The Unimog
More power for fighting forest fires and disaster intervention
The Unimog concept
Getting through where others give up
Where even four-wheel drive trucks reach their limits and tractors can’t go any further,
a totally different kind of work and tractor vehicle has to take over: the Unimog. It gives a
new definition of versatility and viability on four wheels. The Mercedes-Benz Unimog is
a vehicle in a league of its own. It provides solutions which no other vehicle worldwide can
offer. The Unimog is much more versatile than any other with its attachment and mounting
areas at the front, middle and rear. It is also much more at home on off-road terrain than
any other vehicle, and can drive at fast speeds on roads as a transporter. The Unimog is an
uncompromising professional for uncompromising professionals. It is streets ahead in
every situation and on any terrain, such as for fighting forest fires and disaster intervention.

Helps when nothing else can
The Unimog knows what intervention teams need. Thus,
when it comes to innovative technical features it has the
edge on any equivalent vehicle. This applies to the especially
compact Unimog U 20, and all the more to the outstandingly
versatile Unimog U 300/U 400/U 500 and the highly mobile
Unimog U 4000/U 5000. What the last two model ranges
in particular have in common is their excellent performance
over any kind of terrain. Numerous individual details contri
bute to this: innovative frame designs, single tyres, portal
axles, a tyre pressure control system and state-of-the-art
Euro 5 engines and transmission technology.
4
Dynamic. The Unimog U 4000/U 5000. Exceptional off-road
manoeuvrability for the most difficult jobs and special heat
protection ex factory – this is what the Unimog U 4000/
U 5000 stands for. The flexible ladder-type frame with tubular cross members guarantees tremendous rigidity on the
road – and extreme torsional flexibility off-road. The double
three-point mounting for bodies and attachments allows the
frame to twist in off-road conditions without exerting addi
tional stress and strain on the mounted bodies and attachments. The optional heat protection equipment specifically
developed for fire departments affords optimum operational
safety and complies with class S3 of the European firefighting standard EN 1846 for cross-country vehicles.
Versatile. The Unimog U 300/U 400/U 500. For jobs
requiring maximum flexibility, the Unimog U 300/U 400/
U 500 fits the bill perfectly. A compact and professional offroad implement carrier perfectly designed for a whole variety
of purposes. With four body and implement attachment
areas, standardised implement interfaces and drives and a
heavy-duty mechanical front PTO – all perfectly coordinated.
In addition, the comfortable cab provides great freedom of
movement for a crew of up to three, as well as a fantastic view
of all traffic and working areas – thanks to its high seating
position and large front windscreen and side windows.
Compact. The Unimog U 20. With its short wheelbase
the U 20 is especially manoeuvrable – its turning circle
is only 12.6 m. And with an overall height of just 2.7 m
and a vehicle width of only 2.15 m, it comes through
almost everywhere. Permanent all-wheel drive, portal
axles and coil springs ensure maximum traction, outstanding ground clearance and greatest possible stability.
The U 20 is outstandingly well suited for all-year use as
a universal implement carrier – even in touch-and-go
operations off paved roads.

Chassis expertise
Whether muddy forest humus or scree, thanks to its chassis expertise, you always arrive at your
destination with the Unimog. Not to be found with any other manufacturer worldwide, its chassis
concept brings a totally new dimension to your operating strength. Unusual ground clearance,
favourable angles of approach and departure, highest stability, extreme climbing ability, excellent
traction and a top speed of up to 90 km/h on paved roads. Nothing could be more mobile.

Tyre pressure control system. Another advantage for
off-road operation with the Unimog: the optionally availa
ble tyre pressure control system Tirecontrol. While on
the move it is possible to adjust the tyre pressure to the
ground, in one or both axles. Easily and quickly, at the
push of a button. Reducing the tyre pressure enlarges
the tyre contact patch, prevents sinking into soft ground
and improves traction. This goes easier on the soil, saves
fuel and also distinctly increases the life of the tyres.
3
Portal axles. Thanks to portal axles, the Unimog’s axle
tubes and differentials are higher than the centre of the
wheel. The effect? They provide unusually high ground
clearance and can easily drive over obstacles of up to
50 cm. In addition, the location of the axle by longitudinal
control arms with integrated stabilisers gives the Unimog
great directional stability and a r educed tendency to roll
and pitch.
Four-wheel drive. Traction is everything – Unimog offers
an all-wheel-drive concept which is without compare. The
technical principle: Portal axles ensure excellent ground
clearance off-road. Coilsprung axle suspension plus thrust
tube technology ensure optimum ground contact and protect the propeller shafts from obstacles. Engageable diffe
rential locks in both axles guarantee minimum slippage
and maximum traction. Typical Unimog!

