On January 27th, 2016, folk icon Joan Baez celebrated her 75th birthday with a historic
performance at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The special event honored her
legendary 50-plus years in music in an intimate, career-spanning live performance.
Baez performed alongside fellow artists and friends, including: David Bromberg, Jackson
Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Judy Collins, David Crosby, Indigo Girls, Emmylou
Harris, Damien Rice, Paul Simon, Mavis Staples, Nano Stern and Richard Thompson. Of
the event, Rolling Stone calls her performance "true to spirit, a folk concert through and

Poor Strange Girl is an exciting and strikingly modern rendering of traditional material
from both sides of the Atlantic featuring songs researched and resourced from the fine
collections of Frank Kidson, Frank and Anne Warner and Cecil Sharp, sitting alongside a
few, more contemporary songs and a series of her own self-penned tunes.
Multi-talented Yorkshire woman Alice Jones is nothing if not versatile - an Appalachian
and Yorkshire longsword dancer, an instrumentalist excelling on keyboards, whistle,
clarinet, tenor guitar and, as her solo debut album proves, possesses a wholly
distinctive voice just made for folk song. Her deliberate yet expressive tone and
heartfelt precision shines throughout the entirety of the album, portraying a true and
genuine connection with her material.
On a number of tracks Alice is supported by the fiddle playing of award winning
maestro Tom Kitching of Pilgrims' Way.
Many of the lyrics and songs have been adapted and enhanced by Alice and every one
of the arrangements showcases her thoughtful and attentive treatment, meticulously
honed and crafted to perfection.

The oral tradition of Tiree began to be recorded by The School of Scottish Studies soon after its
inception in 1951. Its first full-time collector and researcher, Calum MacLean (1921-1960),
visited in 1953 and his recordings are the earliest from the island in the Sound Archive. Next to
record was Dr Hamish Henderson (1919-2002), followed by several others.
This CD cannot include items from all the men and women of Tiree who have contributed to the
Sound Archive over the years but the contents are representative of an island where memories of
the past have remained strong amongst those with special gifts, interest and skill.
The 29 recordings of songs, music, poems, stories, Port a Beul and Canntaireachd are of great
historical and academic interest but should be enjoyed by those who simply enjoy the culture of
the various elements of the Scottish nation. It is hoped that listeners will get the feeling of being
in a Tiree home and enjoying a ceiliidh taking place.

Of Fairport Convention’s many line-ups, generally it's the Richard Thompson-Ashley HutchingsSandy Denny era that gets the most attention, followed by the return of Denny in the mid-'70s
with husband Trevor Lucas. But if there is one line-up that really doesn't get its due, it would be
the quartet of guitarist Simon Nicol, bassist Dave Pegg, fiddler Dave Swarbrick, and drummer
Dave Mattacks that remained after Richard Thompson departed following Full House.
Together, the four made two fine, underrated studio albums, Angel Delight and "Babbacombe"
Lee, but live—as this unreleased August 1971 concert demonstrates—they were a revelation.
Never during any of its eras did Fairport rock harder, and, though the band lacked any lead
vocalist of the stature of Denny or Iain Matthews, all four members of the group sang and sang
well, which lent their on-stage act extra energy. The show begins with the viola/violin duet
between Nicol and Swarbrick on "Bridge over the River Ash" that appeared on Angel Delight along
with the second track, "The Journeyman's Grace," but then the set list gets delightfully obscure
for Fairport fans with a piledriving version of "Mason's Apron," a tune that never showed up on
any of their studio albums.
Old faves "Sir Patrick Spens" (from Full House) and "Matty Groves" (from Liege and Lief) follow,
but then the band launches into the rollicking three-song medley "Sir B. McKenzie's Daughter's
Lament" which only appeared on a 1970 single and whose extended original title vied for entry in
the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest of its kind. The show winds up with the more
elegiac "Sir William ongest of its kind. The show winds up with the more elegiac "Sir William
music, and the ample low-end of this concert recording—mastered by Mike Milchner at
SonicVision—will have you dancing a jig across your living room. With notes by Richie
Unterberger featuring quotes from the band, and photos from the Fairport archives, this is a
major addition to the band's vast discography.

No singer-songwriter has ever stared at himself in the mirror with quite the intense honesty
displayed by Loudon Wainwright III throughout his career, but his first two albums, cut for
Atlantic in 1970 and 1971, respectively, really bare the soul to a degree perhaps only rivaled by
John Lennon's first solo album with the Plastic Ono Band.
Lust, suicidal feelings, fear of parenthood; all are grist for Loudon's songwriting mill—with such
fearless introspection, little wonder he later became an acclaimed actor. But if this all sounds like
a tedious wallow, it's not, for Wainwright is also probably the funniest singer-songwriter ever
(Sample rhyming couplet: "And a baby can spot your shtick/All the coochy coochy coo is a lot of
poo poo when you spread it on that thick"). This Real Gone release finally brings to retail the
original limited edition Rhino Handmade set that was only available online, and then only for a
heartbeat before it sold out, complete with bonus track ("Drinking Song"). These 24 tracks

‘Breakin’ Point’ is about the band's newfound search for another career high. “We started with some
other album title ideas – like 'Thriller 2'. Then we realised we were pushing the envelope so got into
the idea of a breaking point. If we broke it once, we can break it twice,” says Bjorn. That's why the
album artwork features a hammer with three heads on it, not just to strike your nightmares, but to
send a message out to everyone.
The trio's previous record 'Gimme Some' was Peter Bjorn and John's “power pop, guitar statement”,
focused on recreating in the studio what they were confidently doing live. This time they wanted to
do the total opposite. “This was about doing big pop songs,” says Bjorn, who recalls sitting around
listening to ABBA with his bandmates, marvelling at how they made it sound and look so easy.
On ‘Breakin’ Point’ the band have worked with producers Patrick Berger (Icona Pop, Robyn), Paul
Epworth (Florence And The Machine, U2, Paul McCartney), Greg Kurstin (Sia, Adele), Emile Haynie
(Lana Del Rey, FKA Twigs, Kanye West) and Pontus Winnberg (Miike Snow).

