young school. It was formed in 2010 following the amalgamation
of two antecedent Schools the ‘School of Psychology’ and
‘School of Social Work and Social Policy’, which themselves date
to the establishment of the University of South Australia in 1992.
In this brief time the School has achieved an outstanding research
profile for its youth and size. This reflects the exceptional calibre

This is a deserved endorsement of our dedicated, researchproductive staff throughout the School and other staff and the
research degree students who directly or indirectly support our
research efforts.
This report is a celebration of the research activity produced by
the School of Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy at the
University of South Australia. It showcases the nature and scope
of our research interests and achievements. Staff are members
of research institutes and centres within the University of South
Australia including the Hawke Research Institute, Centre for
Sleep Research, Centre for Applied Psychological Research, Research Centre for Gender Studies and the Social Policy Research
Group.
The report summarises the main research activities of our staff
and higher degree research students for 2012.
Specifically, it
provides information about our publications, grants, conference
presentations, research supervision (PhD, Masters, Honours) and
research administration.
The School of Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy has
been in a state of growth over recent years which is reflected in
new staff appointments and PhD student enrolments and
completions. We currently have 68 PhD and 2 Masters by Research students enrolled within our School.
These students play a vital role in building research capacity and
a vibrant research culture.
In 2012 our staff were listed as chief investigators on 3 NHMRC
grants, 16 ARC Grants, 14 other externally funded grants, and
many other research consultancies. Moreover, we produced in
excess of 80 peer-reviewed publications.

RESEARCH EDUCATION
Research Education
Our dynamic and stimulating research environment greatly
benefits students wanting to explore contemporary social issues
and solutions. Our research informs the content of our
undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs and where
possible our students are given the opportunity to work on
research activities, collaborating in multidisciplinary teams with
industry, government and the professions.
Research Programs:
Honours
Master by Research
The Research Centre for Gender Studies fosters excellence and
creativity in research and postgraduate training on gender by
bringing together the research interests and teaching expertise of
university members across nine disciplines. Research areas
include:

Gender, work and economy

Gender and education

Gender and cultural studies

Gender and violence

PhD (Psychology)
Research Centres
The School of Psychology, Social Work and Social Policy hosts
two of the University's research centres.
The Centre for Sleep Research is a world leader in the field.
Funded by UniSA as well as government and industry support,
the Centre extends our understanding and perception of human
performance, sleep and behaviour. It is the largest dedicated
sleep research facility in Australia and features a state-of-the-art
laboratory.
The Centre for Applied Psychological Research conducts high
quality research to elucidate and promote well-being, quality of life
and effective functioning in individuals and organisations in the
community. The Centre is also involved in looking at strategies to
deal effectively with social and psychological problems.
Research Groups
School researchers are also involved in the following groups:
The Social Policy Research Group focuses on issues of social
justice and social policy, the impact of economic and welfare
reform on disadvantaged groups in the community, inequality and
social exclusion. Research areas include:

Poverty, homelessness and social inequality

Community capacity building and development

Human services work
The Centre for Peace, Conflict and Mediation studies all types of
conflict and promotes conflict transformation, mediation, dispute
resolution and peace building. Research areas include:


CENTRE FOR APPLIED PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH
The Centre for Applied Psychological Research (CAPR) is
committed to a research agenda that provides evidence about the
importance of balance between workplace productivity and
psychological health and safety. Our research concentrates on
psychological risks and psychological safety at work, stress,
bullying and harassment and social exclusion from work.

The research we conduct aims to be of value in dealing with
social exclusion, stress, distress, life changes, anger and a range
of problem behaviours. We aim to develop the highest quality
applied social and psychological research to benefit the family,
community and industry.
We approach our research from a number of angles:

identifying psychosocial risk and risk groups

evaluating interventions, actions and campaigns

informing prevention policies and practices

setting priorities for policies and interventions

benchmarking at a national and international level

monitoring changing trends, legislation and new developments

supporting research on specific topics

developing national standards

forecasting emerging risks

CAPR has established national monitoring of psychosocial risk
factors at work within Australia and influenced the design of surveillance systems internationally. Initially, the CAPR team published an international overview of national surveillance of workplace psychosocial hazards (Dollard, Skinner, Tuckey and Bailey,
2007). Since then, the Norwegian National Institute of Occupational Health followed the review paper’s recommendations when
setting up the national surveillance system in Norway and the
recommendations were also featured in the 2010 World Health
Organization overview of the health impact of psychosocial hazards at work. Importantly, surveillance of psychosocial working
conditions in Australia has also been established n line with the
review guidelines through the Australian Workplace Barometer
(AWB). Previously no comprehensive data were available. Using
the AWB tool, data have been collected from over 4,200 Australians. The AWB received funding and support through an ARC
Discovery grant, an ARC Linkage grant and from SafeWork SA.

COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE LABORATORY
The cognitive neuroscience laboratory investigates the relationships between the brain, behaviour and cognition. We share skills
in electroencephalography and transcranial doppler recording and
apply these physiological measures of brain activity to investigate
questions about the nature of cognition in health and in a range of
clinical conditions.
We also provide practical guidance to organisations, employers,
