners as well. It does
not matter if there is a title by a dog’s
name, because every dog I have bred
is important – I thank each of them
for the meaning, purpose and joy they
have given my life.
One of my favorite quotes is, “life
is not measured by the number of
breaths we take, but by the moments
that take our breath away.” Each
dog I’ve bred has given me special
moments to remember; it is those
thousands of moments that make so
many sweet memories to celebrate
and to keep with me when the dogs
are gone. That is really the ultimate
answer to the question “why.” g

of Nikki’s BIS, Top 20 qualifier and
Award of Merit Winner, Ch. Merrimac’s Poseidon on Board. Qanah
was co-owned by Jeanne Spence but
returned home to Bikila when Jeanne
passed away.

The mother of these Super Models (and Phoenix, below), Katarina, was the DPCA’s Top Producing Dam of 1996. The very competitive
sisters – the black Pandora and red Pazia— were tagged “The Girls,” by Nikki who always had strategy problems when they consistently
won their respective Open classes. Nikki was disappointed that Bikila never campaigned any of its dogs beyond championship status.
Pazia did go to Nationals, though, and twice made the final cut in the Best of Breed and won BOS at the host specialty in 1996.

When Qanah passed away, Nikki knew Rod Humphries could not be without a substantial “old school” red male and
offered him six-month-old Merrimac’s Gentleman Jim, a great grandson of Qanah, whose championship came at 11
months. Rod named him “JJ” after the historically famous heavyweight boxing champion, Gentleman Jim (James J.)
Corbett and he became the pride of Bikila/Marks-Tey. When Joanna Walker of Marks-Tey saw him for the first time in
the Nationals at 12 months she described him as “drop dead gorgeous.” True to form, Bikila never campaigned JJ, although
Nikki did win a Group with him when Rod left him with Nikki when he traveled overseas!

after almost half a century with this major award at
the Doberman National.
When there was an impasse between co-owners of the black female Ch. Paradigm Parasol, a great granddaughter of
Qanah, Rod Humphries negotiated to buy Pari and contracted with Nikki to breed her to JJ and raise what would be
Bikila’s “W” litter. The rainbow litter, born in 2008, was a huge success and Bikila was delighted that its long career in
breeding and showing ended on a high note with an Award of Merit for Ch. Bikila’s Wisteria of Merrimac Marks-Tey,
owned by Nikki, at the 2012 DPCA National in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.

Because this issue is the stud dog
issue, I would like to talk about our
D.P.C.A. data base, DobeQuest. Every
Doberman Pinscher can have its own
page where a person can see a wealth
of information for said dog. When
your Doberman’s name appears in the
AKC new title holders list he/she usually gets listed in DobeQuest by the
committee. It is up to you to go in and
update your dog. You can put all of
the health stats and health testing on
your dog’s page as well as the owner,
the breeder, the pedigree and you can
upload your Doberman’s picture as
well. If you are a DPCA member you
can edit your own dog. If you are not,
you can go in as a visitor and look. If
you want to edit your dog, you can
contact Cathy Kendrick right from the
first page where you enter. I hope that

you will find DobeQuest.
Also we are doing our exciting
new DPM Stud Book, when we are
looking for a dog to breed our bitch
to, we can use these pages to gain a
lot of knowledge about whatever we

are looking at the parents of a puppy
that we are interested. The key though
is to update your dog’s page frequently. It is important too to update
the date of death too so one can look
for longevity when we are looking at
potential dogs that we are interested
in. I try to do this myself. I personally
don’t have a problem listed the cause
of a particular dog’s cause of death
even if it is DCM.
Did you know that you can click
onto any dog in the pedigree on
DobeQuest and learn about that dog
too. You can click onto the dogs in
the fourth generation and see (hopefully) another 4 generations. With my
personal dogs, a person can trace
their pedigrees way back into the 30’s
and even further. I am just telling you
this to give you a small example about
how we can use DobeQuest in our
research. If you love to see pedigrees
of our Doberman’s breeding history
you can. I like DobeQuest so much; I
will go in and just click on a dog and
see what I can learn about the dog.

with the evaluations, an educational
program and we have a GREAT pot
luck lunch. It is always a FUN day. Eve
Auch will be our evaluator this year.