Paul Draper was the frontman, main songwriter and producer of Mansun - one of the
most iconic bands of the '90s. The band's debut album Attack of the Grey Lantern
entered the UK chart at No 1. The band split in 2003 while recording their fourth LP
(partially released on Kleptomania).
The EP features three equally brilliant, very different brand new tracks. Feeling My Heart
Run Slow - a thundering juggernaut of a revenge rock n roll song, No Ideas - a mindexpanding spy movie soundtrack condensed into just under six minutes and The Silence is

Andy MacFarlane of Scottish band The Twilight Sad, and will be released on digipack CD
and 180g black 12" vinyl.
The tracks on EP ONE were recorded at Paul's studio The Kitchen. No Ideas was recorded
with four times Grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist solo artist Steven Wilson (also
signed to Kscope). Steven played bass, acoustic and electric guitar, Moog, Mellotron and
Prophet synths on the track. The Silence is Deafening was co-written with Catherine AD
(aka The Anchoress). Her current album Confessions Of A Romance Novelist was coproduced and co-written by Paul.
Paul is currently working on his debut solo album for release in January 2017.

Kscope are giving 'Bravo' it's first release on vinyl and will be presented as a double LP
on 180g black vinyl with a 4th side artwork etching in a gatefold sleeve.
Formed in Oslo in 1996 by childhood friends Jon-Arne Vilbo and Thomas Andersen along
with Jan-Henrik Ohme (later joined by Mikael Krømer, Lars Erik Asp and Kristian Torp),
Gazpacho have honed their unique sound over a string of critically acclaimed albums and
numerous tours, including several with long-time supporters Marillion.
In 2002 Gazpacho entered a song contest on Make-A-Star with the song "Sea Of
Tranquility" and won. Their second entry, "Ghost" made it to second position, giving the
band the opportunity to release an album through MP3.com. This lead the band to release
their first official album 'Bravo' in 2003 - which contained five of the six tracks off the
MP3.com album plus six new compositions.
Utilizing the possibilities of the Internet the band had teamed up with the American
singer/songwriter fellow Make-A-Star contestee Esther Valentine and New Zealand
producer Peter Kearns. Valentine sang a duet with Ohme on the song Novgorod (which
she also co-wrote) and Kearns produced two of the tracks off 'Bravo'.
'Bravo' gained the band more international acclaim, with Dutch leading music magazine
Oor stating "their debut album is a rare beauty".
Gazpacho is currently enjoying the success from new studio album 'Molok'.

The Groovie Ghoulies re-issue project continues with this classic release from 1994!
Out of print now for over 15 years, this is the album that the Green Door Recording Company
was created for! Containing the original recordings of such classics as "The Beast With 5
Hands", "I Wanna Have Fun", "Back to the Garage" and so many more, this self-produced
release sold several thousand copies.
The Groovie Ghoulies gathered quite a collection of friends, fans, and community up in Seattle
and The Pacific Northwest, and this record was recorded at the also legendary Egg Studio in
Seattle, produced by Conrad Uno (Presidents Of The United States Of America, Fastbacks,
Teengenerate, HEAD, etc...). This lineup includes the full length debut of guitarist Roach, who
would end up in the band for the next 12 following years, second longest member only to
singer/songwriter/bassist Kepi. Wendy was the drummer, and in the great rock mythology, unlike
the real Beatles or Monkees, the Groovie Ghoulies all actually lived in and shared the same house
together!
Rehearsals WERE actually done in the basement, and the band would drive and play anywhere,
anytime, any day of the week on the West Coast, and continued to do so for the next three years.
At this point the band were regularly playing such San Francisco clubs such as the Purple Onion
and the Kilowatt with bands like the Nomads, Teengenerate, Shonen Knife, Mono Men, and in
Seattle with HEAD, FLOP, Fastbacks, Fallouts, Girl Trouble. LA shows with GWAR, L7, Lazy
Cowgirls, and the Finks just kept building the fun and momentum!

Samara Lubelski knows how to make highly refined “pop” records, and her newest album, The
Gilded Raid, is the best example yet of her baroque genius. Of course and completely understood,
this statement may come as a surprise for those most familiar with Lubelski’s more “outer”
sounds, but alas, it’s a wonderful thing indeed. With all of Lubelski’s lovely pastoral and ethereal
understandings fully in place on The Gilded Raid, the album is a most splendid beauty that
celebrates the forthcoming other-worldly new age. In other words, it’s nighttime music for the
new time. For The Gilded Raid, Lubelski worked with her long-time collaborators, Metabolismus,
and recorded it at their studio, Sumsilobatem, located in the village of Degenfeld near Stuttgart
Germany. With her well-seasoned team in place, it was inevitable that only a tuneful garden of
magical blessedness would be created.

