Cargill Homecoming set to go for August long weekend
BY LINDSEY KUGLIN
WHT Reporter
Excitement is building for Cargill’s Homecoming,
set for Aug. 1-4.
With a slew of activities every day and no slowing
down throughout the night, Cargillians far and wide
should plan for a big weekend.
“If everyone has as much fun during
the Homecoming as we did in
planning this event, it is sure to be
a great success,” said Co-Chair
Michelle Wilhelm.
With less than two months to
go, both she and her co-chair
Steph Fortney stopped for a cup
of coffee with the WHT
Saturday morning for an update
on plans that they, and their army
of volunteers have hammered out
over the past two years.
“This event could not have come
together without many hardworking
hands,” Fortney said, “It has been such a
great pleasure working with this committee and
making some great friendships. Our sponsorship for
the weekend has been amazing.”
They said they have all their bases covered and
there are events geared for all ages.
“From very young, to seniors, there is something
for everyone. We planned it as a family event,”
Wilhelm said.
While registration starts Thursday evening, the
opening ceremonies are Friday at 7 p.m. Live music
will begin shortly after at the refreshment gardens,
dubbed the Farmers’ Tent - a cheeky nod to the area
farmers that sponsored it.
Friday morning will start with a golf tournament
with 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. shotgun starts.
The Hall of Golden Memories - or seniors
activities, including lawn bowling and euchre
tournaments, starts at 1 p.m. and runs until 4 p.m.
every day.
For the kids, there are activities every day, starting
with a Much Video Dance Party for ages five to 12
on Thursday at 6:30-8:30 p.m., and for teens 8:3011:30 p.m.
At the Children’s Pavilion on Friday, the kids will
enjoy a Dickie Bird show at 4 p.m. Bring them back
Saturday afternoon for inflatables, face painting,
balloons, a bubble show, and a Kiddie Trek train
ride. There will be more fun on Sunday with clowns
and a Reptile Party, and on Monday, there’s a magic
show. All children’s activities in the pavilion are
free.
Saturday will see a weekend highlight –, the
Homecoming Parade, making its way through the
village, starting at Cargill Auction, down the main
street, up King Street, looping around Queen Street,
back down the main street, ending at St. Joseph’s
Church.
The Canadian Harvard Flyover will begin the
parade, and following the parade there will be a
Dancing Tractors performance, and a stilt-walker
show.
The beard growing contest - which has been
ongoing since St. Patrick’s Day - will be judged at 3
p.m. on Saturday at the Farmer’s Tent.
Once the sun sets, there will be a family movie
screened at the campground on both Saturday and
Sunday nights.
Sunday starts with Mass at the church at 9 a.m., a
car show running all day, and the Rubber Duck Race
at the Cargill Falls.
After lunch, there will be a team
penning competition and
Redneck Games.
Monday has a more relaxed
schedule, but lots of fun
nonetheless, with a road
hockey tournament for ages
six-eight, nine-11, and 12-14.
The “Cargill’s Got Talent”
show starts at 1 p.m., and the
Farewell “See you in 2024”
Dance starts at 9 p.m.
Dances run every night from
Friday-Monday, starting at 9 p.m.
and going until 1 a.m., except
Friday’s dance starts at 8:30 p.m. All
dances are age of majority.
The bar will be open all weekend, from 11 a.m.-7
p.m., and 8:30 p.m.-1 a.m.