QQ First let me congratulate you on your AKC Lifetime
Achievement Award for Companion Animal Events! What
a thrill it must have been. Did you know you were going
to be nominated?
It was indeed an honor to be nominated for this prestigious award. Yes, I knew I was being nominated by the
Desert Valley Doberman Pinscher Club. Mimi Brown called
me to tell me the club had made my nomination. What a
wonderful gesture!

QQ Tell us about your first Doberman.
My first Doberman Sirena was purchased in Chicago,
IL. she came home to Texas with me in 1963. In 1967 she
was the top winning Doberman in Obedience. It was a thrill
for sure, but more than that, she was the light of my life.
When she passed away at age 10, I could not even say her
name for 6 months. I had never lost a dog before and the
emotion was overwhelming. It is still horrible to lose one of
mine, but never as heart-breaking as with her. Sirena had
been spayed, so never bred, but I always wished I had had a
puppy from her. Since my heart was breaking, I purchased
a puppy from breeder Richard Clayton. She was out of Ch
Tolivar’s Aristotle of Azteca LC-11D x Kiesel v Tontonne
CDX and became Ch Kropka von Tontonne. Rex Vandeventer finished her for me and Teresa Nail specialed her.
QQ I see you’ve done some early breedings with Dob Mann
and Tolivar. Were the Bivins and Anna Platt your mentors?
Yes, I bred several litters with my best friend Irene Nail.
She was quite experienced in breeding good Dobermans
and I worked closely with her in selecting a stud dog and
whelping my first litters. Edd Bivin’s input was wonderful,
as he was not only a Doberman judge but also so knowledgable as a true ‘dog man’. Funny, they often did not
agree, but I loved the dialogue and always felt I benefited
tremendously from the discussions. Ann always did ears
and was a good friend.
QQ I find it interesting you’ve bred many conformation
Champions and yet you are an Obedience judge. Tell us
how the decision to judge Obedience came about.
I started in the breed with obedience and naturally
went into judging obedience. I am so busy with obedience
judging there is no time to apply to judge conformation,
but I love watching the breed and being a ‘ringside evaluator’. I personally think breeders should breed for more than

conformation. Dobermans should possess the structure and
the temperament to do the job they were bred to do. Being
Dobermans means they will protect me and my family if
necessary. Along with that they must first and foremost be
a family pet.
At Foxhall, I always finish my dogs first and then move
into performance. (The name Foxhall came from my maiden name, Fox; the Hall was added to make it sound better!)
If these Champions have the ability, then Schutzhund is
next...hence Laura.
Of course, all the credit for Laura being the first AKC
Champion bitch to earn a Schutzhund 3 goes to Jill and
Art Graves. When we first talked about this I was a little
worried, not about letting them have her but because I had
never before sent one of my dogs out for training. I said,
“How long?” and the answer was at least a year. Well, it
turned out to be 3 years!
Jill is a fantastic trainer and took it slowly, never pushing
Laura too much. She achieved her Schutzhund title on May
5, 2012 and it was one of the highlights of my life! She has
since gone on to get a CD and won the UDC National in
2013, both shows from the Veterans Class. Laura is 8 years
old, in perfect health and is still wanting to go.
QQ You must also be very proud of Laura and all she and
Jill Graves have accomplished. And she produced a very
nice litter for you, all champion if I remember correctly.
Can you tell us about the litter?
It was indeed a beautiful litter...all champions! That
was my first all-champion litter. Laura, the dam and Blaze,
aka GCh Steinway’s Paris is Burning were a wonderful
match. Temperaments are outstanding! This litter is now 5
years old and we have 3 ROMs with 2 more close. Several
have multiple titles in obedience, rally and agility. I have
wonderful homes for all of them: Dee and Chuck Knighten
in Chico, CA., Patty Larsen in Colorado, Charles and Pam
Chapman in Houston.

QQ What does the future hold for you?

QQ One more question. Just for fun, tell us something few
people know about you.
You know, I have worked harder on this question than
any of the others. I can’t think of anything...I guess my life
is an open book. I tell everything!