On paper, Rodgers’ music might seem like it would add up to folk or alt-country. A band with
guitars, a pedal steel, some fiddles here and there. But on listening, you’re as likely to pick up
on an undercurrent of shoe-gaze, chamber pop, even post-rock on Two Years. The violins
oscillate under Rodgers’ melodies, more Dirty Three than country. The pedal steel soars.
Rodgers’ voice, beautiful and world-weary, echoes.
On Two Years, her first album since 2009’s Bright Day, Rodgers worked with legendary producer
Kramer, who was responsible for the sounds of first-generation shoe-gaze and slow-core
innovators like Galaxie 500 and Low. (Kramer mixed and mastered Bright Day, and returned as
producer this time around; he also produced two videos from the new album.) It’s fair to look at
the album as a product of Rodgers’ unconventional writing -- she’s an English professor, and looks
to literary sources for inspiration -- and Kramer’s sonic genius. Low comes to mind as a reference
point, so does Tara Jane O’Neil. That Two Years is her first recording in nearly seven betrays the
fact that Rodgers isn’'t rushing things. Song by song, she avoids the temptation to try to cram too
many words into a phrase; there’s a deliberate confidence in her delivery. Rodgers takes her
words seriously, and wants you to, too. (And not just her own words -- the album closes with a
haunting, otherworldly cover of Neil Young’s “I Believe In You” that turns the original on its
head.)

North Carolina native Jenks Miller is a bit too otherworldly to ever be pegged as a regional musician.
Still, he seems to have the South in his bones. Still, Miller is hard to avoid in the cultural hotbed of
the NC Triangle music scene. In addition to playing guitar in the beloved local rust rock unit, Mount
Moriah, Miller has released a run of spidery electric guitar solo records under his own name.
And for the last decade, he has helmed the experimental Horseback, whose humid, heavy drones
conjure like nothing else the suffocating, insect hum of the warm southern night. In recent years, he’s
been playing out with his purgatorial jam outfit, Rose Cross NC—an exercise, as their vaguely
alchemical name indicates, in the swamp psychedelia of the Southern occult.
Blues from WHAT is the first recording under the Rose Cross NC moniker to capture the searing sound
of the touring band’s labyrinthine live performances. This is somewhat ironic, as Blues is essentially a
solo album. Aside from Rose Cross keyboardist Elysse Miller’s welcome shadings on the Grendel Drone
Commander throughout the affair, Blues from WHAT still mostly finds Jenks Miller conjuring alone. One
wouldn’t necessarily know it, though. The proceedings are as densely tangled as anything in their live
set.
When prompted, Jenks Miller will happily unravel the various threads of esoterica woven into his
music. But what makes Miller’s musical oeuvre so extraordinary is the way he manages to keep his
revelations rooted in the physical and sonic landscape of the American South. There is a lived-in,
historic quality to Blues from WHAT that is absent from so much of the headspace abstraction of
contemporary experimental music. This music feels like it is from somewhere. At times, it feels like it
has always been there, waiting for us.

This pair of Grateful Dead shows, taken from an extended East Coast run in the Spring of 1978,

After gaining notice as a sideman on his brother Johnny's Second Winter album,
keyboardist/saxophonist/composer Edgar Winter signed to Epic Records and quickly
became one of the biggest stars of the '70s, releasing eight charting albums during the

Encompassing the marabi, kwela and jive styles of mid-twentieth century urban South African
music, this compilation covers the sounds, styles, assemblages and musicians that reside under
the umbrella of South African jazz - from the golden age of 1960s and 1970s to the new wave of
musicians in the twenty years of post-apartheid democracy.
The epicentre of much of early South African jazz was Sophiatown, a cultural hub of creativity,
politics and music in the 1940s and 1950s. It was in this suburb of Johannesburg that Dolly
Rathebe began her singing career. Sophiatown was also the place where saxophonist Kippie
Moeketsi carved out his sound. Some of Moeketsi's most mesmerising playing was with The Jazz
Epistles in the mid-1950s and it was as part of this group that he first performed alongside Dollar
Brand, now known as Abdullah Ibrahim.
Gospel, hip-hop and electronic music now dominate mainstream music in South Africa. But
against this backdrop, the new school of South African jazzers have embraced the diversity of
musical output, with many making the crossover themselves. Bokani Dyer regularly performs
with fellow band member and bassist Shane Cooper, in his electronic music alias Card On Spokes.
Furthermore, it could be argued the trajectory of popular music in South Africa over the last
twenty years is personified by Thandiswa Mazwai, who rose to prominence through her work
with kwaito group Bongo Maffin in the mid-1990s, before going on to encompass gospel and
delve into maskanda and electronic music in her solo career. Featured here is Thandiswa's take
on the South African Jazz standard 'Ntyilo Ntyilo'.

learned: depth without showmanship, beauty without kitsch platitudes...

"I thought before the Wahnfried project falls into oblivion, I'll get the record out under this
name even though I made it all on my own. The names of the other musicians, Tim Bales
and Katarina Nevaseynewa are only pseudonyms. I adopted this from Walter Bachauer
[aka Clara Mondshine, † 18 February 1989] who performed everything by himself on his
albums "Luna Africana" [1981] and "Memorymetropolis" [1983 - produced by KS] but then
invented seven musicians for "Luna Africana" with some exotic names. However, with
"Drums 'n' Balls", I also wanted to have the feeling again of what it's like to play in a band
where you don't have the absolute final say. In fact these were samples which my
colleagues from SNAP! [Luca Anzilotti & Michael Münzing] had in their archive. They
recorded many male and female vocalists and also rappers without end. Then in my studio
I noticed you actually cannot really play to these vocals because the voice goes through
the Indian quarter tone scale while our keyboard instruments only have semitones. So
while I'm playing, I'm racing after the voice with the chords and the pitch wheel. It was
really like being in a band where you can't just start playing but have to observe what the
other musicians play.
The bonus track "Chicken Biryani" was recorded the year before I did "Drums 'n' Balls". It
happens to be an Indian children's song but in a different tonality. For this song I used the
second sample of this Indian vocalist. Then I didn't know what to do with this piece, as it
wasn't my intention to do a real 'Indian' album. I tend to make single pieces which I pile up
over time until there is an occasion to use them on an album. The track didn't really fit on

