Santa Definitely Came to town! - Joliet Township High Schools
The Santa Definitely Came To Town! The JTHS Alumni Association painted downtown Joliet red when 400 runners/walkers in Santa suits took to the streets from the JT Central campus for the inaugural Santa Run 5K/Santa Stroll 1 mile walk on Saturday, November 30, 2013. It was an amazing sight with entire families walking together and/or pushing strollers on the way to the finish line where a party was hosted by the Jacob Henry Mansion. Never mind the “naughty or nice” lists, all those who supported this fundraising event are on the alumni association’s “very nice list!” Board members are extremely grateful for all those who participated to raise funds benefitting the alumni association and the students and programs of District 204. The Santa Run/Santa Stroll was certainly a team event in every sense of the word with special thanks to various Joliet Township High School student groups from both the Central and West campuses who volunteered their services to assist the runners and walkers along the route. Our gratitude goes to the Santa Run’s title sponsor, Legat Architects and Jeff Sronkoski, (also known as “Kris Kringle”.) In addition, the alumni association is very appreciative for the support of Anew Chiropractic, City of Joliet, Great American Bagel, Jacob Henry Mansion Estate, Joliet Area Historical Museum, JJC Alumni Association, JJC Culinary Arts, Joliet Park District, Joliet Slammers Baseball, Just’ Toni’s, Milano Bakery, Persona Grata Salon, Rialto Square Theatre, TCBY, Will County Executive Larry Walsh, and WJOL 1340 AM. The run’s special elves were Abe Conde Photos; Dr. Cheryl McCarthy, District 204 Superintendent; Dr. Teresa Gibson, JT West Principal; John Randich, JT Central Principal; Michaelynn Rogers, and Mark Turk, President of the JTHS Foundation. Thanks to Dick Schuster and Richard Fredrickson of Joliet Access Cable who televised the event and the interviews that were broadcast during the holidays on Channel 6. And, last but certainly not least, the Joliet Police Department and the auxiliary police groups under the direction and supervision of Captain Les O’Connor who did an outstanding job of keeping our Santas safe through the streets and main intersections of the route. The alumni relations office has received rave reviews and very favorable comments from the participants. The 2014 Santa Run/Santa Stroll is set for Saturday, November 29, with the start and finish line at JT Central. More details will be forthcoming as they unfold from the North Pole! Santas on the run! A SALUTE TO OUR MILITARY ALUMNI We can never say thank you enough to those who serve in the armed forces. Our military and our veterans need to know we are thinking of them. Former U.S. Marine Corps Captain, Clancy Hess, and Dr. Cheryl McCarthy, Superintendent, posed for a photo following the Joliet Central 2013 Veterans ceremony. At 92 “years young,” Clancy is still a charmer in uniform. Chris Dragatsis, Class of ’48, was invited to Washington, D.C. by the Defense Department to join in the 60th anniversary celebration of the end of the Korean War. The armistice was signed on July 27, 1953 which was four days prior to his 23rd birthday. Chris was a 2nd Infantry Officer commanding a rifle platoon in the 23rd Infantry Regiment and was involved in seven months of combat action. Ernie Serena, Class of 1941, is a television pioneer who worked with the very first video recording equipment. He started working with radio equipment as a student at JT and was a licensed radio operator in Morse code. His first job was an engineer at WCLS radio in Joliet and later with WJOL. He retired as a broadcast engineer after working for WLS-TV Channel 7 for 38 years. In addition, he has been the coordinator of his class reunion for over 50 years. Ernie is a Navy veteran serving in both WW II and the Korean War as an electronics technician. In the summer of 2013, he went on the honor flight to Washington, D.C. Donald Aldeen, Class of 1953, served as a Corporal in the Army from ’54 through 1956. He celebrated his 60th reunion with his classmates in 2013. Highlights from the JT Central 2013 Veterans Ceremony… Alumni veterans honored included: David Cooling attended JT Central until May of 1964. In July of ’64, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam until 1971. Following his completion of service with the Marines, he joined the Army serving until 1985. Thomas Foster left his classroom to enlist in the U.S. Navy. In 1945, he was a sailor aboard the air craft carrier, USS Franklin, as it approached Okinawa, Japan. On Monday morning, March 19, a Japanese bomber came out of the clouds to make two direct hits on the carrier. On the flight deck of the carrier were 31 air craft fully armed and loaded with fuel ready for take off. The planes exploded with tons of bursting ammunition and fuel. The flames threatened to destroy the carrier. The crew stood their ground and fought the flames. Of the 2,600 sailors on board, over 900 of the crew lost their lives. Thomas lost his life at the age of 17 aboard the Franklin. 