Transporting crews
The crewcab for the U 4000/U 5000 provides everything to make a hot operation as comfortable and safe
as possible for both driver and crew. As many as seven
persons can be comfortably accommodated. The Unimog
with crewcab also offers generous stowage space for
tools, protective equipment or personal belongings of the
occupants, as well as maximum headroom and legroom.
8
Ideal for task forces and crews. The Unimog U 4000/
U 5000 in the special version with a crewcab has space for
up to seven persons. Combined with maximum legroom
and headroom, even with helmets on. Also, four air-sprung
individual seats are an available option. Generous storage
space is available under the fold-down rear bench with its
three large compartments. Tools, protective equipment,
and the crew’s personal belongings are easily stowed away
to be kept safely, but at the same time always to hand.
Other storage compartments are to be found in the central
console and in the pockets of the front doors. The wide
opening angle of the rear doors allows passengers to get in
and out easily, even in touch-and-go situations. On request,
the crewcab is also available in a tilt-forward version. One
other advantage of the crewcab: the additional second roof
hatch at the back.
Greatest possible flexibility on the job. The round roof
hatch (as an option) of the Unimog cab makes the crew’s
job safer, as it allows them to fight the fire directly from
the safety of the vehicle. The second bench at the rear of
the cab is simply folded back, providing everybody with
a safe area to stand in.
Your advantages at a glance:
•Low-vibration three-point mounting for the cab
•Optional high-roofed crewcab with four doors
and four or seven seats
•Plenty of headroom even when wearing helmets
•Easy to climb in behind the front axle
•Plenty of storage space for equipment and
protective clothing
•Round roof hatch for fighting fires from within
the vehicle

More safety ex factory. The Mercedes-Benz heat protection system for the Unimog U 4000/U 5000 comprises a
protective package specifically developed for fire departments. With it the Unimog meets the requirements of
the European firefighting standard EN 1846, class S3 for
cross-country vehicles. The features already are taken into
account in the development and production of the vehicles,
tested and approved – a one-stop service without sub
sequent modifications to the vehicle. The Mercedes-Benz
heat protection involves the sheathing of all lines relevant
to vehicle operation. In addition, all important units and
technical components of the Unimog U 4000/U 5000 are
mechanically protected.
1.A steel shell protects the AdBlue® tank and catalytic
converter from damage from outside.
a dvantage, the new position gives body manufacturers
more leeway when designing the body.
2.The air dryer is shielded by a steel casing. In addition,
its arrangement gives it special protection against external
influences.
4.The battery is protected in a steel casing from heat and
mechanical damage from outside.
3.All the brake components are also mechanically
protected. They are arranged so that with a permanently
mounted body they are easier to access. The brake relay
valve has been given a metal casing instead of the standard
synthetic casing. The rear air chambers have been moved
from the frame supports to under the brake unit supports
and are protected by a metal casing. As an additional
5.All lines crucial to the functioning of the vehicle – electric
cables, pneumatic and hydraulic pipes and hoses, fuel lines –
are either made of high-grade steel or provided with special
fireproof sheathing.