A British journalist wrote about "Pictue Music": "...hypnotic quality. Klaus' first true synth
album." What you actually hear is mostly just one synthesizer, the (today historic) EMS
VCS 3, which was shortly later exchanged for the EMS Synthi A, which is in fact the same
instrument but just smaller and very handy for transportation. After all, Klaus started
already in 1973 to give concerts, and he was - as his old pals from Tangerine Dream - for

The concert at the KlangArt festival in 2001 came about because I got a phone call from
the promoters asking me if I'd like to perform there. After performances by Kraftwerk and
Tangerine Dream I thought, of course, now it's my turn. The only thing that came to my
mind was that it could be a good opportunity to work once again with [Wolfgang] Tiepold since he is my special cellist. So that's the way I did it. The comfortable thing about playing
with Tiepold is that we don't need to rehearse for a concert. I don't like rehearsals for
concerts anyway. My motto is, "Those who rehearse beforehand later fall on their band
mates' back."
We rely on our intuition live on stage and our common interaction. Tiepolt doesn't need to
have notes. And most importantly, he knows exactly when to stop playing. This is different
compared to most bands where you know when the guitarist starts playing his solo he will
never stop - unless you shoot him. Basically the only thing that can get in my way is my
stage fright; and I haven't been able to get rid of that to this day. “

Acid Park is an eight movement suite for synthesizers, samplers, and voice. Born from
balancing a love/hate relationship with song structure, baroque music, and soundart,
Acid Park projects the most embarrassing aspects of each form as radical, chaotic
elements organized by traditional constructs of composition.
Her writing process was simple, yet meticulous. All of the tracks were built as collages
by toying with sounds first, before cutting, pasting, and manipulating them in various
ways. Ohal worked with each synth instrument as a closed system: she extracted
sounds and repurposed them into complex textures and melodies. The percussion
sounds on Acid Park were derived from this same process, but slowed down or sped up
on tape and recorded back to the computer before landing in the mix.
Ohal wrote Acid Park with a cyclical listening experience in mind. These eight songs
grow and fold into each other, feeding on themselves like an ouroboros of lysergic
emanations.

John Persen made use of electronics in many of his works, but his all-electronic works
have remained a secret - until now.
John Persen's electronic works sound natural, and the music unfolds without directing
attention to the sounds themselves. Persen steered away from much of the other MIDIbased electronic music that was made at that time, as well as from the aesthetics of
much of the acousmatic music we hear today. He also avoided the strong technologyfocus that was being introduced with computer music. For these reasons, and because
of his clear compositional ideas, Persen's electronic music has successfully stood the
test of time. New synthesizer technology became adopted in popular music and jazz
music much quicker than in art music, as these were defined at the time, and there

Tristan Perich is a contemporary composer and sound artist from New York City who focuses on
electronic one bit sound.
Perich composed a series of compositions as well as sound art installations with 1 bit electronics,
which Perich describes as being music that never has more than one bit of information being
played at any given time. In Denmark he was an artist in residence, where he built a series of
sculptures called Interval Studies consisting of large amounts of small speakers all sending out
their own frequency. The blending of all of these independent frequencies caused a white noise,
or other forms of colored noise. Other works by him include Machine Drawings and 1-bit Video.
Together with Kunal Gupta and Katie Shima he forms the group Loud Objects. This group
performs electronic music by soldering.

The great Czech bassist returns once more to the music of Weather Report, the group he
co-founded with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter in 1970, re-evoking and expanding
upon the highly improvisational methodology of the original Weather Report.
It’s the improvisational freedom of the early Weather Report that most interests Vitous,
and he abides by their old rallying call “everyone solos and no one solos”.
On his earlier album ‘Remembering Weather Report’, he addressed the spirit of the old
band; this time he directly addresses its repertoire. Well-known Report repertoire reexplored includes “Birdland”, “Seventh Arrow”, “Scarlet Woman”, “Pinocchio” and
“Morning Lake” and Miroslav’s group also plays “Juggler’s Issue”, a piece which the first
Weather Report line-up played but didn’t record.
Interspersed along the way are three new blues tunes from Vitous’s pen. The band, driven
by the astounding double drumming of Gerald Cleaver and Nasheet Waits, is energetic
and daring, juxtaposing fast tempos and rhythmically free pulses, with Miroslav’s arco bass
playing sometimes sounding like a third horn in between the two saxophones.
Miroslav Vitous was first heard on ECM in the 1970s leading his own band with John
Surman, Jon Christensen, and Kenny Kirkland. In the 1980s he recorded for the label as a
member of Chick Corea’s trio with Roy Haynes (‘Trio Music’, ‘Live in Europe’) and issued a
dazzling solo bass album (1985’s ‘Emergence’). In the 1990s he was heard with Jan
Garbarek (‘Atmos’, ‘Star’). After a hiatus during which the bassist was developing and
marketing his highly successful symphonic orchestra samples software, he returned to
ECM for two volumes of ‘Universal Syncopations’ (2003 & 2007) – both of which were
critical and popular successes.

