STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK
BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY
2016 CAMPUS STATEMENT
Binghamton University (University) opened in 1946 as Triple Cities College in Endicott in response to a growing demand for higher education as soldiers returned from World War II.
In 1950, the institution was incorporated into SUNY and grew quickly on the strength of its liberal arts program. In 1954, a 387-acre site in Vestal, N.Y. was purchased from a local
farmer and the college officially relocated to Vestal in 1961. In 1965, the college was selected as one of the four university centers within SUNY and renamed the State University of
New York at Binghamton. Binghamton University's main campus is now located on 930 acres, with a 190-acre Nature Preserve and over 120 buildings and special purpose
structures. The University Downtown Center and the Innovative Technologies Complex (ITC), comprised of the Biotechnology, Engineering and Science, and Center of Excellence
buildings showcase the University's commitment to the community and research.
Growth and change are enduring themes as Binghamton University moves into the 21st century. The University began with Harpur College of Arts and Sciences and now includes
six other academic colleges and schools: the Graduate School of Education, the College of Community and Public Affairs, the School of Management, the Decker School of Nursing,
the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
To achieve the University's mission, and in accordance with the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Program, the University has moved forward with an increase in undergraduate
enrollment to about 13,500 and graduate enrollment to approximately 3,500 students. This growth trajectory would not have been possible without the space growth and
improvements that were achieved through the five-year Capital Plan process that allowed the University to prioritize and stage critically important expansion and renovation projects.
To keep pace, in the last year, almost 8,500 square feet of academic space has been added to the campus and just over 182,000 square feet of space has been renovated.
Renovation of the Lecture Hall Student Wing was completed in 2016. The project addressed critical maintenance issues by providing new electrical, fire alarm and HVAC systems
along with new windows. Twenty new classrooms were created on the first and second floors. Lounge areas and break out rooms were included to enhance the facility. Renovation
of Old Champlain was completed and Harpur Advising offices moved into the facility in January 2016. Work is underway and an addition will also be constructed at Old Champlain to
create space for a Globalization and Korean Center. This facility will consolidate departments serving international students which are now spread in various locations across
campus. A project to upgrade the Central Heating Plant is progressing. Two new electrical rooms, a new control room and interior office alterations are included in the work. The
bucket elevator used to transport solid fuel will be replaced along with the chutes and hoppers. A new pollution control stack will be built. Work is scheduled to be complete in 2017.
Renovations to Old Digman will wrap up in August 2016, returning the facility to residential use so that phased renovations can take place in older residential halls. The first of those
efforts, a project to renovate Cayuga Hall, is underway and will be complete in 2017. Several projects to improve pedestrian safety and circulation were completed in 2015 and 2016.
The projects added speed tables and landscape areas to direct pedestrians in a safer manner and reduce pedestrian/vehicle conflicts. An addition to the University Union
MarketPlace will be complete in summer 2016 and will add indoor and outdoor space to a much used, student-centered facility.
Campus research efforts continue to be improved through projects taking place on several fronts. Construction of the Smart Energy Research and Development Building is
continuing with work focused on the building fit out. Construction will be finished in summer 2017. A parallel project upgraded voltage to the ITC site and re-located the main access
road to ITC. Construction is underway for the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Demolition of buildings on the site was accomplished in early 2016 and work on the
new building foundation and associated site work is underway. Staff is working with Pharmacy research hires on equipment and building needs for the planned opening in 2018. An
adjacent property at 48 Corliss has been acquired and planning is underway with the Decker School of Nursing which will be re-located there. Initial clean up and securing of the
building has taken place and design work has been initiated. Construction is well underway on the Southern Tier Incubator where interior work is progressing. The project will be
complete in 2017.
Critical maintenance issue are being addressed in several projects. Sections of sanitary sewer line are being replaced in summer 2016 and there are also repairs to Science 2
windows, Science 1 plumbing, replacement of the roof and cooling tower at the Biotechnology Building, HVAC replacements for Fine Arts and the Administration Building.