The Unimog fighting forest fires
For weeks now, not one drop of rain has fallen. A single spark will suffice
to threaten a whole region with a flaming inferno. Now every second
counts. The professional firefighters must get to the point of trouble as
fast as possible. But it’s often kilometres away. Bad road surfaces, dif
ficult terrain, large forest areas, deep snow – with the Unimog you operate
successfully in extreme terrain. Thanks to its unsurpassed dynamics and
excellent off-road capabilities, it is the ideal first intervention vehicle in
regions seriously threatened by fire. An added Unimog plus for o perations
right at the source of the fire: unrivalled equipment options for the most
varied requirements. From the system for self-protection against heat
radiation to the 6,000 l water tank.
Fighting forest fires
13
Germany. The EU Commission has assigned Europe’s
highest forest fire alert level to Brandenburg. The German
state with its extensive pine forests is thus classed on the
same risk level as South France, Corsica, South Spain and
Portugal. Reason enough to put together specialised firefighting units and equip them with a tank water tender for
fighting forest fires, the TLF 20/50 “Brandenburg” built
on the basis of the Unimog U 5000 with its i ncredible offroad capabilities. Among other things the vehicles carry
5,000 litres of water for firefighting, are outfitted with rapid
intervention equipment, a folding water cannon on the
roof, and the Unimog heat protection system fitted at the
factory in Wörth. This system meets not only the requirements of the European standard EN 1846, but even exceeds
those of the French XPS 61-518 standard. In addition, the
Brandenburg Unimog has a few more special features: the
double three-point mounting for the body permits taking
optimal advantage of the extreme torsional flexibility of
the Unimog chassis with its axle articulation of as much as
30 degrees. Almost taken for granted now: the tyre pressure control system Tirecontrol – a great help on the sandy
ground typical of Brandenburg because it effectively prevents the heavy vehicle from sinking into the soil.
France. The more than 150,000 km2 of forest lying between Corsica, Côte d’Azur, Provence and Bordeaux are
a constant source of danger for man and beast. Forest
fires are a constant threat here, particularly in the densely
populated tourist areas along the coast. Over 1,000 Unimog
are used in the French firefighting service. The most
popular is the Unimog U 5000. A perfect intervention
partner for firefighting on the front line with a tank
capacity of 6,000 l – or with 4,000 l tank and crewcab for
up to seven firefighters. A common characteristic of the
Unimog vehicles at work in South-West France is that
they are all designed as fire-resistant firefighting trucks.
14
This means that the vehicles are equipped above and
eyond the prescribed heat protection and compulsory
b
self-protection system for all French forest firefighting
trucks, enabling them even to drive through fire. Also, the
Unimog is equipped with a practical roof hatch allowing
the firefighter to extinguish fires without leaving the cab.
Spain and Portugal. There are 250 Unimog vehicles in
the firefighting service on the Iberian peninsula. As a
crew carrier with crewcab or as a patrol vehicle. Mountains, forests, long distances: when fighting fires the
Unimog’s off-road qualities can be exploited to the full.
Many fire departments also treasure the Unimog U 400
or Unimog U 500 for winter services; as a rescue vehicle
during catastrophes or for technical support. Its legendary life span, dense service network and rapid 24-hour
spare part supply make the Unimog the first choice for
intervention teams in Spain and Portugal.
Italy. For over 30 years, Unimog has been working closely
with renowned body manufacturers in Italy. Equally
impressive is its portfolio of vehicles used for forest firefighting. Thanks to its compact dimensions and good
value for money, the Unimog U 20 already does service
in several regions of Italy, with tank capacities up to
2,200 l. In operation also are: the Unimog U 300 with a
tank capacity of 1,500 l, the U 400 with 2,400 l and the
U 500 with 5,700 l, all fitted with up to three hose reels
and a high-pressure water pump (240 l/min at 60 bar).
In addition, the Unimog U 4000 with its interchangeable
drop side body or winter service equipment and a tank
volume of 2,400 l and the Unimog U 5000 with a maximum tank capacity of up to 5,000 l have proved effective.
Three different models ranges with one big advantage
in common: all forest firefighting attachments can be
exchanged in just 15 minutes – and then the Unimog is
ready to take on a completely different kind of work.
For example dealing with oil or cleaning up the street
after an accident. This is where flexibility is essential.
Fighting forest fires
15
Cyprus. The extensive forests around the Troodos mountain
range and the limestone mountain range along the north
coast are important nature reserves and favourite tourist
destinations, but hot dry summers and strong winds make
the region extremely prone to forest fires. These conditions
also make it the ideal place for the Unimog U 500 – thanks
to its superb off-road characteristics, its high payload
and its equipment perfectly tailored to various operating
conditions. For example: the Unimog with floor jets –
used either to protect the Unimog itself or to fight grass
and ground fires.
Croatia. The vegetation along Croatia’s almost 2,000-km-long
coast is seriously threatened by forest fires in the summer.
A great danger for the area’s main source of income – tourism
– and plenty of work for the fire department. Their job: to
detect fires early, get to the source of the fires quickly, stop
them spreading and then extinguish them. To get to often
inaccessible places safely requires vehicles with maximum
off-road capabilities. That is why many Unimog from all three
model ranges are to be found in service throughout Croatia.
On the one hand, straightforward forest firefighting vehicles
with a pump and large water tank. On the other hand, Unimog
vehicles equipped with a wide selection of bodies and imple-