A Trip to OZ
Judging the Queensland Dobermann Club Show

It was a whirlwind trip from the beginning. In late May, with a long hot
summer and not many plans looming
ahead, an email arrived from Michael
Yates, President of the Queensland
Dobermann Club. What a lovely surprise, an invitation to judge! Whoa –
had to read it again, it is for July – this
July! Like, in three months! Seems
another judge had to cancel and they
needed someone soon. Yikes!
Visiting Australia has been my
dream trip for years, my reply was
“absolutely yes” and I’d work out the
details later. Especially since I had
met Michael and several of the other
Queensland Dobe people at previous
DPCA nationals and friends Sue Pfuhl
and Ian Smith had visited in Denver
after the Fitchburg National. I knew this
would be a fun assignment!
The devil is in the details, as they
say. So along with all the judging
approvals and sending them information, I had to arrange time off work,
boarding for Mr. Fletcher, stop mail,
etc.
Since this was my “dream trip’ I
was absolutely taking some extra days
to see as much as possible as a tourist. Remembering that my good friend
Johnnah Davis had told me once how
she loved to travel and she had wanted
to go to Argentina with me a couple of
years ago, I asked her if she would like
to go and we would have a blast. Her
answer was yes and she had a million
details to work out, but they all did and
soon enough we had our week in Australia all reserved and planned.
We both would have loved more
time, but work and other commitments, not to mention financial limitations, gave us only a week so we made
the most of it.
After weeks of phone calls and
emails of “OMG, we are going to AUSTRALIA!” Not to mention the completely unseemly jumping about, hugging each other and squealing “We’re
going to Australia!” every time we saw
each other, soon enough we were on
our way.
We will include some photos,
however it should be noted that we
took literally hundreds of pictures, yes
hundreds. The bus driver from the car
park, each other, our luggage, the airplanes……not to mention the periodic
grabbing each other, jumping up and
down, and chanting, “We are going to
Australia!”
Finally underway, the flight from
Denver to L.A. was quick and uneventful. That was pretty much the last
uneventful part of the journey. We
had six hours at LAX to change planes,
which seemed like a long time. With
the decidedly unfriendly and unhelpful
United employees “help” we wandered about trying to get from the
United domestic terminal to our International Quantas flight.
Eventually, we were rescued and
given correct directions by a very nice
security guard. Not long before board-
ing, we were informed of a delay and
ended up leaving LAX an hour late.
Now, mind you, Brisbane is about 15
hours from L.A. and it was already
some 10+ hours since we left home.
Too excited to sleep, we talked and
watched movies for a few hours. About
half way to Brisbane, somewhere
above the middle of the Pacific Ocean,
we were informed that we must reroute
and stop in Honolulu due to a very ill
passenger. This turned into five hours
in Honolulu, at about 3:00 a.m. local
time and we were not allowed off the
plane. Since the plane had to reroute
with another landing and take off, it
had to refuel. Boy was that fun. Five
hours in Hawaii and we didn’t get to
see anything or even call Skip and
Hiroko due to the timing.
Underway once more, we slept,
watched movies and had breakfast
before finally landing in Brisbane six
hours late. This blew a whole day of
sightseeing.
Bless Ian Smith – he was waiting for us after customs and off we
went on our adventure in OZ. As we
were staying with Sue and Ian, first we
went back to their house exclaiming
at the kangaroo and koala bear crossing signs, getting used to being on the
“other” side of the road and generally
taking in all the sights possible. At
home, Sue was sitting “puppy watch”
with her Champion bitch, Piper. After
various calls to the vet, Sue ended up
taking Piper in for a C-section where
she had one fat black bitch puppy.

Meanwhile, Joannah and I relaxed,
got cleaned up, and moved into our
room. Ian showed us around the
house, kennels and pasture. Soon Sue
returned with Piper and the new baby.
Then Ian took Joannah and me out to
eat with Michael Yates and his wife at a
wonderful Chinese place. We brought
take away back for Sue. Needless to
say, we slept well that night!
First full day in OZ, we spent the
day at the Australia Zoo. The zoo made
famous by the crocodile hunter, Steve
Irwin and his family. This is the cleanest and nicest zoo I have ever been
to with the most well informed, well
spoken, and well dressed staff.
The zoo is in a beautiful setting
with lots of shade, benches and interactive displays. There were a number
of animals out with their keepers walking around in different areas. We took
a train ride which goes around the
entire zoo as sort of a break, a chance
to sit, but still see some things. It went
between the main exhibit areas so
you could ride and get off at any of
the many stops. Our first stop was the
Stadium Show. It was phenomenal!
The huge crocodile was so impressive
– a virtual dinosaur. From my “trainers” viewpoint the most incredible was
the birds. They use all positive training
and have scores of different native
birds trained to circle the stadium and
then land in specific places around
the seating area or in the arena. Then
they would circle and return out the
stadium door. There were also trained
bird acts with audience participation
that were lots of fun.
Next we walked around the many
exhibits and into the fabulous “field of
kangaroos” where we walked among
many red and grey kangaroos and wallabies. We were allowed to feed and
pet them. They are most fascinating
creatures. I liked the grey kangaroos
the best, they are the more chunky of
the two. I could go on and on about
all the animals. We petted camels
and wombats and got to hold a baby
koala. They are just so soft and they do
cuddle. Their noses are sort of velvet
soft like horse noses.

