The Legend Behind the ‘Legend’
Horseman’s Hollow
A daytime visit here is the perfect prelude to an evening
at Blaze, Horseman’s Hollow, or Irving’s ‘Legend.’ Irving’s
fascinating home – a colorful blend of architectural styles
– will showcase numerous objects related to Irving’s famous
story and other tales. Visitors can also enjoy a shadow puppet
performance of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and experience one
of Irving's spooky tales on a walk through the woods.
Taking the tale of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow to its
darkest extremes, Horseman’s Hollow returns for a
fifth year of highly entertaining haunted mayhem,
now expanded by popular demand to 13 evenings.

at Philipsburg Manor | Sleepy Hollow, NY
Philipsburg Manor transforms into a terrifying landscape ruled by the undead, the evil, and the
insane. Visitors begin walking a haunted trail, stumbling upon scary scenes of a town driven
mad by the Headless Horseman. The Hollow’s unfortunate inhabitants are all too ready to keep
visitors from ever leaving. Creatures, human and otherwise, lurk in the shadows, ready to terrify
the unsuspecting while incredible special effects disorient and unsettle. Elaborate costumes and
the work of award-winning feature-film makeup artists make it all too real. Those who survive the
trail enter the terrifying ruins of Ichabod’s Schoolhouse, where they must endure a twisted maze
of horrors too terrible to describe, only to end up in the lair of the Horseman. Heads will definitely
roll…maybe even your own! This is Sleepy Hollow’s premier haunted attraction, right in the heart
of the village. Not suitable for small children or the faint of heart. Enter at your own risk!

‘By far the best Halloween event

— from Facebook posts and TripAdvisor reviews
at Van Cortlandt Manor | Croton-on-Hudson, NY
The tri-state area’s biggest, most electrifying Halloween
event returns for 25 delightful nights in 2014!
Admission times vary by evening
See more than 5,000 individually hand-carved, illuminated jack o'lanterns in this elaborate
walkthrough experience. Meander through an historic, 18th-century riverside landscape and discover
a breathtaking display — all made of jack o'lanterns!
Adults, $20 (Sat $25)
Children 3-17, $16 (Sat $20)
Walk through a covered bridge adorned with jack o’lanterns on all sides — even the ceiling! — and
emerge to see Sleepy Hollow Country’s most iconic inhabitant, the Headless Horseman! Oooh and ahh at
intricate pumpkin character portraits from Washington Irving’s famous tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Tumbling acrobats and circus characters will put a smile on your face, and a special 10th anniversary
pumpkin cake will whet your appetite for…more pumpkin! Witness the incredible sight of gourd-filled
Jack-in-the-Boxes springing up and bouncing around. See slithering snakes, a giant spider web, and go
gaga over shrunken Little Monsters. Gaze in amazement at a working doomsday grandfather clock.
A giant sea serpent adds some hiss to the Undersea Aquarium while comical, squash-eating Venus
pumpkin traps sprout in the garden. Blaze's perennially popular Jurassic Park includes a triceratops,
a pterodactyl, a brontosaurus, and a T-Rex!
Come gawk at more jack o'lanterns than ever before. Tens of thousands of visitors experienced last
year’s Blaze, which was sold out EVERY NIGHT! Complete with sound effects, elaborate synchronized
lighting and an all-original soundtrack by recording artist Richard Christy, this not-to-be-missed
spectacle is the area's most innovative Halloween happening.

Valley (perfect for fall foliage!) and New York City. It features elegant accommodations, fine
dining, and spectacular vistas worthy of Europe’s storybook royal residences.

And now, following a major multi-million dollar restoration, the Castle also houses a luxurious
Thai-inspired spa specializing in holistic THANN™ treatments — the first of its kind in the U.S.
Guests looking to unwind after an excursion to The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze or Kykuit, the
Rockefeller estate, can enjoy a rejuvenating massage, facial, or body scrub. Hungry leaf peepers
can also tuck into a plate of Maine sea scallops, Long Island duck breast, or one of the many
mouth-watering entrees at the Castle’s award-winning new restaurant, Equus.
Long before the Castle Hotel & Spa became a premier destination for relaxing and romantic
getaways, it held a prominent place in Westchester and New York City society at the turn of
the 20th century. Built between 1897 and 1910, this Norman-style castle was developed by
General Howard Carroll, an esteemed businessman, newspaper man, and playwright. The hilltop
mansion, originally named Carroll Cliff, borrowed inspiration from King John’s famous Castle
Lismore in County Waterford, Ireland.
Spanning more than 100 years of history, the Castle is a sumptuous escape to the enchanted
era of America’s Gilded Age. It also stands as a model for preserving and celebrating a cherished
historic landmark and tourist destination. Historic Hudson Valley is proud to have the Castle
Hotel & Spa as a long-standing Hospitality Partner. In addition to hosting gatherings for our
donors, the resort offers special packages featuring visits to local National Historic Landmarks
and popular events, from Blaze and Horseman’s Hollow to the all-new LIGHTSCAPES.
"We are delighted to have a wonderful ongoing relationship with our friends at Historic Hudson
Valley,” says Gilbert Baeriswil, General Manager at Castle Hotel & Spa. “The whole region is
benefiting from their continued efforts to constantly think about new ways to promote the area."

America’s ‘Founding Father of Literature’ created a romantic,
picturesque estate nestled along the Hudson riverbank. The
enchanted landscape of Washington Irving’s much-loved
Sunnyside has been charming guests for generations. Visitors
today hear about Washington Irving’s storied past and how he
came to be America’s first internationally famous author. His
characters, from the Headless Horseman to Rip Van Winkle, are
global icons, and Irving’s legacy lives on at his whimsical estate.
Explore the stone manor house and brick ferry house, wander through
the heritage gardens, and stroll down a quiet country road along the
Croton River. There, you’ll experience the domestic life of a patriot
family living in the years just after the American Revolution — the New
Nation period. With its extraordinary collection of colonial and federal
furnishings, the manor house illustrates the opulence enjoyed by the
Van Cortlandts. In contrast, the ferry house brings alive the strenuous
challenges of living in post-Revolutionary America.