In 2015 ECM issued ‘Time Before And Time After’, Dominique Pifarély’s richly creative
solo recital. Now comes ‘Tracé provisoire’, a bracing quartet album, which provides a
marvellous context for the wider range of the French violinist’s expression.
Pifarély is a musician who thrives in the unstable territory between improvisation and
composition, and his pieces here establish ideas, structural elements and themes which
encourage textural, lyrical and abstract improvising to develop in the moment. The
interplay amongst the players is dynamic, exploratory and engaging, inspiring Dominique
to fine and differentiated soloing. The free movement of energy is central to the music,
which incorporates group improvising, luminous counterpoint, intense inner pulsations
and open, lyrical expanses.
This quartet was founded in the spring of 2014, but Pifarély, bassist Bruno Chevillon and
drummer François Merville have been regularly crossing each other’s musical paths for a
few decades. They are cornerstone players of improvised music in France and they’ve
brought new impulses to it, other ways of thinking about freedom and form. The band is
completed by pianist Antonin Rayon, making a first appearance on ECM.
‘Tracé Provisoire’ was recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the South of France in July
2015.

We are in the age of the improvising musician who explores new sounds. Michelson Morley

Brian Eno and Kraftwerk, the net result is music that has a strong personal identity. As
McMurchie, known for his work with Get The Blessing, explains, the overriding creative focus is
the development of a bold collective voice.
Crucial to that mission statement is the input of Dan Messore, the talented guitarist-composer
who has already made a sizeable impression on the UK jazz scene under the moniker Indigo Kid.
Messore was initially a special guest in Michelson Morley but has become a fully-fledged and
very valued member of the band. His chords and countermelodies, at times spiky, at times
soothing, mesh perfectly with the compelling atmosphere of each composition.
Whether Michelson Morley are weaving together simple, limpid melodic patterns or crafting long,
sumptuous ribbons of sound that flutter in the air in the most understated but resonant way their
arrangements are marked by a strong cinematic character.The Last Of Me Will Wait has a string of
elegiac melodic phrases framed by airy electronic trails that convey a wry romanticism while
There Are No Perfect Waves unfurls an endless digital surf that swells into a potent funk-rock
backbeat.
Using sound to convey a series of strong images is very much at the conceptual core of Michelson

“The music on my debut album 'Solo Gemini' spans a period of 25 years. I started composing aged
5 in the hallway at my nan's council flat in 1970's Islington, sitting on A to Z's that boosted the
height of my piano stool so that I could reach the keys. However the first significant piece I wrote
was 'Mutual Serenade' (Track 6) at the age of 18, which was inspired by Brazilian maestro
Hermeto Pascoal, after hanging out with him at Ronnie Scott's. Hermeto like me is not blessed
with a Rachmaninov sized span; he generously shared a technique for voicing chords in a way
that melody, bass and harmony can be played without compromise.
In a way, without compromise is a reason why this album has taken so long!
For me, composition is story telling, each of the tunes on this album has a narrative from my life.
The art of story telling is an aural tradition and is prone to elaboration and improvisation each
time the tale is told. It's a similar thing with my music; each time the piece is performed there is
improvisation, interpretation and embellishment, which adds to the emotional conversation of
the piece.
Playing these pieces live 100s of times is how I approach finding different ways to tell the stories
and in some respects my previous reluctance to put these tracks down was not wanting to
commit to a 'final statement' of how they should be.”

Fifteen years after 'Himmelrand - Tusenårsoratoriet', which Ketil Bjørnstad wrote together with
Stein Mehren, Bjørnstad is presenting a new, modern oratorio. This time he has written both
the music and the text.
'Sanger om tilhørighet' (Songs of Belonging) was commissioned by the St Olav Festival, and had its
world premiere at a very special concert at the Nidaros Cathedral on 27 July 2014. The critic for
the newspaper Adresseavisen gave the concert a glowing review: "With this world premiere the
St Olav Festival was given a worthy opening. Ketil Bjørnstad emerges here as a full-fledged
oratorio composer."
The Nidaros Cathedral Oratorio Choir, under the direction of Petra Bjørkhaug, sings all the choir
parts on the album. As in the past, Bjørnstad displays here an impressive ability to choose his
musical collaborators. Håkon Kornstad (saxophone and vocals), Tora Augestad (vocals), Anja
Lechner (cello) and Birger Mistereggen (percussion) assist the composer, each in his or her own
way, in imbuing the work with life and giving it wings.
The concert recording from the Nidaros Cathedral was made by the Norwegian Broadcasting
Corporation (NRK), and was later mixed by Jan Erik Kongshaug at Rainbow Studio. The album was
produced by Ketil Bjørnstad.

John Martin has spent the last 4 years coaxing these rather shy and often badly
behaved notes out from their hiding places. Through the use of special fingerings and
blowing techniques it is possible to produce several notes simultaneously, extending
the sound world of the saxophone from a monophonic to a polyphonic instrument.
Martin's focus is on incorporating these polyphonic sounds into tonal music. Circular
breathing then allows for the development of continuous rhythmic patterns, opening
up many new exciting rhythmic and textural possibilities.

Here is the follow up to last year’s Volume One of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers “Live In 1967”,
featuring Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood before they became Fleetwood Mac.
Volume 2 showcases three John Mayall originals including the opening track, all-time blues
classic “Tears In My Eyes”, “Chicago Line”, complete with John McVie bass solo, and “Please
Don’t Tell”, a great example of the power blues The Bluesbreakers were revered for.
Thanks to dedicated fan Tom Huissen who took his one channel reel-to-reel tape recorder into
various London clubs in 1967, these historical performances were captured for all time. Unheard
for almost fifty years, John recently obtained these tapes and began restoring them with the
technical assistance of Eric Corne of Forty Below Records. Corne adds, “While the source
recording was very rough and the final result is certainly not hi-fidelity, it does succeed in allowing
us to hear how spectacular these performances are.” It’s truly an exciting glimpse into music
history.

