Charm City Pearls Foundation, Incorporated (501c3), in partnership with Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Incorporated Psi Phi Omega chapter welcomes your support and participation in
our fundraising event, “An Evening of the Arts with Charm City Pearls.” Known for its many
contributions to all facets of the Arts, and for the multiple successful Artists it has produced,
Baltimore, Maryland, will be given the stage it deserves honoring its legacy, heritage, and
successes while encouraging greater youth engagement in the Arts. This celebration will be
held in the spirit of service and care for all mankind, as funds raised will be dedicated
towards providing quality programming for the residents of Baltimore City. “An Evening of
the Arts with Charm City Pearls” will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at The Hippodrome Theatre at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center 12 N. Eutaw Street, Baltimore,
Maryland 21201. This black-tie affair will include a VIP Awards Reception honoring Artists in
Alpha Kappa Alpha as well as Baltimore, Maryland who have achieved admirable success
and made a tremendous impact in the Arts. Some of these honorees include:

The event will culminate with a featured performance by multiple 10-time
GRAMMY® Award-winner, songwriter, actor, author, philanthropist, entrepreneur
and activist Chaka Khan.
Alpha Kappa Alpha is an international service organization and is the oldest Greek-lettered
organization established by African-American college educated women. Psi Phi Omega chapter consists of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha who have been given the charge to continue
the 106-year legacy of Alpha Kappa Alpha. The mission is to serve the global community
through dynamic international service programs designed to answer today’s social and
economic challenges, addressing issues related to Education, Leadership, Health, the Arts,
Economics and Family. Psi Phi Omega was chartered on February 16, 2014 with purpose to
serve those in need, and through our charismatic, innovative, and cutting edge service
programs we strive to make a difference in the lives of many.

Awards Platform
The Late Dr. Nathan M. Carter Arts Icon Award
Dr. Nathan M. Carter, for many years, led the Morgan State University Choir in performances all over the
world while building it into one of the premier vocal groups in the nation. Dr. Carter was born and
raised in Selma, Alabama, where his mother was a singer and pianist and his father a minister and a
professor of Old Testament theology at Selma University. He graduated from Hampton Institute in
Virginia and received a master's degree from the Juilliard School of Music in New York. He received a
doctorate in music from Baltimore's Peabody Institute.
The Late Mary Shy Scott Advancements in Arts Education Award
Mrs. Mary Shy Scott was the 23rd International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
During her tenure as the 23rd International President, Mrs. Scott successfully led the organization in
many accomplishments, such as organizing the first non-military memorial to World War II veterans at
Pearl Harbor, dedicated to the unsung hero, Ms. Doris Miller. She formed a partnership with the Library
of Congress in a national campaign to promote reading, and she also renewed the Sorority’s Cleveland
Job Corps contract. A music education teacher, choir director, and songstress Mrs. Scott lived a life
dedicated towards teaching others to excel in the Arts.

The Jan Spivey Gilchrist Visual Arts Award
Mrs. Jan Spivey Gilchrist is an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and her
career as an artist has spanned a quarter of a century. She has won numerous awards, including the
Coretta Scott King Award for her work on Eloise Greenfield’s Nathaniel Talking, and her illustrations
have been featured in the New York Times, Boston Globe, L.A. Times, USA Today, Ebony Magazine, and
others. Mrs. Gilchrist was inducted in the International Hall of Fame for writers of African Descent in
2000, and the Society of Illustrators in 2001. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education
from Eastern Illinois University, Master of Arts degree in painting from the University of Northern Iowa,
a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing for children from Vermont College, and a Doctoral degree in
English from Madison University.
The Jada Pinkett Smith Applied Arts Award
Mrs. Jada Pinkett Smith is an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Jada
Pinkett Smith was born to Robson Pinkett Jr. and Adrienne Banfield in Baltimore, Maryland. She
majored in dance and choreography at the Baltimore School for the Art, and attended college at the
North Carolina School of the Arts before pursuing her career in acting.
Mrs. Pinkett Smith’s career continues to be successful in many areas of the arts, in addition to acting.
She is an actress, producer, director, author, singer-songwriter, and businesswoman. She began her
career in 1990, when she made a guest appearance in the short-lived sitcom True Colors. She starred in
A Different World, produced by Bill Cosby, and she featured opposite Eddie Murphy in The Nutty
Professor (1996). She starred in dramatic films such as Menace II Society (1993) and Set It Off (1996).
She has appeared in more than 20 films in a variety of genres, including Scream 2, Ali, The Matrix
Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, Madagascar, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Madagascar 3:
Europe's Most Wanted. Also recognized as a fashion icon, Mrs. Pinkett Smith’s influence on the fashion
design industry has made an impact across the globe.
The Phylicia Rashad Performance Arts Award
Ms. Phylicia Rashad is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
She was born in Houston, Texas. Her mother, Vivian Ayers, was a Pulitzer-prize nominated artist, poet,
playwright, scholar, and publisher. Her father, Andrew Arthur Allen (d. 1984), was an orthodontist. She
studied at Howard University, where she received a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. She also holds an
honorary doctorate degree from Spelman University.
Ms. Rashad has led a very successful career as an actress in television, film, and theatre. She has starred
in many shows, including the hit ABC soap opera One Life to Live in 1983. She is best known for
another television role, that of attorney Clair Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. She also
played Kill Moves' affluent mother on Everybody Hates Chris. In 2004, Ms. Rashad became the first
first African-American actress to win the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a
Play, for her role in the revival of A Raisin in the Sun. She later appeared in the television adaptation of
A Raisin in the Sun, for which she won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television
Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special. She starred on Broadway as Big Mama in an all-African
American production of Tennessee Williams's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
directed by her sister Debbie Allen. Ms. Rashad appeared alongside stage veterans James Earl Jones
(Big Daddy) and Anika Noni Rose (Maggie), as well as film actor Terrence Howard, who makes his
Broadway debut as Brick. She will appear as Violet Weston, the drug-addicted matriarch of Tracy Lett's
award-winning play, August: Osage County at the Music Box Theatre. In 2010, Ms. Rashad starred in
the Tyler Perry film For Colored Girls, based on the play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide
When the Rainbow Is Enuf by Ntozake Shange, and has recently appeared in the Lifetime Networks
television remake of Steel Magnolias.
