AREVA CHALLENGE’S CONCEPT
CONCEPT
AREVA Challenge is carrying the colors for the French Team during the 32nd America’s Cup to be
held in Valencia, Spain in 2006 and 2007.
The team came into being in 2002 when entrepreneurs Ortwin and Stephane Kandler met Dawn
Riley, a member of the team that won the 1992 America's Cup.
The Kandler have first-hand knowledge of French and foreign challengers through their company, KYachting, and have analyzed attempts to win the Cup since the early 90s. This helped them identify
key success factors and earned them recognition for expertise in putting together the human and
technical resources needed to compete in this world-class race.
Baptized AREVA Challenge in April 2006, the syndicate has formed a team of well-known players
who have proven their worth in the America’s Cup, in the business world, and in project
management. All of the participants are united in this adventure by a sense of team spirit,
pragmatism and discipline.
THEY HAVE SAID ABOUT AREVA CHALLENGE… (ex(ex-K-Challenge)
ERNESTO BERTARELLI, President of Alinghi:
“K-Challenge really showed above average capabilities. I would qualify the performance of K-Challenge in
2005, with all the difficulties they had, above the fleet. They belong to the top group. With a larger budget, they
will be able to compete with some of the more established teams like Luna Rossa, Emirates Team New
Zealand, and BMW Oracle Racing. I do not exclude K-Challenge from the top if they can find the necessary
budget. They really showed what they can do.”
CHRIS DICKSON, CEO BMW Oracle Racing:
"We did some training with K-Challenge before the regatta started. They have a very good boat in light winds.
They showed that they could sail very well. Next year, when they have their new boat, we will expect to see a
clear progression of their performance. There is a long way to go and even though they have one of the oldest
boats in the fleet, they have been sailing very well."

TESTIMONIALS
ORTWIN KANDLER, Strategic Adviser of AREVA Challenge
“I’m very proud and honored that the young people have finally taken up the torch by jumping into this very
impressive challenge, which has no equivalent: a story on water, on land and in the air. This adventure will be
undertaken with all of their nerve and technological awareness, as we did with Airbus in the 1960s, showing the
world that the greatest civil aeronautical challenge was within our reach, thanks to our perseverance, faith and
conviction though we met skepticism all around us. The team spirit and its know-how overcame everything and
today we know the results: we are the winner!”
STEPHANE KANDLER, CEO of AREVA Challenge
“The America’s Cup is a mythical trophy: it’s the oldest sport’s trophy in the world, but also the one that the
sailing world dreams of. Moreover, this event is beyond the sailing world: in the America’s Cup, technology,
team spirit, passion and a glamour touch motivate a public that becomes larger each time. After several
successful experiences in the top sailing events with K-Yachting, we are now ready to lead this challenge to
victory and secure its place in France!”
DAWN RILEY, General Manager of AREVA Challenge and Pit Assist
“The America’s Cup is the most complex, technically advanced and interesting event in the sport of sailing. It
requires complete teamwork, dedication, and focus. All of this combines to create the mystique and public
interest. This makes the Cup a great opportunity for sponsors not only for the media impressions but also for
internal team building and messaging. The Areva Challenge team will be a unique team crossing over national
borders and gender lines using the variety of backgrounds and talents to create a winning team.”
JACQUES-EMMANUEL SAULNIER, Senior Vice President, Communications and
Spokesman of the Areva group
“The America's Cup is one of the world's major sporting events and presents an exceptional opportunity for a
group such as ours. We are very happy to be involved in the world of sailing once again.”

AREVA CHALLENGE EN BREF…
BREF…
•
AREVA Challenge is the French Challenger for the 32nd America’s Cup, which will take place in
Valencia, Spain in 2007.
•
This team was born in 2002, before the 31st edition had even started, between two business men
Ortwin Kandler and Stephane Kandler, and an experienced America’s Cup sailor: Dawn Riley.
•
Our motto : “to start early, to go far”
•
AREVA Challenge relies on K-Yachting’s 15 years experience in sailing competitions. K-Yachting
has supported and sailed with many French America’s Cup sailors for 10 years (Thierry
Peponnet, Bertrand Pace, Lionel Pean, Bertrand de Broc, etc).

