A Word about Baptisms:
Baptisms are celebrated on the first and third Sundays of the month at 1:45 PM and the fourth Saturday at 12:30 PM. Please call the Parish Office to arrange for the Baptism of your child.
Godparents for Baptism must be at least 16 years of age, have received the Sacraments of Baptism,
First Communion and Confirmation and be "eligible" to be a Godparent. Godparents who are not registered at Saint Matthew’s need a "Letter of Eligibility" (not a Baptismal Certificate) from the Parish
they belong to at present. If you have any difficulty or questions about any of these points, please call
us.
Families that want a so-called “private Baptism” at a time separate from the above with a visiting
priest or deacon are advised that no date will be set until the visiting clergy have contacted the Pastor
and obtained his permission.
If one wishes a particular priest or deacon assigned to the Parish to perform your child’s Baptism it
can be done at the regular Parish Baptism administered by that priest or deacon.
Naming your children
Please remember that the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church obliges Pastors to be sure that
children are not given names "contrary to Christian sentiment" at Baptism. Name your children after
family members so that they will have a sense of "connection" in a fractured world! The Church asks
us to give children the names of Saints for the same reason: so that they may have special intercessors in Heaven and may have a Heavenly "friend" to learn about and imitate. In today's world, your
children need all the help they can get: give them the beautiful names of the Saints and of family
members and you will be giving them a great treasure!
Father Hewes
2015 marks the Parish’s 50th anniversary. In 1965 Bishop Kellenberg assigned Father
Leo Goggin to go out into ‘the country’ and establish a new Parish. It went from Masses in supermarkets and Baptisms in living rooms to the beautiful Parish we see today
under the guidance and care of four more pastors and many dedicated priests, deacons, religious and laity.
We will celebrate this year with the following events; a mixture of the Liturgical, spiritual, and social. Please mark your calendar for the following events.
Friday, June 12th: 7:30PM Our Parish Music Director, Thomas Tirino, will be performing a Benefit Concert for St. Matthew’s at The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five
Towns College. 305 North Service Road, Dix Hills, NY
Friday ,July 31st: “Parish Day” at Bethpage Ballpark in Islip for a L.I. Ducks baseball game with reserved seating for St. Matthew’s parishioners. (The form is included
in the bulletin.)
Saturday Sept.19th We will mark the anticipated Feast Day of St. Matthew with a
special Mass at 5PM in the church with the glorious sounds of our Parish Choir.
Sunday Sept. 20th , a gala Parish Dinner/Dance at Watermill Caterers in Smithtown.
To close out the year a Parish Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held to solemnly give thanks for the graces and blessings of the past 50 years. The date will be
announced.

Please join the millions worldwide who pray each day for the monthly prayer intentions of
Pope Francis. Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered
themselves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope.
DAILY OFFERING PRAYER
God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to
offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit,
who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to
Your love. With Mary, the mother of our Lord and of the Church, I pray especially
for this month's intentions as proposed by the Holy Father. Amen .
May
Universal: That, rejecting the culture of indifference, we may care for our neighbours who suffer,
especially the sick and the poor.
Evangelization: That Mary's intercession may help Christians in secularized cultures be ready to proclaim Jesus.
RESPECT LIFE NEWS Spiritual Adoption Program
MONTHS SEVEN AND EIGHT – Developing Baby
You are in the home stretch with your spiritually adopted baby. He/she is
completely formed, and has been since 8 weeks. All he/she is doing now is
gaining weight - - and making his/her mother uncomfortable with his/her
size. But she is not worried. In a short time, her baby will be born. Your baby’s mother appreciated the prayers you have said for her and her baby
throughout the pregnancy. It has not been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace she needed to bring her baby to term.
Spiritual Adoption Prayer
Dear Jesus, child of Mary, I love you and thank you for your unconditional love. I plead with you
to save the life of ______________, the unborn child whom I have spiritually adopted and whose
life is threatened by abortion. May this child be allowed to grow in wisdom, age and strength in
Your presence and in the sight of all. Amen

By your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul you fulfill the commandment to love

Kathryn Monaco Douglas - Young Widow and Widowers
Shortly after her husband’s death, Diane Sweeney started The Bob Sweeney Foundation in memory of her husband Bob. This Foundation provides a weekend at Camp Alvernia
in Centerport for young children who had a parent who had recently died. There is no fee for
the weekend. In addition, each year the Foundation has a Christmas party for these children
and their families. This is a wonderful Foundation as it helps so many children who are grieving the devastating loss of a parent.
Knowing the great work that Kathryn Monaco Douglas, along with her friend Arlene
Ricca, has done for YOUNG WIDOW AND WIDOWERS here at St. Matthew’s, the Bob
Sweeney Foundation honored Kathryn at the Huntington Hilton on April 19 th. This was a well
deserved honor. Over the last 8 years, Kathryn, who had been a young widow herself, began
a group for widows and widowers, 55 years of age and under. She leads 3 groups a year
and has helped hundreds of young widow and widowers who come from all over LI and
queens to participate in her group.
One day when I complemented her for all of the good she has done, she responded,
“isn’t that what God wants us to do?” May God continue to bless the good that Kathryn has
done so lovingly, prayerfully and selflessly.
She is sponsoring a walk on May 31st at Belmont Lake State Park. When Kathryn
started the walk, 30 people participated. Last year, there were about 500 people who participated. Please read the form on the next page and consider joining us for the walk. The
funds that are raised help the young widow and widowers and their families.
Thank you and God bless you. Sister Kay McCarthy

Sisters of St. Dominic Luncheon Every June, my Religious Community from Amityville, has a luncheon for
the benefit of our sick and retired Dominican Sisters. While we have Sisters who are still working and volunteering at 80 years of age and over, we have many, many Sisters who are retired and very ill. I am so inspired
and grateful to them for their faith, prayers, example and dedicated service.
For the luncheon, we need new and unused gifts, valued at $3 and above. These gifts will be used in raffle
baskets and as prizes. Perhaps, you have some that you received at Christmas time. If you would like to donate such gifts, please bring them to me in the Parish Center. We also need baskets - full and/or empty, and
gift certificates that will be raffled at the luncheon. In the past, you the wonderful Parishioners of St. Matthew’s
have been very, very helpful to us. Recently, many of you even bought chances for the benefit of our many
sick, elderly and retired Sisters. Please know how very grateful I am to you for always being so good to us.
The Sisters and I promise to pray for you and for all of our wonderful benefactors. Truly, some of the nicest
people in the world are at St. Matthew’s. I’m sure you’ll agree! Thank you and God bless you. May you experience the new life of the Resurrection during this Easter Season.
