On Birthdays, Carrie Mae Peel Williams had her 95th in October and Geneva Peele Gibson has
her 90th this month. Did you send cards?
We had several communications from cousins. Diane Peel Walls sends us news on her mother
Jerry Peel, she will be 85 in February. Please send her a get-well card at the address shown in the
write-up below. Carolyn Heipe also sends us a Peel Family reunion picture and letter.
This quarterly does not have a Feature Article, but it has several Short Stories. Carlise Peel
Moncrief submitted the first of these, honoring her father Clarence “Ribs” Peel. My Brother
Marvin sends in an observation on the “Number 17” and how it has played into his life. Cousin
Kelsie Peele Temples tells of “Fond Memories” of her grandparents, my Uncle Money. Keep
those short stories coming!

Have you sent a card to our seniors lately?
I received email from Diane Peel Walls about her mother Jerry Peel, whose picture and address
are above. Jerry fell on Nov 2nd and broke her right hip just two weeks after getting over cancer
surgery. The following is from Diane.
Today (Tuesday, Dec. 7) they transferred mom to Walton Rehab Hospital in Augusta, which is
an intensive rehabilitation hospital. She'll be getting 3 to 4 hours of rehab a day and should be
home by the end of the year. She did have gout in her foot and it is getting better. She has stood
on her feet one or two times successfully, for which we are very happy. It is now up to the
Rehab facility to get her into a wheel chair and walker. If you want to send a card to her, which
she loves to get, send it to 724 Greene Street Apt 615, Augusta, GA 30901. This is her address.
We check it often and get her mail to her. Since we don't know how long she'll be at Walton
Rehab, it's better to send any mail to her home address.
My Aunt, Jean Peel Kelley, plans to stay with her when she goes home until she is on her feet.
Aunt Jean is my dad's sister. Of course, we're taking it one day at a time. She is progressing so
well, but she has so far to go.
Thank the Lord the infection has cleared up and they removed the pic line today. Praise the Lord
for that. She's still having some problems with her bladder, but this continues due to her bladder
cancer, probably. Thank you again for your continued prayer support.

Letter from Carolyn Heipe
Dear Horace,
I am enclosing $10.00 for the coming year. Thank you for your hard work.
My husband (Edwin Heipe) died the 5th of Oct, at the age of 88 – heart problems. My sister,
Donna Davis & I went to Gainesville, FL October 23rd to the Peel reunion. We celebrated our
Aunt Carrie Mae Peel Williams 95th Birthday. She up and about. She and Patricia Peel Arick
are sisters to our mother, Sarah Peel Gray, who died in 1990 at age 72 from melanoma.
I am enclosing a picture of remaining children of John Franklin Peel and Lillian Nelson Peel,
taken at the reunion. Sorry Uncle Jerome is not in full view. [They had] eight children – three
(3) are deceased - my Mother Sarah, Uncle Herbert, and Aunt Irma.
I’m glad you had a good trip to Europe. I lived in Stuttgart & Karlsrule, Germany, from 19621965. Have a Good Year!

The following article was sent in by Carlise Peel Moncrief of Americus, Georgia. It is a
wonderful testament to the love and admiration that she and her siblings had for their father and
mother. It was previously published in the Georgia Post Centennial Edition 2010.
Caboose Dedication Acknowledges the part the
railroad Played in the Establishment of Roberta.
The Caboose which sits downtown Roberta (Georgia)
on the square is being dedicated To The Memory Of
Clarence Moseley Peel.
Peel was a railroad
conductor, a former resident of Roberta and an
employee of Southern railroad. His daughters are
Claire Peel Mattox of Roberta, GA., and Carlise Peel
Moncrief of Americus, GA.

feet, four inches and always slim from all the walking
he did, they said you could see his ribs, hence the