THE AMERICA’S CUP: 154 YEARS OF HISTORY!
The first America's Cup took place in 1851, between
British and American fleets. The American team won,
and Queen Victoria was very disappointed as she first
thought the English took second place. But, she was
answered that there was no second place, and only a
winner. The famous "100 Guinea Cup" would never
come back to its country of origin, so it was christened
as "America's Cup" in reference to the victory of the
yacht "America". Until the 60's, the America's Cup
was mainly a British-American fight where the most
famous people of the world challenged each other. Sir
Thomas Lipton, tried to win the "Cup" 5 times in 31
years, but never did! Then the time of Australian
challengers came. It took them 20 years to succeed in
being the first non-Americans to win the trophy, which
they did in 1983, in front of 500 million TV viewers.
More than a sport’s trophy, the America's Cup is a
myth. The “Cup” has created so much passion,
investment, obstinacy and human fight in order to feel
the glory of winning the "Grail". Engraving one’s name
on the trophy offers the winner recognition and
absolute respect, giving him the opportunity to be part
of the legend. We must add the national support that
participating in this event creates, as solidarity and
national pride can show, like when the New
Zealanders with Peter Blake kept the Americans of
team "Young America" from winning in 1995. The
Swiss team Alinghi won the America’s Cup in 2003,
but the symbol of this achievement is even stronger,
as it is the first time the trophy came back to Europe,
its continent of origin, but also the first time in the
America's Cup history that 5 continents will be
represented.

THE AREVA CHALLENGE’S
CHALLENGE’S SPONSORS
Title Sponsor
April 5, 2006 : AREVA becomes title sponsor of the French team for the
2007 America’s Cup
AREVA has decided to sponsor K-CHALLENGE in the 32nd America’s
Cup which will be held in Valencia, Spain during the summer of 2007.
The boat and its team are now known as the AREVA Challenge.
Already a partner of the French challenger in New Zealand in 2003, AREVA is proud to rejoin the
competition. In doing so, the group will enrich the experience it gained during the previous
competition and will benefit, once again, in terms of internal and external communications.
The sponsorship will increase awareness of the AREVA brand in France and abroad and sees the
group associated with a competition whose values are in line with its own: technological innovation,
team spirit and the development of CO2 free energies.
For group employees, this is a unique opportunity to rally around an attractive and status-enhancing
project.
Jacques-Emmanuel Saulnier, Senior Vice President, Communications and AREVA Spokesperson,
said "The America’s Cup is one of the world’s major sporting events and presents an exceptional
opportunity for a group such as ours. We are very happy to be involved in the world of sailing once
again.“
Stephane Kandler, General Manager of K-Challenge, said "AREVA is a major international champion
in its field. Its contribution to the America's Cup and prior experience will enable us to embark on this
sporting adventure together with a view to achieving one of the best performances in this legendary
international competition."
About AREVA
With manufacturing facilities in 40 countries and a sales network in more than 100, AREVA offers
customers reliable technological solutions for CO2-free power generation and electricity transmission
and distribution. We are the world leader in nuclear power and the only company to cover all
industrial activities in this field. Our 58,000 employees are committed to continuous improvement on
a daily basis, making sustainable development the focal point of the group’s industrial strategy.
AREVA’s businesses help meet the 21st century’s greatest challenges: making energy available to
all, protecting the planet, and acting responsibly towards future generations. www.areva.com

Official Supplier
GANDIA: this Spanish city, which is 80km south of Valencia,
officially joined the team as Official Supplier until 2007.
GANDIA is part of la Safor district, in the “Comunitat Valenciana”, and has a privileged location,
between the sea and the mountains. Its environment shows a rich historical inheritance, which is part
of its monuments and people’s spirit. This is one of the greatest asset of the city for the tourism
(regarding infrastructures and variety of possibilities), and can satisfy all demanding visitors.
GANDIA is taking up the challenge to welcome an America’s Cup team, as the city is just about an
hour sailing from the race course of the 32nd America’s Cup : the Valencia Bay.
José Manuel Orengo, Mayor of Gandia, introduces the reasons why he chose to trust K-Challenge:
“Gandia, the port of which forms part of the Valencia Port Authority, could not let this extraordinary
and historical opportunity pass by and for that reason all of our efforts have been aimed at including
the city in the celebrations of the 2007 America’s Cup.
In our opinion, the fact that the K-Challenge has decided to install its base in our city represents a
magnificent opportunity for our tourist industry in general and nautical tourism in particular.
It is also a splendid opportunity to further promote the quality of our product, of our brand name as a
tourist destination and to expand our horizons.
I would like to thank Mr. Kandler and all the members of the K-Challenge team for having chosen
Gandia as their base for the next three years. I can assure that our city will do everything within its
power to make them feel at home and to help them win the ‘challenge’.
I wish them every success and I pledge that Gandia will make every effort to help them obtain their
objective. ”
The city of GANDIA became an Official Supplier for K-Challenge, which will be able to use all the
necessary equipments and infrastructures for the installation of its training base from 2004.

