April, 2015 ©2015 Our 23rd Year of Providing Good News and Community Information Vol. 23 • No. 3 Deer Lakes’ Jaros Named Finalist for NASC National Middle Level Advisor of the Year The National Association of Student Councils (NASC) has announced that Deer Lakes’ Middle School guidance counselor and student council advisor Jackie Jaros has been named the NASC Region 2 Middle Level Advisor of the Year and is that she is now a finalist for the 2015 NASC Warren E. Shull National Middle Level Advisor of the Year Award. In November, Jaros was honored by the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils (PASC) as the state’s Middle Level Advisor of the Year during its 78th annual state conference in Altoona. In addition to Pennsylvania, Region 2 is comprised of the Mid-Atlantic states of Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Maryland. Jaros, a 1988 Deer Lakes alumna, has served in the PASC for the past 14 years and currently holds a seat on the state board of directors. Under her direction, Deer Lakes has hosted two middle level regional conferences. Jaros co-founded the program at Deer Lakes in 2000 along with her mentor and former colleague Amy Faith. Rose Ann M. Fulena, the Executive Director of the PASC, noted Jaros’ passion, dedication, loyalty, determination and empathy when recommending her for the statewide organization’s top honor. Fulena also recommended Jaros for the national award. She said that Jackie Jaros is an advisor who puts countless hours, and her entire heart, into student leadership development. Jaros’ current group of students are heavily involved in the Hats for Haiti program as part of the Team Tassy initiative. In 2016, Jaros will help spearhead Deer Lakes’ hosting of the PASC state conference. Jackie Jaros The NASC will announce all of its national award winners during its annual conference, June 2628, 2015 at Rio Rancho High School in Albuquerque, NM. Learn CPR— Free Class Scheduled Sadly, 70% of Americans may feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they do not know how to administer CPR or are hesitant to act. West Deer EMS wants to work to lower those statistics. Why learn CPR? Four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home. Statistically speaking, the life you save by administering CPR is likely to be someone you know: a child, a spouse, a parent, or a friend. You can prepare yourself to act in an emergency by attending a community CPR class. Friends & Family CPR Anytime is for anyone who wants to learn basic CPR skills, choking relief, and AED awareness, and doesn't need a course completion card to meet a job requirement. As part of the Staying Well Together community awareness program, West Deer EMS is offering community CPR classes every third Saturday from 10am to 12pm at the EMS base on E. Union Road. The next class is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2015. For further information, please contact Donna Kovac, training coordinator, at 724-265-3033 or 724-321-2039. They have also misrepresented their prices but more disturbingly, OUR prices. We strongly suggest that before you sign any contract with any private or religious cemetery, that you contact your family funeral director to determine if you have been told the TRUTH. Any reputable cemetery will welcome this inquiry. This win marked the end of an incredible era for an amazing youth basketball team and their coach. The team ended their regular season play with an eleven game winning streak and an 18-9 record overall. This core team, under the direction of Don Colton, played as “one” to win more than sixty (60) games and multiple tournaments in their three-year existence. Many thanks go to Coach Don for his time and devotion to developing these players both on and off the court.