4 Richard Mejia, Class of 1960, served in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Sergeant 5. Following basic training he served in Vietnam until he was wounded in 1968. Richard is a recipient of the Purple Heart. Frank Varman is a 1964 graduate of JT. He served in the Vietnam war with the U.S. Navy from 1966 through 1969 as a 3rd Class Petty Officer and as a Navy Seabee helping to build roads, bridges docks, and runways. During the 2013 ceremony, it was the first time that three members of the same family are not only alumni, but are also veterans and/or are currently serving in the military who were recognized and honored. Ken Kelly, JT Central, Class of ’67, entered the Army in 1969 and served in Vietnam for 11 months attaining the rank of Specialist E5. He is not only an alumnus, but has also served District 204 for 24 years in the maintenance department. Michael Kelly, Ken’s son, an ’89 Central graduate, is a 1st Sergeant in the U.S. Army 178th Infantry “C” Company. He has served two tours in Iraq and recently returned from Afghanistan. He is in the Army reserves and has been a member of the military for 25 years. Presently, Michael is a Chicago Police Officer in the Inglewood District. Patrick Kelly, Ken’s second son, a ’93 Central graduate, has served in the U.S. Army for six years. He is a member of the military police force with the rank of Corporal. He recently returned from Korea and reminds us that there are over 50,000 U.S. troops stationed in Korea. Patrick is a Joliet police officer. In addition, we want to express our appreciation to the many veterans who joined us from the Carillon Lakes Veterans organization including Dennis Vanderplow, Chairman, and Ralph Considine. Also, we are grateful for the participation of the Post Commanders of Cantigny VFW Post 367, Tony Arellano, Class of ’61, and Lockport VFW Post 5788, John Piccolo. Class of 1939 JTHS Dorothy Mavrich was honored by the Joliet Area Historical Museum as the recipient of its 2013 DreamMaker award. In October, she was feted along with the Rialto Square Theatre at the museum’s 12th annual Gala DreamMakers Ball. There is an especially close association between Dorothy and the theater. She led the effort to save the Rialto in the 70s when the former vaudeville theater was slated for demolition. In 1972, Dorothy and her many community supporters rescued the theater from being torn down for a parking lot. The Rialto’s grand re-opening was held on November 27, 1981 with international artist, Victor Borge, onstage. And, today, thanks to Dorothy’s efforts in leading the charge to save the theater, the Rialto will celebrate its 88th anniversary in May as a magnificent performing arts center bringing world-renowned artists to its stage. Class of 1949 JTHS Rev. Bruce Woodman, Executive Director of Impact International, is a veteran missionary with intercontinental experience in South America, Central America, North America, the Caribbean, and Europe. In 1959, his overseas ministry was launched in Argentina. Recordings and compositions include eight albums and three hymn books in Spanish and three albums in English. Bruce and his wife, Margie, have four children. You may email him at [email protected]. Class of 1951 JTHS Phyllis Reynolds Naylor began her writing career at an early age. As a child, she wrote little books on pieces of scrap paper stapled together. When she was a freshman at JT, she wrote a long poem on “Christmas Shopping.” Her first published story at the age of 16 was a baseball story titled, “Mike’s Hero.” Phyllis wrote it for a church paper and in the years since that time as a JT student, she has written over 135 books for children and adults and more than 2,000 short stories. In 1991, her book. “Shiloh,” about a young boy and an abused dog set in West Virginia, was published. The book won the Newberry Medal in 1992 plus several other outstanding literary awards. Phyllis went on to write two sequels to the book, “Shiloh Season” and “Saving Shiloh.” In 2000, the Shiloh Trilogy placed at number seven on the National Education Association’s Children’s Top 100 Book List. The Trilogy has been translated in ten languages. Phyllis has visited her alma mater several times over the years and has shared her love of writing and her experiences with students at JT Central, Washington Junior High, and Joliet Junior College. Most recently she was in Joliet in October when she visited the Joliet Public Library as part of her 2013 book tour. During her time at JT, Phyllis was a member of the A Capella Choir, the Madrigals, and the cast of the senior play. She also participated in the choir and youth fellowship at the Richards Street Methodist Church. Phyllis’ family moved to Joliet from Indiana when she was 12 and resided on Fourth Avenue. Phyllis’ father was a sales manager for the Gerlach-Barklow Company and her mother was a kindergarten teacher at Taft Elementary School. Her sister, Norma Reynolds Hinton (now deceased), was a member of the Class of ’48, and her brother, John, Class of ’56, resides in Eugene, Oregon. Her husband, Rex Naylor, was a speech pathologist, who passed away last year after 52 years of marriage. They have two sons, Jeff and Michael. Phyllis lives in Bethesda, Maryland. We are very proud that Phyllis is a Lifetime member of the JTHS Alumni Association and participated with her class in the JTHS Challenge 50 program. 