REFLECTIONS OF THE LIFE OF CLARENCE MOSELEY PEEL
Clarence Peel was only 17 years old when he wanted to volunteer for service during World War
I. His mother already had one son serving on foreign soil and refused his request to sign for him
to volunteer.
Desiring to start a career with the railway, he approached her again requesting her to sign for him
to begin work. She thought it far too dangerous but at his urging, she relented and signed. He
was intrigued with the operations of the railroad system. He realized the important part it played
in getting supplies and materials to the business industry, especially during WWI and WWII.
He was supremely dedicated to his job. He never wanted to work elsewhere and believed the
railroad administrators would always support and protect the railroad men. He had worked for
38 years and was only two years from retirement when he died in a train accident. He had
strived to maintain an impeccable work record and never brought harm to others. He kept that
record and never lost it.
During the depression, many railroad men were without work. Not wanting to leave Roberta,
Clarence helped build the old school gymnasium and later worked as a Deputy Sheriff. He was a
member of Roberta Baptist Church, The Woodmen Of The World, and The Masonic Lodge.
He was the son of James Buchanan Peel and Leila Jane Bond Peel of Atlanta. He was a
descendent of Lawrence Peelle, who was born in England and was the first Peele to come to

America in 1621. Clarence was the grandson of Robert Austin Peel and Martha A. E. Swanson
of LaGrange and Andrew Jackson Bond and T. Frances Tucker of Dewey Rose, Elbert County,
GA.
On September 30, 1926, Clarence married Jessie J. Blackwell of Roberta. She was the daughter
of Willis Thomas Blackwell and J. Elizabeth Hooks of Roberta. She was a descendent of
Pilgrim Edward Doty. Willis was the owner and operator of a sawmill at the “Pope Place” in
Hammett settlement. He supplied hardwood for Brumby Chair Company of Atlanta. Clarence
and Jessie were the parents of five daughters, Betty Jane, Claudine, Juanita, Carlise, and Claire.
All of the people of Roberta were important to mother and daddy. He brought his train through
carefully to ensure the safety of anyone near the crossing. When he blew his train whistle, the
people waved to all the crew and they responded with a wave. I never hear a train whistle
without thinking of him.

Peel family members will be in Roberta for the Dedication of the Caboose and plaques flanking
it. We remember well the wonderful people who lived here and look forward to seeing their
family and friends. The “Keep Roberta/Crawford Beautiful Organization”, along with my sister
Claire Mattox and other committee members have worked long and hard to make this happen. It
will be a source of education and pride when completed.

(Note from Carlise on December 6: I went to Roberta today and checked on the caboose. It has
been painted red and all the black has been painted. I have some quilts I want to loan them and
we have a lantern, conductor’s hat, etc., to place in the caboose. This means so much to us.)

HISTORY OF THE NUMBER 17
The high school in Hamlet, NC had 12 grades in the early 1940’s. After my 11th grade I had 17
credits. I only needed 12th grade English to graduate so I went to summer school for 6 weeks. I
was still 17 years old because I started to school when I was 7 years old. When the class of 1943
graduated, my mother received my diploma. I had been in the US Army for a month.
In March 2008, my wife Mattie and I flew to San Antonio, Texas, to see my brother Horace
Peele. The next day, we spent all day on the River Walk in town and had no problems. The next
morning, I went with Horace to his golf course. We were probably the first ones there. He was
given cart #17. We were back home before lunch. Trish and Mattie started out to Horace’s
garden to get some lettuce. They had to go down eight steps. Mattie doesn’t remember but at
the bottom she fell flat on her face. It didn’t take long to get her to the hospital, probably about
17 minutes. She was put into room #17, then others. She was in the hospital 5 days and received
a pacemaker. Later at a restaurant, we sat at table #17.
During WWII, I served 23 months in the Army in the Pacific, including travel from San
Francisco, CA to Oahu Hawaii, to Maui Hawaii, to Oahu Hawaii, to Saipan, to Tinian, to Saipan,
to Oahu Hawaii, to Saipan, to Okinawa, to Leyte Island, Philippines, to San Pedro, CA (part of
Los Angeles). My diary shows this travel time to be 6 months. This means my land time was 17
months. After returning from Saipan to Oahu Hawaii on September 17, 1944, I went to
Schofield Barracks to the Motor School. For our service in the invasion of Saipan and Tinian,
my US Army 534th Amphibian Tractor Battalion received the NAVAL PRESIDENTIAL UNIT
CITATION. From California, I rode a train to Ft. Bragg, NC, and was discharged on January 17,
1946. My time served in the United States was 9 months and 11 days.
On our recent bus trip to Virginia Beach, VA, we took a 2 hour boat tour of Norfolk, VA harbor.
At pier #17, there was a ship named San Antonio. On the way home, we stopped at a large outlet
mall in Williamsburg, VA. Our bus parked behind store #17.
For history record, the second atomic bomb was dropped on August 9, 1945, on my 21st
birthday, 3 days after we left Okinawa. The peace treaty with Japan was signed on September 2,
1945, which was the 17th birthday of my future wife Mattie Smith. We have been married for
61 years on June 11, 2010. Now we have tickets to a Christmas show on December 17 with
country music legend Jimmy Fortune, who was a member of the Statler Brothers. Their first
recorded song was “The Wreck of Old Ninety-Seven”. (Composed by Marvin B. Peele, Jr. on

