Deer Lakes’ Jaros Named Finalist for
NASC National Middle Level Advisor of the Year
The National Association of Student Councils (NASC) has
announced that Deer Lakes’ Middle School guidance counselor and
student council advisor Jackie Jaros has been named the NASC
Region 2 Middle Level Advisor of the Year and is that she is now a
finalist for the 2015 NASC Warren E. Shull National Middle Level
Advisor of the Year Award.
In November, Jaros was honored by the Pennsylvania
Association of Student Councils (PASC) as the state’s Middle Level
Advisor of the Year during its 78th annual state conference in
Altoona. In addition to Pennsylvania, Region 2 is comprised of the
Mid-Atlantic states of Delaware, New Jersey, New York and
Maryland.
Jaros, a 1988 Deer Lakes alumna, has served in the PASC for the
past 14 years and currently holds a seat on the state board of directors. Under her direction, Deer Lakes has hosted two middle level
regional conferences. Jaros co-founded the program at Deer Lakes
in 2000 along with her mentor and former colleague Amy Faith.
Rose Ann M. Fulena, the Executive Director of the PASC, noted
Jaros’ passion, dedication, loyalty, determination and empathy when
recommending her for the
statewide organization’s top
honor. Fulena also recommended Jaros for the national
award. She said that Jackie
Jaros is an advisor who puts
countless hours, and her entire
heart, into student leadership
development.
Jaros’ current group of students are heavily involved in
the Hats for Haiti program as
part of the Team Tassy initiative. In 2016, Jaros will help
spearhead Deer Lakes’ hosting
of the PASC state conference. Jackie Jaros
The NASC will announce all
of its national award winners during its annual conference, June 2628, 2015 at Rio Rancho High School in Albuquerque, NM. Thank you . . .We couldn’t have done it without you!

Learn CPR— Free Class Scheduled
Sadly, 70% of Americans may feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they do not know how to administer CPR
or are hesitant to act. West Deer EMS wants to work to lower those
statistics.
Why learn CPR? Four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home.
Statistically speaking, the life you save by administering CPR is
likely to be someone you know: a child, a spouse, a parent, or a
friend. You can prepare yourself to act in an emergency by attending a community CPR class. Friends & Family CPR Anytime is for
anyone who wants to learn basic CPR skills, choking relief, and
AED awareness, and doesn't need a course completion card to meet
a job requirement.
As part of the Staying Well Together community awareness program, West Deer EMS is offering community CPR classes every
third Saturday from 10am to 12pm at the EMS base on E. Union
Road. The next class is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2015. For
further information, please contact Donna Kovac, training coordinator, at 724-265-3033 or 724-321-2039. You can also email her at

6th Grade Basketball Team Wins Hempfield Classic
Members of the 6th grade basketball team include (top row) Colton
Spence, Austin Mravintz, Coach Don Colton, Paul Zalus, Ronan
Renter, Zack Herbster, and Devin Murray. Bottom row Michael
Sullivan, Ryan Rodgers, Andrew Sullivan, and A.J. Pagone.
On Sunday, March 14, 2015, the Deer Lakes Youth Basketball
(DLYB) Sixth Grade Travel Team completed their three year adventure defeating three highly competitive AAU teams to prevail as the
CHAMPIONS of the ASE Hempfield Classic Tournament. This win
marked the end of an incredible era for an amazing youth basketball
team and their coach. The team ended their regular season play with an eleven game
winning streak and an 18-9 record overall. This core team, under the
direction of Don Colton, played as “one” to win more than sixty (60)
games and multiple tournaments in their three-year existence. Many
thanks go to Coach Don for his time and devotion to developing these
players both on and off the court. The players on this team will
always remember their experiences together over the last three years
as some head their separate ways in middle school. BKY Financial, Inc.

It is with pleasure that Deer Lakes Middle School teacher Mrs.

titled: “Juliette Gordon Low: Founder of Girl Scouts.” For this
project, they connected the NHD theme of “Leadership & Legacy”
with the influence of Girl Scouts in women of all walks of life. The
girls communicated with some “famous” Girl Scouts including former United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former First

Students have been working on their projects since
September. The process involves selecting a topic that connects
to the theme, researching the topic by using primary and secondary
sources, analyzing and interpreting the topic, writing a process
paper, writing an annotated bibliography, creating an exhibit to
show at NHD, and presenting their work before the contest’s judges.
Mrs. McQueen who along with colleagues Mrs. Jenn Mann and
Mrs. Sue Fink, helped guide the students through their respective
ventures.
The girls will head to the state competition at Millersville
University, Millersville, PA on Tuesday, May 12th.