Dinner after was at a superb seafood place with outdoor tables right
on the water. Joannah had her chance
to eat bugs. I enjoyed my steak. We
had learned by this time that they have
excellent wine in Australia!
Next day was Saturday, the
Queensland club’s WAE. Happily it
was held right in Sue and Ian’s pasture,
so we did not have to rise before the
sun or drive anywhere. The pasture
was perfect for the WAE. Because
most of the dogs were owner handled
and entered the next day, I had to
sit a little bit away from the test and
crowd to avoid the “appearance of
impropriety.” Thanks to my wonderful hosts, I had a comfortable chair in
the shade and it was quite pleasant.
Joannah helped the club by shaking
the can all day. The test was correctly
set up and very well run with 20 plus
dogs and perfect weather. Interesting
to note, most of the dogs reacted typically, compared to what we see on the
first three tests and the umbrella. Most
dogs showed a fairly high degree of
sound sensitivity to the gunshots. Not
a single dog had an issue with the footing, acting as if it was not there. The
threat saw most of the dogs unwilling
to confront and in the end only three
dogs passed.
This club knows how to have a
good time with an event. The WAE
was preceded by a cookout breakfast,
with egg, cheese, bacon and tomato
sandwiches grilled up by Michael.
After the WAE we visited the
show site to check out my ring for the
next day and see some of the many
specialties. The GSDs and Rottweilers are shown German style with
double handling, lots of running on a
track and trading handlers on the run.
They are quite a sight. All the Rotts we
saw were undocked.
The show grounds were beautiful. They are owned by the kennel
club in a large park like setting with
lots of trees for shade. The rings were
large and absolutely level with the
most beautiful green grass that was so
short you could see the dog’s feet and
toenails, yet even in the rain, it never
got slick, never got torn up or soft, and
looked great from the beginning to the
end of the show.
Dog show travel is very different
than in the USA. Dogs are not allowed
in hotels or motels at all. Travel to
shows usually consists of either a larger vehicle or a car with a dog trailer.
There are very few big motor homes.
Almost everyone camps out at the dog
show with a variety of tents and camping gear. The show grounds have restrooms, showers, water, electricity, lots
of shade, and areas with picnic tables
and outdoor grills. There is a main
building where smaller indoor rings
can be held in really bad weather. That
building has a concession stand. There
are even fenced fields onsite for events
like herding and lure coursing.
Sunday was the Specialty show, so
I had to stay away from ringside until
the last minute. It did rain fairly hard
all during dog judging, but it did not
faze any of the dogs or handlers. Fortunately, it was not cold, just wet. The
ring stewards in OZ will spoil judges
for AKC shows. The steward literally
does everything. All the judge has to
do is judge and dictate critiques into a
small recorder. Between judging dogs
and bitches, the club had a wonderful

at ringside. The overall quality of the
dogs and their presentation was very
good. I was quite pleased with my
winners in each category. Of course,
all dogs are uncropped and about half
the entry had undocked tails. There
was a variety of shapes, sets and carriage of tails.
After judging was complete, we
had a nice rap session, which despite
the rain and long day was well attended and we had some good discussion.
After the rap session, we had a chance
to check out the show vendors and
then out to dinner with some of the
dog show crowd.