One of the unsung heroes of the Piedmont blues style, Robert Hicks, aka Barbecue Bob
recorded over sixty sides for Columbia Records and became one of the best-selling artists on
their 'race series', outsold only by Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters and Blind Willie Johnson. With his
original and witty compositions he was one of the real pioneers of the Atlanta blues scene of
the time, but his career was tragically ended by his death from pneumonia at the age of just 29.
Characterized by a heavy percussive guitar style, he often used a bottleneck and played with a
frailing technique that is more often associated with the claw hammer banjo. His twelve string
guitar gave a rich accompaniment to his warm nasal singing voice which, compared to the morbid

With a huge repertoire of songs ranging from hokum to slow blues and spirituals to traditional
songster tunes, his music is imbued with a special warmth typical to the East Coast blues. Even
from the opening few measures of his very first record 'Barbecue Blues', Hicks signature sound of
a bright and trebly twelve string guitar combined with his expressive voice is instantly accessible
and almost 'pop' sounding in comparison with other blues singers of the time.
Largely due to his life being tragically cut short in 1931, his music has been sadly overlooked and
has therefore not received the respect proffered to other East coast players such as Blind Willie
McTell and Buddy Moss. He was however a true innovator in his time, and this compilation gives
proof that his music is undoubtedly some of the most engaging early blues that you are likely to
hear.

perhaps they never existed. Maybe it's possible this was all a demonic 31st century hallucination

to explain the ultra-rare, ultra-magnetic artefact left behind: 'Pimp to Eat'. Originally dropping
from the skies in 2000, it is being re-released by Mello Music Group.
There are few clear things amidst the craziness. The centrepiece of the record is Pimp Rex (AKA
Rex Roland), the legendary Angeleno hustler, who did production for Body Count and chorus on
Ice-T's 'I'm Your Pusher'. He enlists his longtime collaborator Ice Oscillator (Ice –T), Keith Korg
(Kool Keith), Marc Moog (Marc Live) and Black Silver (Silver Synth).
All we really know comes from the abstractions assaulting our eardrums. Rex Roland's tribute to
the old analog sound, eerie synthesiser and pimp-slapping 808 drum machines. Ice-T and Kool
Keith trade bars like a rap Scully and Mulder.

With the 2015 release of the film Straight Outta Compton, Real Gone Music figured it was
about time somebody revisited one of the landmark albums of West Coast rap, The D.O.C.'s No
One Can Do It Better.
The D.O.C. a.k.a. Tracy Lynn Curry was a behind-the-scenes contributor to some of the biggest
and most hallowed rap releases ever, including Dr. Dre's The Chronic, NWA's Straight Outta
Compton, Eazy-E's Eazy-Duz-It, and Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle, and his Dr. Dre-produced debut
record lived up to the braggadocio of its title by going platinum, spawning the #1 rap singles "It's
Funky Enough" and "The D.O.C. & The Doctor," and being hailed by critics nationwide as one of
the greatest hip-hop albums ever recorded.
However, there has never been an updated reissue of the original 1989 CD, which, like most
releases of the early CD era, doesn't really do the music sonic justice. Real Gone Music's
Expanded Edition of this classic album adds seven impossible-to-find 12" single mixes to a
remastered version of the original release, along with liner notes by Aaron Kannowski that
feature quotes from The D.O.C. himself

September 14, 1972 poetry reading from which this 1980 release on John Fahey's Takoma
label is drawn. This is quintessential Bukowski, from the rude 'n' crude drawing that
adorns the front cover to the belches that punctuate the poems.
Having rescued this recording from the clinical, digital world of the compact disc and
restored it to its proper vinyl format, we at Real Gone are now putting it out in a collector's
"red wine" vinyl edition limited to 300 copies. If there were ever an echo of the analog, nonPC (personal computers or politically correct) world, this album would be it. EXPLICIT

As for the work itself, it's not really what you'd commonly conceive of as poetry, but rather
observations and vignettes drawn from life's darker side, focusing on perversions, poverty,
drunkenness, gambling, and bodily functions. But Bukowski's bemused air and selfdeprecating humor blunt the shock value of the words and emphasize the universality of the
themes. "I want you to hate me," he says to the audience, but it's hopeless—he is one of us.

Linus Roth’s disc of Weinberg’s three Sonatas for solo violin is the fourth recording he has
devoted to the Polish-born composer’s violin music, following Challenge Classics CDs of his
Violin and Piano Sonatas, Violin Concerto and Violin Concertino - two of which were
Gramophone Editor’s Choices.
Since he won the Echo Klassik Award for his EMI debut album in 2006, Linus Roth has made a
name for himself both as one of the most interesting violinists of his generation and as a
champion of wrongly forgotten works and composers. One such is Mieczyslaw Weinberg, a friend
of Shostakovich (whose music also appears here with a transcription of his Three Fantastic
Dances). Roth is perhaps the leading performer of Weinberg’s music currently; and his interest in
the composer led in 2015 to the formation of the International Mieczyslaw Weinberg Society.
Weinberg’s three unaccompanied violin sonatas are passionate works dating from 1964, 1967
and 1978. The Third Sonata, Op.123, is the most challenging and important: one continuous
movement lasting nearly half an hour, with many technical difficulties. This sonata is dedicated to
the memory of his father Shmuil Weinberg, who was a composer and conductor at the Yiddish
theatre in Kishinev. Given that Weinberg knew his father had been murdered in the Holocaust,
the sonata isn’t easy listening but it’s hugely rewarding.

