Knowledge is Power 3 Use NIXLE to Stay Informed The most vital component required in order to effectively plan for, respond to and recover from an emergency incident is information. This is the single commodity that allows emergency services personnel to establish and maintain what is known as a “common operating picture” – that awareness of an incident that enables those in charge to ensure the safety of responders as well as the successful resolution of the incident. Emergency managers are not alone in their need for accurate incident information, however. Ordinary citizens are almost always the first to see, and often respond to, emergencies. They are also the ones directly impacted by these incidents. As such, it is important that they receive incident-related information in a timely and accurate manner. In fact, the emergency operations plans of most municipalities address the need to provide information to the public prior to, during and after an incident occurs. One of the ways that both North Huntingdon Township and Irwin Borough are Article provided by Gene Komondor, Emergency Management Coordinator able to provide information to its residents is with a communications application known for North Huntingdon Township as Nixle. This web-based product allows for real-time communications and can be used in both emergency and non-emergency situations. In fact, the majority of messages sent are related to non life-threatening incidents such as road closures, utility repairs and weather alerts. The system would also be used in the event of a localized or large-scale disaster such as a tornado or flooding. Combined with other social media applications such as Facebook and Twitter, Nixle enhances the ability of North Huntingdon and Irwin to keep their residents informed of events occurring in their respective municipalities. Nixle is a free application that is available to everyone. To sign up to receive information alerts, simply go to the Nixle website at www.nixle.com to register. Alerts can be sent to your e-mail and mobile devices as well as to desktop computers.