Monday I was up before the sun
and on the road to the dock for our
boat trip to Tangalooma Island. The
boat to the island was a beautiful fast
craft with a real luxury interior. The
half hour trip seemed like minutes. The
Tangalooma Island resort is just gorgeous. We walked around the resort
and along the beach, visited the gift
shop then relaxed for a while in the
VIP lounge for day guests, like us.
Then it was time to board the whale
watching boat. We hustled and got
great seats. Then listened to the introduction and headed off to the open
ocean. There is something primitive
and inspiring about being on the open
ocean without any land in sight, just
endless water and sky. Soon enough
we spotted a whale spout on the horizon and off we went to see a small
pod of humpbacks which we followed
for a time. We then changed directions when we spotted a pair that we
watched for quite a while. As it neared
time to return, we were rewarded with
the sighting of a female humpback
with a young calf. Our guide was even
excited. It was very early for a calf and
we were not just fortunate to see them,
but they stayed with us very close to
the boat for a good 15 minutes.
Returning to the resort we relaxed
and had a drink in the lounge until
it was time to attend the information
meeting for the wild dolphin feeding.
Walking on pristine white sand
into the clear blue ocean at dusk, there
were 10 – 12 beautiful dolphins looking forward to their free fish. Since
these are wild bottlenose dolphins, a
protected species, no one is allowed
to touch them, just give them the
fish. The resort is careful to limit the
amount of fish once a day so they don’t
become dependent. What a magical
experience. The dolphins were quite
polite, swimming up and waiting in
front of you to take the fish quite delicately in their long snouts. The one I
fed took his fish, bumped my leg, and
rolled on his side to look at me before
taking his second fish. The intelligence of these creatures just shines
through. It was awesome.
All too soon it was time to take
the boat back to the mainland. Watch-
ing the lights on the other boats and
shore as we approached was a lovely
sight. When we arrived back at the
house, Sue had a delicious supper and
wine waiting and we shared our experiences with her, admired Piper and
her growing puppy and hit the sack.
Exhaustion kept us from being up
at dawn; however, we still got a fairly
early start. Sue’s daughter was able to
come over and watch Piper and her
puppy so we got a day with Sue, and
Ian got a well deserved rest. Our day
began with driving to the famed Gold
Coast, enjoying the gorgeous scenery,
ocean views and perfect weather. It
doesn’t get much better than three
women on a road trip without any
real agenda. We stopped at the seaside town of Byron Bay, aka Surfer’s
Paradise, and did some shopping. Then
on the way home we had the greatest lunch at a meat pie shop called
“Satispie”. I want the franchise in the
USA! We had to buy extra to have for
breakfast before leaving. Joannah and I
now dream of steak pies with mashed
potatoes and mushy peas! We arrived
back just in time to get dressed and
ready for the “Outback Spectacular.”
It is a sort of combination of dinner theatre, historical play, movie and
rodeo. What an absolutely fantastic
show! Although hard to describe, it is
a phenomenal idea and performance
with a fabulous authentic Australian
dinner and drinks. It was the perfect
end of the perfect trip. Upon arriving back “home” to Sue and Ian’s, we
were delighted to see a wild wallaby
in the yard, then we stood out in the
perfect, clear night and looked up to
see the Southern Cross, bright and
shining. From the woods we heard an
owl. Since the trip had to end, it was a
perfect end.
What a trip! What a privilege to
have such friends and be invited to
judge their wonderful Dobermans. I
felt like the luckiest person in the
world. As Joannah said, I smiled so
much, my cheeks hurt!

cardiologist at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital.  He received his veterinary degree from the
University of Liverpool, England and completed an Internship in Small Animal Medicine &
Surgery and a Residency in Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Sammarco
served as a lecturer and assistant clinical professor at the University of Pennsylvania before
transitioning to private practice.  Dr. Sammarco has 10 years of extensive experience using

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
This picture of Tess Hensler brings back a lot of great
memories. Al Martin (late)and I left the Berks County show
and went over to Tess’s home (I was one of the select few
who did not have to call before coming over.) Tess was
home with her neice from Westfield, NJ. Tess was failing
badly. Al picked her up and carried her to another bed in
a room. She could barely talk but she was glad to see both
of us. Two days later she passed away in her sleep. She
was special to me because she taught me how to handle in
her yard and spent countless hours talking about the breed
and comparing their structure to the horses on the adjacent
farm. She allowed me to write and article about her for Top
Dobe Magazine.