An unusual disc devoted to the bassoon and contrabassoon, ‘Pro Contra!’ features beautiful
music by Mozart, Kees Olthuis, Franz Krommer, Erwin Schulhoff and Jean Françaix, performed
by Belgian Simon van Holen, contrabassoonist of Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Van Holen, a world-beater for sheer virtuosity and singing ability on his instruments, is
accompanied on this stunning - and maybe to some listeners unexpectedly enjoyable - recording
by string players, also from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Even following the instrument’s wave of emancipation last century, the very first composition
ever published for solo contrabassoon, ‘Bassnachtigall’ (1922) by Erwin Schulhoff, is still
something of a rarity, and sounds serious and droll at the same time. It takes the merest whiff of
the frivolous elegance in Mozart’s Sonata, KV292 to be enchanted by how the composer allows
the bassoon to sing. The Divertissement for bassoon and string quintet (1942) by Jean Françaix is
a telling example of French ‘joie de vivre’: lively, whimsical, waspish and brimming with rhythmic
subtleties. The Quartet, op. 46 no. 1 (1804) by Franz Krommer is a gallant and dashing work with
a contrasting touch of melancholy in its andante.
Recognized for his versatility and expressive sound, Simon Van Holen has performed worldwide
as a soloist, chamber and orchestral player. Trained at The Royal Conservatory in The Hague, he
completed his studies in 2010 at the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf. A former
member of the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchester, he has
performed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Deutsche
Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. In 2013, Simon Van Holen was awarded the Royal
Concertgebouw’s ‘Prix de Salon’ which made it possible to commission the Concertino for
contrabassoon and string quintet by Dutch composer Kees Olthuis recorded here.

A major addition to Gavin Bryars' extensive vocal works, the ‘I Tatti Madrigals’ are
performed by the outstanding German early music vocal group Singer Pur.
This, his Fifth Book of Madrigals, was a special collaboration with the Villa I Tatti – the
Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies which lies amidst the enchanting
oak and cypress-clad hills above Florence – for Gavin Bryars to write a series of madrigals
using Renaissance Italian texts by Petrarch, Bronzino, Battiferri and Michelangelo il
Giovane.
The beauty of the poetry is clearly reflected in Bryars’ music: perhaps because, in these
madrigals, the music is always at the service of the text. Bryars’ pieces are full of the word
painting to be found in the late madrigals of such composers as Marenzio, Monteverdi,
Pallavicino and Gesualdo: accented passing dissonances, chromatic changes and extreme
contrast of register for expressive effect, rising sequences in syncopation, they are all
there. But they are all made his own, through his unmistakeable, idiosyncratic voice.
This undertaking originally began with a commission to celebrate the munificent patrons
of the Villa I Tatti’s Music Library, but soon developed into a larger project, with
commissions in memory of other members of the community, and for specific occasions.
They were composed for the most part for the renowned vocal ensemble Singer Pur,
which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2017.

The outstanding Grieg Trio reflect every musical nuance in their spirited performances of four
Piano Trios by Josef Haydn. The composer’s originality is particularly evident in these trios,
conceived primarily for musical friends to play together. The sheer distinctiveness and the
accomplishment of his writing is readily and inescapably apparent.
The works here recorded show Haydn’s increasing attention to the form at the time of his two
historic London visits and afterwards. These visits were crucial not only in widening the
composer’s reputation but also in alerting him to the respect and renown his comprehensive
mastery could win him in the wider musical world.
While all three trios written in Vienna 1796/97 are for a first-class performer, from the pianist’s
point of view, the C major is the most demanding of them. But the E flat major Trio is also a
substantial and imaginative work in which the piano is given material that is almost virtuosic in its
scope. F sharp minor was an infrequently employed key in the 18th-century: Haydn notably used
it for just one of his symphonies, the ‘Farewell’. His Piano Trio Hob XV: 26 once again partakes of
the storm and stress associated with the key itself, although on a more domestic scale. The Trio in
G major is the best known trio on this disc, mainly on account of its finale, a Rondo all’ Ongarese,
generally known as the Gypsy Rondo - a title that is sometimes used for the trio as a whole.
Founded in 1987, the Grieg Trio has achieved widespread international recognition, with
performances in most European countries, the United States, Japan and New Zealand. They have
recorded works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms, Dvorak, Smetana, Grieg,

The second album by sisters Åshild and Ingfrid Breie Nyhus is deeply rooted in a wonderful
meeting between Norwegian folk music and art music. The Hardanger fiddle - in all its mythical
glory - is at the heart of the recording, an instrument which played a significant role in the
nation-building of 19th-century Norway.
In Norway the Hardanger fiddle was not just a mere musical instrument: in the country’s folklore
it functioned as a direct contact with the underworld. Halvorsen’s ‘Fossegrimen’ is built on the
myth around the fiddler Myllarguten, said to have been taught by the Grim himself, and paying
for it with his soul. Drawing on her substantial experience of interpreting Norwegian folk music on
the piano, Ingfrid has arranged Halvorsen’s famous suite for fiddle and piano.
Their father, folk musician, fiddler, composer and musicologist Sven Nyhus has often advanced
the Hardanger fiddle’s place in the art musical world: his ‘Three pieces for solo Hardanger fiddle’
was first and foremost a contribution to increase the awareness of the instrument in a concert
setting. Equally important in that regard is Johan Kvandal’s acclaimed ‘Quintet for Hardanger
fiddle and string quartet’, commissioned by the Arctic Arts Festival.
Åshild Breie Nyhus (b. 1975) is a fourth generation fiddler in her family at Røros, performing as a
soloist on the Hardanger fiddle with several Scandinavian symphony orchestras. Her
performances of the Norwegian folk musical heritage is combined with her practice as a classical
violinist and violist - in the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.
Ingfrid Breie Nyhus (b. 1978) has studied piano in Oslo, Helsinki and Hannover, won a range of
awards - amongst them ‘The Norwegian Soloists Prize’ in 2005 - and is now preoccupied with a
further specialization of folk-inspired music.
This is the second release by the Nyhus sisters for Simax Classics, following their hugely successful
album of Edvard Grieg’s Slåtter op. 72, recorded in the composer’s own living room.

