This award winning Reality Tour takes parents and their children ages 10 and up, for a ‘walk in the life’ of a teen addict to show the harm that could come from experimenting with drugs and alcohol. The powerful consequence segment features brief dramatic scenes narrated by the ‘teen addict’ and are followed by training on skills that families can implement to prevent substance abuse. First person accounts by law enforcement and persons in recovery wrap up the evening program. Details about the concept are at www.RealityTour.org. The Norwin Lion’s Club has been working with the non-profit CANDLE, Inc. that oversees Reality Tours nationally since 2011 to explore opening a site in the North Huntingdon area. The original site at the Westmoreland County Courthouse, started in 2007, will continue to host the program monthly as well. The courthouse site has been booked months in advance, even after adding a second tour date. Reality Tour started in Butler County in 2003 and it is now replicated in 25% of Pennsylvania counties and ten other states. It is an evidence-based program and is listed on the National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs. Research which was conducted in 2008 by the University of Pittsburgh under a grant from the Staunton Farm Foundation. To increase capacity, CANDLE received a grant from the Westmoreland Now and Forever Fund of The Community Foundation of Westmoreland County and North Huntingdon was selected as the area to develop. The North Huntingdon program started in September 2012 and JB’s Bright Beginnings Children Center has graciously donated the use of their facility to the Norwin Lion’s Club. Several members of the Norwin Lion’s Club were already volunteering or advocating for Reality Tour so, “It seemed a natural fit,” according to club member and Norwin Reality Tour Director, Gina Davis. “This is a very real problem in our area and we need to stand up together to make a difference.” “Our first tour was held on Tuesday, September 11, 2013 and every second Tuesday of the month after. The Norwin Reality Tour is completely run by volunteers. We are reaching out to the community for assistance. We are in need of volunteers, both adults and teens for the many parts involved in running the tour”, states Gina. If you are interested in finding out more about the program or in volunteering please contact Gina at [email protected]. James M. O nce again it’s that time of year when we are doing our fall chores and maintenance before the winter hits. Electrical maintenance may not be one of those things you consider with everything else we need to do. Now is a great time to have your electrical system inspected for efficiency, dependability and most important for SAFETY. Keep in mind a lot of the older homes were not wired to accommodate all of the new appliances used today (microwaves, computers, coffee pots, toasters, space heaters, air conditioners, etc.). You would be surprised how many home and business owners just plug that space heater in without knowing if their existing electrical panel can handle the load – or if the plug is even grounded. An over fused circuit can result in an electrical fire. We work very hard during the holidays to make our homes bright and welcoming for friends, family and celebrations. With 30% of annual home fires occurring during the holiday season, electrical safety is something that should not be overlooked amidst all the excitement. Here are some holiday electrical tips to keep in mind during this time of year: (1) Before setting holiday lights indoors, check for frayed wires and broken bulbs, and replace strands that are faulty. Replace any lights that start flickering. (2) Don’t plug too many lights into one outlet at the same time. Three is the max you should aim for. (3) Always unplug indoor and outdoor lights before leaving the house or going to bed. (4)Outdoor extension cords should only be used outdoors and indoor ones for inside decorations. Outdoor cords should be plugged into GFCI outlets only. (5) NEVER staple or nail through your cords. (6) If you have a real Christmas tree, don’t forget to add water, daily if necessary, to prevent light bulbs from causing the tree to catch fire. (7) Use safety caps on all electrical outlets to prevent young children from inserting objects that could shock them or start fires. The best time to catch and fix a problem is before it becomes a huge problem. Here, at Banks Electric we value safety first. Please call a professional electrician for an electrical system inspection.