8 Class of 1979 JT East Susan Johnson Markgraf is the founder and president of GreenMark Public Relations. The company which celebrated its sixth anniversary in August of 2013 specializes in conveying the message of green spaces, places and issues. The business has grown steadily and continues to grow. Her impressive list of clients includes the Chicago Garden and Flower Show, Lurie Garden in Millennium Park, Chicago Gateway Green, and the Nature Conservancy of Illinois, to name just a few. As a media professional, Susan has worked for the public relations and marketing firm of Fleishman-Hillard, the Lerner newspaper chain, the Dairy Council of Wisconsin, and also spent a five-year tenure with the Chicago Botanic Garden. She recently completed a term as President of the Publicity Club of Chicago. Class of 1979 JT West Daniel Malinowski has been the manager of the Joliet office of Willett, Hofmann & Associates for over three years. He is a professional engineer managing staff in civil and structural engineering, architectural and surveying departments on both public and private projects. Dan has extensive technical training and educational background. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois in general engineering and an MBA from the University of Chicago – Booth School of Business in Finance, Strategic Management, and Economics. When Dan gets away from the job, he is a sports enthusiast who enjoys camping, fishing, skiing, baseball, and scuba diving. He serves his community well as a member of the Joliet Rotary Club, Rotary International, the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce, the Will County Center for Economic Development, the JCA Board of Directors, and the All Pets Wellness Foundation Board of Directors. In addition, Dan is a member of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers and Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. Dan and his wife, Laura, have four children. They are proud of their daughter, Mary, on having recently passed her nursing boards at ISU and are wishing her well as she joins the nursing staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lincoln Park. Class of 2000 JT Central Eryn Blaser was awarded the 2013 Elementary Art Educator of the Year by the Illinois Art Education Association in October at the Hilton Hotel in Lisle. She has taught for seven years at the Meadow Ridge School in Orland Park and resides in Joliet. At Joliet Central, Eryn was a student of Lenore Branchaw-Harr. Eryn was the IAEA’s choice based on her outstanding commitment to visual art education as well as her extensive contributions in the Northeastern Illinois region. She plays a significant role in curriculum development in District 135 and recently wrote a technology proposal to equip her art program with iPads. Eryn has had a positive impact in the community showcasing student work in several locations throughout Orland Park as well as leading art workshops for children at community events. The following is Eryn’s reaction to being chosen for the award according to a press release from the IAEA: “I was so humbled by just being nominated for the award, let alone being chosen the Elementary Educator of the Year. I found myself looking back to when I first started teaching art and why I chose this path. I enjoy the process of creating and teaching others about history, tools, and steps it takes to create a work of art. I love seeing how others take that information to come up with an idea and/or their own personal masterpiece. So for teaching art has been an amazing journey! Watching children’s eyes light up when they are feeling confident and proud of something they make, or when a family comes to the art show at the library and is excited to see their child’s work on display, or the spills of black ink all over the art room floor. This is the excitement of exploration and finding oneself. I am just so thrilled to be part of helping children be creative and being a part of IAEA. There are so many wonderful people who I have learned so much from and who continue to help me grow.” The IAEA is an association of the art educators of Illinois. The organization has been serving the children and art educators of Illinois for over 75 years. 