September Newsletter - Friedens United Church of Christ
September Newsletter F R I E D E N S 2015 U C C The summer heat is disappearing and the air will be drier, the breezes cooler and the rain less stormy. I do love autumn on the east coast. It will be my first one in eight years. I’m looking forward to the day when I can walk up the cemetery hill behind the church, look back, and see the trees on the hills all splendid in their fall colors. If you see me up there some day in October that’s what I’m doing; breathing in the crisp air and loving the reds and gold and yellows of the season. Other changes are blowing in besides the weather. Sunday School begins again, Youth group gets geared up, our worship times change and our attendance grows. We’ll be singing hymns on September 6, rallying on September 13 and blessing school backpacks on September 20th. And, it will be my first Oley Fair! Also, October 4th is celebrated in many traditions as the Feast of St. Francis Sunday. We’ll hear about his story in worship and we’ll be blessing the animals. The next thing you know it will be Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas! Yikes! Time does fly by doesn’t it? So, since November is really just around the corner I want you all to be mindful that the Regional Youth Event for the United Church of Christ is happening the second week in November and it’s happening right in our backyard (Wernersville). The event includes youth from UCC churches all over the east coast mid-Atlantic region. There will be attendees from the states of Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. It will be an opportunity for our youth (ages 13 and up) to meet other kids, hear great music, go to youth oriented worship services, play games, have small group discussions, eat, and be together in ways that will energize and engage them. There is an announcement about the event elsewhere in the Newsletter and I’ll be talking about it in Worship. One more important note: I ordered two of our awesome hoagies for a friend in Allentown. She and her husband have pronounced them so good that they have placed a standing order. I’m so proud to be pastor at the best hoagie making church in all of Berks (and maybe Lehigh) County. Love each other and love the grace of this world in the name of Jesus, yours with affection, Pastor Anne P a g e September Newsletter 2 P r a i s e s & P r ay e r s *Praises for Aviella Elizabeth Miller, born on July 23rd. Friedens News C o n t i n u e d S October A Special Request T U What is Trunk or Treat? Trunk or Treat, is a fun and safe way to celebrate Halloween. It is usually a church or communitysponsored event held in a large parking lot. The sponsors of the Trunk or Treat event park their cars together and open their trunks to reveal Halloween-themed decorations. Children can walk from trunk to trunk to look at the decorations and receive candy and treats. These events provide a controlled and safe family environment for trick-ortreaters of all ages. R D A Y O C T O B E R 17th Altar Flowers Thank you to everyone who sponsors the altar flowers! They make our worship services beautiful! Something to keep in mind: If you are unable to attend the worship service when you have sponsored the altar flowers, please remember to ask a friend to take them home for you, or ask another member to deliver them to a someone in need of a smile! It’s a shame to let the flowers sit on the altar all week, they get lonely! TRUNK OR TREAT is not just a Youth Group Event In fact, everyone in Friedens can help take part. It’s a prefect way for families in the community to experience our church! We need LOTS of people (Friedens members & why not invite your neighbors and friends too! ) to bring their cars, park in the parking lot & and decorate their trunks. Don’t forget the candy! (or other goodies you may want instead) Then, when it’s time, the kids will come trick or treating to your car for their candy or treats! It’s Friedens way of keeping Trick or Treating safe! Trunk or Treat happens to fall on the day of the Oley Halloween Parade - which means that the opportunities would be huge to extend a warm Friedens Welcome to potential new members!
