through continuing education, leadership development and volunteer community support. Our North

monthly on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the
North Liberty Library from 2:00 to 3:00. We have
guest speakers on 4H work, gardening, sewing, good
health and personal growth. We have 21 members
in the North Liberty Homemakers and are anxious to
greet more. You are invited to attend our meeting to
see if this is an organization that would be of interest
to you. We meet September thru June and the dues

You Can Cope with
Turbulence...As a
Passenger and an
Investor
March 24, 2014
Walkerton Area Shopper - Page 3
Koontz Lake Market
If you’re like many travelers,
you get a little nervous when
your airplane goes through
some turbulence. And if you’re
like a lot of investors, you may
get somewhat jumpy when the
financial markets are volatile. Yet flight turbulence probably isn’t as scary as it seems, and the same
may be true for market volatility — if you know how to respond.
Let’s look at some positive responses to market movements:
Don’t overreact to turbulence. Turbulence happens on most flights, but passengers are well aware
that they can’t “bail out” at 30,000 feet, so they generally don’t panic. As an investor, you also need to
avoid panicky behavior — by not taking a “time out” from investing. Over a period of decades, if you
were to miss just a handful of the market’s best-performing days, your returns could be dramatically
reduced. And the best days often follow some of the worst. So if you’re not invested in the market, you
could miss out on the beginning of a new rally, which is typically when the biggest gains occur.
Balance your “cargo.” The ground crew properly positions an airplane’s cargo to maintain the
plane’s center of gravity and reduce the effects of turbulence. When you invest, you also need to
achieve balance by owning a variety of vehicles, including stocks, bonds, government securities and
certificates of deposit. You’ll want your investment mix to reflect your risk tolerance, goals and time
horizon. While this type of diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss, it can reduce
the effects of “turbulence” — that is, market volatility — on your portfolio. Over time, your “cargo” (your
investments) may shift, becoming too heavy in stocks or bonds relative to your objectives. Consequently, you’ll need to periodically rebalance your portfolio to ensure it’s meeting your needs.
Match your “transportation method” with your goals. If you are flying from New York to Los Angeles,
you may experience delays or some changes in the flight plan — but your goal is still to reach Los
Angeles as quickly and efficiently as possible. Consequently, you wouldn’t scrap the idea of flying and
head to the West Coast on foot. When you invest, you will also encounter events, such as market
downturns, that you feel may be slowing you down in your progress toward your long-term objectives,
such as a comfortable retirement. But if your objectives haven’t changed, neither should your “transportation method” of reaching them. In other words, don’t abandon your long-term strategy in favor of
quick fixes, such as chasing after “hot” stocks that may not be suitable for your needs.
Maintain perspective on your “flight path.” When you’ve flown, you’ve probably observed (perhaps
with some envy) some of your fellow passengers sleeping through periods of turbulence. In the investment world, these types of people are the ideal long-term investors — they know that turbulence, in
the form of market fluctuations, is normal, because they’ve experienced it many times before. Their
perspective isn’t on short-term events, such as volatility, but rather on the voyage toward their “final
destination” — i.e., the achievement of their long-term goals.

So when you fly, fasten your seatbelt and relax. And when you invest, don’t overreact to short-term
events. By following these basic guidelines, you will be a calmer traveler and a better investor. This

Eight JGHS Students Win 29 Regional Scholastic Writing Awards
and 2 National Writing Awards
The prestigious Scholastic National Art and Writing Award winners were announced from New York
City on March 17th, and John Glenn High School had one National Gold Medal Writing winner and one
National Silver Medal for writing. Senior Jahna Almaguer won a National Gold Medal for her poem “The
Importance of Being with Ernest,” and senior Harrison Jessup won a National Silver Medal for his poem
“Edgar Allen Poe and Mr. Rogers Are the Best of Friends.” Only the top 1% receive National recognition
for their excellence in writing. Jahna was one of only 12 student writers in the state of Indiana to earn a
National Gold Medal. She also
earned a National Gold Medal
last year for her fiction. Both
students are eligible to receive
their awards at New York City’s
Carnegie Hall on June 6.
In the preliminary Regional
Scholastic Writing competition
for northern Indiana and Ohio,
eight JGHS creative writers
earned 17 Gold Key Awards,
9 Silver Key Awards, and 3
Honorable Mentions. John
Glenn’s 17 Regional Gold Keys
marked the 4th highest total of
Left to Right - Seated: Sarah Wolff, Tiffany Pierce
any high school in the state for
Middle : Taylor Felgenhauer, Jahna Almaguer, Elizabeth Wilks
Gold Keys, trailing only a Div.
Back: Jordan Maure, Harrison Jessup, Jennifer Almaguer
1 school and 2 private schools.
The 29 total writing awards are the most writing awards JGHS has ever received. Jahna Almaguer earned 2
Gold Keys, 2 Silver Keys and a Gold Key for her Writing Portfolio; Harrison Jessup, 2 Gold Keys; Jordan
Maure, 1 Gold Key and 2 Honorable Mentions; Tiffany Pierce, 2 Gold Keys and 1 Silver Key; Sarah Wolff,
2 Gold Keys, 1 Silver Key, and 1 Honorable Mention; Elizabeth Wilks, 4 Gold Keys and 3 Silver Keys;
Jennifer Almaguer, 1 Silver Key; and Taylor Felgenhauer, 3 Gold Keys and 1 Silver Key. The 17 Regional
Gold Key winners were then judged at the national level.
Because of her three Gold Key awards and being an underclassman, sophomore Taylor Felgenhauer
was awarded an Alliance Summer Arts Program (ASAP) award and scholarship to attend a two week
writing workshop at Kenyon College in Ohio. Kenyon is recognized as one of the top writing colleges in
the Midwest, and the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop Taylor will be attending is partnered with
the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards’ Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Taylor’s selection for attendance at the workshop is based on her merit as a writer.
Mr. Paul Hernandez, the creative writing teacher at John Glenn High School, is extremely proud of his
students’ accomplishments. All of the winning writings and many others are included in the 2014 Aerial,
JGHS’s award winning literary-art magazine, which went on sale in mid March. The magazine also
features many of the Scholastic artwork winners from Mr. Thomas’ and Mrs. Stoner’s art classes. The 160
page magazine featuring the writing and artwork of 95 different JGHS students can be purchased at the
school for only $5. The National Council of Teachers of English recently notified the school that the 2013
Aerial had earned recognition as “Superior Nominated for Highest Award.” Only two high schools in Indiana earned that high ranking: John Glenn and Park Tudor, a private school in Indy. This makes the Aerial
one of the top two literary magazines in the state.
The Scholastic Writing Awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. Each year, the National Arts Alliance partners with more than 100 regional affiliates across the
country to bring the program to local communities. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 30 categories
of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Gold
Key award writings continue on to the national level.