9 Reunion Calendar To all reunion coordinators for JTHS, JT Central, JT East and JT West: The Alumni Relations Office enjoys hearing from you as you plan your respective reunions. The year of 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of both the Central and the West campuses. In the fall of 1964, JTHS opened its doors for the first time as Joliet Central High School and Joliet West High School was the brand new campus on the west side of Joliet. All-school celebrations are being planned for each campus in 2014. **All Joliet West Alumni (1965-2014) - mark your calendars for the homecoming date of Saturday, September 6, 2014. **All Joliet Central Alumni (1965-2014) – mark your calendars for the homecoming date of Saturday, September 27, 2014. Note: Details of the events and activities to celebrate each homecoming and anniversary celebration will be forthcoming as plans evolve. The alumni relations office will send email blasts to all alumni for whom we have email addresses on the online alumni directory so make sure we have your correct email address. The alumni office will also make radio announcements, send out press releases, and post on Facebook. However, help us spread the word to all classes of JT Central and JT West. Use your social media to let classmates know of this “Fabulous 50 Celebration” of each campus! To reach the alumni office by phone, you may call (815) 727-6763 or by email: [email protected] or [email protected]. 10 Class Of ’47 Faithful To Its Reunions… Classmates of '47 were the guests of District 204 at a reception following the plaque ceremony. Pausing for a photo in the original entrance to JTHS were (l/r) John Randich, Joliet Central Principal; Emily Hoyland, student counsel member; Lynne Lichtenauer, Alumni Relations Director; Jean and Brent Wadsworth; Beverly Winkler Vargocko; Elmer Geissler; Carol Lindgren; Phyllis Holmquist; Carol and Marty Terlep, and Dr. Cheryl McCarthy, Superintendent. The Class of 1947 held its first reunion at the Richards Street Methodist Church in June of 1953 – 6 years after graduation. Ten years later they met again, this time at Club 472 on South Joliet Street. Classmate Brent Wadsworth, a member of the reunion committee, suggested the class stay with a five-year plan for their reunions. And, they were faithful to that plan. Reunions were held in ’62, ’67, ’72,’82, ’87, ’92, ’97, ‘’02, ’07, and in 2012, the class celebrated its 65th anniversary together at the Victorian Ballroom of the Jacob Henry Estate. It was noted that the ballroom was the former Youth Center where so many classmates spent time after the football games. On November 20, 2013, classmates gathered once again…this time for a reception recognizing those classmates who were the driving force behind so many of the reunions. Under the direction of classmate, Brent Wadsworth, a plaque honoring committee members was installed on a panel inside “A” door, the original entrance to JTHS. It is indeed heartwarming to know that graduates of the Class of ‘47 still feel such a strong bond with their alma mater. Classmates remembered on the plaque are George Eberhard, Elmer Geissler, Ed Hertko, Marty Hertko (deceased), Phyllis Johnson Holmquist, Bob Johnstone (deceased), Carol Treadman Lindgren, Ray Olin (deceased), Barbara Morris Polancich (deceased), Ed Ruettiger, Marty Terlep, and Beverly Winkler Vergocko. Following the plaque presentation, classmates enjoyed lunch together in the JT Central board room. Principal John Randich updated the guests on the $28M renovation and major makeover for JT Central that will include a new cafeteria, student center and galleria with an overhead walkway. Three friends from high school admire the plaque honoring the Class of '47 reunion committee (l/r) Phyllis Johnson Holmquist '47, Carol Krohn Terlep '50 and Carol Treadman Lindgren '47. In appreciation of the Class of '47 reunion planners, their classmate, Brent Wadsworth, commissioned the installation of the bronze plaque. Brent, always a proud Steelman, shows the plaque to his wife, Jean. 11 Kingsmen Celebration Of 30 Years! In the spring of 1983, the last graduating class of Joliet East High School walked the halls for the final time. Who would think that a school could disappear after being part of a community for 19 years? Time marches on without asking permission and we must eventually accept what changes it brings our way. Nostalgia is an interesting thing, because one only tends to remember the good parts. Life gives us brief moments with others…but sometimes in those brief moments, we get memories that last a lifetime. And, so it is with the Kingsmen! Partying Kingsmen and friends gathered on the track at Memorial Stadium. “Gone but not Forgotten” was the theme for the ultimate Kingsmen celebration on Saturday, July 27, 2013 hosted by the JTHS Alumni Association and the Alumni Relations Office. Over 900 Kingsmen, some traveling to Joliet from 17 different states, got their party on at the Joliet Memorial Stadium! This all-school reunion of epic proportions included not only those who graduated from East, but all former students who were in school when East closed its doors… from the ’83 freshmen to the juniors who went on to graduate from the other two campuses. Also, 18 former faculty members and coaches came to celebrate. The JTHS Cyborgs brought their frisbee-tossing robot to demonstrate its prowess and challenge alumni as to who could toss it the farthest. At the end of the evening, the Cyborgs gave out a green frisbee to each Kingsmen as a souvenir of the celebration. Committee members were comprised of East alumni Joe Kirkeeng ’83, Mike O’Connell ’69, Nancy Bartels ’77, and board members of the JTHS Alumni Association, President, Jean Olszewski East ’71, and Secretary, Linda Emmert, East ’76; Alumni Assistant, Betty Rostan, and Director of Alumni Relations, Lynne