FOND MEMORIES OF MY GRANDPARENTS
Merritt “Money” Peele, Sr., and Sallie Pearson Peele
50TH Wedding Anniversary
When I was a child the fondest memories I have of my Grandma and Grandpa are that when we
would go visit them, Grandma Sallie would give us kids a hot homemade biscuit with a hole in
the top and pour molasses into it and we would eat, boy was that a good biscuit. After eating and
hugging them we would go under their house, which was high off the ground and play ‘doodle
bug, doodle bug, your house is on fire’, or play hop scotch out in another part of the yard, while
the grownups visited in the house. Then a day or so after Halloween we would bring Grandpa all
of our peppermint candy out of our Halloween bag. We kids didn’t like peppermint, but

Scotland Co., NC. [Merritt was my father’s brother, he was called “Uncle Money”, I do not
know why but I do know that Aunt Sallie made the best biscuits!]

The obituaries that I put into Lawrence, Etc., are generally just random obituaries that I find or
someone sends to me. If you have one in your family, please send it to me. These are distant
cousins of mine.
Mr. Lloyd Thomas “Sonny” Peele, Jr., age 84, died at the Roanoke
Chowan Hospital on Saturday, September 4, 2010. Mr. Peele was born in
Bertie County; however, he made his home in Ahoskie. He was married to
Alma Outlaw in 1947 and to this marriage was born three children. He
was a member of the Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church in
Aulander. In early years, Mr. Peele owned and operated Peele Plumbing
and later became a long distance truck driver, which he did for many years
until retirement. He enjoyed woodworking and many referred to him as
Sonny Peele
Mr. Fix It.
Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Evelyn Cook Peele and Lloyd Thomas Peele,
Sr. Survivors include his wife, Alma Outlaw Peele of the home; two daughters, Evelyn P. Smith
and her husband, Lee, of Harrisburg, NC and Terri P. White and her husband, Stewart, of Rock
Hill, SC; one son, Bennett Peele and his wife, Jeanette, of Conway, NC; one sister, Jerri Wilkins
and her husband, Donnie, of Winchester, VA; and one half sister, Joan Brown and her husband,
Felton, of Mebane, NC. Surviving are five grandchildren, Kenneth Willoughby, Stephanie
Thomas, Kelly Vann, Lindsey and Kelsey White; and four step grandchildren, Erica Slaughter,
Ethan Bryant, Brad Smith and Amber Waters. Also surviving are nine great grandchildren;
Dakota and Thorne Willoughby, Brandon, Blake, Hailey and Taylor Thomas, Dalton and
Dawson Vann and Jackson Winburn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at the
Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church in Aulander with the Rev. Taylor Latham officiating.
The interment will follow at the Job Cemetery in Aulander. The family will receive friends on
Tuesday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church, PO Box
416, Aulander, NC 27805. Sykes Funeral Service of Rich Square is handling the arrangements.