ments to make them versatile enough to cope with a wide
range of operating conditions all-year-round. Vehicles like
the Unimog U 20 and U 500. Owing to its particularly compact
dimensions and manoeuvrability, the Unimog U 20 proves its
value every time, not only fighting forest and surface fires, but
also on assignments in the narrow streets of Croatian towns.
And the Unimog U 500, equipped with a tank for 2,700 or
3,800 l water and 200 l foam with a combined normal and highpressure pump. For maximum extinguishing effect with minimum use of water and foaming agent the U 500 with 2,700 l
water use the CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System) technology
that injects compressed air into the foam and water mixture.
Fighting forest fires
17
Czech Republic. Whether in winter, when the snow in the
Sudeten Mountains often lies metres high, or during the
dry summer months. In the Czech Republic the extremely
competent off-road Unimog is always in its element as
a powerful firefighting vehicle. As for instance, in the
Trutnov Fire Department with a region covering around
1,200 km2 of vast forests, remote villages and even
remoter farms, and hardly any paved roads. It is here
that the Unimog U 5000 gets the chance to demonstrate
its top performance with a cab for a crew of seven, high
payload, unbeatable four-wheel drive and high ground
clearance. The tank has a capacity of 3,000 l water and
400 l foam, plus a pump that delivers 40 bar at 250 l/min
18
high pressure and 8 bar at 2,400 l/min low pressure.
The backrests of the rear seats are fitted with special
breathing apparatus while an electric self-recovery
winch is fitted at the front of the vehicle. The overall
weight of this Unimog U 5000 is 14.1 tonnes. Not a gram
too much for the Trutnov Fire Department commander.
He is delighted with his fleet’s “flagship” and its off-road
capabilities. The body is designed to make the Unimog
U 5000 a real all-rounder which can be used effectively
during the whole year, even in urban areas, as well as
for fighting forest fires.
The Baltic States. The timber industry is of extreme
importance in the Baltic States. It is an important
source of income for the aspiring national economy but
is a c hallenge with drawbacks. The forest regions are
extensive and sparsely populated, and the roads rarely
have paved surfaces. Additionally, access is frequently
blocked by small rivers or streams. The fire departments
are therefore quite certain about one thing: for this kind
of country the Unimog, with its outstanding off-road
skills, is the best vehicle for their firefighting operations.
Thanks to its fording depth of up to 1.20 m, for instance,
or to its tyre pressure control system. It also guarantees
the best traction on the often sandy soil of the Baltic States.
The Unimog for
disaster intervention
When every second counts, the Unimog can use its potential
to the full, because it can do much more than any other
vehicle. Uncompromising and reliable technology turns it into
a universal tool, which rescuers in crisis regions all round
the world would not like to do without. With its fording depth
of up to 1.20 m the Unimog makes good headway even on
flooded roads.
20
Fire, floods or earthquakes in inaccessible regions,
accidents in tunnels or on rails – sometimes the most
difficult obstacle is getting to the trapped people. The
Unimog, however, can overcome any hindrance. As a
road-railer for salvaging railway rolling stock, as a specialised tunnel rescue vehicle, or as fast intervention
vehicle with hydraulic interfaces for rescue equipment.
And, of course, as an off-road first-aid ambulance with
up to four stretchers.
Nature shows its destructive side more and more often.
Tonnes of snow, mud and rocks block roads and isolate
communities from the rest of the world. With its uncom
promising four-wheel drive, high-performance engines
and versatile implement attachments, the Unimog quickly
clears the way for technical support vehicles, doctors or
fire departments to follow. The specially designed clearing
and cleaning implements can be quickly attached – from
snow cutters and snow ploughs to sweeping and spraying
systems. From the first minute to the last – the Unimog is
indispensable.
Always ready for action. The threshold between crisis
and disaster can be razor-thin. In order to master the one
and to prevent the other, you need a tight-knit team of
man and machine. For decades the Unimog has been at the
front line. Whether earthquakes, forest fires, tidal waves
or whirlwinds, the work is similar: to protect, rescue,
salvage, supply, evacuate and clean up. Fire departments,
police, technical support and aid organisations all depend
on the Unimog’s great reliability, off-road capabilities and
versatility. Day after day. All over the world.
In a crisis, every second counts. The right equipment
needs to get to the disaster area fast and safely. And this
is where the Unimog is right in its element. Take floods,
for instance, with its fording capability up to a depth of
1.20 m. Or negotiating sodden embankments with the tyre
pressure control system, which increases the tyre contact
area, thus protecting the sensitive crown of the dyke. The
Unimog is thus able to take its support team safely to the
crisis zone, supply the population as a transporter with all
the essentials as well as to act as a travelling workshop or
mobile headquarters.

Low or enlarged – it’s your choice. The low overall height
of the standard driver’s cab is optimal for passing under
low structures. The optional enlarged cab offers still more
stowage space and freedom of movement. The seat adjustment is even more individual. The cab floor is flat throughout, ensuring free through-cab access.
Clear to read, easy to operate. The Unimog instrument
panel is firmly installed on the steering column, making
it really easy to read irrespective of the driver’s position.
Backlit dials and two LCD multifunction displays provide
all the important information. All the operating controls
are installed on the centre console and the displays for
the transmission and operating implements are fitted in
logical clusters, easy to reach and easy to understand.