Lichtenauer. Also, Kingsmen representatives of each class from 1965 to 1983, helped us spread the word for the most extraordinary Kingsmen event ever! GO KINGSMEN! Photographer, John Pasch 12 Patti Sefcik Wills, '85 Central, and Andrea Sefcik Markley, '77, enjoy looking at their yearbooks. Joliet East teacher Bill Palmer wore his spirit hat. It was a photo op with fellow classmates and friends in front of the Kingsmen banner. JT East Class of 1976 graduates (l/r) Rowna Vargocko, Vicki Jordan, Cathy Scheidt, Lee Ann Camp Fisk, and Kim Conroy brought ballons to showcase their class! Class Gifts 2013 It is heartwarming to know that as graduates of Joliet Township High School, a bond is still felt with JT throughout all the years. The JTHS Alumni Association board members are grateful to the Class of 1941 and the Class of 1942 for the monetary gifts each presented to the association this past August. The classmates of these two classes always look forward to seeing each other on the third Monday of each month at Al’s Steak House. Chairman, Ernie Serena, Class of ’41, has the responsibility of making the calls to remind classmates of the luncheon. He represented his class in making the gift presentation. Margaret Trotter Cockbill, Class of 1942, represented her classmates in presenting the gift to the association. Each class now has a plaque on the Brenton Wadsworth Wall of Honor located at JT Central High School. The plaques are inscribed as follows: In Honor of the Class of 1941 In Honor of the Classmates of 1942. Send us your news and notes.... We look forward to hearing from you in 2013! Alumni Newsletter Editor - Lynne Lichtenauer 17 Layout & Design - Jordan Smuksta A MILESTONE OF 70 YEARS! The years fly by and pretty soon it is time to celebrate the 70th class reunion! Well, it just didn’t seem possible…but it was! On Saturday, August 24, 2013, 40 classmates met at Al’s Steakhouse to reminisce about their high school days and share their lives since that graduation day in June of ’43 when 521 seniors walked across the stage to receive diplomas. And, it must be noted that the dedication to the annual reunions began in earnest when classmates returned home from WWII. Senior class officers were the late Dr. Stan Rousenelos, President; the late Gordon Seitsinger, Vice President; Rose Mancuso, Secretary, and Marilyn Vose, Treasurer. For many years, the reunion committee was headed by Bob Barnes and when he decided to step down after the 59th reunion, Doris Riemer Weiske took over as chairman making sure that the annual reunions continued. Doris’ daughter, Pam Leffler, has assisted her for the last 10 years. Betty Carey Wirth, Herald News columnist, has been in charge of the correspondence duties and Pat Farrell Darin has done the name tags each year. In addition, throughout the years, several classmates were dedicated reunion committee members. For this very special and final reunion for the class, Howie Graf again traveled from his home in Indiana to emcee the event. Professional vocalist and classmate, Rosella Didesiderio Hase sang for the class. And, Bob Wirth and Ken Kobus lead the class in the “JT Loyalty” fight song. Classmate, Howie Graf, travels from his home each year to emcee the reunion. According to a column written by Betty following this final formal get-together, classmates remembered with pride that they lived in Joliet, the “City of Champions.” Pride, in the fact, that their high school had an award-winning band under the direction of A.R. McAllister, an outstanding JT orchestra conducted by H.A. Converse, an A Cappella choir directed by Alex Zimmerman along with the school plays, winning basketball, football, swim and track teams with coaches like Herm Walser, G.H. Farenholz, C.D. Stallman. So very much to be proud of! The classmates of ’43 remember with pride that they are Steelmen, past, present and forever! With that in mind, class representatives Betty Wirth and Doris Weiske contacted the alumni relations office to discuss the possibility of leaving a remembrance at JT Central in honor of the class as well as a gift to the JTHS Alumni Association. Through the generosity of the class, an embossed plaque inscribed with JTHS Class of 1943 is being placed in the high school on the JTHS Foundation’s Brenton Wadsworth Wall of Honor and a brick honoring the class will be placed in the walkway outside the Central field house. Also, a classinscribed name plate will be placed on the Share the Pride Nationwide plaque located inside “K” door at the Central campus. Words cannot fully express the gratitude of the JTHS Alumni Association board members for this generous class gift. In addition to placing the plaque, the name plate and the brick at the school, the balance of the contribution also enables the alumni association to assist today’s students and programs. Dedicated '43 reunion coordinators, Betty Carey Wirth (l) and Doris Riemer Weiske, are pictured with Doris' daughter, Pam Leffler, who assists her mother with the reunion planning. 18 CLASS OF 1953 The Steelmen of 1953 celebrated their 60th reunion on September 11, 2013 at the Victorian Ballroom of the Jacob Henry Estate.