Florence Murray "Betty" Peele May, 87, passed away Monday, Sept.
27, 2010, at the Brian Center in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at 6 p.m. from
the chapel of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. A private
graveside service will be held at Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro.

of Raleigh, Kenneth May and wife, Diane, of Smithfield, Thomas May and wife, Brenda, of
Black Creek and James May and companion, Richard Tice of Oxford; two daughters, Susan
Raper and husband, Shorty, of Pikeville and Peggy Uzzell and husband, David, of Goldsboro; 10
grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. The family will receive
friends Wednesday evening immediately follow the service at Shackleford-Howell Funeral
Home, and other times at 202 W. Main St. in Fremont.

Mrs. Virginia Hornaday Peele of Laurel Hill passed away on Monday,
May 17, 2010 at the age of 86.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at the
Richard Boles Funeral Service Chapel officiated by the Rev. Kyle
Wyckoff and the Rev. Craig Davis. Burial will follow the service at
Pinecrest Cemetery.
Virginia Peele
Mrs. Peele was born July 24, 1923 in Marlboro County, S.C., daughter of
the late Earl Hornaday and Lola Hill Hornaday. She was the beloved wife of 43 years to the late
Edward Harris Peele. She was a homemaker and a textile worker, retiring from Waverly Mills
after 50 years of dedicated service. Virginia will be remembered as a loving and devoted
mother, grandmother and sister.
She is survived by her four sons, Billy Earl Howell, Tony Wayne Peele and wife Peggy, Robert
Eugene Peele and wife Brenda, and Mitchell Edward Peele and wife Katherine all of Laurel Hill;
two brothers, Charles Hornaday and wife Anni’ of California and Ernest Hornaday and wife
Helen of Hamlet; nine grandchildren, Gene Peele, Tonya Peele, Randall Mounce, Randy Howell,
Andy Howell, Lori Ann Howell, Billy Gene Howell, Tim Peele and Terri Smith; 17 greatgrandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren.

Col. Herschel David Peel, 88, of Lakeway, TX, are at 1:00 p.m., Friday,
December 3, 2010, at the Chapel of Clark Funeral Home, Cairo, GA. Rev.
Johnny Burdick will officiate and interment will be in Millville, FL. Ret.
Col. Peel passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2010, in Lakeway, TX.
Ret. Col. Peel was born on February 2, 1922 in Panama City, FL to the late
Daniel Franklin Peel and Minnie McCoy Peel. After college graduation,
he served his country in the United States Air Force and retired at a
Colonel with over 24 years of service.

He was an avid golfer and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors included: grandchildren, Mary
Michelle Young of Bristow, VA, Michael David Peel of Austin, TX; great-grandchildren, John
David Young, Charles Edward Young, Thomas Andrew Young, all of Bristow, VA; sister,
Winnie P. Harrison of Whigham, GA; ex wife, Dortha Jean Peel of Austin, TX. Ret. Col. Peel
was preceded in death by: his parents, Daniel Franklin and Minnie Peel; his son, Charles David
Peel; and sisters, Louise Minter and Evelyn Harding; and aunt, Lucille McCoy.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. on the day of the funeral service

Doris Peele Pickels, 64 of Laurinburg, died suddenly Friday, Nov. 19, at Scotland Memorial
Hospital. A graveside service took place Monday, Nov. 22, at Hillside Memorial Park. She is
survived by her son, Keith Pickels of Laurinburg; her daughter, Tracy Sheppard of Washington;
her brother, Dennie Peele of Washington state; her sister, Jane Callahan of Laurinburg; and her
granddaughter, Samantha Sheppard of Washington. Born July 14, 1946 in Richmond County,
she was a daughter of the late Woodrow and Velna Peele and widow of the late Wayne Pickels.
Doris was a retired assistant Scotland County Register of Deeds for 22 years. (Published in the

15 Mar 1674 Robert Peelle (1635) was appointed overseer of the estate and executor of the
will of General Richard Bennett of Nansemond County, VA. The will was
probated in England on August 3, 1676. (Genealogical Gleanings In England,

12 Apr 1675 James Jossey and Robert Peelle were executors for the will of Governor
Richard Bennett as it was probated on this date in Nansemond County, VA. The

women frends in Elizabeth Belson's howse aforesaid on ye eaight day of the forth
