AREA ENTREPRENEUR
BRINGS SCOTLAND TO
WALKERTON
In the age of the anonymous
“big box” store and monochrome
buying experience, people wonder what happened to the small
creative entrepreneur. Many
were swallowed up by bigger
more aggressive competitors, or
simply vanished; casualties of
the tenuous economy. But just
outside of Walkerton Indiana,
the entrepreneurial spirit is alive
and well in the person of Phyllis
Wille, and in the presence of her
“New Kitchen Store”.
New Kitchen Store is just
what the name implies--a
store filled with high quality
foodstuffs, spices, coffees and
teas, beautiful dishes, well made
kitchen tools and grilling items-all carefully chosen by Phyllis to
help her customers enhance and
enrich the hearts of their homes.
Since her business opened 7
years ago, Phyllis has adhered
to a vision of providing not only
excellent merchandise, but an
important service to her community as well; evidenced by
the over 30 local charities she
supports.
“We try to always encourage people to cook in a healthy,
sustainable way by teaching
cooking methods to people of all
ages, and acting as a source for
quality ingredients and cooking
utensils. We give back to the
community in a number of ways,
through our events that have a
fundraising aspect to them and
with cooking instruction for
children as well as adults.”
Each year, one of New
Kitchen Store’s main fundraising
events happens in early June,
and this year is no exception.
Benefitting Camp Millhouse as
the chosen charity , the “Scottish
Fling” will take place on Saturday, June 7 from 9am to 3 pm.
Location for the event is New
Kitchen Store itself, at 330 Liberty Street (State Rd. 23 beside
CVS) in Walkerton IN.
The event will feature a number of speakers and presenters,
including Phillip Abbott; owner
of Terra Spice, Chef Brad Hindsley; owner and executive Chef of
Spire Farm to Fork, Ron Elkins;
owner of GEFU kitchen tools,
and Carol Hamilton Meehan;
owner of Fiddler’s Hearth and
author of a new cookbook entitled “Recipes from the Hearth”.
There will also be be live
Celtic music, featuring strolling
bagpipers, and other Scottish
themed entertainment. Food of
many kinds will be available,
including pancakes made from
Indiana produced New Rinkle
products, Cock-a-leekie soup,
Scottish eggs prepared by Chef
Brad, Scottish shortbread, and
numerous samples and demonstrations of the products that are
available at New Kitchen Store.
Proceeds from the soup and
shortbread sales will be donated
to Camp Millhouse, which will
also have representatives attending. All attendees are encouraged
to show Scottish pride by wearing themed attire.
This event always generates a lot of excitement in the
local community. In the past the
themes have revolved around
country living; with bluegrass
music and campfire cooking,
May 12, 2014
nostalgia; with a vintage car
show, as well as East Indian
cooking. But event or no event,
a visit to New Kitchen Store
is always a unique experience
that hearkens back to the highly
personal interactions with shop
owners of the past. Customers
are always invited to sample
coffee and tea. Other store treats
or new items under consideration
may be offered, along with a
request for an honest opinion
of the product. Established
customers are sometimes asked
to trial new items in their
own kitchens to help Phyllis
determine whether they meet her
high standards for quality materials, workmanship, effective
design and utility. Patrons will
be informed of the upcoming
monthly cooking classes, taught
by Chef Brad. And if a shopper
has questions, information and
advice about any product in the
store is freely given by this very
knowledgeable owner. The summertime Farmers Market that is
available to local vendors free
of charge is another attraction;
and the annual Holiday preview
event that takes place Thanksgiving weekend make a visit to New
Kitchen Store an interesting and
enriching experience any time
of year.

Stevenson took the above photo. “Last Thursday and Friday some 500

Ann, and Marilee Ward played several selections on the piano. Friday
night between acts entertainment consisted of a cornet solo by Paul
Wolfram and piano numbers by Miss Jeanette Farrar.” - Walkerton

Start Saving Today
for Tomorrow’s
College Bills
May 12, 2014
Another school year is drawing to a close. If you have young
children, you might be planning
for their summer activities. But
you also might want to look even
farther into the future — to the day
when your kids say “goodbye”
to their local schools and “hello” to their college dormitories. When that day arrives, will you be financially
prepared to pay for the high costs of higher education?
Consider this: For the 2013–2014 academic year, the average cost (tuition, fees, room and board) was $18,391
for an in-state student at a four-year public college or university, and $40,917 for a private school, according to
the College Board. And these costs may well be considerably higher by the time your children enter college.
Of course, these are just the “sticker” prices; some families pay less, thanks to grants and tax benefits, such as
the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit. Still, you may encounter some hefty
college bills down the road.
But college is still a good investment in your child’s future. Over an adult’s working life, an individual with a
bachelor’s degree can expect to earn, on average, nearly $1 million more than someone with only a high school
diploma, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So you’re saving for a good cause.
Unfortunately, you may not be saving enough — or you might not be making the most of your savings. To save
for college, more parents use a general savings account than any other method, according to Sallie Mae’s How
America Saves for College 2014 study. These types of accounts carry two significant drawbacks: They typically
earn tiny returns and they offer no tax advantages.
However, you do you have some attractive college-funding vehicles available, one of which is a 529 plan. Your
529 plan earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses. (529
plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income tax and a 10% IRS
penalty.) Furthermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. But 529 plans vary,
so be sure to check with your tax advisor regarding deductibility.
A 529 plan offers other benefits, too. For one thing, the lifetime contribution limits for 529 plans are quite
generous; while these limits vary by state, some plans allow contributions well in excess of $200,000. And a 529
plan is flexible: If your child decides against college or vocational school, you can transfer the unused funds to
another family member, tax and penalty free.

While a 529 plan is a popular choice for college savings, it is not the only option available. You also might want
to consider a Coverdell Education Savings Account, which, like a 529 plan, can generate tax-free earnings if the
money is used for higher education expenses. You can typically only put in a maximum of $2,000 per year to a
Coverdell account, but it does offer more flexibility in investment choices than a 529 plan.
Your children may be young today, but, before you know it, they’ll be packing their bags for college. So, no
matter which college savings vehicles you choose, put them to work soon. This article was written by Edward
Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor Bob Borlik.

I would like you to come to my mom’s house and clean it for her.
She babysits in the morning till we get off of school which is about
3:30. Some days she has a lot of stuff to do because she has 7 kids total in her house. She is a foster parent to help kids in need and to help
kids who did not get a good life. I myself was a foster kid, my mom
was a drug addict and my dad left when I was born. I was in foster
care and nobody wanted to take me and they said that this was my last
resort. So the loving family they are they took me in and I was with
my sister because we were separated at fist. My mom runs all over the
place. She doesn’t even have time to get home on time for dinner. The
little time she has she fits in family time and that is her favorite time.
I would like for you guys to help her maybe get more time so she can
spend her alone time that she never gets. So will you think about it
THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING.