‘Smilodon’ is a portrait of the Norwegian composer Lene Grenager (born 1969) featuring three
new concertos, written in close collaboration with and for a trio of great soloists – bass
clarinettist Rolf Borch, cellist Tanja Orning, and percussionist Håkon Stene.
The opening of ‘Smilodon’ (the name of a cat with enormous fangs and weighing 200 kilos from
America during the last Ice Age) is closer to porous thought than heavy-handed action. From an
undefined place deep down in the bass clarinet’s darkness rises a smoke signal that is reinforced
in percussion and high-pitched winds. It feels like the music could explode at any time.
Both the dark and the sturdy, the lithe and the explosive may perhaps be traced back to Lene
Grenager’s own instrument and her career as a performer. As a cellist she is specialized in
improvised music and works mainly in the quartets SPUNK and Lemur, and in a duo with singer
Sofia Jernberg. The cello is never far away when she is composing.
In ‘The Operation’ (2012), Grenager and percussionist Håkon Stene place the cello on the
operating table. Together they approach the instrument systematically as a passive, percussive
source of sound. The cello is stripped of tradition and convention and is treated as a primitive
object, a wooden box with strings, by a musician with long experience, without any expressive or
motile memory connected to the instrument. The piece is part of a research project in which
Stene critically investigates the potentially unlimited number of instruments available to him as a
percussionist as well as relationships they create between body and instrument.
The Cello Concerto from 2006 was written at the same period as the music on the CD ‘Slåtter, slag
og slark’, where Grenager investigates her own instrument both as soloist and composer. Much of
this folk music was played for dancing and its organic character often comes from dance steps
and rhythms that are metrically uneven. With Grenager both the distorted rhythms and the
folkdance’s energy survive to be translated into a sinfonietta, which also has a soprano on equal
footing with the other instruments. The cello part begins in the inflections of folk music, but with
a sound that immediately bursts out from notes and melodies, and over into a wide vocabulary of
sounds of friction between instrument, bow and body.

David Chesky’s radically original powerful compositions on ‘The Venetian Concertos’ are a
tribute to the classic Italian Concerto Grosso form. The American composer’s four works here
are performed by the Orchestra of the 21st Century.
Chesky uses his fondness for the Baroque as a starting point. However, influenced and inspired by
Brazilian, Urban, and Latin music, he then replaces the Baroque line contour with dense
chromatic polyphony. The collision of styles creates a powerful new definition of the orchestral
concerto form, one which embraces a more contemporary and relevant approach to both
counterpoint and energy.

The clarinetist Dirk Altmann came to the Tacet label and asked if they would like to record
Sergei Prokofiev's Quintet. The answer was yes as the reputation of the Ludwig Chamber
Players preceded them, but what to record with it? The Quintet only lasts a quarter of an hour.
What other chamber music is there by Prokofiev? So they went on the search...
What came out of it is this kaleidoscope of Prokofiev's chamber music output, together with a
beautiful new instrumentation of the "Visions Fugitives" for 10 instruments under the pseudonym
of M. Ucki.
Few composers have been so capricious, stylistically as well as compositionally. Uninhibited
boldness, such as the same melody line played simultaneously on different instruments, only with
different phrasing, alternating with apparently conventional elements. Pieces of breathtaking
virtuosity and boldness on the one side contrasting with enraptured, tender and melancholic
moods on the other from a man who was probably always caught between two stools and wasn't
entirely at home anywhere.
A cosmopolitan ahead of his time.

A small boat rocks helplessly on the waves, delivered up by the ocean; the listener holds tight

It's an almost perfect illusion, whether it's the bells down below in the valley or the catacombs
where the dead lie sleeping. And the "Dance of the Hut on Fowl's Legs" gives free rein to fantasy,

The final symphony in Tacet's Beethoven Series is finally here in Tacet's Real Surround Sound.

This new recording from Leeds Cathedral of favourite Catholic Hymns reflects the history
of the Catholic church in this country and will attract a large following of enthusiasts as
it is an historic collection of Catholic hymns sung during the past 200 years; a volume 2 is
also planned for next year.
The Diocese of Leeds has the largest church music programme in the United Kingdom. In total it
maintains 58 choirs comprising over 2500 children meeting weekly. There are 43 school choirs,
four boys’ choirs, four girls’ choirs, three mixed children’s choirs, two youth choirs, a
groundbreaking new choir school and a semi-professional adult choir.
The Cathedral Choirs have recorded many CDs and their 2013 CD of Duruflé’s Complete Choral
Works has attracted widespread critical acclaim. In 2015 CD releases included Arvo Pärt’s choral
works and organ discs by Andriessen and Elgar.
Last year, the Cathedral Junior Boys’ Choir recorded the soundtrack for a promo for the feature
film ‘The White King’ and Bradford Catholic Youth Choir recorded the choral soundtrack for
‘London Fields’, a major new film with Johnny Depp and Billy Bob Thornton.