Château Tourril is an AOC ("Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée" Minervois) of approximately 33 acres (13 hectares).
The vineyard is located in the south of France, close to the Canal du Midi at Roubia between
Lézignan and Narbonne (Mediterranean Coast) on the soil of Minervois. Almost all the grapes are
hand picked to obtain the most mature and fullest fruit possible. The cellars utilize stainless steel
tanks that are equipped with automatic temperature gauges. These gauges closely monitor the wine
to allow for the production of various types and vintages. The red, rosé, and white wines produced so
far are very pleasant and easy to drink for all occasions. www.letourril.com

Official Supplier
AIGLE, the outdoor and leisure wear specialist, was the first
sponsor to join K-Challenge.
“The AIGLE company successfully caters for outdoor sports enthusiasts who want to pit themselves
against the elements and sporting challenges and offers an extensive ultra-performance line
reserved for sailing enthusiasts: deep sea sailing or sports regattas.”
America’s Cup is the most prestigious sailing competition ever, and above all, it is a human story
between men when looking at the past editions. This is the beginning of a new story between KChallenge and AIGLE.
Yves Mouriès, AIGLE’s CEO, explains the reasons that have convinced them to become a sponsor
for K-Challenge:
“The America’s Cup is back in Europe, we wanted AIGLE to be part of it. We waited until the Louis
Vuitton Act I in Marseille and then we noticed the motivation and how serious the K-Challenge
organization was, we decided then to become their sponsor.”
Recognized by the public as the outdoor and leisure wear specialist, there is a strong link with the KChallenge philosophy: a team opened to capabilities coming from everywhere, a multicultural
philosophy shared by all the K-Challenge team members, and part of the team’s key values.
AIGLE is a Licensed Supplier for K-Challenge, and takes advantage of the exclusivity for the “sports
clothing and shoes” category. AIGLE will supply exclusively the K-Challenge team members (clothes
and shoes, for sailing – Actimum collection – and on shore). www.aigle.com

THE SUPPORTERS
The French Sailing Federation gives K-Challenge the official label of French
Team for the 32nd America’s Cup, as well as the rights bound to this title.
“The 32nd America's Cup which will be held in Europe, in Valencia, after 153 years of absence will be
one of the first major sailing competitions of the 21st century. It was thus normal that a French
challenge takes part in this event with the support of the French Sailing Federation. The values
carried by this team correspond to those that the Federation develops on a daily basis and we are
delighted by this association, which I hope will allow them to achieve their goals”, Jean-Pierre
Champion, President of the French Sailing Federation.
Thanks to the collaboration with the FFV, Thierry Peponnet (AREVA Challenge’s afterguard) and
Sebastien Col (AREVA Challenge’s Afterguard) are from now on part of the French Match Racing
Team. They will take part in many international races, which by regularly facing their counterparts
from the other challengers’ teams, will enable them to train towards the various stages of the
America's Cup. Finally the French Sailing Federation, within the framework of its support, will place at
the disposal of the K-Challenge team some of its technical experts from time to time who are Match
Racing specialists.
Moreover, the French Sailing Federation will accommodate in its Paris buildings the “K-Challenge
headquarters” and the K-Challenge media center throughout all official competitions of the 32nd
America’s Cup.
The headquarters will follow the races and the results of the competitions with live commentaries on
site by a member of the French Sailing Federation team. It will also be possible, each competition
day, to carry out live interviews after racing, in connection with the K-Challenge base and the teammembers there. This meeting spot will also make it possible for the team to accommodate its
sponsors in Paris for public relations events. www.ffvoile.org
